fashion. When InStyle highlights any of the myriad social
issues facing this country or celebrates the women who
speak up for themselves and for others, these trusty,
rusty words will appear. They are often accompanied by a highly theatrical
“Unfollowing!” (We greet that one with a cheery emoji wave.)
Now, on Instagram—a cyber scrapbook we follow for kicks—the stakes are low. For the late
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, early in her career, the stakes were sky-high. At law school in the 1950s,
RBG (one of only nine women in a class of hundreds) was not only told to stay in her lane but
referred to by some of her male classmates as “Bitch.” (Years later, when this unfortunate
nickname was brought to her attention, she responded, “Better bitch than mouse.”)
RBG is justly famed for her advancements of women’s equality, but it’s worth remembering
that she spent her 87 years breaking both sexes out of their boxes. In the landmark 1975
widower case Weinberger v. Wiesenfeld, she successfully argued that men could care
for children and should receive benefits too. She was compassionate, she was pragmatic,
and she saw the dangers of staying in one lane not just for herself but for society at large.
Following RBG’s death in September, my team produced a tribute cover featuring this
picture from 1977 (above). The then 44-year-old lawyer is in Italy, sitting at her desk. I love
her expression of calm concentration, of working her way through a thought. (I dig her
earrings too, but that’s by the by.)
As we were preparing this issue, I was thinking about the women “who showed up”
during these hard few months and their vastly different paths to success. From cover star
Kristen Stewart to the iconic Tina Turner, from the “persistent” Senator Elizabeth Warren
to the young, thoughtful Storm Reid to the self-styled Kate Bosworth—they are all originals.
If RBG had stayed in her lane, millions of women might not have left theirs. And now if
anyone tells you to stay in yours, respond with a .

Look for this logo, inspired by People’s “100 Reasons to Love America
This Year,” on the pages of this issue. Then read the uplifting stories
of badass women across the country who are spreading hope and
advocating for unprecedented societal change in the face of COVID-19.

With more than 40 films under her belt, Kristen Stewart
is no stranger to enduring extreme conditions to get the
shot. We photographed the Happiest Season actress in
her childhood hometown of Woodland Hills, Calif., where
the heat index reached a scorching 110 degrees. Armed
with water, bug spray, and sunscreen, Stewart was as
resilient as ever. She even shrugged off an unfortunate
wasp sting as she posed in a mix of sleek black dresses and
colorful suiting ensembles paired with comfortable Emme
Parsons flats. The final look, a sangria-hued jacket and
matching pants from Christopher John Rogers, was one
of Stewart’s favorites—and it made for an unforgettable
ending to the shoot. “That deep red looked so beautiful
on Kristen as the sun began to set,” says stylist Rebecca
Ramsey. “The temperature finally dropped a bit in the Hills,
and we had the best—and the last—light of the day.”

As Joe Biden’s vice-

by a major political party.
“That I am here tonight is a

Lady Gaga

With kindness as her platform, Gaga has emerged as
one of 2020’s most empathetic performers. In April
she kicked off—and helped plan—the massive
livestream concert “One World: Together at Home,”
which raised nearly $128 million to support the fight
against COVID-19. In May she dropped her new
album, Chromatica, which gave us all something new
to dance to in our living rooms. And in August she took
home five trophies at the MTV VMAs while donning a
series of eclectic masks—including an out-of-this-
world face shield paired with a voluminous Area dress
worthy of its own moon landing—and preaching the
importance of social distancing. All hail the Lady.
