To,

The Himalayan Times, Kathmandu
Sir,
Will you please kindly give a little space to my letter in your esteemed
and highly popular paper? I write to you to put forward the difficulties
which the public have to bear due to frequent breakdown of water
supply in the locality Adarshnagar- 13. We are in a very difficult
situation. The rainy season has come. The rivers are full of water. So,
there is no problem of electricity. I fail to understand the cause of the
frequent breakdown of water supply. We have not got even a single
drop of water for the last two days. No one knows the difficulties we
have faced these days. In my opinion, the breakdown is due to the
inefficient working of the Water Supply Department.
Will you very kindly publish my letter in your paper so that the
concerned authorities may come to know of it and warn those who are
responsible for it?
Yours sincerely

1. My Village
The name of my village is
Sundrawati. It is located in the
North East angle of Charikot, the
district headquarters of Dolakha
district. Dolakha is one of the
eastern hilly districts of Nepal in
which my village is situated.
About eight thousand people
have been living in my village. Among them, Brahmins, Chhetries,
Thamis, Kamis and Damais are the main castes. This village has a
majority of Hindus and Buddhists. Thamis are the followers of Buddhism.
They have their own language and culture. They speak Thami language.
Rest of the people speak Nepali. They follow Hinduism.
My village is a developing village of Dolakha district. Gravelled motor
able road has already been constructed throughout the village and other
developing projects are being introduced. The condition of drinking
water and irrigation is good. As for natural beauty, there are many green
forests and falls as well. Many small rivers flow through the village and
meet Dolti, the largest river of my village.
My village where there are six primary schools and one secondary
one is well known for the cottage industries throughout the district. It
178 Oasis Applied Grammar and Composition Book-6
produces many things such as furniture, baskets, ropes, Nepali papers,
cheese, etc. My village is also famous for temples of Goddess Kalinchok,
Goddess Sundrawati and Goddess Kalika. There are some unique things
that you can get in my village. They are religious tolerance and unity
among the people.
For the speedy development of this village, the graveled road should be
changed into highway and linked to Tibet, the self-governed region of the
People's Republic of China. The lines of electricity should be distributed
as soon as possible.
2. Cow
Cow is a domesticated herbivorous
mammal. It is the national animal
of Nepal. It has four legs, two
ears, two eyes and udder with
four nipples between the back feet
from which we get milk.
There are various kinds of cows in
Nepal. They are said to be Gauri
cow, a kind of holy cow liked by
god and goddess, Yak, the long haired Himalayan cow, Jarsi, the same as
local cow. A baby of a cow is called a calf. Among them, male is a bull-
calf and female is cow-calf. A young cow before its pregnancy is called
heifer. Most of the bull-calves are castrated and used for ploughing fields
and drawing carts.
In Nepal and other Hindu societies, the cow is regarded as the Goddess
Laxmi. On the occasion of Deepawali, cow is worshipped with flowers
and garlands and fed sweet things. In different kinds of festivals
and religious ceremonies cow is offered to Brahmins. In the society of
Hindus, a cow and a bull are left free for the rescue of the departed souls
form the ocean of sorrows.
A cow is a very useful animal. It gives us milk. In Hindu societies its milk
is regarded as a Holy Prasad. Its urine is used for making everything
holy. Its stool which is called dung can be very important fertilizer. It is
also used for cleaning and scrubbing houses.
Oasis Applied Grammar and Composition Book-6 179
Cow is not only useful during its life but also after its death. After its
death, its leather, bones, teeth and tail are used for bags, shoes, belts,
utensils and other things.
In Nepal cow is regarded as the national animal. In Hinduism, cow is an
incarnation of Goddess Laxmi. It is the living goddess. It is not only a cow
but also cow mother for every Hindu. Therefore, cow must be saved and
respected forever.
3. My School
I am Laxmi. I am a student.
The name of my school is
Shree Kshamawati Higher
Secondary School. It is located
in Kshamawati VDC Ward
No. 7 of Dolakha district. It
was established in 2005 B.S. It
is the oldest school in the district. There are twenty teachers and nearly
six hundred students from grade I to grade XII at present.
The building of my school is made of stone and concrete. At present,
there are four blocks. The main building has furniture, and other
physical materials such as blackboards, tables, chairs and benches. The
school building looks very beautiful with attractive views because it is in
the middle of a forest. The grassy lawns, stoned paths, different flowers
in the side and the tall and nice trees add beauty to the view of the
school. The wall of our school building is painted white and the doors
and windows are green.
The ladders to go upstairs are made of wood. Our head teacher's office
room is in the eastern corner of the main building. There is a staff room
next to the head teacher's on the first floor.
Besides the beautiful building, wide playground and gardens in front of
the school building draw our special attention. There are so many Kaphal
trees around the school. We climb up the Kaphal trees and pluck Kaphal
during the spring and summer seasons. There is a library building in
the eastern corner of the main building. It is small and separate. There
is a playroom for indoor games next to the library. A small building for
canteen is in the northern turning of the playground.
180 Oasis Applied Grammar and Composition Book-6
There are so many things that I like. The green forest, mountain
view, fresh environment, etc. are the main grandeur of my school and I
always feel pride for them.
Nevertheless, I always think that my school is one of the beautiful places
of the earth. May my school live long.
4. My Hobby: Gardening
The word 'hobby' means an activity that a person does for pleasure.
It is also a leisure-time activity, usually involving collecting objects such
as stamps or butterflies, or creating objects such as wood carvings or
embroidery, the fabric works. Once limited to people of wealth and
leisure, hobbies are increasingly pursued as modern technology makes
more free time available to more people.
When a man has free time he loves doing something for his hobby. Some
people have a hobby of collecting stamps. Some love reading books.
Some want playing something, some like travelling. Similarly, some
prefer talking, some like walking, some like dancing, some prefer singing,
some love painting and some like hunting. But I prefer 'gardening'.
There is a beautiful garden in front of my house. Various species of
flowers can be seen there. I plant various types of flowers in every
season. There are the plants of marigold, daisy, jasmine, hibiscus,
daffodil, etc. My garden always looks beautiful and pleasant.
Various flowers blossom in every season. In the autumn, my garden has
a special scene and gives off sweet smell. The autumn is Tihar season. So,
my garden is filled with marigold, chrysanthemum, amaranth, etc.
Everyday when I am free from my daily work, I go to the garden and
Oasis Applied Grammar and Composition Book-6 181
water the flowers. I always examine if they need some fertilizers or some
care.
My sister always helps me to pull the unnecessary weeds out.
My garden has an interesting history. Many years ago, one day early
in the morning, when I was doing my homework I was asked to bring
some flowers for worshipping gods and goddesses at home. I couldn't
refuse my grandfather's request. I left for getting flowers. I visited all
our fields but was unable to get even a single flower. At last I picked up
only some green leaves of marigold and came back. But when I arrived
home, my heart happily filled with an interest of a small garden. So, I
planned to make a small garden. After worshipping, my grandfather put
Teeka on my forehead and said, "May you be a devotee of God and have
a successful life." But he isn't in this world today. Nowadays my father
does this job.
Garden is a very important place for everyone. The persons who are fond
of nature love gardening. It is not only important for growing flowers but
also for having fresh air. If you have a garden, your home will look as
though it is a part of heaven.
5. Our Country Nepal
Nepal, officially Republic
of Nepal, is the most
beautiful Himalayan
country in South Asia. It is
locked within the rugged
ranges of the Himalayas;
the Tibet region of China
bounds Nepal on the north
and India on the south,
east, and west. It was cut
off from the rest of the world until the early 1950s, when a popular
revolution and the subsequent overthrow of the autocratic Rana dynasty
marked the beginning of Nepal's emergence into the modern world.
Kathmandu, the largest city of Nepal, is its capital.
Our country, Nepal known as the birthplace of lord Buddha is situated
in the southern part of Asia between huge China and India. It is nearly
182 Oasis Applied Grammar and Composition Book-6
500 miles long and 100 miles broad. About thirty million people live
and villages cover most of the areas. Most of the people are villagers. It
is a very new republican country lying in the lap of Mount Everest, the
highest peak of the world.
The land of Nepal is divided into three regions. They are: the Himalayan
region, hilly region and Terai region. Among them, the major part of
the country is occupied by hilly region. There are seven provinces and
77 districts in Nepal. Other main cities are Pokhara, Biratnagar, Birgunj,
Nepalgunj, Bhairahawa and Narayanghat.
Nepal is one of the democratic countries in the world. It was famous
for peace in the past whereas, nowadays, it is famous for revolution
and compromise. Gautarn Buddha, the messenger of peace or the light
of Asia and the founder of Buddhism, was born here.
Nepal has diversity in religion, culture, custom, caste and climate.
More than 80 percent people follow Hinduism. Rest are Buddhists,
Christians and others. The different people of different religions have
their own cultures, customs and traditions. The people living in Nepal
are of different castes and clans. So, it is known as a garden of four
castes and thirty-six sub castes. The main castes are Brahmins, Chhetris,
Newars, Rais, Limbus, Tamangs, Gurungs, Magars. Several languages
are spoken here in several communities. Nepali is the national language
of the Republic of Nepal.
I am proud of being a Nepali.
6. The Value of Time
Time is a conscious experience
of duration or the period
during which an action or event
occurs. Time is also a dimension
representing a succession of such
actions or events. Time is one of
the fundamental quantities of the
physical world, similar to length
and mass in this respect.
Oasis Applied Grammar and Composition Book-6 183
Time is an endless river that always flows. It always passes and passes.
No one can stop or catch it. The person, who does proper work in proper
time, is said to be the time catcher. He/She is said to be the time stopper
who can do a suitable work in suitable time. Time is like a tide that
waits for none. It is very valuable for all. So, you should know the value
of time and catch it. If time passes, our opportunity also passes. Those
people who do proper job in proper time are the best consumers of
time. Similarly, those who don't know the value of time can't do right
things in the right time and always remain left out in their every step.
To understand the value of time is your primary job because without
understanding the importance of thing you don't do it. One who doesn't
know the value of time and doesn't do particular job in particular time
misses particular opportunities. This is because most of you won't have
a chance to correct your mistakes.
Time teaches you many lessons. Your past teaches you a great lesson
about what to do at present. Your present teaches you what to do in
future. Look at the past and never repeat the mistakes. Go ahead with a
clear vision. You can overcome all the hindrances and achieve success.
There will be time waiting for you with an opportunity.
The value of time is indescribable. Would you like to understand the
value of time? If yes, begin to do your job immediately, but never wait
for tomorrow because future is not certain. You don't know what will
happen tomorrow. The future will create another new thing for you and
won't provide you the chance to fulfil your pre-desires. Hence, we need
to give more emphasis to the present. It is said that past is past, future
is dark and only present is the valuable time. Time is such a flash of light
that never repeats or comes back. If you catch the time rightly, your
future will be bright.
7. My Favourite Book
Book is a volume of many sheets of paper bound together, containing
text, illustrations, photographs, or other kinds of information. In a book
pages are sewn or glued together on one side and bound between hard
or soft paper covers to make them relatively durable and portable.
Books have been used for centuries to preserve and transmit knowledge
and information.
184 Oasis Applied Grammar and Composition Book-6
When I have free time from
my daily work I love reading
some simple books. I select
those books which teach
me some good ideas for my
living. I never see and read the
books of the photos of modern
girls. I never buy and read the
books of bad literature. This is
because they can damage our
thinking and mind.
My favourite book is 'Swasthani Vratakatha'. It is recited for one month
form Magh Shukal Purnima to Flalgun Shukal Purnima. This book
contains thirty- one episodes. The first, second and the third episodes
describe about the universe, earth and the creation of various creatures
in the earth. And from the fourth episode the stories about the life of
Lord Shiva, Goddess Satidevi, Goddess Parvati and other gods and
Goddesses begin. Among them the chief characters of this book are lord
Shiva and goddess Parvati.
This holy book tells us about the happy and sad moments of the lives
of our various gods and goddesses. The stories of Swasthani give us the
best way of living and waiting for death. Such stories save our lives form
being an atheist. Our lives will remain far from murder, lying, stealing
and other crimes and will be pushed toward a spiritual and religious life.
When we recite the story many people come to our house to listen.
Every day, before reciting the story we have to perform Puspanjali and
in the ending too. There are different Mantras for the Pushpanjali in the
beginning and ending. Everyone bows to the holy book and prays
to Swasthani Mata for one's own welfare. Then after, the Prasad is
distributed.

C. Story Writing
Fox and Grapes
One afternoon a fox was
walking through the forest
and spotted a bunch of
grapes hanging from a lofty
branch.
"Just the thing to quench
my thirst," he thought.
Taking a few steps back,
the fox jumped and just
missed the hanging grapes.
Again the fox took a few
paces back and tried to reach them but still failed.
Finally, giving up, the fox turned up his nose and said, "They're probably
sour anyway," and proceeded to walk away.
The King and the Monkey
Once, there was a
king. He had a friend
who was not a man
but a monkey. He
would help the king
in his works.
One day, the king
was sleeping and the
monkey was looking
after him.At the very
moment, a housefly came there and disturbed the king. The monkey tried
to chase the fly but couldn't catch it. The fly, finally, sat on the face of the
king.
The monkey became angry. He thought to kill the house fly with the
sword of the king.He picked up the sword and hit the king on the face
186 Oasis Applied Grammar and Composition Book-6
where the fly was sitting. The fly flew away but the king got wounded.
The monkey actually wanted to kill the fly, not the king. But because of
his foolishness,he hit the king with the sword.
Moral: Company of a foolish friend is harmful.
The Proud Cock
Long ago, there lived an old woman in a cottage. She had kept a cock
and some hens. The cock was
very proud but the hens were
obedient.
One night, one of the hens had
an evil dream. She said:“I had
an evil dream last night”.The
cock replied: “Did you? But be
careful all the time.”
However, the proud cock didn't
care about it.
Shortly, a fox came up and
praised the cock for his kingly look and sweet voice. He asked the cock to
sing.
The cock didn't understand the flatter and evil plan of the fox. He raised
his head and crowed loudly: cock-a-doodle-do. As he was crowing, the
cunning fox jumped upon the cock and killed him.
The woman heard the hens crying loudly and rushed out. She saw that
the cock was killed and being carried away by the fox.
Moral: Pride has a fall.

Debate on whether leisure or work makes a man happy.
Work Makes a Man Happy, not Leisure
Some people think that leisure makes a man happy. If a man has no
duty to perform in the day or night, he can be happy. Those people think
that work makes a man very unhappy because man has to work whether
he likes it or not. If people have leisure time, they can go for travel, visit
new people and places and enjoy life.
But I think leisure makes a man lazy and irresponsible. If a man has
nothing to do, he feels bored. On the other hand, if he is busy at work, he
can be more productive. He can keep himself busy, so he has no time to
think of evil things in life. It is true that overwork is distressing but then
if the work is satisfying it is also pleasant. Therefore, work is something
that makes a man happy, but not leisure.
