Celebration of Learning
Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to share their
creative projects, performances, research writing, and conceptual
understandings through multiple Celebrations of Learning. Here are
some moments that were captured during these special occasions that
invite family engagement.
Performing Arts Assemblies
Primary School Performing Arts Showcases are original performances, students
devise their own theatre pieces inspired by the central idea of a particular unit of
inquiry.
Each performance consists of choreography sequenced by the students, a short
theatre piece written and created by students, and a song that evokes the themes
within the central idea or lines of inquiry.
Each grade level stages a showcase performance each academic year.
The showcases are a great opportunity for learners to share their creative voice,
ideas and knowledge acquired throughout the unit of inquiry.

We love to read!
We believe reading is the basis for all learning, and the AISL library strives to
promote the love of reading in many ways. Students, staff, and the community
have access to over 24,000 print materials of varied genres and formats. Scheduled
library class times allow for the exploration of books with guidance from the
librarians. Students are encouraged to find a comfy spot and read in solitude or
with friends. Book displays share the vast selection and are promoted with fun
events such as Cultural days ( diversity), Comic Con ( Graphic novels), Star Wars
Day ( Science Fiction) and even a Local Author’s shelf which encourages students
to “publish” their writing. The community is also welcome to celebrate by sharing
photos of students caught reading on our #AISLReads wall. Even Knuffle Bunny
loves to listen to a good story, so join us and keep reading.
Creativity!
The library is not only a place to promote reading, we love to investigate,
create, and collaborate. There are opportunities to explore STEM toys,
create drawings and color murals, build and design with Legos, problem
solve puzzles and Rubik’s cubes. Students sometimes share their
treasures, such as rocks and insects from the natural world, allowing us
to inquire, observe, and research.
THE SEARCH FOR SIGNS OF
INTELLIGENT LIFE ON EARTH
Message from
the Secondary Principal
Dr. Rick Odum
The time has come again, where we pause and take a look back at the year that was. If 2019-2020 was “the
COVID” year, and 2020-2021 was “another, slightly better COVID” year, I think it is fair to say that 2021-2022
has been the “light at the end of the tunnel” year. We may still be in the dark about the future, but we can see
what things may look like on the other side.
Transitions can be difficult, and radical transitions offer particularly difficult adjustments. That is why I am so
proud of how the students, faculty, staff and parents have risen to the occasion this year to pivot from a COVID-
centric model of distance and hybrid learning, towards what may be a preliminary kind of normalcy.
This year saw the return of social events, sports trips, grade mixing at breaks, and of enjoying the glory of the
Zambian outdoors without masks. It is my sincere wish that this trajectory continues and we are able to make
2022-2023 our first “year in the light” with the continued reintroduction of the things that made AISL the
joyous learning environment it has been for years.
2021-2022 has been a year of successes, and I hope that this yearbook serves to remind everyone of the
wonderful memories that characterized this year. Please know it has been an honor to work with the students,
teachers, staff and parents of AISL, and I look forward to 2022-2023.
Sincerely,
Dr. Rick Odum

Duke of Edinburgh
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a prestigious international award
for high school students encouraging civic-mindedness and the
development of outdoor skills. Students who participate in the
Award program complete a practice expedition at their level (Bronze,

I may only be 12 I
may
– by Isla Miller be only
I may be only 12 12
But I am aware Yet some will
Of the world around me say,
And the mistakes it has to bare You are too young,
I may be only 12 Go out and go play
And sometimes I’m confused I may be only 12
The thought in my head But I’m too good to ignore
is being reused Just give me a chance,
I may be only 12 I swear you’ll want more
But don’t overlook me I may be only 12
I open my eyes But I still doubt
But I cannot see But why?
I may be only 12 I don’t know.
And I wonder a lot What’s the worry all about?
Might something be wrong with me? “You are so young, go enjoy life while you
No, it’s just my thought can.”
Or is it? Oh please stop talking,
The world is lively My life has already begun
But I am still I may be only 12
My thoughts are spinning But I have felt
But I do not move The mean lies of people
I catch myself I’ve already dealt,
Do not fall Been pushed to my knees, I have knelt
Get on your feet I may be only 12
You are strong But I am strong
You are 12 I am brave
I may be only 12 And I am where I belong
But I still feel I am only 12.

The Old Man and the Lake
– by Mubanga Chikwanda
An ancient tree stands
By a frozen lake in the black of day, night-time
Like an old man with forgotten dreams
Cold
The ancient tree cries
The Sun hears its call and rises,
Giving warmth
To the ancient tree, frozen lake,
And man
Ice is melted
Cold becomes warm
No longer emptiness
Instead: a heart of happiness
Bringing joy
And hope
To man.
