MY PRESENTATION

BEING a wise, humble and capable teacher is what
every teacher’s dream. A dream to inspire students and give
motivation to go forward. Classroom is the place for teachers
and students to spread the seed, create a big dream and
make it happen. Classroom is the teachers’ world to see the
real learning situation, challenges and opportunities to put
the students in a very mentally comfortable situation. To
be honest, students need tenderness, support and sincere
affection from a teacher whom considered as the second
parents at school.

As a good teacher, we are supposed to evoke the
students’ attention and motivation to study seriously in
happy condition. When they are happy, I’m sure every single
learning target and ojective will be easily achieved. This
is what I can learn from my parents who always give their

xvWOW ENGLISH xv

heart in teaching their children including me. God’s blessing
adjusts my life smoothly since I had the real inspiring teachers
of my life, which is my parents. I was grown up with full of
love, support and care eventhough we lived in a very limited
capacity. I thought that my parents should be exist in every
breath of mine. When I learnt something in the class, I always
present their faces, so I could fulfill all their wishes to be a
pious child and make them happy with my character. When
my friends invited me to do something bad, I need to reject
them by presenting my parents’ face that have struggled me
and sacrificed everything they have to earn me with a good
education. This book, I proudly present to my beloved parents.

Lots of Love,

PREFACE

THE GENERAL DIRECTOR OF TEACHER AND
EDUCATIONAL STAFFS,

THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND CULTURE,
(DIRJEN GTK KEMENTERIAN PENDIDIKAN DAN

KEBUDAYAAN)

The 2013 curriculum always makes changes year by
year significantly together with the educational autonomy.
It results a new paradigm of whole learning systems in the
class. The students are not an object of learning but more to
be a center of the learning. They are supposed to be a great
challenger who will do actions and changes dynamically,
toward the information, knowledge and technology which
are taught by the teachers..

All education packaging from the curriculum so called
KTSP is oriented to enhance a discovery skill, competence, and
talent development. Besides, it is aimed to sharpen their life
skills for the future. Today’s teacher should role as a facilitator
who facilitate the students’ need. Teaher is not the only source
who dominates the learning process but also to be an agent of
change. The teacher role is aimed to motivate, to boost and to
encourage the students to develop the students ability. which
is expected by the government. The output and outcome is
measured based on the national instructional objectives

WOW ENGLISH xvii

which are knowledge, competence, independence, creativity,
health, behavior, belief and citizenship (Depdiknas-Dirjen
Dikdasmen, Kurtilas SMA, Pedoman Khusus Pengembangan
Silabus dan Penilaian, 2013)

Regarding to the statement above, I do appreciate the
effort from an English teacher from State Senior High School 1
Balikpapan, Dayang Suriani, M.Pd, MM.Pd. to make an English
book entitled “WOW English” for Grade X. This book is written
as a teachers; creativity to enable the students to figure out
something in order to help the students find their own capacity
in learning English. This book production and implementation
should be evaluated basedon the subjects’ characteristic. and
competence both oral and written, receptive and productive.
It is all formulated in curriculum 2013. Hopefully, our work
and dedication will be blessed by Allah The Almighty.

PREFACE FROM
THE WRITER ABOUT SCL

Good Day or Morning Spirit!
My beloved students, I will tell you how to conduct
the roles in English class. As a teacher, I will facilitate all your
actions and give some clarifications around 15 minutes, so
the rest of time will be fully dominated by you all. To be
honest, the class will not be running well when the teacher
spoke too much and dominated the class without giving
many opportunities to the students to explore their ideas
and suggestions in learning process. They will create many
innovations using natural aid and technology in the terms of
power point combined with animation.
So, what we have to do in every single English meeting?
First, two students will open the class by introducing
themselves and definitely the teacher as the adjudicator.

WOW ENGLISH xix

They will have a small talking so called chit chat about the
topic that they would like to present. Second, in turn, they
will present the topic that has been assigned by the teacher.
Third, the presenters give the opportunity to others and ask
some questions based on the topic. Fourth, the students
try to answer all questions given by others based on their
knowledge. If they found some difficulties in answering the
questions, the teacher would clarify it around ten minutes.
Beforehand, the presenters need to invite the teacher first by
saying, “For further information, please welcome “MD”.

Then the teacher or “MD” will give clarification about
some questions that cannot be answered. After explaining
the topic, the teacher gives the floor back to the presenters to
close the meeting and it will be continued by another couple of
students. Well, dear. It is clear students work and does action
more and more as shown above. Their actions are totally
dominating the role of teacher whose job is facilitating the
students. The students will explore, elaborate even confirm
what have been learnt so far about English. That is what we
call “Student-centered learning.” So, please make your move,
don’t be afraid of being lost, if you have the right gear! Deal?

NO YES NO NO!

PART 2

Well my beloved students, to reduce our stress after having so
many hard lessons, below MD try to serve you a simple game
using Yes/No questions. You will be invited in pair or in group
to do this game. I know that you still remember how your
teacher teach you about Yes/No questions. It is so simple.
However, we need to do it quickly. You need to spent 1 minute
to answer 10 questions from 2 speakers in turn or vice versa.
Those who can finish quickly as the time given, They will be
the winner.

For example : Speaker 1 : Do You like me?

Speaker 2 : I do.

Speaker 2 : Can I borrow your book?

Speaker 1 : You can’t. etc

So, dear! Once, you say yes or no unintentionally, that means
your pair will be disqualified. What you have to remember,

LEARNING GRAMMAR
(GERUND)

PART 4

WHAT IS GRAMMAR?
• The way words are put together to make correct

sentences (Ur, 1996: 75).
• A system of rules governing the conventional

arrangement and relationship of words in a sentence
(Brown, 19994: 347).
• Grammar is a skeleton of language.
• The curriculum reemphasizes grammar learning.
• Grammatical competence is included in communicative
competence.

WOW ENGLISH 7

• Texts produced by students of secondary school should
be grammatically correct.

1. Gerund as Subject (GAS): Singing makes you happy.
2. Gerund as Object (GAO): Many people like singing.
3. Gerund used after Possessive (GUAPS): My singing

disturbs others.
4. Gerund used after Preposition (GUAPR): Krisdayanti is

good at singing.
5. Gerund used after certain verbs (GUACV): After singing

in front of people, I got money. Some certain verbs are
enjoy, stop, avoid, forget, promise, mind, practice, keep,
admit, start, finish, suggest, consider, appreciate, miss,

CHAIN EVENT
CONDITIONAL
SENTENCE TYPE 2

PART 6

• MD: Now let’s play while studying! The first student
starts a sentence with a second conditional clause. The
next student takes the result of the sentence, reforms
it into another condition and suggests a further result.

IF + S1 +V2 + O S2 + WOULD/COULD + V1 + O

For example, the first student says “If I had a million dollars,
I would buy a yacht”. The second students says “If I bought a
yacht, I would go for a sail”. …

The students may come up with: 11
• If I went for a sail, there might be a storm.
• If there were a storm, my yacht would sink.
• If my yacht sank, I would die.
• If I died, my parents would cry.

WOW ENGLISH

• If my parents cried, there would be a disaster.
• If there were a disaster, the story would end.

SEARCH AND SAY (2)

(WORK WITH NEWSPAPER)

PART 7

• Expressing feeling

is important in the

English language. Native

speakers of a language

use their feelings all time

to interact with others.

As these expressions

are frequently used,

they require special attention in language lessons. A

strong knowledge of this activity will help students to

become more active and confident users of their second

language.

• Practice: Search one unique picture which express

about feeling from the newspaper. Cut and stick it on

your book, say your feeling and give the unique reason.

Use your creativity and style to express your feeling.

WOW ENGLISH (Your feeling is happy).
I’m happy because….

14 WOW ENGLISH

SENTENCE, PROPOSITION,
PREDICATOR, REFERRING
EXPRESSION, UNIVERSE

OF DISCOURSE

PART 8

1. SENTENCE
A sentence is a grammatically complete string of words

expressing a complete thought.
A sentence is neither a physical event nor a physical

object. It is, conceived abstractly, a string of words
put together by the grammatical rules of a language.
A sentence can be thought of as the ideal string of
words behind various realizations in utterances and
inscriptions.
Sentence can be categorized as figurative language and
language use as the example below.
Figurative language: e.g. “You make my world so
colorful like never (a song by Daniel Sahuleka). As it has
certain meaning so the sentence doesn’t represent real
meaning of the words.
Language Use: e.g. ”Nothing’s gonna (going to) change
my love for you.” It is a love expression (a song by

WOW ENGLISH 15

George Benson). This sentence used by a speaker and
need a response from the interlocutor.

2. PROPOSITION NEW SENTENCE

Proposition is that part of the meaning of the utterance
of a declarative sentence which describes some state of
affairs. In other words, Proposition is something which
is only in mind and unspoken.

Example:
A child made a bomb.
He is Genius. (Proposition)
Because the child is genius, so he made a bomb.
(New Sentence)

3. THE PREDICATOR
A simple declarative sentence is the word (sometimes

a group of words) which does not belong to any of the
referring expressions and which, of the remainder,
makes the most specific contribution to the meaning
of the sentence. Intuitively speaking, the predicator
describes the state or process in which the referring
expressions are involved.
e.g. Ani’s daughter is cute.

Referring Expression Predicator

16 WOW ENGLISH

4. REFERRING EXPRESSION
A referring expression is any expression used in an

utterance to refer to something or someone (or a clearly
delimited collection of things or people), i.e. used with a
particular referent in mind are continuing.
e.g. I’m very thirsty. The underlined word shows RE.
Thirsty is predicator.

5. UNIVERSE OF DISCOURSE
We define the universe of discourse for any utterance as

the particular world, real or imaginary (or part real, part
imaginary), that the speaker assumes he is talking about
at the time
Examples :
• The rainbow always comes after the rain. (Real)
• People believe that when the rainbow comes, it

means that there are 7 angles turned down the
earth and took a bath in the water falls. (Imaginary)

Practice!
1. Jot down at least one paragraph which symbolizes

sentence, proposition, predicator, referring
expression, and discourse of universe as well! Do
it alone!
2. Song lyric analysis! Find out one song and analyze
the sentence, figurative language and language
use as the example below!

WOW ENGLISH 17

A song by Ten2Five with I will fly
• These are all the things I want to say (sentence).

Present tense
• I will fly into your arms (figurative language): It has

a certain meaning,
• How precious you are in my heart (language use):

Expressing admiration.

By working in pair, search 2 English Songs
from the 60th or today’s era. Make sure
that your songs consist of sentence,
figurative language and language use!
Present your song through CD or video
then sing those songs and analyze it
detail!
3. Analyze this song carefully! Find out the three
components as the previous example!

CRITICAL THINKING

WITH
EDWARD DE BONO’S
SIX THINKING HATS

PART 9

In the West, suggestions are usually criticized
immediately. Criticism is seen as the best way to improve
ideas and make good decisions. In Edward de Bono’s
view, this is wrong. He believes criticism is important,
but shouldn’t take priority. Let’s see how your hats think
of?

INTUITIVE CONSTRUCTIVE CREATIVE

INFORMATIVE REFLECTIVE CAUTIOUS

WOW ENGLISH 21

1. Intuitive means discuss first feeling about the ideas.
2. Informative means discuss only the facts.
3. Constructive means discuss only the advantages.
4. Reflective means discuss only the disadvantages.
5. Creative means create ideas.
6. Cautious means conclude and move on.
Practice!
Here are the local issues of our earth. By working with

the group, use your hat to solve the problems!

Let’s test your simple critical thinking!

Your mother will celebrate her birthday in a few days. Think
about a gift you would like to give her, with all your total
consideration and bring many benefits to her life.
Explain it comprehensively!

PART 11

In this part, MD will tell you the letter from her Malaysian
friend, Nely. The topic is about Malaysian Culture Speakers. Analyze
the reported speech from this letter.

WOW ENGLISH 25

Hi MD,
I spoke to Noy yesterday, and she agreed to be one of our
‘culture speakers’ at the conference. Unfortunately, she’s reluctant
to make a presentation. She said she was happy to answer questions
in the group discussion, though. I also spoke to Syafana. She’s very
keen to give a talk, which is obviously good news. So, I think, with
the two of them, we can arrange a presentation followed by a Q&A
session, or something like that. Amira is going to think of some
ideas, and meet Noy next week, so they can discuss them. I told
her we were happy for her and Noy to decide what to talk about. I
also called Rayhan about his ‘surprise gifts’ for the conference. He
refused to say what they are! He’s decided not to say anything until
the last minute, but he has promised to tell me what they are a
week before the conference . I don’t know what he’s planning but,
knowing Rayhan, It’ll be something ‘different’!

Regards,
Nely

1. Why did phone Noy and Amira?
2. How successful were her discussions with them?
3. Why did she speak to Rayhan?
4. Did Rayhan tell her what she wanted to know?
5. Analyze, how many reported speech you found from the

letter?
