GRAMMAR
PRESENT CONTINUOUS FOR FUTURE 20 Look at Tom's diary. What is he doing next
week?
■ We often use the present continuous to talk about
things that are happening now or at this moment. Monday → meet his friends - 3 p.m.
Tuesday → watch a movie - in the evening
→ Tim’s in the park. He’s climbing a tree. Wednesday → play basketball with Tony - 4 p.m.
■ We can also use the present continuous to talk Thursday → have lunch with his cousin
Friday → visit his grandparents
about our future plans and arrangements. Saturday → go to the cinema - 7 p.m.
→ I’m meeting Julie later. We’re playing tennis. Sunday → have a birthday party
■ When we use the present continuous for future,
we usually use a future time expression (later, on
Monday morning, at 6 pm tomorrow, etc.) to show
we’re talking about the future and not now.
→ We’re learning how to ski.
(= now, at this moment)
→ We’re learning how to ski next weekend.
(= future arrangement)
