GIRLGAZE FOUNDER AMANDA DE

FOR WOMEN TO TELL THEIR STORIES,

SO SHE CREATED ONE HERSELF

Amanda de Cadenet is a true girl’s girl. If
you need proof, look at her photography
depicting powerful women in unguarded,
intimate moments. Or rewatch old
episodes of her Lifetime talk show, The
Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet,
where she conducted interviews with guests like Hillary

Clinton and Issa Rae. Her book of essays, It’s Messy: On

Boys, Boobs, and Badass Women, also chronicled what it

means to be a feminist in the 21st century. And then there’s

Girlgaze, de Cadenet’s digital media company and job

platform dedicated to creating opportunities for female-

identifying image-makers. “I’ve always been about badass

women,” de Cadenet says. “My goal is to leverage my

privilege and open the door for as many as possible.”

In 2016 de Cadenet put a call out on Instagram for

aspiring photographers highlighting the female perspective.

These days horror and
comedy are the two subjects I
gravitate toward. But I’m also
working on a romantic
comedy called Born Again
Virgin that was picked up by
Warner Bros. TV. My grandpa
was unique in that he created
The Dick Van Dyke Show,
which was the first sitcom to
show the head of a family both
at home and at work. I hope to
follow in his footsteps by breaking norms and creating new
ways to tell a story.
But my grandpa wasn’t just a creative artist. He was also a
force for justice and morality. His and my father’s political
engagement has definitely rubbed off on me, and I’m
thankful for that. This November I will be voting in my
grandfather’s honor. Wouldn’t it be nice to elect someone
who believes in science, respects women, honors the
Constitution, and doesn’t bully people on a daily basis?
Although my grandfather’s work filled everyone’s lives with
laughter, this election is no joke. Above all, he taught me to
speak up for a better future for this country. Let’s make it
happen for him. —ROMY REINER

I’m really drawn to the East Village
because of its history,” says Nepal-

student Arpana Rayamajhi. “I
grew up in Kathmandu listening
to a lot of punk rock and going to
concerts—the East Village was
basically a relic.” Rayamajhi moved to New
York in 2012 to study art at Cooper Union,
the legendary university near Union Square,
and has stayed in the neighborhood ever
since. Now her apartment, which she shares
with her husband, tattoo artist Bruno Levy,
doubles as her studio . It’s where Rayamajhi
creates her signature beaded jewelry. “I love
the way the light hits this room,” she says
of the cozy enclave. “We have carpets from
Tibet and Nepal, and all the patterns inter-
lace and really work in the
space.” Like most people these
days, Rayamajhi has been
spending considerably more
time at home. “I enjoy it, but
after three months in lock-

started kicking in.” How did she
banish the quarantine blues?
“We got a gym bike,” she says,
laughing. “I’ve been on it quite a
