PRINTING RESULTS

After the uptake measurements have been completed, a results summary screen for the
chosen method will be displayed as shown in Figure 8-20. The results of all the uptakes thus
far performed for this patient will be displayed in graphic form:

The calculated values are indicated by the asterisks(*).

The hours are the actual time intervals rounded to the nearest hour.

The short, solid horizontal lines indicate the minimum and maximum normal values entered
in the protocol (unless 0 and 99 were chosen, which indicates “no” minimum and maximum).

Note: There is a 1 hour time window, before and after the chosen uptake time where the
minimum and maximum value markers will appear on the graph. If the uptake is
measured before or after the window, the result (*) will appear but the minimum and
maximum will not be shown.

Press PRINT [P] to print a report of this Thyroid Uptake study. The information in the report
depends upon the Thyroid Uptake method chosen.

Press F1 [AGAIN] if you realized an error was made in the measurement and want to repeat
the measurement.

CHAPTER 9

THYROID UPTAKE: ONE CAPSULE
METHOD

GENERAL PROCEDURE

The general procedure for performing a TU study via the One Capsule Method is:
• Enter Patient Demographics
• Choose One Capsule Protocol
• Perform Pre-Dose Measurement (if it is in protocol)
• Enter capsule data
• Measure the capsule(s) and room background
• If Pre-Dose Measurement has not been done, it can be measured now
• Administer the capsule(s)
• Enter capsule administration data
• Perform the uptakes at the indicated times. Measure neck and thigh according to the
directions in CHAPTER 8: THYROID UPTAKE: GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions below begin after the protocol is chosen.

PRE-DOSE MEASUREMENT

If the protocol indicates that a Pre-Dose Measurement is to be performed, the measurements
must be made after the protocol is chosen and before the “administered” data is entered. It
can be performed before the capsule data is entered or after the capsule has been
measured.

Reference: CHAPTER 8: THYROID UPTAKE: GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS for performing
Pre-Dose Measurement.

If BSP is pressed from the pre-Dose Measurement screen, you will be returned to the TU
Patient Selection Screen.

Editing or Deleting a Location

Press the appropriate keys (F2 [EDIT] and F3 [DEL]) as shown on Figure 12-5. The system
will prompt for the necessary information.

TRIGGER LEVEL/COUNT TIME

Other parameters that must be set up to perform Wipe Tests are the Trigger Levels and
Count Times.

Trigger Levels are selected for each of the Wipe Areas. If a peak is determined to have a
Count Rate greater than the Trigger Level for the Wipe’s area, it is identified as “HIGH” in the
Wipe Test Report.

Count Times are also selectable for each area. Longer Count Times are recommended for
low activity counting to improve counting statistics.

To set up Trigger Levels and Count Times, from the Wipe and MCA Setup menu, press 5 to
select TRIGGER LEVEL/COUNT TIME. Figure 12-7 will appear.

in dpm, not cpm. This means only peaks for which a Conversion Factor (CF) is entered in
memory will be compared to this trigger level.

Counting Time determines how long the CAPTUS® 600 will count during a Wipe Test.

Input the desired Trigger Level and Counting Time.

Press F4 [OK] when the data is correct. This will store the data for this area in memory. The
Trigger Level / Count Time Area Select Screen (Figure 12-7) will re-appear.

When finished setting the Trigger Levels, press 0 to return to the Wipe and MCA Setup menu
(Figure 12-3).

GENERIC CONVERSION FACTORS

Generic Conversion Factors is the next item that should be set up. Generic CF is used as a
general-purpose measure of activity. It does not correspond to any particular isotope. For this
reason, it should only be used as a check and not as a measure of activity of any particular
isotope.

The Generic CF is multiplied by the cpm measured for a Region of Interest consisting of all
256 channels of the CAPTUS® 600 Pulse Height Analyzer (PHA) after a wipe is measured.
Since Wipe Tests are only performed on the 400 and 1600 keV full-scale range, it is
necessary to set up CFs for these ranges only. A CF should be chosen so that for a wipe that
is equivalent to background, the results for the generic CF don't exceed the Trigger Levels
set up in the previous section.

To set up Generic Conversion Factors, from the Wipe and MCA Setup menu, press 4 to
select GENERIC CONVERSION FACTORS. Figure 12-9 will appear.

WIPE TEST

INTRODUCTION

Before performing Wipe Tests, the Calibration Test must have been performed for the
calendar day. Reference CHAPTER 6: ACCEPTANCE & QUALITY ASSURANCE TESTS for
instructions on performing the Calibration Test.

The room background must be measured in the Well for the 400 keV and 1600 keV scales
once a day.

If you are performing a Well Function (e.g. a lab test), press HOME. Figure 13-1 will appear.

If you are performing a Probe Function (e.g. Thyroid Uptake), press HOME and then press
WELL. Figure 13-1 will appear.

MEASURING BACKGROUND

If the Calibration Test has not been performed in the current calendar day, a message
instructing the user to perform Test will appear on the display. Figure 13-2 will appear
instructing you to perform background. If background has already been measured in the
current calendar day, the Wipe Test Area Select Screen (Figure 13-5) will appear.

The CAPTUS® 600 will proceed to count the background for the counting time selected in
Background Count Time setup. During the count time, the live spectrum will be displayed.
The CAPTUS® 600 will first count on the 400 keV scale and then on the 1600 keV scale. At
any time, you may abort the counting by pressing the F2 [ABORT] key.

When the background measurement is complete, Figure 13-3 will appear as long as the
counting rate has not exceeded the limits set in Background Trigger Level setup. If the
counting rate limits have been exceeded, Figure 13-4 will appear. This indicates that the
background is too high. Check for sources near the detector or contamination on the detector
and count again. If you are sure there are no sources nearby and the detector is not
contaminated, you may have to raise the background trigger level. The ROI used for
Background in comparing against the selected trigger level is the entire spectrum (all 256
channels).

Scale/Cursor Mode
At any time when viewing the Wipe Screen, the system is either in Scale Mode or Cursor
Mode. The S key toggles between these two modes.

The default is Cursor Mode. This means the number to the right of the F4 key determines
how many channels the cursor will jump with each press of the ARROW keys.

In Scale Mode, the ARROW keys increase or decrease the vertical scale. This feature is
useful to magnify an area of the display. The vertical scale will not display less than 100

To identify if the mode is Scale or Cursor, the word “SCALE” appears on the left of the
screen only when in Scale Mode.

Note: The PRINT [P] key is only active in Cursor Mode.

Activity of a Nuclide
The activity in a Region of Interest corresponding to a given nuclide can be obtained by
pressing one of the Pre-Set Nuclide keys (Cr51, Co57, Ga67, Tc99m, In111, I131, I123,
I125, Tl201), a USER key which has had a nuclide assigned to it or the NUCL key. After the
NUCL key is pressed, input the name of the nuclide and press ENTER.

The activity is displayed on the top line.

If no Conversion Factor has been entered for that nuclide, the counting rate cpm (or cps) is
displayed.

If there is a Conversion Factor, dpm or nCi (or Bq) is displayed. If the activity is greater than
the trigger level, “HIGH” is displayed. (except in General Wipe, which has no Trigger Level).

Activity for Generic Conversion Factor
The activity of the entire spectrum calculated using the Generic Conversion Factor for the
chosen range (400 keV or 1600 keV) can be obtained by pressing the CF key.

The activity is displayed on the top line in dpm.
