NOVEL CRITICSM
TITLE “CINTA TIADA

BATAS”

PART 12

In this part of learning, we are going to have individual
assignment on novel criticism titled Cinta Tiada Batas. This
novel created based on the education need to fulfill the
national character towards the students in Indonesia. It taught

WOW ENGLISH 29

us a lot how to respect each other, be a thankful human and
implement all good principles, value and the indigenous value
in social life.

All students need to make critical review on this novel
which has four procedures. Type it in two sheets of paper
which contains:
1. Background of this novel
e.g. This story tells about how important is The figure of

daddy in Ani’s family. Bapak Syamsuddin who plays as

father was a kind hearted-man, wise, love his children

and like to help other people. …etc
2. Reader’s viewpoints
e.g. Bapak Syamsuddin taught us to do every single

thing in life with sincere heart. He also taught us about

the importance of unity in family. Besides, etc.
3. Strong point and weak point
e.g. The strong point: The setting of this picture is really

appropriate with the storyline so that the readers find

is easy to imagine how the characters play their role.

Further, the writer always use an easy language so that

the readers have no problems with certain vocabularies

which need hard thinking to understand….etc.
The weak point: The writer always uses a hard word

which is not suitable with young readers. It’s better if…

etc.
4. Personal Impression after reading the novel.
Look at from four visions of moral value which

are character building, self controlling, strategic

30 WOW ENGLISH

collaboration and total action as the following examples!
a. Character building
The character Building can be shown in chapter I, page

1, titled Namaku Ani. It stated when Ani introduced

herself in front of other students, she talked just the way

she is and very confident even though the clothes she

wore was messy.

- The character building is confident, brave and just the

way she is.
b. Self Controlling.
It can be shown in chapter …, page…, titled Baju Olah

Raga Tetangga. It stated when the ball hit Ani’s chest,

she did not angry even scolded those boys who did that.

She only welled her tears slowly.

Every student will have 7 minutes adjudication with MD.
There will be 8 questions they need to answer and analyze
based on the story you read. MD will give two kinds of score.
They are writing score which is closely related to cognitive
aspect, and adjudication one which is intertwined with
psychomotor aspect. MD will also give appreciation to the
best writer and adjudication by giving the 10 points combine
with their previous scores. For that reason, they need to show
their work to all students as learning experience. Good luck!

SHOW TIME!

PART 13

In this part, MD will divide the students into a group
of ten. Every student from each group will perform the story
and all characters of CINTA TIADA BATAS. It will be performed
by the students into a fairy tail. By selecting the students
carefully, there should be one student as a fairy. A fairy begins
the story by acting out as the narrator then attracting the
class attention by giving simple orientation.

WOW ENGLISH 33

Example: “Once upon a time, there was a cute beautiful
girl named Ani. She was a kind hearted girl who loved her
family a lot. She only had a father since her mother passed
away when she was a little. She had 4 brothers and two sisters.
They always helped one another.

After that, the fairy said, ‘SWITCH’ and one student’s
name, then he or she needs to continue the story from the
fairy. Example: Switch Alif, then Alif continues the story i.e. Ani
helped ‘Bapak’ to dry the clothes. ‘Kak Yanti’ helped Bapak to
cook in the kitchen.’ In this case, the students need to explore
their ideas and act the characters as maximal as possible using
all things he or she found in the class as learning media.

Then, the fairy continues choosing another students
by saying ‘SWITCH Rayhan, Hisyam, etc, till all students have
their turns to perform. All students have to perform and do
something like the previous instruction. The students who
cannot continue the story in 5’ given, he or she need to sit
down and get the average score which is only 75.

Practice!
You are going to go outside the class and search a certain

view or one thing which can be your inspiration to make one

figurative language. The things can be leaves, a paper, a pencil,
or even a friend you have. After getting the things you want,

express your feeling toward that thing. The following is what

MD’s thinking about pencil.

‘pencil’ Everyone is like a pencil,

It used to write down our life,

To correct our mistakes…

It’s not about the body of a pencil,

But the inside…

No matter what condition is it,

We need to continue writing,

Writing to be a better pencil…

MD is profound sure that you can make a better

figurative language through poetry. You just start writing from

a simple idea of one or two sentences. Keep trying, God will
provide you

THE IMPORTANCE
OF DADDY

PART 16

The behavior of parents,
brothers, sisters and friends can be a
great influence on the behavior of kids
as they grow. Healthy or unhealthy
behavior can be learned from those
around you. In connection with
Daddy as the important person in our
life, there is something that we need
to say to him, how deep is our love
to him. Even though sometimes, we
only obey to our mothers’ instruction
and neglect the existence of our Daddy since he earns our
life by working as whatever position to fulfill our daily needs.
Anyway, have you said ‘thanks’ to your Daddy? Have
you served him a glass of water when he returned home after
working all day long? Have you known that your daddy looked

WOW ENGLISH 43

so panic and worry seeing you were not in good condition? Do
you feel the same thing as your Daddy did to you especially
when he needs your hand massage his body after working
hard? Do you know that your Daddy get problems in his job
till his boss scolded him a lot? Do you know that he cries a lot
hearing that you did the wrong things in life?

Well, dear, in this part, MD let you speak one by one
to say about how importance is your Daddy to your life? To
attract your attention, MD will show you the video about ‘The
Importance of Daddy to Teenagers’ life! So, check this out!

UNDERSTANDING
PROBLEMS AND ITS

SOLUTIONS

PART 17

In This Part, MD will tell you how to know your friends’
characters. By knowing them, it is easy for you to know their
moody time or not when doing daily interaction. Jot down
in small paper, three bad and good characters you have in
2 minutes then submit that to MD! Make sure that you still
remember what you’ve written!

First practice!

My good characters are…. My bad characters are …

WOW ENGLISH 45

After that, MD will scramble your characters’ card and
give every student different card as he or she previously wrote.
Then, every student will ask one another to find their cards
back by asking their first good and bad characters, not to show
the cards to others. MD will start it from the first 5 students,
etc, so the class will not be disorganized. For instance:

A: “Are you a friendly girl but a hard headed one?”
B: “No” (if it is not suitable with you)
B: “Yes” (if it is suitable with you)
You guys need to struggle to find your card back by
asking others quickly. Those who did not get their card back,
or become the last contestant to find the card, he or she will
be invited to tell about all characters that he or she had.
The second practice is, MD will let you work in group of
6. By working with your group, you will try to find out a ‘win-
win solution of teenagers’ problem’ as the following:

Ani is 15 years old. She is not very
sociable. She has trouble in making
friends and always seems lonely.
What should you do to help her?

You guys need to find out 5 practice solutions which are
related to what teenagers’ thinking. If your answer almost
similar with MD’s solution, at least you get the gist of

MD’s thought, your group will get maximum score. The

46 WOW ENGLISH

winner of this case, will have the 2nd problems to be solved,
which is about an old man’s problem, as the following:

I am a 58 year-old man. I had a coupe of heart
attacks in the past, but I‘ve had no problems within this
year. I do a lot of sport and keep very fit. My weight hasn’t
changed since I was 20. My problem is people who say,
”By the way, Joe, how old are you?” The question never
has anything to do with our conversation. I don’t care
how old are they, so why should they worry about my
age? I would like to tell them, “It’s none of their business.
Is there a tactful way to say that?

LESSONS
WITH LAUGHTER

jokes which are also popular in many countries. When you
find something amusing, you are more liable to remember
it. When you discover new meanings for yourselves, you are

WOW ENGLISH 49

more likely to remember them because they laughed. This
means that language items contained in humorous texts are
more likely to be retained than if you had simply taught them
in a conventional way. For this reasons, you guys will retell
the jokes and stories to other students, even to your parents,
thereby reinforcing your learning.

The following jokes in part 1 contain examples of the
