Every Mile a

Memory

by Sanjib Ghosal

The sharpest canine of
Nature, the sublime beauty
at its best, the pristine wonder
of Mother Nature called me,
embraced me and I was awestruck
to view the mighty, gigantic, emperor
of size-The Himalayas.
I took this endeavor to trek to the
Everest Base Camp (EBC) in June 2016.The feat was
achievable as I viewed from the sea level, but as I started
planning out, it gave me an insight into the twists, turns and rocky
climb that I was soon to discover. Amidst various sweet and sour
reactions from family and friends who were skeptical of the venture, I
started planning 12 months in advance.
Internet, google in particular is a boon. I met Saligram Aryal, owner
of Mountain World Treks, who very patiently and intently paid absolute
attention to my excitement, joy, wonder, fear and anxiety. I was taken
through all the intricate details in the planning stage to make my dream sound
real and that I would acquire the zeal to undertake this expedition to EBC.
You cook up a storm over a cup of coffee. As Saligram gave me a rough sketch of the forthcoming trek, I was
excited to share my thoughts and wished to extend this opportunity of living and realizing this dream to my friends.
And VOILA! - Rahul Sawant, an active member of Mariners’ Futsal team came to sign up for the trek.
Once decided, we wanted to move ahead and our 1st step was booking tickets from Singapore to Kathmandu in
February 2016. Then followed all the necessary documentation like insurance, visit visas, just to mention a few.
Plan, wait and go……… It was the 3rd of June 2016. Finally myself and Rahul, who flew in from Manila, joined
hands and promised to make the best of this venture and a lifetime experience – The Everest Base Camp.
Touching down at Kathmandu itself was mesmerizing. The welcoming nature of the Nepalese and the warm hug of
Salibhai(as Saligram is fondly called) charged us to have a brief tour of the city of Kathmandu.
5th June we flew to Lukla by a Twin Otter with a seating capacity of only 12 and an open cockpit. The view of the
hills was breathtaking and I knew our journey had begun. We walked the hills for 5 hours and reached Benkar
and now, the day was for rest and familiarization. The air, pure…..the view, mesmerizing…..the sound, enchanting
…..the place, pristine. Nature, I wonder, how engulfs such beauty within.

Perceptions

by P.D. Janarthanan

Being Human! Should be the mantra for peace and harmony. Today we see so many disturbing events happening
around the globe in the name of religion, race and territory. The seed that plants it all is PERCEPTION and you
do reap what you sow.

Perception of an individual or group of individuals about another determines their action. The stronger the
perception the more vigorous the action. Many a times these perceptions are inherited. Constructive education
can help neutralize perceptions but the society and value system play a huge role.

I decided to write on this matter after a casual dinner conversation with friends over sports unexpectedly
steered in the direction of nationality and religion, with some feeling strongly against some nationalities and
religions. I find it difficult to digest that people can have a generic perception based upon the wrong-doings of
some or based on the past.
One rotten egg does not mean the entire batch is bad.

The more I thought about it, I realized people have a flowchart when screening others. It is the flow that
determines how you decide on your relationships

The selection criteria listed are the same for both but in different order or priority. For some the nature of the
person is more important for others their origin.

Meet someone new

Wish to know them Flow A will focus on attributes which
better are unique to that individual and

me wonder, imagine a superficial

Befriend you believe is from a origin
Nature of your choice when you got

inseparable and you come to
know that they actually belong
to an origin that you would not
approve of.

Will that change the way you think or feel about the person? Well! if you felt differently your emotions were
fake. Most of the people would live with the decision i.e. have adopted flow A unintentionally. and if it worked
out great, why not adopt it in the first place for everyone rather than create a mass filter?
Everyone likes to be treated fairly, equally, respectfully and most important humanly. The sooner we learn and
live with it, the better it will be for a world that seems to be on a self-destruction mode. Change your perception
for your own good, because reality does not bite our perception of reality bites.
The world would be perfect the day people love without restriction, trust without fear and accept everyone for
who they are.

career planning Formal education – are qualifications beneficial?
(it will have to be yes anyway given it’s for the
for the shipping industry ICS but are other commercial roles requiring
qualifications – think operations, broking and
chartering)?

by Brijesh Mongia A basic education in all disciplines in life are two
somewhat essential. Is that true for the marine
Director, Halcyon Recruitment industry as well? The answer is yes! This basic
education can be in the form of practical on the job training program or
certifications to understand Charter parties for example, which is very
well covered by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. There is no doubt
that on the technical front you do require your Certificate of Competence
( CoC) which makes you a specialist marine technical professional. On
the other hand, a shipping degree is not mandatory for a commercial
chartering or a broking role. Interesting right!
We have come across excellent brokers who never went to a college
and joined the industry as a rookie learning through the ropes of op-
erations, contract management and eventually broking and chartering
of these high valued vessel assets. You can be the most theoretically
knowledge-able person, but if you are not social or out there meeting
customers, networking etc. you may not be the best Charterer/Broker in
this market!
At the start of a career in this competitive environment, it is always
comparatively easier to land your first job if you already have a good
education background compared to someone who does not. This is
where it becomes more important to introduce specific subject courses
to help the people with not-so-good educational background.
We always advise professionals to pursue an MBA/Executive MBA after
they have gained enough experience to make the most of it in their
management role.
It often comes across as the candidates are the ones being more mindful
of obtaining the qualification as a boost for their profile / background. To
the employers, most are looking at the right fit (in terms of experience,
background, network and most importantly the right attitude and
personality). Qualification is good to have for some roles, and a basic
requirement for others. This is no longer the only ‘selling’ point!!

Personal development – should individuals give more thought
to their personal development given shipping is relatively flat
structured?  If so, what should they do themselves and what should
they look, for in an employer?

Personal development is an integral part of everyone’s career. It is also
to a lot of extent a key motivation factor to continue performing and stay
hungry for success! Typically, Shipping is known to be flat structured
and one becomes a specialist in a particular department/segment within
the company. Shipping is a passion! You need to really like it and find

some “romance” in it to stay in this industry for many years. Very often
it’s the case that people join maritime sector by coincidence or as
an intern and then never leave. So they can move from operators
to charterers, ship-owners, freight traders, head of commercial in
shipping companies then GM level, but they stay in the industry.
You should always see if you still like what you’re doing first,
and then usually the next move when you feel a little bit bored
with your current responsibilities to see where you would like
to move to learn something new and add to it.

MBA in Shipping at a later stage can be a good tool to widen
your vision on where to apply your unrealised potential and
professional experience. Also to build your network globally,

happening in the industry. Especially on the dry and offshore markets where most ship owners are bleeding
money, it makes absolute sense to do that in the coming years.
Where can people access information to help themselves in career planning?
The best way is by talking to the network and people within the industry, although every professional has an
individual career development path. For fresh graduates and someone starting their career in shipping, it is
very important for them to ask their seniors/alumni for career guidance. At Halcyon Recruitment, all of our
consultants have relevant shipping background before starting consultancy, so if any doubt or guidance, you
should speak with one of us sooner than later!
What constitutes a forward thinking employer?
To attract the best talent having personal motivation that drives them towards development, someone who is
