Preface

This booklet talks about a visit to the center of the Special
Southern Economic Zone, which is Songkhla province. Besides
in Thai it is also translated into three foreign languages, which
are widely spoken in this area, English, Chinese, and Malay.
The story focusses on tourist attractions and interesting local
places, and the variety of products and local handicrafts of this
area.
In this story we get to know Sakis from Malaysia, Daniel from
England, and Jonathan Lee from Singapure as they visit their
Thai friend Khainui from Songkhla. Khainui takes them around
and introduces them to various popular and lesser known places
of the southern province of Songkhla. We get to go to these
places with them and you are invited to explore them further
for yourself. And we can learn about skills and culture of this
southern region and some of its history.
So, let us go with them as a starting point of our own exploration.

Players’ characters

The 1st is Khainui
Khainui is talkative. He likes travelling, making
jokes, and being friendly. He was born and raised
in Songkhla. Khainui is good at languages therefore,
as he was an exchange student in Malaysia. He has
got a lot of mixed race friends.

The 2nd Sakis
Sakis is a Malaysian friend of Khainui. He likes
travelling, eating, smiling and even more than these
shopping. This is his first time to visit Songkhla
province.
The 3rd Daniel
Daniel is Khainui’s friend. They met together while
Khainui was an exchange student in Malaysia. Daniel
is very observant and likes to learn about new
cultures, especially the cultural tours. For this
reason, Daniel chose Malaysia for the exchange
program. His favorite activity is taking photographs.
The 4th Jonathan Lee
Jonathan is Singaporean friend who loves nature,
peace and calm. Jonathan likes travelling to natural
places, Buddhist locations and showing respect to
Buddha images.

Episode 1 Warm welcoming

Khainui, a student, is good at learning language and likes travelling.
He is talkative, funny and friendly. He used to be an exchange student
in Malaysia. During vacation, he asked Sakis, Daniele and Jonathan
to come to his hometown, in Songkhla province.
Mother : Khainui, today you have to pick up your foreign
friends from the airport, right?
Khainui : Oh, ya. I must go there right now.
Khainui drives quickly to Hat Yai International Airport.

Announcemen t : Lady and gentlemen, the flight SK101 from
Kuala Lumpur has landed Hat Yai International Airport.
Khainui : Hey, Sakis, Daniele, Jonathan, this way
Sakis : I really miss you, Khainui.
Khainui : I missed you guys…let’s go to the hotel.

Songkhla Walking Street, the first “Songkhla Town”, is located
in the suburb of Songkhla Province and open for business from
16:00 to 22:00. There are many types of food stalls. We can visit
the birthplace of former prime minister, Prem Tinsulanonda’s first
home, which is an old wooden house and there are still appliances
of former times to see. The courtyard in front of the house will
have a music stage. At the ancient stone wall site, there are a lots
of handmade goods sold by local people. The visitors can see
local plays like Manora or shadow play, listening to music bands or
karaoke singing.

Sakis : Wow..there is food, drinks, and clothes. Let’s go shopping.
Jonathan : No, Sakis, let’s go get something to eat first.
Khainui : Okay. I will show you, where to get some delicious
food.
Daniel : Go, go, I’m starving.
Khainui : Today, I will take you to eat Kanom-chinand Thai
desserts.

All four boys eat and
listen to a music band in front

Daniel : Khainui ,What’s that? I’ve never seen it.
Khainui : Yes. It’s called Nhung-Ta-Lung.
It’s shadow play.
Jonathan : Is it called Nhung-Ta-Lung?
Khainui : Nhung-Ta-Lung is one artform
in southern Thailand that has been
popular from very long time ago.
After looking at many nice things
for a while, they walk back to the
hotel and will get ready for the
next day.

Episode 2 Welcome to Songkhla

Songkhla’s old town is located in Muang Songkhla district.
There are three main roads, called Nakhonnok , Nakhonnai and
Nang ngam Road. There is street art to see, which is painted on the
walls of beautiful buildings and examples of traditional architecture.
This is all done by the people of Songkhla. From a contemporary
architectural perspective, the streets outside the city’s streets, and
Nang Ngam Road still retain their original identity. There is a
Chinese wooden furniture shop, and there are also Chino-Portuguese
Chinese traditionals like Chinese Hokkien buildings on both sides
of the street.

Jonathan : Khainui, I’m hungry. Let’s
find something to eat.
Sakis : Yes. I think so. How about
you, Daniel?
Daniel : I feel also hungry.
Khainui : Take it easy. Let’s start by
having breakfast.

Khainui : It’s called Street Art. You can learn about people’s
life style through the paintings
on the wall.
Jonathan : All pictures are beautiful.
Khainui, Daniele, please take lots

Sakis : Khainui , what’s the red building.
I see a lot of people there.
Khainui : That is the red building. We call it here Hub, Ho, Hin.
It’s 100 years old. At that time it was a model.

Cat Island and Mouse Island and here it is. This is
the Mermaid statue that you wanted to see.
Jonathan : Wow..so beautiful. Daniele, could you take some photos
for me? I will show them to my sister.
Khainui : Okay, guys, here we are at Samila Beach. It is a tourist
attraction of Songkhla. The beach here is a very fine
sand called “Sai Kaew” and it also has a shady pine
forest. From Samila Beach, you can enjoy stunning
views. Like Mouse Island and Cat Island.
Sakis : Are they called Mouse Island and Cat Island?
Khainui : Yes, those are the islands. If you come to Songkhla
and haven’t come here yet, it means you didn’t come
to Songkhla.

Khainui : Okay, guys, let’s go to Tang Kuan Hill.
Jonathan : Khao Tang Kuan ?
Khainui : Khao Tang Kuan is one of the major tourist attractions
of Songkhla. It is a hill. About 2,000 feet above sea
level, Tang Kuan Hill is overlooking the city of Songkhla.
At the top of the hill is a pagoda that is enshrined.
Jonathan : Hurry up, I want to pay respect to the Buddha.
Khainui : How is it, beautiful ?
Sakis : Beautiful view of the city.
Jonathan : I want to worship him first.
All four boys watch from the hill the beauty of Songkhla
Lake and Songkhla. And learn about Thai culture
through looking at Phra That Phra That Lampang,
the old lighthouse and Sala Phra Wihan Daeng.

Episode 3 Charms of Songkhla

Koh Yo is known for the
weaving of a local textile of Koh Yo
district, Muang district, Songkhla
province. Famous for its fineness
and beautiful colors, Koh Yo
textile is a symbol of Southern
folk handicrafts and is the special

product of Koh Yo (OTOP). There is no record to show when the
people of Koh Yo started weaving. The islanders know how to weave
for hundreds of years, since the settlers have made their livelihood
on the island. And it is taught in the households.
Sakis : We want to have a fabric that is unique of this local
place for my sister and my mother. Because before I
come here, my sister told me to look for the fabric. I
know that Thailand has many beautiful fabrics made by
many villages.
Khainui : There’s definitely a need here for Koh Yo cloths.
Jonathan : Well, we want the same fabric.
Daniele : Let’s go then

Product Showroom and Distributor

Khainui : Well, you guys can see the beautiful cloth here.
Saris : This is the fabric of the tea house here.
Khainui : Yes, this is called Koh Yo. It is a symbol of southern
handicraft. The one you are holding is Ratchawat.
Woven since ancient times. And there are flowery
fabrics such as flowers, Pikul, Chun-Chom, Kom
flowers, and Mook flowers
Sakis : Very good, Oh, then the price.
Khainui : Aunty, how do you sell it?
Salesman : In general, the price of 200 baht per meter, if used
for a shirt, or a piece of skirt, one piece of cloth is
four meters.

After getting the cloth, the four of them went on a trip along
Koh Yo. Local dishes are served at lunch. They saw the Songkhla
Lake and feel very comfortable. The sea is really beautiful.
Daniel : Khainui, we see signs about the museum. Is there
one, Khainui?
Khainui : Yes, if you want to see it, I’ll take you.

The Institute for Southern Thai Studies

The Institute for Southern Thai Studies was set up in 1978
with a total area of 23 acres. The building is characterized by the
Southern architecture divided into four buildings, and each building
is divided into various exhibits on history and ethnicity. Artifacts
displayed are show the skill and wisdom of the local people. For
example, Kuddhong dagger, Kung Fu Knives, Kung Fu Knives,
and there is also a display room for special local traditions as the
shadow play Ta-Lung, Norahs and Li-gae (Traditional Thai dramatic
performances). There are also displays of the life style of people
in Southern Thailand, such as play and children’s play. There’s a
display for traditional medicine. In addition, at the Institute there
are rooms for tourists, seminar rooms, and shops of local souvenirs
such as Kra- Jood handicraft. Panan Crafts Handicraft, Yanlipao,

Koh Yao, shell products. Coconut shell products, silverware, etc.
The Institute also offers has a beautiful, scenic view of Songkhla Lake.

Officer : 30 baht for Thai adults, 10 baht for Thai children,
60 baht for foreign adults, 30 baht for foreign children

Klong Dan floating market

Klong Dan Floating Market, located in Klong Dan District, Ranot
District, Songkhla Province, is a natural tourist attraction. Perfect for
a relaxing local holiday or as a family activities. In the market is a
long line of old boats along the river. A wooden bridge is used as
a walkway to visit the market.
Daniel : Wow. Floating.
Khainui : There are 140 shops that sell products.
Jonathan : Everybody came in early to take pictures.
Sakis : This market is open every day.
Khainui : From 14.00 - 20.00 hrs, but not open on Saturdays.
It also has homestay service.
For those who are interested to experience the rural
atmosphere on the Buddhist canal path.
Sakis : This is an ancient boat.
Khainui : It is a dugout boat that is carved out from the whole
wooden trunk. The hull is 15.30 meters long and 2.06
meters wide and can carry 40-50 people. The interior
of the house was moved to the house in order to
move the house in front of the water and used in the
activities of the community. It is beautiful and functional.

On the way Khainui is showing his foreign friends
for the well-known bridge across the lake, it is called
Tinsulanonda bridge.
Tinsulanonda Bridge is part of Highway 4146 linking
Highway 407 Hat Yai – Songkhla and Highway 4083
Songkhla – Ranod. It is a bridge over Songkhla Lake
from the shore of the water crossing over to Koh Yo
and then back to the mainland. Passing Kao Kiaw on
Koh Yo this road is a more convenient way to go
across by car without having to wait for a ferry.
Sakis : The bridge is beautiful. This is also a conventional bridge.
Daniel : Stop and take a picture of this bridge. This evening

Khainui : Yes, we are driving this car on Tinsulanonda bridge,
The longest concrete bridge in Thailand. On one side
of the water is Amphoe Mueang Songkhla and on
the other Singhanakorn district. It was built during

Episode 4 Songkhla City of Diversity

In addition to the well-known tourist attractions such as Samila
Beach, Khao Tang Kuan, Yo Island, Klong Dan Floating Market and
Old Town Songkhla, foreign tourists also come to visit Hat Yai. the
commercial city of Hatyai. The city itself is a tourist attraction, an
entertainment center and commercial area for all travelers. Hat Yai
is the commercial center of South Thailand.
Jonathan : Today we are back. Where are we going now?
Khainui : I will take you to Hat Yai.
Sakis : Yeah, we want to go to see Hat Yai. We know that
Hat Yai is the commercial center of Songkhla
Province. We will buy some nice clothes for our
family.
Khainui : When is your flight? We should plan ahead.

train. We heard that Padang Besar has a train to
Kuala Lumpur.
Khainui : Well, after a long trip to Hat Yai. Are we traveling
to Padang Besar?

Hat Yai Municipal Park

Khainui : Everyone here is in Hat Yai Municipal Park.
Jonathan : I feel so refreshed.
Khainui : You like it, don’t you? Here are many of the people
of Hat Yai. Much of the park is left very naturally.
Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the trees.
Daniel : This is a big area.
Khainui : Yes, there are more than 900 Rai or 392 Acres
here, and there is not just the park to see. There
are also other tourist attractions. Let’s find them.
Khao Kho Hong

Sakus : Wow, we can see all of Hat Yai.
Khainui : Can you remember that?

Kim Yong Market

Kim Yong Market is a large market with many goods. Imported
from Malaysia, Indonesian goods in the Kim Yong market are cheaper.
The most popular products of this market are: mangoes, cashew
nuts, almonds, baked beans, pecans, chestnuts, fresh fruits, good
quality bags, clothes, electrical appliances, watches. In addition to
this, shoppers can buy products at a cheap price. You can also take
these products as a souvenir for your people.
Sakis : This is the Kim Yong market.
Khainui : Yes, that’s right. Are you ready to shop?
Daniel : We are ready. But the one, who is ready first is Sakis.
Khainui : Hey Sakis, where are you going?
Sakis : Hurry up and follow me.

Khao Rup Chang Temple
Khao Rup Chang Temple is located at
Tambon Padang Besar, Sadao, Songkhla
Procince. Khao Rup Chang Temple is a
Mahayana temple. There are caves with
stalactites and stalagmites. There is also
a statue of Goddess Kuan Yin, to whom
Buddhist pay homage. The temple is
located in a cave in a mountain that looks
like a big elephant, strong and stable.
In the mountains, there is a flowing
stream of candles, a dragon priest, Meng San discovered
this place in 1970. He tried to change this place to become a
missionary outpost after dedicating more than ten years to it.
You can turn this place into a holy place, suitable for missionary
propagation.

Jonathan : We’ve been here a long time ago. At that time,
we came here with my family to pray. It is very
peaceful.
Khainui : Yes, this place is very peaceful. Let’s go inside the
temple.
Jonathan : We would like to pay homage to God.

are stalagmites. The weather is very cool.

temple and everyone headed to Padang
Besar. But before the foreign friends of
Khainui will travel, Khainui takes all his
friend to visit Padang Bazaar market that
sells a variety of products. The goods at
this market are cheap. They bought a few
desserts for back home

Daniel : Khainui, we want to exchange money. Please help us.
Jonathan : Me, too.
Khainui : Sakis?
Sakis : We bought all the stuff and did not exchange
: money enough.
Daniel : You really like shopping.
Khainui : Well, I will ask the villagers where the money
exchange place is, sorry. Where is the place for

Padang Besar Railway Station (Thai side)

Padang Besar Railway Station (Thai side). There is a bus service
to Padang Besar Railway Station. There are two daily departures
from Malaysia (2 days) and 09:00 (14:00). Passengers can take a train
from Padang Besar (Thai side) to Malaysia and buy tickets at the
railway station. Bebar (Malaysian side) Padang Besar Railway Station
(Thai side) is located at Padang Besar Railway Station. (Malaysia) is
only 800 meters further. ?

Khainui : I need three tickets to travel to Kuala Lumpur.

Jonathan : We went to a place where we never went before. We
experienced nature. We have learned the way of life
of this people. If there is a chance we will come here
again.
Khainui : I am so happy to go everywhere with you guys.
Songkhla has many places to visit. Next time, you
should travel by train again, the journey will be safe

“宋卡以前步行街” 位于宋卡直辖县， 宋卡府。安排在每星期五和星
期六晚上有步行街。置于宋卡的老城墙。从16：00-22：00. 有很多从宋卡
有名餐厅来这里开店，还可以观赏 General Prem Tinsulanon的家。很古老
的干阑式建筑木材房子，还可以观赏他的家具。在他房子的面前有音乐演奏
的舞台。在 “ 宋卡古老城墙” 的旁边有很多手工用品，服装的商店和泰国
南方的演出比如 古典的泰式调，皮影戏。

湖中岛名幺岛的纺织品，是名幺区，宋卡
直辖县，宋卡府 当地的纺织品。也是五颜
六色精心制作的宋卡府有名当地纺织品。
湖中岛名幺岛的纺织品是泰国南方工艺品
的标志和最佳的产品。一乡村，一个产品
(每个乡村会有自己最佳的产品)（OTOP）
。没有一定的证据可以证明湖中岛名幺岛
的纺织品从什么时候开始编纺，可是一百年多以来这里的人就知道编织的
方法了。曾经有人迁到名幺岛生活后，纺织便世代宣传

沙迪斯 ：我想要本地传统的布，买给我的姐姐和妈妈。因为来泰
国之前我姐姐告诉我“泰国有很漂亮当地人亲自的织布”。

南方博物馆是文化方面很有名的一所博物馆。从2521年建立，有23泰
亩的空间，每一栋楼都是泰国南方式的建筑。分成4部分，每个房间展览一
些历史和民族传统。这些古物不仅是 装饰，南方人用的武器 比如 匕首，鸡
尾刀，鲍伊猎刀 都是来自以前民族所用的知识自作的。当地的娱乐房 比如
皮影戏，古典的泰式调，野生音乐民间戏剧。南方人的生活方式房 有一些
当地人的玩具。以前组建僧的传统房。古老医疗方法房。出此之外，还有
客房，研讨会房，本地人产品的商店 比如 石龙刍工艺品，磐安工艺品，
海金沙属工艺品，名幺岛纺织，贝壳品，椰子壳品，银器。从南方博物馆
还能看到很美丽的宋卡湖。

KLONGDAN水市

KLONGDAN水市是自然旅游景区，位于KLONGDAN 村，拉诺县，
宋卡府。河水，房子，产品都是KLONGDAN乡村的标志。周末的时候很
适合旅游，还可以让我们感到很放松的跟家人在一起的地方。河水两边有
很漂亮古老的房子，又有很坚固的木材天桥。
丹尼尔 ：哦! 水市。
丹渺 ：里边一共有140 商店。我们走看看吧。
朱娜塔琳 ：大家！来，我们先拍个照吧。
沙迪斯 ：这里每天都开吗?
丹渺 ：不是，星期六才开，从14:00-20:00点晚上 除此之外还
有寄宿家，为了对 乡村，河水，佛教感兴趣的人。
沙迪斯 ：这是古代的船吗？
丹渺 ：大概就是那样子，这个是挖泥船。这个船从香坡垒树挖
出来。船长有 15.30米，宽2.06米。这个船可以乘40-50
个人。以前用来携沙到寺庙。到雨季的时候用这个船从
底部挖房子，然后搬房子，还有很多用途。现在已经修
复这个船又漂亮又能用。
丹尼尔 ：那美食呢？ 我饿了。
丹渺 ：这个！跟着我来。
沙迪斯 ：炸鱼！

丹渺 ：那个是古典的泰式调的节目。这个节目为了传播当地古典的
泰式调的文化艺术到青少年人。对古典的泰式调的人就到每个星期五，星期
六，星期天在寺庙的文化厅排练。轮流的去天桥上和河边的舞台表演。

大家都吃饱之后就回到酒店休息和准备明天之旅。回去的路上丹渺的
朋友看到两端连接着横跨宋卡湖的桥都很惊喜。这桥叫TINSULANON桥。

TINSULANON桥是4146的公路一部分。两端连接着横跨着407合艾-
宋卡的公路和4083 宋卡-拉诺的公路。这个桥跨宋卡湖，从NUMKRAJAI村
到绿山，路过名幺岛。即交通方便，又不要等汽车渡轮跨宋卡湖。
沙迪斯 ：这条天桥好漂亮呀！我以前来的时候还是普通的桥。
丹尼尔 ：停车一下，我想拍这条桥的照，现在日落的风景好漂亮。你

丹渺 ：对啊，我们玩赏地乘车。这是泰国最长的混凝土TINSU-

除了我们很熟悉宋卡府的旅游景点 莎密拉半岛，考登功山，湖中岛名
幺岛，KLONGDAN水市，宋卡的老城区之外，还有一个地方是宋卡人和外
国人的旅游景点是合艾市。购物及娱乐的市镇，也是泰国南方的购物中心。
朱娜塔琳：今天我们要回家了，回去之前丹渺要带我们去哪里呀？
丹渺：我带你们去合艾市。
沙迪斯 ：我很想去合艾 啊，我知道合艾购物中心。我想买美食，衣
服给家人。
丹渺 ：你们是什么时候的飞机呀？我才能做好计划。
丹尼尔 ：我们忘记告诉你了丹渺。我们乘火车回家，我听说过有巴
东勿刹到吉隆坡的火车。
丹渺 ：好啊，我们在合艾旅行好了之后，也去巴东勿刹好不好？

KIMYONG 市场是一所很大的进口产品市场。其中有马来西亚进口，
印度尼西亚进口。KIMYONG 市场的产品又便宜又好。最流行的是 烤腰
果，烤杏仁，开心果，栗子，新鲜的水果，服装，电器，钟，购物者可以
开心的在这了买到便宜的价格，还可以找到很满意的纪念品。
沙迪斯 ：丹渺，这里是KIMYONG 市场是吗？
丹渺 ：对啦沙迪斯！你们准备好购物了吗？
丹尼尔 ：我们准备好了，你们看沙迪斯很兴奋的样子，已经走远了。

大象泉之穴寺庙 巴东勿刹乡村，沙道县

大象泉之穴寺庙位于巴东勿刹乡村，
沙道县，宋卡府。大象泉之穴寺庙的教派
是大乘宗派。在洞穴里边有石笋和钟乳石
和观世音的雕像给佛教祭拜。赤宫亭在很
像的又粗壮又憨厚大象山里面。山里面有
像龙的水沟。在1970年 被名山和尚发现
后，他坚持用40年的时间将这座山变为一
处结晶的地方和为了传播宗教。

刹之前，丹渺带他的朋友去巴东勿刹市场，这里有东西即多又便宜。回家
之前他们买了三四件的甜品带回家。
