The Department of Mineral Resources set up the Fossil Geology
and Natural History Museum in Lampang Province as it sits in
the heart of northern Thailand and boasts a great diversity of natural
resources. With the emphasis on scientific accuracy, modernity and
fascination, this museum is considered to be the top geological
museum of the North and a comprehensive geological and natural
resource attraction.

Inside this facility is exhibitions on pre-historic fossils of
mammals found at the Mae Moh mine, whereby people living in
the northern region can drop in to get more knowledge.

A corner of this museum is devoted to
fossils that have won royally-granted names. Her
Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn,
who is keenly interested in researches on Thai
fossils, has graciously granted the permission to
use her name for two ancient species. One is
Phuwiangosourus sirindhornae, an herbivorous
dinosaur of which fossils were found in Phu Wiang,
and Tarsius sirindhornae, a mammal species of
which fossils were found at the Mae Moh mine,
Lampang Province. This mammal species went
extinct from Thailand around 13 million years ago.

The Department of Mineral Resources has a mission to disseminate knowledge
among the public via temporary exhibitions on various occasions. The members of
the Royal Family have graciously visited and supported such exhibitions.

On 1st December 2007, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn inaugurated
an exhibition on “Dinosaurs in Thailand” at Phufa shop, 4th floor, Siam Paragon shopping
complex. Mr. Aphichai Chawacharoenphan, who was Director-General of the Department
of Mineral Resources at that time, welcomed the Princess to the opening ceremony.

Prior to the introduction of the latest bureaucratic reform on 3rd October 2002, the department
had explored mineral resources for national development and controlled mineral resources under the
Minerals Act B.E. 2510. It had also overseen groundwater under the Groundwater Act B.E. 2520, the
Groundwater Act B.E. 2535 and the Groundwater Act B.E. 2546. As parts of the 2002 bureaucratic
reform, the Department of Mineral Resources was divided into four departments: the Department of
Primary Industries and Mines, which focuses on the application of minerals; the Department of Mineral
Fuels; the Department of Groundwater Resources; and the Department of Mineral Resources that is
tasked with conserving and rehabilitating natural resources and environment.

As a result, mineral and groundwater laws become mainly related to the duty of newly established
departments. The Department of Mineral Resources, on its part, had initially worked mostly under the
section 6 bis of the mineral law following the restructure. However, from 2002 onward, the department
has discovered many more fossils of ancient mammals and dinosaurs. Local people in those areas are
interested in developing the discovery sites as attractions. Without proper management, fossils with
academic value could be damaged. The Department of Mineral Resources has thus introduced the Fossil
Protection Act B.E. 2551 to protect and manage fossil sites and fossils in line with academic principles.

Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan chaired the meetings of
the National Minerals Management Policy Committee (NMC). The Minister of Natural
Resources and Environment, the Minister of Industry, the Minister of Interior and the
Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives in their capacity as the deputy chairs of the NMC
also joined the meetings. In all, a total of 27 NMC members and specialists attended
the 1st NMC meeting on 12th June 2017 and the 2nd NMC meeting on 9th August 2017 at
the Government House to draw up the master plan on national minerals management
and public participation via Pracharat or public-private mechanisms.

Reporters joined the “Minerals Trail and Mining Ways” activities
between 3rd and 4th August 2017. The activities were held as a press tour to
Thong Pha Phum District, Kanchanaburi Province so that reporters could
see mineral-resources works in the area. During the press tour, reporters
visited the lead mine that used conventional mining techniques in the
past and turns to use modern tunnel mining technologies now. In addition,
they were brought to the now-defunct Pilok Mine. Operated by the
Mining Organisation, it sat on Chang Seuk Hill. It was mined in the past
but, nowaday, it is an eco-tourism attraction for adventurous tourists.
This press tour boosted media understanding in the Minerals Act.
