• organising regular meetings between the Gram Panchayat and all the adult members of the village
• training the villagers in the art of becoming self-reliant
• securing local participation in welfare projects
E. Think and answer.
1. Answers may vary. We have local-self-governing bodies as India is a large country. It is difficult for the state or
the central government to maintain local affairs of every village and every town. Thus, for convenience at the
grass-root level, we have local self-governing bodies, both in villages and towns.

C. Write (T) for true and (F) for false.
1. False 2. False 3. False 4. True 5. False
D. Answer the questions. Social Studies
1. In the olden times, Emperor Ashoka built stupas at Sanchi and Sarnath, and many people visit them. There are a
number of temples that were constructed during the olden times. They are also a part of the monument family.
The temples are beautifully carved, finely sculpted and look splendid. Some of them have unique features such as
the well-known Golden Temple in Amritsar (golden in colour) and the gopuram or two towers of the Meenakshi
Temple in Tamil Nadu. The Amarnath Temple, the Venkateswara Temple (Tirupati), the Kalighat Temple (Kolkata),
the Konark Sun Temple (Odisha), the Dilwara Jain Temple (Rajasthan), the Brihadeeswara Temple (Thanjavur)
and the Khajuraho Temples (Madhya Pradesh) are visited by a large number of people every year. The different
styles of temples reflect the culture of different communities and groups. Thus, Indian temples are a part of
Indian culture as they reflect the diversity of our country.
2. The Ajanta and Ellora Caves in Aurangabad are rock-cut caves which are world famous tourist spots. In Ajanta,
(99 kms from Aurangabad), there are 30 caves, each carved in the hills. These caves have beautiful paintings
that depict the life of the Buddha. The detailed carvings on the walls, pillars and entrances are hundreds of
years old. Inside the caves, there are prayer halls and monasteries, where the Buddhist monks lived. The Ellora
Caves are situated 26 kms, North of Aurangabad. There are 34 caves, with Jain and Hindu temples. They tell us
about the kind of clothes, jewellery and lifestyle of people at that time.
3. There are basically two main kinds of dance forms and music in India—folk and classical. Some classical dances
of India are Bharatnatyam (Tamil Nadu), Kuchipudi (Andhra Pradesh), Manipuri (Manipur), Odissi (Odisha),
Sattriya (Assam), Kathakali and Mohiniyattam (Kerala). Some well-known folk dances are Bhangra and Gidda
(Punjab), Ghoomar (Rajasthan), Dandia and Garba (Gujarat), Lavani (Maharashtra), Bihu (Assam), Dumhal
(Jammu and Kashmir), Hikat (Himachal Pradesh), Dhamyal or Dhup (Haryana), Chhou (Odisha) and Chholiya
(Uttarakhand). Folk dances are performed to express joy and happiness during weddings, festivals and during
harvesting of crops.
4. There are a variety of festivals which are celebrated in different parts of India such as Diwali, Durga Puja, Dussehra,
Christmas, Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Zuha, Gurpurab and many more. Some of the harvest festivals that are celebrated
include Baisakhi in Punjab, Onam in Kerala, Bihu in Assam and Pongal in Tamil Nadu. India is a unique country.
We celebrate festivals to welcome the seasons, the harvest, the rains or the Full Moon. A number of festivals
are common to most parts of India. However, they may be named and celebrated differently. Vibrant colours,
music and festivity keep the country alive. People decorate their houses, wear new clothes, exchange gifts and
sweets, and celebrate together.

Social Studies 5. In the olden times, Emperor Ashoka built stupas at Sanchi and Sarnath, and many people visit them. There
are a number of temples that were constructed during the olden times. They are also a part of the monument
family. The temples are beautifully carved, finely sculpted and look splendid. Some of them have unique features
such as the well-known Golden Temple in Amritsar (golden in colour) and the gopuram or two towers of the
Meenakshi Temple in Tamil Nadu. The Mughals brought their own style of architecture in India, which had
domes and minarets, like in Humayun’s Tomb, Red fort and Jama Masjid. Thus, temples building activity has
been a constant factor in the history of our country, from the ancient times to the present.
E. Think and answer.
1. Answers may vary. The forts of India are made in important places in former kingdoms. They were residences of
the kings and their families. The walls of forts were built high and were surrounded by a moat. They had huge
gateways which were elaborately carved. The inside complex had many quarters and rooms for everyone in the
Royal household. There were special rooms for kings to meet their courtiers and families. There were separate
rooms for sports and recreation, which were beautifully decorated. The Sheesh Mahal in the Agra fort and in
Jaipur are an examples of beautiful fort architecture.
2. Answers may vary. Apart from Hindustani and Carnatic music, there is jazz, hip hop, rap, classical, country,
religious and children’s music.
