The Redaction Team
Balikpapan Creativity Crew
Dear sir or madam,
I am one of the citizen of our beloved city. Through this letter,
I would like to share some of my thought to criticize our

For these past three years, I think he has been much more

of himself around the city, I really expect he would give
attention to water conservation, to plant more trees and
expel street vendors because endangering the pedestrian.
He claims he is an expert but it seems he has no capability

years old and had left us, my family and I to Kuala Lumpur
since 1998, after my father passed away. She could not stay in
Balikpapan longer because she always missed my father a lot.

If you want to advance in your career, you will have

you the experience that you need. But you should never
accept a job if it is not related to your career goals.

path will not give you the training or experience you
need or want. You will find yourself frustrated in such a
position and consequently will not perform your best.

Many people say that examinations should be
abolished because they are not the best measure of
students’ capabilities. These people believe that students
can study on their own and do better without the nagging
worry and pressure exerted by examinations.

Yet, there are persuasive reasons to show that
examinations should not be abolished. It is insufficient
that teachers assign homework and correct it. Because
this is not done under supervision, they cannot be sure
that it is really the work of the students themselves.
Moreover homework is not a test of students’ ability;
homework is more a method of merely keeping him
occupied.

Nowadays, in the hunt for jobs, students need to
produce some evidence of their capabilities. Prospective
employers like to see copies of examination results; this is
the only way a student’s qualifications can be judged. This
attitude greatly encourages the use of examinations, if
not making them a necessity.

RECYCLING GLASS BOTTLES
New glass bottles are made mainly of silica sand. The
sand is melted in a furnace, at a very high temperature.
Recycled glass bottles are made in a very similar way, but cost
less and use up fewer natural resources.
The process begins when people take their used bottles
and jars to a bottle bank.
Next, the bottles and jars are taken by lorry to the
recycling plant. At the plant, bottle tops and lids are removed.
After that, the glass is crushed into small pieces.
The crushed glass is then sent by lorry to a bottle factory.
Here, it is mixed with a small amount of silica sand. It is then
melted in a furnace, at a lower temperature than new glass.
Finally, the hot liquid glass is drawn out of the furnace
and fed into machinery that makes it into bottles.
Recycled glass is as pure and as strong as new glass.

The use of seat belt has been proven to reduce the

WOW ENGLISH 109

risk of injury or death in an accident. Seat belt has become a
standard component in cars.

The research shows that most car accidents will cause
an injury to the head. Frequently, drivers or the passengers
driving without seat belts die because of this. By wearing
the seat belts, the injury will not happen since the seat belts
restrain our body on the car seat when an accident happens.

Unfortunately, many cars, especially the old ones, don’t
have seat belts. This is because the traffic conditions in the
past were unlike the recent traffic conditions. The designer
of old cars didn’t consider a seat belt as an important part.
Besides, the drivers wearing the seat belts will think that they
are completely safe, so they may drive carelessly. They are
safe, indeed, but how about the safety of others?

The seat belt is only one of the Ways to reduce the risk
of car accidents. It doesn’t mean that we are completely safe.
In short, our safety depends on ourselves.
