Direct and Indirect Speech

Read and learn.
• She said to us, "You are very honest."
• She said, "We have to finished this work in time."
• He asked, "What are you doing now?"
• She said, "Do that again."
• He said, "Speak politely."
Now, report these expressions in indirect speech.
Direct and Indirect Speech
Reported speech can be presented in two ways. When we use the actual
words of the speaker, we use Direct Speech; but when we report what the
speaker said in our own words, we use Indirect Speech.
Examples: Ram said, "I ate rice." (Direct Speech)
Ram said that he had eaten rice. (Indirect Speech.)
There are two parts in Direct Speech: Reporting Verb and Reported Speech.
The part before inverted comma is called Reporting Verb and the part inside
the inverted commas (" ") is called Reported Speech. See the following sentence.
Maya said, "I dance well."

If the reporting verb is in the present or future tense, the tense of the verb in
the reported speech is not changed.

Indirect : Anju says that she dances well.
Similarly tense doesn't change when universal truth or proverb is reported.
