The Mysterious School It was her first day at Nepal International School. Silva was in the 2nd grade. She missed her old school. She was in her new school. Everyone was new. So she was quite sure that she was going to hate this new place. At lunch break, Rosy and Pari, two girls from her class introduced themselves to her. They took her to a tree that stood at the corner of the playground. “Would you like to come to the Hole of Mysteries with us?" Pari asked her. “Hole of Mysteries! Where’s that?" Silva asked astonished. Near the tree was a hole, covered with hay and sticks. “This is the Hole of Mysteries," said Rosy. “Come on, let’s jump into the hole," said Pari. Holding each other’s hands, Pari, Silva and Rosy jumped inside. The hole became darker as they went deeper and deeper. Then all of a sudden it became bright. Lighted candles were everywhere. Silva was frightened. Seeing her, Pari laughed. Rosy pointed out to a rabbit lighting a candle. "That is Binky, the rabbit," said Pari. “She plans all our adventures." “Hi Binky!" said Rosy. “This is Silva, our new friend. Do you have a mysterious adventure for us today in the mysterious school?" Binky smiled and said, “Hi Silva, welcome to the Hole of Mysteries. Sorry girls, I only have a tiny adventure for you. It’s not easy, mind you. You have to be very alert as it’s to do with sounds. Be aware Approved by CDC, Nepal Pathfinder English Reader 2 65

of he who can talk. Now follow me. You have to find your way out." Binky went ahead. The girls followed her. They came to a small room. Binky had vanished. Once they got inside, the doors locked automatically. There were three animals in the room: a cat, a dog and a fish (inside a bowl). They could hear loud grunts from outside. “I think there’s a monster nearby," said Silva, frightened. “We have to take the help of these animals to get out!" whispered Rosy. “Or else we will have to stay here forever," said Pari. “How do we find our way out?" asked Silva, feeling quite nervous. “Let’s think hard!" said Rosy. “I think I know!" said Pari. “Remember, Binky told us to be aware of ‘he who can talk’. I think one of these animals can talk." “But which one?" asked Silva. 66 Pathfinder English Reader 2 Approved by CDC, Nepal

“Let’s find out," said Rosy. “Did you notice what the animals were doing when we got here? The cat was shaking its head and scratching itself. The fish was waving its tail and the dog was thumping its tail. I feel it must be either the dog or the fish. Let’s find out." Pari went up to the fish and said, “Can you help us?" The fish did not seem to have heard her and continued to wave its tail in the water. Then Silva went up to the dog and said, “What’s your name?" “Spike," replied the dog. “If you are looking for the exit, I can help you." “Can you really talk?" the girls asked the dog. “Yes, I can," said the dog. “Now press hard against the door and chant ‘Miracle’ three times. When the door opens, run fast until you reach the top. Don’t look back ever!" Approved by CDC, Nepal Pathfinder English Reader 2 67

The three thanked the dog and as soon as they chanted ‘Miracle’ thrice, the door opened. But, the grunting sounds grew louder, frightening the girls. They ran up the dark path, stopping only when they reached up, at the beginning of the tunnel. “Hey, we made it!" shouted Pari in excitement as they found back themselves in the mysterious school playground. “But what about the animals?" asked Silva. “They are in there, perhaps helping Binky plan our next adventure!" replied Rosy. “Wow!" said Silva. “I think I’m going to have a great time here, at this school!" The bell rang just then and the trio returned to their class in the mysterious school. Post-reading activities (Revisiting The Text) PLAYING WITH WORDS 1. All the trees made fun of that ugly tree. “How are you, hunchback?" the other trees always shouted and their laughter made the ugly tree feel sad. But, he never raised a voice against them. The ugly tree thought, “I wish I were as beautiful as the other trees. Why did God do this to me? Neither can I provide shade to the travellers nor can the birds make their nests on me. Nobody needs me." One day, a woodcutter came to the forest. He took a look at the trees and said, “These trees are lovely. I must cut them." went the woodcutter’s axe and one by one the trees started to fall down. “None of us is going to be safe," screamed one of the beautiful trees. Soon that tree too was brought to ground by the woodcutter’s axe. By now, the woodcutter had come near to the ugly tree. He had just raised his axe when suddenly he noticed how crooked the ugly tree was. “Hmm! This crooked tree seems to be useless for me. I cannot make long straight logs of this ugly tree," he thought. And he moved towards another beautiful tree. The ugly tree heaved a huge sigh of relief. He realized making him ugly; God had actually given him a boon. From that day, the ugly tree never complained. He was happy with his crooked branches. He never forgot how he was spared from the woodcutter’s axe, only because he was crooked and ugly.
