1 MARINERS’ NITE DHAMAKA 2016

From the Editors....

Avijit Dutta If it doesn’t feel like it’s been a year since we published the last edition of
our Souvenir Magazine, you’re not wrong. With the event being held in
the usual month of August unlike October last year, we bring to you our
Magazine and our Annual Mariners’ Night Dhamaka a little bit earlier.

This edition of the magazine shares some of the event highlights
of 2015-2016 featuring the ‘Mariners’ Golf Classic 2016’, ‘Mariner’
TurboSolutions Cup 2016’ futsal tournament, ‘Mariners’ Rang Barse’
holi event and we also relive last years ‘Mariners’ Night Dhamaka
2015’.
This year the club and its members got together to give something back
to the community. We hope to make this an Annual event, and as with all
our events, make this grow in scale with every passing year. Do read the article ‘Mariners
Lend a Helping Hand’.
Mariners can’t get enough of travelling and an extended time at home
leads to twitchy feet for some, drawing them to mighty challenges. Sanjib
Ghosal’s wanderlust took him on a trek all the way to the Mt. Everest’s
Base Camp. His article describing his journey to this magical place is
a must read this year. Just make sure you are able to keep a handle
on your own twitchy feet or else you might find yourself trekking up
the majestic Himalayas soon.

For all the restless sportsmen back home, we have Sumit Seth’s

tips to remain injury free while out in the field with his article Cric – IT

(Injuries and Tips). Fitness seems to be a recurring theme with the

articles this year as Masood Baig tells us his secrets behind having ABS-

AT-50 and his Slim For Life Plan. Sumit Seth

Brijesh Mongia provides us Mariners some career guidance, stemming from

his sailing experience and the years of recruitment knowledge, while Sanjiv

Mishra explains the concept of Ballast Water Management in layman’s terms to those of us

Ankit M not in the know.
unjal
A very special contribution this year is from the late Ashok Kumar, who

was a part of our own Mariner’s extended family and penned a beautiful

poem ‘Cricket Ke Rang’ specially for our Magazine before sadly

passing away earlier this year. Our thoughts and prayers go out to

the family.

Do not miss the Chak De Mariners and the Honors Board pages

which showcase all the sporting achievements and trophies that

were added to our bulging trophy cabinet.

This year’s editor’s note would be incomplete without a mention of

the upcoming Mariners’ Premier League Annual Sixes tournament.

Pitting friend against friend over the 8th & 9th October 2016 Weekend,

this year’s edition will feature an appearance from Ravi Shastri who will

possibly put on the pads to whack a few sixes himself.

Lastly I would like to thank all our sponsors for the magazine and all our events throughout

the year. Without your help and contribution our club wouldn’t be where it

is now.

That’s it from the editor’s desk, we hope you thoroughly enjoy this
edition of our Magazine.

Best Wishes,
The Editorial Team

Orient Agency THEORY

We’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately.
About the way we do things.

And we’ve come up with a little theory.

We call it ORIENT Agency Theory.

See, we’re used to doing things a little differently.
Like keeping our clients interest at heart at all times,
like one big happy family. Or having our phones answered

by a real person from the moment we pick up
your call. No automated operators. We promise.

So what else is this theory all about?
Well, it’s also about keeping things simple.
Like sending you a simple text message once the job is done,
any time of the day, without waiting to be asked.

It’s not like we’re trying to be different.
It’s just that it makes sense, that’s all.

Refreshing isn’t it?
We think so.

After all, we are ASEAN’s most personalized shipping Agency.

Dear Colleagues, Friends & Family,

The year 2015 has been truly gratifying to me. It made me feel that we
had ultimately lived up to the founding manifesto of MCC – an underlying
objective to rehabilitate and integrate the lonesome sailors seamlessly into
the social fabric as Some of us had been in a state of disconnect roaming the
high seas. While founding the MCC our intent was to pull our brethren out
of their cocoons and make them relevant to the surroundings. It has taken
nearly a decade but the reality check validates this achievement. Our MCC
President Subir Ghatak was invited by the President of SCA (Singapore
Cricket Association) and few other members to contest the election for
position in SCA committee, although he narrowly lost the election, it was
testimony of the fact that MCC has made an impact in the Singapore Cricket
fraternity and is well on its way to playing a bigger role in the local cricket
and national cricket.

I am very pleased to see the wonderful progress and that
MCC has come of age. It has come to be recognized as
one of the more esteemed and certainly the
most represented club in Singapore Cricket
League. Our Soccer group has done even
better, as our annual soccer event, the
Turbosolution Cup saw huge turnout with
the first time participation from teams
as diverse as Marine Insurance and
law firms. This is indeed a welcome
sign and a firm step in making
MCC more relevant to this unique
melting pot called Singapore.

Whilst we continue to build and make
MCC even more vibrant and colourful,
I would like to remind ourselves that our
members are an existential necessity for us.

I would be failing in my commitment to our
cause if I do not flag Rakesh Dhir’s words “MCC and
their families played a different sort of innings” during the
lunch hosted by MCC for the
residents of Sunlove Home,
an abode for intellectually
infirmed. Kudos to Kamaljeet a few words from the Chairman...
Singh for conceiving and
organizing the event in which
more than 500 residents
and 50 odd MCC members
participated with their families. Such innings have only winners and while
we have limited funds, MCC could well keep this as an annual event with
larger participation of members.

Our annual events, Mariners’ Night Dhamaka and Mariners’ Lloyds’ Register
Eights are just around the corner and I look forward to seeing each and
every one of you with your loved ones in all in our events.

All the best,
Anuj Sahai

It’s that time again when I get to share our joy and achievements of the year gone past and thank
you all for your enthusiasm and love which makes it all happen.
So, to the victories first!
We had a fantastic 2015. We are the cricketing champions of Divisions 3 and Division 6
in the SCA Leagues and for the 2nd time as well, the winners of the Yorkers Premier
League. As we have grown in football and futsal, our winning ways have extended to
those pitches too. We were the ‘Shield’ champions in the futsal tournament organized
by us (no ‘home team’ advantage, mind you…☺…). In football, our team in Division
1 of ESPZEN League is doing very well; and a podium finish is nearing, as the
players get their ‘football-legs’.
All these winning ways are the result of excellent sportsmanship shown by our
members; also a result of numerous sprains, cuts-n-bruises, black-eyes and
backaches willingly contributed by the players. (Their bosses back in the
offices are planning to start a new medical leave category – “MCC”, as in
‘Mariner’s Club Casualty’!) Never a grimace; always a smile! I would be
amiss if I forget to acknowledge the tacit support and encouragement
given by these players’ spouse and kids. As it is said, many shoulders
make the load lighter – we have thus surged forth as a willing, milling
n chillin’ group!
We take corporate social responsibility as a duty; perhaps even
as our right! Sharing happiness with the community, the country
and with our partners in this lovely Little Red Dot is important
for us. MCC joined some other groups of Good Samaritans
on 2nd July to visit the Sunlove Home. This abode cares
for hundreds of intellectually infirmed, providing them
succour, warmth, meals and medication. About 50
MCC members and their families joined to dance
and sing with the residents; then to serve meals
and gifts to them. An innocent mind is a beautiful
mind; most of us left that place with a deep sense
of gratitude for the love and smiles that we were
showered with.
So now to the celebration of our much awaited annual
even - Mariner’s Nite Dhamaka!
I am sure by the time you sober down (☺…!), catch-up on
your sleep, burn off the calories and are generally in the mood
to have picked up this magazine, you would fondly remember
President’sMessage a night par-excellence! The show gets better each year; but one
thing never changes – the fantastic enthusiasm with which Mariners
have fun and the seriousness with which they ensure others have fun
too. I will spare you the sailors’ jokes, but surely one and all have many
fond memories when Mariners (suitably padded-up with fortifications,
occasionally of the liquid kind) take the center floor and then floor all
Landlubbers!
Here is to salute the Spirit of the Seas! Safety over Harm, Courage over Danger
and Hope over Adversity.
We are sure that Poseidon, Lord Varun and King Neptune stand guard over our
brethren at sea. Meanwhile, we will be back to having a bit more fun! I wish you all
a happy, healthy and a back-slapping funny, ROFL-kinda experience ahead!
For the year ahead- All hands to stations! Full ahead!! Let the fun begin!!!
Thank you.

Yours truly,
Subir Ghatak
President, Mariners’ Cricket Club, Singapore.

success.

The occasion was graced by almost 120
golfers who had a fantastic time at golf

We would like to take this opportunity

What are Sports Injuries?

“Sports Injuries” can happen while playing sports or
exercising; some are caused by accidents while others
can result from poor training practices or improper gear.
People also get injured if they are not in good physical
condition. Not warming up or stretching enough may also
lead to injuries.

The most common sports injuries are:
• Ankle sprain
• Groin pull
• Hamstring strain
• Shin splints
• Lower back pains
• Knee injury/ACL tear
• Shoulder injury - Thrower’s Shoulder
• Dislocations & Fractures

trophy

Brijesh Mongia (L) receiving the trophy from the sponsor Capt. Masood Baig.

The  Mujeeb Ahmed Trophy for the “THE BEST CRICKETER OF THE YEAR” has been instituted by the
Club as a Rolling award to be given every year to the best all-round Cricketer among the mariners.
Introduced in 2012, the award has been sponsored by one of our members in the memory of his late brother
Mr. Mujeeb Ahmed, who was himself an avid cricketer and an all-rounder. What makes this award special is
that like the Mariners, he too started a small cricket club with passion and was the driving force behind the club
and its activities.
The recipients of this award are not only for their sheer performance as depicted in their batting and bowling
averages but also for the spirit, dedication and contribution to the game. They are in the true sense “Match
Winners” for Mariners.
The Winners list:
2012 – Ritesh Sood
2013 – Sameer Rawat
2014 – Ranjit Bandekar
And in 2015 it was Brijesh Mongia.
