The Victorian 95: The Pandemic Edition

The 95th edition of the school's yearbook. A special one to showcase Victorians adapting to the global plague.

THE VICTORIAN EDITORIAL BOARD

PRESENTS

THE VICTORIAN 95 PANDEMIC'S EDITION

Preface

2020 has been traumatising for everyone with the advent of

the coronavirus. Covid-19 was declared a pandemic shortly

after being identified. As a proactive measure, governments

decisively enforced the laws for citizens to remain at home.
Consequently, new norms forcefully barged into everyone’s

daily lives. In school, students and teachers adapted to new

school norms ranging from online lessons and co-curricular

activities to organising activities entirely online and virtual

school events.

Though 2020 was the start of it, 2021 was a further casualty

of sorts.

Throughout 2021, the students barely showed up in school

as more than half the school year was conducted online.

This has undoubtedly made it difficult for Victorians to catch

up with their syllabuses, not to mention holding and

participating in annual events such as the Cross Country,

Sports Day and the Vajiravudh x VI annual rugby match.

Thus, in this special issue of The Victorian 95: Pandemic

Edition, an online effort, you will glimpse Victorians

adapting to the new norm, doing their best to continue the

traditions of the 128-year-old institution.

By the end of 2021, with projections having in certain cases

been proved prescient, and negated by rapidly changing

circumstances, let’s hope that this edition will be the only

one of its kind.

PRESIDENT

Dear Victorians,

It is indeed my honour to be invited to pen my message for this edition of The Victorian

Being a Victorian is an experience no other students can have.

We are the only school where the school crest does not bear our motto unlike other schools, and yet

Victoria Institution is easily recognised and it only goes to show how respected this institution is.
Everywhere we go, people want to know..

When you first step into the mighty corridors of our beloved Alma Mater, you are greeted by an

institution that is steeped in traditions like no other. And in the years to come, you will learn how

to appreciate these traditions and be proud of it for the rest of your life.

I first stepped into VI in 1977. At first, it was a bit difficult to understand the rules and regulations

as everything was new to me. But slowly, with the guidance of my seniors and teachers, we all

learned what it was to be a Victorian. Above everything else, we learned to be proud of this

institution.

Over the years, some of these traditions have been misinterpreted and misemployed.

VIOBA has worked with the school administration to correct these misconceptions and any activity

that goes against the traditions of the school. We strive to uphold the institution’s grandeur.

We learned how the other schools looked up to us. We excelled in everything we did.

Whether it was academic, sports or even the uniformed bodies.

I joined the VICC Band and I learned about discipline, music and more importantly how to respect

my seniors. The band was the pride of the school and we were always invited to perform in many

private and government events. We performed in the Palace, Parliament, Stadiums and the

Merdeka Parades. The highlight of our glory was when we won the very first National School

Marching Band competition in 1980.

Each and every Victorian is expected to live up to our Motto of “Being a Scholar, Sportsman and a

Gentleman.”

My fellow Victorians,

When you first come into VI, you would have been seen as coming from a plethora of

backgrounds.
But when you leave the school, you will leave as one – as a Victorian. That would be your race

and your creed. A line in the school song echoes this - Not one race but one in feeling.

Even though, we are affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, as Victorians we must all be resilient to

overcome these difficult times. You may not have had much physical contact with your peers and

teachers this the past year but things will improve and I urge all of you to fully enjoy your

Victorian experience when things have returned to normal.

On behalf of VIOBA, I wish all who are involved in major examinations all the best and may you

all excel in all your present and future endeavours.

BE YET WISER
GLORY! GLORY! VICTORIA

Fellow Victorians,

Firstly, I would like to thank the Victorian Editorial Board for giving me the

opportunity to write a few words in this year’s issue of the school yearbook.

The years 2020 and 2021 had indeed been challenging years. The COVID-19

pandemic and the resulting Movement Control Order (MCO), had closed

down schools, government offices and many sectors of the economy.

Everyone was instructed to stay home, all activities stopped, including the

activities that Victorians do. New norms were introduced; classes including

co-curricular activities were conducted online from home.

This created new challenges to the Editorial Board in their quest to produce

The Victorian. But, as the saying goes, “when the going gets tough, the tough

gets going”. Despite several hiccups along the way, the Editorial Board

persevered on, and today we are delighted to have not one, but two editions of

The Victorian!

And, true to its form, The Victorian continues to capture the school’s goings

on. Amongst the notable events in 2020 are, the retirement of En Kamarul

Azman B. Md Arif, the Principal, in November 2020 and the arrival of his

successor, Cik Nur Elisa Tee Lee Hwa, and the deferment of the 2020 SPM

exams to Feb 2021.

The 2020 and the 2021 editions of The Victorian are even more fantastic!

These editions of The Victorian will see a first of sorts, where for the very

first time, The Victorian will be issued in an electronic version.

Congratulations to the Editorial Board! Once again you have proven that

Victorians will come through even in these trying times of the COVID-19

pandemic.

As Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association, I would like to register my

appreciation to the Committee members of the Parents Teachers Association

and the various parent support groups. The collaboration between the Parents

Teachers Association and the parent support groups continues to help and

support the school in all their endeavours. With this support, I hope that the

students will continue to achieve success year after year.

It is also our hope that all the efforts will bear fruit and that the new

Victorians, match with old Victorians, in all manners and forms.

To the VI community, administrators, teachers, staff, students, parents, old

boys and girls, I would like to thank everyone for all the kind efforts, time and

assistance provided to VI.

PRINCIPAL

Assalamualaikum and greetings to all,

Foremost, I would like to congratulate the Victorian Editorial Board on

the production of the inaugural e-magazine. It is heart warming to see the

evolvement of the magazine from the usual printed version to an online

one, in line with the current development into a digital, borderless world.

The progression of the school magazine is aligned with the efforts of the

Ministry of Education to take the quality of learning to greater heights

through the School Transformation 2025 programme or TS25. The TS25

strives to transform education from various aspects including

administration, learning, school climate and surrounding, to support 21st

century education. Education shapes the character, merit and expectation

of a student and has no perimeter to restrict. To that effect, the kaizen

way should be embraced. Continuous improvement with positive changes

in salubrious circumstances, in the midst of a city and an environment

that is highly conducive to teaching and learning, facilitate every

Victorian to be the best at what they pursue.

Working closely together with stakeholders, it is my hope that continuous

improvement is fostered to create holistically able students by way of

leadership, empowered teachers, dedicated parent-teacher association, the

Board of Governors, VIOBA and the local community. With a conducive

environment, it is my hope that we nurture ‘Scholars, Sportsmen and

Gentlemen’ as well as fine young ladies of the 6th form, churning out the

best from the domains of cognitive, physical, social, aesthetics and moral

attributes.

On a final note, I would like to congratulate all Victorians and teaching

staff for coming through successfully albeit extraordinary circumstances.

The pandemic certainly is a paradigm shift of sorts but through

synchronous and asynchronous teaching and learning and addressing

digital divides, lessons progressed successfully. We rise above the

challenges. The saying goes – ‘Knowledge is power : We empower with

wisdom’.

May the Victorians always shine

Thank you.

SCHOOL CAPTAIN

BISMILLAHIRAHMANIRAHIM,

All praise is to the almighty Allah for giving me the opportunity to provide

service for this 128 year old school and my utmost gratitude goes to the

members of our proud institution including the principal, school

administrators, teachers and my fellow Victorians.

This Alma Mater has witnessed many historical events in the days before us.

Even the foundation of the school building is structured in such a way that it

conceals secret meanings. From a bird's-eye view, the edifice was created

and aligned to form the letter "E," which stands for education, elites, excel,

and eminence.

I never imagined that the greatest doers of our nation had studied under the

same roof as me in Victoria Institution for the past five years. I've been

granted the outlet to learn and explore a plethora of unique cultures and

traditions, all of which have helped in my journey of growth and self-

discovery. Within these walls, I learnt the most important lessons,

experienced my most difficult obstacles, and formed lifelong memories and

friendships. Of all the challenges, COVID-19, which caused school closures

and disrupted our secondary school experience, has been the most difficult

in the last two years. This was not, however, an excuse to disregard our

schooling. The pandemic had given me the opportunity to reflect and, as a

result, had established in me a more mature perspective.

To the juniors, make the most of your time in VI by studying hard, making

mistakes and learning from it. Under the guidance of our experienced and

dedicated teachers as well as your fellow Victorians, VI is where you will

hone your skills, learn about leadership and teamwork, and develop your

personalities in line with becoming the best of scholars, sportsmen, and

gentlemen. Here’s hoping for the continuity of Victoria Institution along

with all its history and glory.

CIRCUMSTANCES CHANGE, THE BLUES REMAIN

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Fellow Victorians,

With great pride, we present to you the 95th edition of The Victorian!

Through this annual gem, we hope to reignite the spirit in every Victorian

under this extraordinarily endearing circumstance. I believe it is

exceptionally crucial to have this year's issue as it marks the second year

of the pandemic, allowing us to showcase how current Victorians calmly

adapt to the new norm. Furthermore, this issue is undoubtedly a priceless

token for those leaving. It would put a smile on my face to know that this

will remind my friends of the memorable days they had sustained in this

glorious institution.

As one could imagine, it has been a long journey for our team to produce

the e-yearbook. Personally, this journey has earned me knowledge and

skills I could never expect to learn elsewhere. For instance, it was an

amazing experience to work out the issue from scratch by only referring
to the previous ones and yearbooks from other schools. Besides, we also

started to get active on a widely known social media platform, Instagram.

The intention behind this addition was to keep up with the constantly

improving technology, allowing us to update people on the ongoings in

the school. Handling these, undoubtedly brought us through many

obstacles and hardships that made me realise the little details to pay

attention to and the importance of consistent self-discipline. Ironically, I

must admit that these obstructions are what shaped us into who we are,

and are primarily the foundation of one’s growth, especially for us, who

deem ourselves proud Victorians.

Ultimately, I would like to extend my gratitude to the teachers who had

entrusted me with this responsibility. Not forgetting my comrades from

the board in making this yearbook come true, and also everyone out there

who taught me throughout my journey as the editor, may they be

intentional or not. Thank you very much.

May the New Victorians match with Old Victorians

“Life is not measured by the breaths we take,

but by the moments that take our breath away.”

This line perfectly describes the 95th edition of The Victorians.

2020 has not been a perfect year as it was the year when the

COVID-19 outbreak was declared a pandemic and many people

were forced to experience things like lockdown, social distancing,

and quarantine. This made schooling a cumbersome process to

deal with. As the fog of confusion lifted, students and teachers

learned to overcome this unprecedented situation by consolidating

all their strengths. Amidst all these uncertainties, we, the editorial

team had to grapple with seemingly impossible choices in order to

bring this e-magazine to fruition.

With the turn, or scroll, of every page of this magazine, I see that

the journey to the future needs a glimpse of the past. Together as

we embark on yet another fruitful academic year, the rooting of

our core values; hard work, commitment, compassion,

and empathy will further allow us to push the boundaries of what

we thought was impossible. Despite the outbreak, the indomitable

dedication of the students to learn, explore, and to draw concrete

conclusions on their own has yielded in their spectacular growth,

not just as students but also as future leaders. We compile this

edition of the magazine for you to luxuriate in. It is with joy that

we share the very achievements and contributions of the students

in various domains. The sincere buttress provided by teachers

cannot be undervalued.

I know we are saying goodbye, but we will carry a piece of each

other into everything that we do next. To remind us of who we are

and who we are meant to be. So don't waste your life living

someone else's, make yours count. Fight for what matters to you,

no matter what. Happy reading and keep looking up.

OMAR ABDULLAH

TOP SCORER FOR THE SPM OF 2020

“My name is Omar Abdullah bin Abdul Azeem and I was a student of VI for 5 years

from form 1 (2016) to form 5 (2020). I was involved in various activities related to

STEM projects and served the school as a prefect while I was studying there.”

QUESTION & ANSWER

Q How did you feel when you received your results?

A At first I was in disbelief and was not sure if those were really my results.

After waking up to reality I was filled with utmost joy and relief knowing

that I successfully lived up to or even surpassed my expectations.

Q How did you prepare for your SPM/ STPM examinations

and balanced leisure with studies?

A The most important part of studying for me was consistency. I found it far more

effective to study a little everyday but on a consistent basis rather than binge

study in one go. In all honesty, my days consisted of a higher percentage of

leisure than studies so I didn't quite balance it well but when push came to

shove such as at those last crucial moments, I was willing to sacrifice all those

unecessary forms of entertainment for the sake of achieving my desired results.

20

Q To whom do you owe your success to?
A
I owe my success to my parents, teachers and friends along with
external tutors who all helped guide me with my studies and give

valuable tips to ace exams.

Q Is there any event that made a huge change to your life?

If yes, what is it?

A There is no major event I can recall that made a huge impact to my life but its

more so those little lessons that I learn from minor events that occured

throughout the years that helped shape me into the person I am today and I am

eternally grateful to possess that accumulation of experiences.

Q What are your goals henceforth?

A In terms of my career, my goal is to become a fully fledged actuarist and complete at

least 10 professional exams by the time I am 30 years old. I would also like to work on

some self development improvements and sharpen my soft skills. Additionally, I am

also trying to pick up a few new languages to weaken the barrier of communication

that exists between humans of different rural backgrounds. On a side note, I am

working towards creating multiple income streams in the next few years with hopes

of surpassing 5 by the age of 30.

21

FATIHATUL

TOP SCORER FOR THE STPM OF 2020

“Assalamualaikum wrbt. First of all I would like to thank the Victorian Editorial
Board (VEB) for the opportunity to write a few words about my journey as an STPM
students of batch 2019/2020. Throughout my studies at Victoria institution i have
been involved in an array of programs held by Pusat Tingkatan Enam (PTE) such as

Kem Anugerah Remaja Perdana and Victoria Institution Pre-University Games
(VIPUG) as well as holding the position of VEB Secretary".

QUESTION & ANSWER

Q How did you prepare for your STPM examinations?

A Personally, the most important thing is our mental and physical health.
So I made sure that I got enough rest and sleep to prevent any health
problems throughout my studies. As for study methods, I focus on topics
that I’m mostly weak at and do short notes to understand it better.

Q How do you feel about your choice to do STPM over other
high level studies?

A My first impression about STPM was not as good as other high level studies, but
when I first entered VI, I knew that all of my expectations were totally wrong. And
the fact that I managed to get excellent results for my STPM proves that STPM is not
what the majority of us think it is.

22

Q To whom do you owe your success to?
A
I would say my family, all of my teachers and my friends. They are my
number one support system. They are the ones who helped and supported
me when I was at my lowest. And because of them and Allah’s will I
managed to obtain excellent results for my STPM since the first semester

Q What is your advice to all STPM candidates?

A You can read or ask for many tips on how to ace in STPM, but it’s useless if you,
yourself don’t have determination to do so. And please remember “whoever
strives shall succeed” and ”Usaha tidak mengkhianati hasil”. Keep striving even if
you keep failing because winners aren’t who never fail but people who never quit!

Q What are your goals henceforth?

A Since I will be furthering my studies, I really hope to gain more knowledge and
experience to improve my skills and become a better version of myself. Not only that
I am also really looking forward to developing a clearer picture of where I see myself
in the next few years.

23

TING HUEY

TOP SCORER FOR THE STPM OF 2020

Q QUESTION & ANSWER
A
How did you prepare for your STPM examinations?

I did a lot of past year questions, especially when it was near the exam. I
also printed almost all of the trial questions that I gathered including the
past year trial questions and scan through it very quickly to make sure
that my answer is the same as the answer provided.

Q To whom do you owe your success to?

A Teachers including both school and tuition teachers. Also my parents that
supported me a lot throughout my study journey.

24

Q How do you feel about your choice to do STPM over other high level
A studies?

It's one of the best choices that I have ever made. Because of that,
I'm able to study at the top university in Malaysia which is
University of Malaya.

Q What is your advice to all STPM candidates?

A STPM is really different from SPM. Some people say that students choose to pursue
STPM because they have bad grades during SPM but it's not true. I got 9As in my
SPM but still I took STPM because I knew that if I excel in it, I can get into a public
university that has a high ranking in Asia. So don’t listen to those discouraging
words, as long as you know what you are doing, focus on it and do your very best.

Q What are your goals henceforth?

A Maintain good grades but at the same time learn all sorts of things as there are
a lot of opportunities that I can get in the university.

25

TASIGEN

TOP SCORER FOR THE STPM OF 2020

QUESTION & ANSWER

Q How did you prepare for your STPM examinations?

One of the best ways to prepare for the examination is to complete the questions
from the past year papers as early as possible for STPM. Basically, do not wait for the
end of the entire syllabus to do the past year paper instead use them to review each
chapter as you go along the way.

A Secondly, master each chapter by practicing all the questions in your reference
book, be it example questions with solutions or even checkpoint questions and the
questions at the end of the book.. With a good foundation then only, you will be able
to tackle any question that might be thrown at you or tested in the examination. To
add on, attempt all the trial papers from other schools, it not only helps to improve
your background but familiarises you with the exams.

Thirdly, always try to have a cheat day where you don’t study at all. It's good to keep
the productivity and also ensure you don’t overheat like an overused phone from
stress. For instance, in a span of a month give yourself two or three cheat days.
Friendly reminder, don’t overdo the cheat day .

Finally, always talk with your teachers when you have any problems be it a subject
related question or handling the stress.

26

Q To whom do you owe your success to?

A There are many people I do owe my success to. Most importantly my father, he
doesn’t pressure me on my academic life honestly. He keeps my targets low but
still never fails to provide me the most quality education. He purchases most of
the reference books that I’ve requested for and modules from online retailers.
Next, of course I have to owe my success to my teachers especially Ms. Mary and
Pn. Jayaselvi who not only supported academically but also emotionally. Also, my
subject teachers who have taught me all this while, truly provided me all the
essential resources and lectures.

Q What is your advice to all STPM candidates?

A It's important to keep focus because 1.5 years sure flies fast and one semester ends
and another begins in a blink. Don’t take time for granted! and try your best not to
repeat to many subjects although it might seem like blessing that we can repeat
papers but it can be a daunting task since you might not only need to retake your
papers but also sit for your sem 3 papers which doesn’t have repeat papers so please
choose the subjects you want to repeat wisely. I would advise you to repeat only 3
papers at best if you want to have a great improvement on your grades.

Q What are your goals henceforth?

A Well as of now, I have enrolled in Multimedia University Cyberjaya Campus for
Computer Engineering. My short-term goal is to finish my bachelors ,gain work
experience and earn an IR Engineer title while my long term goal is to become a
prolific professor like Sir Richard Feynman.

NURSHAHIRAH

TOP SCORER FOR THE STPM OF 2020

Assalamualaikum and warm greetings everyone. My name is Siti NurShahirah binti Mohamad
Fouzi. I am 20 years old and currently studying at University of Malaya in Bachelor Degree of
Economics. First of all, I would like to thank the Editorial Board for giving me the opportunity to be
interviewed. While still studying at Victoria Institution I was not involved as a high committee

member in big organisations such as Persatuan Tingkatan 6 (PTE). However, when these
organisations needed help with activities in school, I volunteered to assist them. Taking part in

small roles in order to make every activity go smoothly was my pleasure.

QUESTION & ANSWER

Q How did you prepare for your STPM examinations?

A I prepared for my STPM examinations by writing notes for every subject. I find that
this method helps me to recall everything that I have learned. I always do past year
questions to be more familiar with the pattern of STPM questions. When the
examination is around the corner, I will wake up early in the morning around 4am to
do revision. On the examination days I read the notes, but I prefer to stay away from
people to avoid feeling panic.

Q To whom do you owe your success to?

A I owe my success to every single person in my life. Most importantly, my parents,
teachers and friends. I would like to thank them because they encouraged me to
do better in my studies. My mother has always given me moral support. My class
teacher always pushes me to do my best. My friends have always been my best
study mates.

Q How do you feel about your choice to do STPM over other high level studies?

A I felt scared to do it at first because I thought it was hard like what people
said. I believe nothing is easy in life but in the end, the struggles are worth
it. The experiences I got during STPM were valuable and impossible to find
anywhere. I am happy thatI chose STPM over other high level studies.

Q What is your advice to all STPM candidates?

A My advice to all STPM candidates is keeping positive no matter what. It is normal
to feel unmotivated and stressed because we tend to overthink things. Prioritize
your health, especially mental health. This is because mental health plays an
important role in ensuring you have a healthy mind. Stable mental health helps
you focus in class and also helps you to plan your goals to succeed in your study
wisely. Lastly, remember it is fine to take a rest, but never stop hustling.

Q What are your goals henceforth?

A My main goal right now is doing the very best for my degree. I want to
balance my studies and social life. I want to explore more in university. For
instance, updating one’s knowledge and broadening my network through
volunteering. Finally, making my parents proud with my achievements after
all that they have sacrificed for me.

QUESTION & ANSWER

Q How did you prepare for your STPM examinations?

A Preparing for STPM was a continuous process for me as I always try to study bits
and parts of a topic every night. I would usually study at least one subject a day, be
it a small topic which I was confused in class or a whole chapter if the need arises.
So, my advice is to always consistently study to prevent last-minute panic attacks
before your exams.

Q To whom do you owe your success to?

A I owe my success to my family, teachers and friends. These 3 groups of different
individuals played a significant part in how I managed to be as successful as I am
right now. My family, in giving me endless support when I needed it, my teachers, in
guiding me throughout my STPM journey in Victoria Institution, and lastly my friends
that always understood my passion for triumph in STPM. But I also owe my success
to myself of course as I didn’t want to let myself down by believing that ‘it is enough’
and always sought for higher opportunities.

32

Q How do you feel about your choice to do STPM over other high-level studies?
A

I was never fond of the idea about me going for STPM although my choice for
law school was always University Malaya. Despite that, I had to muster up the
courage to prove myself that I am capable of trying new things that were never
once considered to be in the plan. Nevertheless, taking STPM made me realize
that it was similar to A-levels and is on par (if not higher and tougher) with other
pre-university courses.

Q What is your advice to all STPM candidates?

A Never give up and keep on going forward. Never ever be content with what you
have and strive to achieve the best out of the best. With that said, also bear in
mind to be active in your co-curriculum and social life too. It’s all about managing
your time well and studying smart, not studying hard. With that, I believe anyone
can reach for the stars and shine brightly with your own style.

Q What are your goals henceforth?

A Surviving my degree life jkjk. My goal is to practice law in the future
and to fight injustice that occurs in our society. But my goals may shift
as time flows.
