2 Message 獻辭Music and hymns are timeless expressions of prayer and unity. St. Augustine once urged Christians to keep walking forward in hope: “Sing, but walk! Do not stray from the road. Do not turn back. Do not stop.” Pope Leo XIV encouraged everyone to embrace this spirit, especially during the Jubilee Year, reminding them that sacred music is not just a legacy of the past, but a living gift that continues to nourish the Church today.It is my pleasure to give my blessings to the 5th Anniversary of Hong Kong HYMNOS Festival Society, established in 2020, is the first lay Catholic Association in Hong Kong to promote hymn singing through public performances, new compositions and lectures. 3Dong Quang Vinh and the Bamboo Orchestra “Suc Song Moi” gently blend traditional bamboo instruments with a touch of modernity, creating a distinctive sound that has been warmly appreciated by music enthusiasts in Viet Nam. Under the direction of conductor Dong Quang Vinh, Suc Song Moi is dedicated to fostering cultural exchange and promoting Vietnamese music to audiences around the world.The Consulate General of Viet Nam in Hong Kong consistently supports cultural exchange activities, including film, music, literature, cuisine, and tourism. The year 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of Vietnam-China relations, officially declared as the Year of People-to-People Exchange by senior leaders of both countries. 4 The 2025 Hong Kong Hymnos Festival marks its 5th anniversary. In this journey of curating the Festival, “Music for the Soul” sums up our direction and we like to share the effect with you.In 2025, we welcome prestigious and reputable musicians and choir groups. This year’s Festival presents two concerts and five HymnFest lecture concerts in Hong Kong and Hanoi, with invited musicians from Paris and Hanoi. From Hanoi, reputable groups including Suc Song Moi Music Ensemble and Hanoi Voices Choir are making their debut performance in Hong Kong, and the Le Choeur Gregorien de Paris opens the Festival with Vêpres Chorales under HymnFest 1. The Hymnos Festival Choir, formed in 2023, returned once again with the same enthusiastic response from 33 parishes and over 200 individuals, joining this year’s Festival, and some 40 choir members joining us in Hanoi, Vietnam to perform at the St Joseph’s Cathedral. We are most grateful to our home-grown musicians. 6 香港聖詠節Hong Kong Hymnos FestivalThrough Music, We Connect. Through hymns, the Festival wishes to bring peace and harmony to the community and to ourselves. As part of our mission, we reach out to different segments of the society, not only in our local community, but to different parts of the world. We present high standing concerts and lecture concerts, for public’s appreciation and to deepen the understanding of this genre.The sharing of the message of love through hymns singing is the main focus of the Festival. Peace and harmony start with oneself and one’s family, while love and hope are the seed of our faith. Hymn is a unique genre in music, which is faith-focus. Yet, music has no border and its positive energy goes beyond the religious realm. Hymn is soothing and calming and is excellent for meditation. The lyrics carry the words of God, which we can all learn and reflect on. Through hymn singing, we hope to bring enlightenment and awakening of our souls.In the busy life of our world, discorded work-life balance leads to yearning for an anchor to reclaim quality living. The work praises the body of Jesus and pays tribute to his sacrifice and redemption. It is a fourpart choral piece in the style of the Classical period. Its rigorous harmonic technique and structure embody this musical language and spirit. Furthermore, the composer incorporates a solo voice and utilizes various orchestration techniques to enhance the contrasting timbres and textures of the work. The composer, Handel, completed this masterpiece in just 24 days, emphasizing the central theme of the Messiah as the Savior. The music throughout the piece is filled with dramatic tension and vivid imagery.Within the entirety of Messiah, there are three choral works that clearly point to “the glory of God,” employing the technique of “word painting” to great effect. One of these is And the Glory of the Lord. The piece begins with a distinct triple rhythm that symbolizes the Trinity, while the bass soloist sings the melody of “the glory of the Lord”, representing the Messiah’s birth through the womb of the Virgin Mary. Alexander曲：約翰．盧特 | 詞：塞西爾．弗朗西絲．亞歷山大All Things Bright and Beautiful is an Anglican hymn, also sung in many other Christian denominations. The words are by Cecil Frances Alexander and were first published in her Hymns for Little Children of 1848. Alexander was dedicated to church Sunday school education, and each week she would write a verse to teach children the truths of the Bible. This hymn beautifully describes the splendor of God’s creation, resembling a timeless painting that invites people to appreciate and worship the wise and wonderful Creator. The music for this hymn was composed by the renowned British contemporary choral composer John Rutter. His melody features wide leaps, enhancing the lively and ever-changing beauty depicted in the lyrics. PROGRAMME NOTES 樂曲介紹11Schafe können sicher weiden (Sheep May Safely Graze) was originally composed as an aria for soprano and first appeared in the secular cantata Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd, BWV 208, making it one of Bach’s earliest secular works, completed on February 13, 1713. This piece was written in Leipzig for the 31st birthday celebration of Herzog Christian (Duke of SaxeWeissenfels), with lyrics provided by the librettist Salomo Franck. The cantata celebrates the joys of hunting through the lens of Greek mythology.The entire work consists of 15 movements, and today we will perform the ninth movement, Schafe können sicher weiden. While both the song and its lyrics are rooted in secular music, they depict lambs peacefully grazing on lush meadows, enjoying a sense of tranquility. This imagery resonates with Psalm 23, which emphasizes the importance of maintaining a close relationship with God to attain a fulfilled life. Just as a sheep’s existence depends entirely on the shepherd, who provides, leads, protects, and cares for them, so too does God watch over and love us, enabling us to experience fulfillment and joy in our lives. Due to its fitting context, this piece is often performed by choirs in church settings. These songs comprised Schubert’s Liederzyklus von Fräulein vom See. One of the songs, titled Ellens dritter Gesang (Ellen’s Third Song), became the basis for the song Ave Maria, which is based on the Catholic prayer of the same name. Although Schubert did not compose the music for this song as a prayer, it has become one of the most popular and well-known Catholic songs. The second part, which focuses on Christ’s earthly mission, culminates in the incomparable Hallelujah one of the most recognizable and beloved pieces in the choral/orchestral canon.Though in popular culture the “Hallelujah” chorus has come to signify any kind of jubilant celebration. She has studied with Professor Li Ming-qiang, Mr. Shiu Yuen-shun, Ms. Chan Li-wah Amelia, Mr. Ray Wong, Mr. Bastien Tai, and Ms. Li Yuen. As a member of the HKBU Girls’ Choir, Wong participated in overseas performances in the USA and Canada. She has also been invited to join many piano masterclasses. As a composer in multidisciplinary fields of music composition, Cheng’s work is inspired by a variety of Western and Eastern musical styles. He studied music at King’s College London and the University of Hong Kong, where he obtained a Master of Music and a Ph.D., respectively. Since 2022, he has divided his time between living in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. His orchestral works have been performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Surrey Philharmonic Orchestra, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Cheng has published over 70 contemporary pieces, along with more than 200 pop songs and commercial music productions. Much of his music is available on Apple Music, Spotify, Netflix, and Disney+. HONG KONG CONCERT PERFORMERS 香港音樂會演出者25Mo Shuangshuang was born in Hengyang, Hunan Province, and began learning the piano at a young age. At 15, she moved to Guangzhou to study composition at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music Affiliated Middle School, studying piano under Yufei Liu. At 18, she was admitted to the Composition Department of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where she continued her graduate studies. In 2013, Mo settled in Hanoi, Vietnam, with her Vietnamese husband, Dong Quang Vinh, and founded the Suc Song Moi Bamboo Ensemble. She later established the Hanoi Voices Choir International Choir (2016) and the Suc Song Moi Traditional Orchestra (2023). During her 11 years in Hanoi, she has performed domestically and internationally, organizing solo concerts and cultural exchange activities, combining Eastern and Western elements. She has served for several consecutive years as piano accompanist for the APAC Choral Festival and for the Hanoi Voices Choir International Choir, with repertoire including Carmina Burana, Messiah, and Mozart’s Requiem.莫雙雙出生於湖南衡陽市，自幼學習鋼琴。15歲時，她赴廣州星海音樂學院附屬中等音樂學校習作曲專業，鋼琴師從劉羽飛老師。18歲時，她考入上海音樂學院作曲系，並繼續攻讀研究生學位。2013年，莫雙雙跟隨越南籍丈夫童光榮定居於越南河內。同年，她與丈夫成立了新活力竹樂團。2016年，她成立了河內之聲國際合唱團。2023年，她又成立了新活力民族樂團。在越南河內居住的11年內，她多次在國內外的舞台上演出，並組織了眾多專場音樂會與國際文化交流活動。她運用多年來學到的作曲思維，將創新與東西方元素結合，運用到音樂會與演出作品中，為越南音樂的發展貢獻了一些力量。莫雙雙連續多年受邀擔任「APAC合唱節」的鋼琴伴奏，並長期擔任「河內之聲國際合唱團」的管理與鋼琴伴奏。她演出的曲目包括奧爾夫的《布蘭詩歌》、亨德爾的《彌撒曲》、莫札特的《安魂曲》等等。她與新活力竹樂團在法國藝術中心合作演奏的聖桑《動物狂歡節》也為觀眾帶來了許多新的色彩。MO SHUANG SHUANG 莫雙雙 PIANIST 鋼琴
HONG KONG CONCERT PERFORMERS 香港音樂會演出者26 Hong Kong pianist Colleen Lee achieved international recognition after winning 6th Prize at the 15th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. She has performed extensively worldwide in solo recitals and with orchestras, including the Warsaw, China, Israel, and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestras. Lee made her debut with the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle in 2019 and served as the Artist Associate of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta during the 2010/11 season. She has appeared at major festivals, including the Duszniki Festival in Poland, Musicus Fest in Espoo, Finland, and Shanghai New Music Week. Recent performances include the world premiere of Charles Kwong’s Piano Concerto “Hereafters” and the 66th season of summer recitals in Warsaw this August. An enthusiastic chamber musician, she has collaborated with Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Ning Feng, Kang Dongsuk, Trey Lee, Daniel Müller-Schott, Alban Gerhardt, Lluis Claret, Sergei Nakarialov, and the Shanghai Quartet. The choir was founded in October 2017 by Andrew Leung, along with a group of Catholic music enthusiasts.The mission of VA is to sing church music to its highest standard. The choir is especially passionate in singing sacred choral music written in the Western “Classical” style, both old and new. VA is committed to the pursuit of musical excellence both inside and outside of the liturgy.VA takes residence at St. Joseph’s Church in Central. The choir has been invited to sing for various liturgies, as well as nonliturgical performances, at over forty churches in Hong Kong and Macau. The choir was also featured in the inaugural season of the Hong Kong Hymnos Festival in 2021, and has taken a central role again in the 2022 and 2023 Festival. Other recent projects of the choir include the world premiere of Andrew Leung’s Requiem for All Souls in 2021 and the Hong Kong premiere of Josef Rheinberger’s Requiem in D, Op. 194 in 2020. In 2019, VA collaborated with Babl, a Canadian choir, in a “Sacred Music Exchange” programme which includes a series of workshops and concerts in Hong Kong and Macau. HONG KONG CONCERT PERFORMERS 香港音樂會演出者28 The Saint Francis University Choir was formed in September 2024 to provide a unique opportunity for students and staff members of the University to perform choral music across a wide range of repertoire, particularly sacred choral music. The group made its debut appearance at the “Journey of Hope” Musical Offering in honor of Pope Francis at Hong Kong’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in December 2024 and presented its first full program in May 2025. The choir recently embarked on its first international tour to Italy and the Vatican, singing at the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter, the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, and other sacred sites.The SFU Choir currently sings under the leadership of Mr. Andrew Leung (music director) and Mr. Kenneth Ma (assistant director), and is accompanied by Mr. Kevin Ma (accompanist). A prize-winning conductor, he received the Most Promising Conductor Award at the 2nd International Choral Conductors’ Competition in Preveza (2025). As Choirmaster of the University Choir, he led the ensemble to several awards, including the Champion Award at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Kenneth co-founded Luff Chorus and 昔唱 Embrace Chorus, promoting choral culture and serving dementia patients. From 2004 to 2013, he studied orchestral conducting at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music on a government scholarship, earning a master’s degree. Upon returning to Vietnam, he served as Principal Conductor of the Vietnam National Opera & Ballet, Music Director of the Suc Song Moi Traditional Orchestra, and the Hanoi Voices International Choir.In 2017, Dong won the international ‘Hibiscus Best Performance Award’ at the CHINA-ASEAN International Art Festival. Over the past decade, he has arranged and composed hundreds of large-scale Vietnamese and classical works, performing in over 20 countries. Notably, he and his wife Mo Shuangshuang were invited as ‘China-Vietnam Friendship Messengers’ to perform for top leaders during state visits by General Secretary Xi Jinping in 2017 and 2023.In 2023, Dong was selected by the Japanese government to conduct the ‘Vietnam-Japan Festival Symphony Orchestra,’ performing in six Japanese cities to celebrate 50 years of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations. The choir comprises over 220 passionate singers who are familiar with choral hymn singing. Its members include choir members, conductors, and organists from churches and community choirs. They joined the Festival Choir to widen their scope and exposure in hymn singing, as well as to refine their choral techniques. HONG KONG CONCERT PERFORMERS 香港音樂會演出者34 Prof. Chan Wing Wah, JP is Associate Dean of the School of Music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. As a renowned composer and conductor, he was the first Resident Composer of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He has composed 10 symphonies and over 200 works for Chinese, Western, Japanese, and Korean instruments, as well as chamber music and songs. Seven symphonies were released on CD, with Symphony No. 5 and No. 6 published by the People’s Music Publishing House, and Symphony No. 8 and No. 10 released by the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing.Prof. Chan’s works have won awards such as First Prize in the International Double Reed Society Composition Contest (USA) and the Yoshiro Irino Memorial Award (Japan). His compositions have been performed in over 30 countries and are featured in the New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians Online. He was appointed Justice of the Peace in 2000.Since 1995, he has served as Music Director of the Hong Kong Oratorio Society, leading international performances, including Symphony No. 8 in San Francisco and Los Angeles (2017), and Symphony No. 9 in Toronto (2019). In 2022, his Symphony No. 10 was premiered by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.An alumnus of CUHK, he earned his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in composition from the University of Toronto. He is the founding director of the Cathedral Schola of Macau and the music director of the Coro Diocesano de Macau. Previously, he served at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of China Church in Hong Kong, and St. Pius X Catholic Church in Atlanta, USA.Andrew studied sacred music at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, USA, focusing on vocal performance, organ, conducting, and Gregorian chant. Upon returning to Hong Kong in 2017, he established Vox Antiqua, a choir specializing in sacred choral music, which has performed in over 40 churches under his direction. Since 2018, he has also led The Cecilian Singers, one of Hong Kong’s oldest choirs, and recently became music director of the newly established Saint Francis University Choir.Andrew is passionate about promoting sacred music. He serves as a board member of the Hong Kong Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and the Hong Kong Hymnos Festival, and as artistic director of the annual Musical Celebration in Honor of the Pope, organized by the Holy See Study Mission in Hong Kong.As a baritone, Andrew performs as a soloist and chorister with groups such as Tallis Vocalis and Die Konzertisten. He has presented papers at both local and international conferences, with recent projects focusing on music semiotics in the works of Olivier Messiaen, particularly in relation to synaesthesia, Catholic thought, and theology.Dr. Lee earned his B.A. in Music and M.Phil. in Music Theory from The Chinese University of Hong Kong before pursuing doctoral studies in the United States. Supported by a full scholarship and presidential fellowship, he completed his Ph.D. in Music Theory at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York.He is currently an Assistant Professor and Programme Leader of the Higher Diploma in Music Studies at Saint Francis University and Caritas Bianchi College of Careers. He is also a columnist for Sing Tao Daily and Kung Kao Po. While commercially active, Chan has played a significant role in Hong Kong’s music industry. He was previously a lecturer at the Hong Kong College of Technology, Director of the Pop Music Department at Baron School of Music, and a presenter for RTHK Radio 4 and Radio 2, as well as a post-producer for Disney Channel Hong Kong.Throughout the years, Chan has worked with numerous globally acclaimed artists, including Paul Potts, Yundi Li, David Garrett, Huang MengLai, Huang Ying, Connie Talbot, Patrizio Buanne, Coco Lee, Winner Hsu, and Chau Pak Ho, among others. She later graduated from the Royal College of Music with a Master’s degree in Music, supported by the RCM Scholarship and the Christopher & Susan Gordon-Wells Award. At the College, Jessie studied organ performance with David Graham and organ improvisation with Sophie-Véronique CaucheferChoplin.In 2012, she received the Eric Thompson Trust grant to participate in the International Organ Festival Haarlem in the Netherlands. In the same year, she won both the First Prize and the David Sanger/Bach Memorial Prize in the Glasgow Society of Organists Paisley Abbey Organ Competition in Scotland.During her studies in London, Jessie served as the organist of Holy Trinity, Dalston. She began learning piano at the age of four under her mother Lin Ching’s guidance, and by the age of eight, she had achieved excellent results in her Grade 8 piano exam, Grade 6 vocal exam, and Grade 5 Music Theory from the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).Yuen showcased her talent at the 77th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival 2025, where she earned second place in the Chinese solo vocal category and third place in the English solo vocal competition. In 2023, she started vocal lessons with the renowned vocalist Ms. Chan Siu-kwan, further honing her skills.Yuen has also lent her voice to advertisements, including recording the theme song for Dettol HK. In 2021, she participated in the large-scale original Cantonese musical “King of Singers”, produced by The Hong Kong Children’s Choir, where she played the role of “Ha Mui”. Their mission is to worship and pray through song while building a closeknit community.Every Sunday at 10:30 AM, Emmanuel Choir leads music for the English Mass at North Gate (Cua Bac) Church in Hanoi. During Christmas and Easter, they prepare traditional carols for Mass and special concerts. The choir also collaborates with other church choirs in Hanoi for feast days, performing in both Vietnamese and English.Beyond the church, Emmanuel Choir has performed at venues such as the Hilton, Pan Pacific, and InterContinental Landmark 72, showcasing their music to wider audiences. HANOI CONCERT PERFORMERS 河內音樂會演出者The Hanoi Catholic Youth Choir, founded on July 26, 2015, by conductor Lê Đoài Huy, is a community of individuals who share a love for music, especially choral singing. Its purpose is to glorify God through musical activities such as performing sacred music, serving at Mass, and evangelizing through music. She was the first female recipient of The Flentrop Scholarship, enabling her residency at Flentrop Orgelbouw and further studies with renowned Dutch organists. She received the Artistic Excellence Award from the Jacobs School of Music (Indiana University) and Third Prize in the John R. Rodland Memorial Organ Competition.Ko has performed at prestigious venues, including Trinity Episcopal Cathedral (Portland, OR), St. Mark’s Cathedral (Seattle), St. George’s (Hanover Square, London), Central Synagogue (NYC), and the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine (NYC). She also appeared on the Pipedreams Live broadcast, hosted by NPR.Currently a doctoral candidate at the Jacobs School of Music, Ko studied with Janette Fishell (Indiana University) and David Briggs (St. John the Divine).
