BAB I

PEMBAHASAN MATERI

There are three kinds of text will be discussed in this part: Genre Text, Transactional
Text and Short Functional Text

A. GENRE TEXT

1. RECOUNT TEXT

Recount text is a text that telling the reader about one story, action or activity. Its
communicative purpose is to entertain or informing the reader about the past events.

Generic Structure of Recount Text

such as who was involved, where it happened, and when it happened.
# Events : A series of events, ordered in a chronological sequence.
# Re-orientation :A personal comment about the event or what happened in the end.

The Characteristics / Language Feature of Recount Text:
– Using the simple past tense, past continuous tense, past perfect tense, and past perfect
continuous tense.
– Using temporal sequence, e.g. On Saturday. On Monday, On Sunday
– Focus on specific participant, e.g. I (the writer)
– Using the conjunctions, such as: then, before, after, etc.
– Using action verd, e.g. went, stayed

Example of Recount Text

Read text carefully

Being Late

Last morning, Dinar, my roommate woke up late and she had to go to campus.

When she wanted to take her motorcycle, in fact she couldn’t move it because there were
some motorcycles that blocked up her motorcycle.

She tried to move all of the motorcycles, so that her motorcycle could move from the garage.
But she couldn’t do it.

Then, she called Adel who had that motorcycle which blocked it up. After that, her friend
who had that motorcycle helped her. Finally, she could move her motorcycle and rode it to
go to campus.

2. DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to
describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

So, it can be said that this descriptive text is a text that explains about whether a person or an
object is like, whether its form, its properties, its amount and others. The purpose of the
descriptive text is clear, that is to describe, represent or reveal a person or an object, either
abstract or concrete.

1

Generic Structure of Descriptive Text

# Identification: (contains about the introduction of a person, place, animal or object will be
described.)
# Description: contains a description of something such as animal, things, place or person by
decribing its features, forms, colors, or anything related to what the writer describe.

Purpose of Descriptive text

– To describe person, thing or place in specific
– To describe a particular person, thing or place.

Language Feature of Descriptive Text

– Specific participant : has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one). for
example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Jim
– The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful beach, a
handsome man, the famous place in jepara, etc.
– The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present because it tells
the fact of the object described.
– Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep, walk, cut etc….

Example of Descriptive Text – My Favorite Teacher

My favorite teacher is my history teacher, and he is by far the best teacher that I have
ever had. He has the ability to make a subject that many students find incredibly boring come
to life through his enthusiasm and passion for history, and his love of being a teacher. Going
to his lessons is something we look forward to, not dread, like we do with most other lessons.

It’s ever so funny to watch him get excited about something, which happens in every
lesson. It’s easy to know that he’s getting excited because he begins bouncing up and down
slightly in a way that no other sixty-something year old would ever managed without looking
completely ridiculous. He has this dark (with more and more grey streaks these days),
springy hair that lines the edge of his growing bald patch, and the hair bounces up and down
with him like thousands of tiny little springs. Then, he takes on his whole new persona, often
going into role and becoming the character or figure he is talking about, doing the voices, the
actions, and parading up and down the room gesticulating wildly, but all the while there’s a
gentle ‘bounce, bounce, bounce’, as though the springs are not just on his head but on the
soles of his shoes too.

A teacher that doesn’t take himself too seriously always will be a big hit with
teenagers, although he’s not afraid to impose his authority if he has to. I’ve only ever heard
him properly shout once (although thankfully it wasn’t it me), but it isn’t an experience that I
would like to repeat. When he lost it, the room suddenly became more silent than I’d ever
known it to be before. We all sat slightly paralyzed, not even anting to breathe too loudly,
because hearing such a jovial and jolly little man lose his temper was a huge shock. It
certainly had the right kind of impact though, because he’s never needed to shout since.

It is actually this teacher that I have to thank for my love of history. In his lessons, history
does not mean copying out of textbooks and writing pages and pages of notes. History is
alive; history is something tangible, that you can see, hear and feel, and we can live it
through dressing up and acting out scenes or taking trips to important places of historical
interest. And although he’s getting on in years and may not be teaching for much longer, he
will have an important place in history for many of his students, because there has never been
a teacher able to bring a subject to life in quite the same way he does.

Never Try Smoking

A lot of people, especially teenagers, who do not smoke, always want to try smoking.
They know it is bad for them and all, but it is just something they want to try. So they ask one
of their smoker friends for a cigarette. Admittedly, they firstly can not light it on their own so
they ask his friend to do it. Then they inhale that cigarette and smoke occasionally.

Apparently that makes them the born smokers. Now they do smoke fairly regularly.
They can not avoid smoking and they enjoy too. They have smoker friends. Everyday they
bring a pack in their pocket. For them, a pack of cigarette is as important as a wallet for their
money.

Suddenly, for certain reason, they realize the fact that tobacco is the cause of a long
list of nasty diseases. It is not only heart disease, stroke, and chronic lung disease but also
bladder, lung, and pancreatic cancer. Even it was reported that around 400,000 Americans
died each year. It was one every 80 seconds from tobacco-related illnesses.

Then they decide it is stupid to harm selves. They want to quit smoking.
Unfortunately, they find that quitting smoking is so difficult. “Why can’t I stop smoking? I
really want to stop it”. It is hard to quit because nicotine is powerfully addictive. Cigarette is
one of the most efficient drug-delivery devices ever devised. As result, when people try to
quit smoking, they often experience classic nicotine withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety,
irritability, headache, depression, and restlessness.
Well, still want to try smoke? Think the facts before trying! If you are not smoker, you
should never and never try to smoke.

How does Rain Happen?

Rain is the primary source of fresh water for most areas of the world, providing
suitable conditions for diverse ecosystems, as well as water for hydroelectric power plants
and crop irrigation.

The phenomenon of rain is actually a water circle. The concept of the water cycle
involves the sun heating the Earth’s surface water and causing the surface water to evaporate.
The water vapor rises into the Earth’s atmosphere. The water in the atmosphere cools and
condenses into liquid droplets. The droplets grow until they are heavy and fall to the earth as
precipitation which can be in the form of rain or snow.

However, not all rain reaches the surface. Some evaporates while falling through dry
air. This is called virga, a phenomenon which is often seen in hot, dry desert regions

Examples of Discussion text

Nuclear Energy : Advantage Or Disadvantage

Nuclear energy is commonly offered as an alternative to overcome the crisis of
energy. The debate whether the use of nuclear energy is an appropriate choice or not, has not

7

come to an end. Some people agree with the utilization of it because of its benefits. Some
others, however, disagree because of its risks to the environment.

Those who agree with the operation of nuclear reactors usually argue that nuclear
energy is the only feasible choice to answer the ever – increasing energy needs. In their
opinion, the other sources of energy: oil, coal, and liquid natural gas are not renewable and
safe, while nuclear energy can be sustainable when produced in a safe way.

However, people who disagree with the use of nuclear energy point out that the waste
of nuclear products can completely destroy the environment and human lives. A meltdown in
reactor, for example, usually results in the contamination of the surroundings soil and water.
Take for example, the blow up of the nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station
in Russia twenty years ago. The serious contamination imperiled people and the environment
severely.

It is obvious that nuclear energy should be avoided because it really endangers the
environment but what about a less polluted energy instead of nuclear energy. Is there any
alternative energy to overcome the crisis of energy? In my opinion, nuclear energy is the best
choice to overcome the crisis of energy. However, government should make sure that nuclear
reactor’s construction and maintains are safe.

Example of Review Text

Example of Review Text about Novel

Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix

I absolutely love the Harry Potter series, and all of the books will always hold a special place
in my heart.

I have to say that of all the books, however, this one was not my favorite.

8

When the series began it was as much of a “feel good” experience as a huge mug of hot
cocoa. The stories were bright, fast-paced, intriguing, and ultimately satisfying.

Order of the Phoenix is a different kind of book. In some instances this works you feel a
whole new level of intensity and excitement by the time you get to the end. I was truly
moved by the last page. Other times the book just has a slightly dreary, depressing feel. The
galloping pace of the other books has slowed to a trot here, and parts of it do seem long, as if
we’re reading all about Harry “just hanging out” instead of having his usual adventures.
Reading in detail about Harry cleaning up an old house, for example – housekeeping is still
housekeeping, magical or no, and I’m not very interested in doing it or reading about other
people doing it.

A few other changes in this book – the “real” world comes much more in to play rather than
the fantasy universe of the previous books, and Harry has apparently been taken off his meds.
I know that he had a lot to be grumpy in this book, especially with being a teenager and all,
but the sudden change in his character seemed too drastic. He goes from being a warm-
hearted, considerate person to someone who will bite his best friend’s heads off over nothing.
It just seemed like it didn’t fit with his character, like he turned into a walking cliché of the
“angry teen” overnight. The “real” story seemed to happen in the last 1/3 of the book, and
this part I loved. I actually liked the ending (and yes, I cried!) as sad as it was. It packed a
punch and it made me care about the story even more. Still a really good book, with some
editing it would have been great.

Example of Review Text about Song

“Baby” Justin Bieber

“BABY” represents more of the same from Justin Bieber. It’s a squeaky-clean song that finds
the singer once again pouring his heart out to a girl he likes. Though his crush breaks his
heart in the end. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” seems to be Justin Bieber’s motto, since most
of his songs — including “Baby” — sound very similar. Here, Bieber falls back on the heavy
synth-presence and formulaic pop beats that characterize his entire last album. Though his
vocals and I-want-to-be-sweet-to-you approach are still somewhat endearing, the pattern is
starting to wear thin. The most interesting part of the song is the Ludacris verse.

Did you know Justin says “Baby” exactly 55 times in the song. The lyrics aren’t the most
clever we’ve ever heard, weI’ve heard worse, but it just repeats “Bay-be, bay-be, bay-be ohh”
Not the best hit in my standers, but some like it, and thats perfectly fine.

10. NARRATIVE TEXT

A narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain people.

Purpose of Narrative Text

Narrative text is to entertain and educate people with the moral value.

Generic Structure of Narrative Text
# Orientation : It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are
introduced. It tells the readers about the answers of the questions who, where and when.
# Complication : Where the problems in the story developed.
# Resolution : Where the problems in the story is solved. Masalah selesai, secara baik “happy
ending” ataupun buruk “bad/sad ending”.
# Coda / reorientation (optional) – lesson from the story

The Characteristics / Language Feature of Narrative Text:
– Past tense (killed, drunk, etc)

9

– Adverb of time (Once upun a time, one day, etc)
– Time conjunction (when, then, suddenly, etc)
– Specific character. The character of the story is specific, not general. (Cinderella, Snow
White, Alibaba, etc)
– Action verbs. A verb that shows an action. (killed, dug, walked, etc)
– Direct speech. It is to make the story lively. (Snow White said,”My name is Snow White).
The direct speech uses present tense.

Example of Narrative Text (Legend)

Manik Angkeran (The Origin of Bali Strait)

In Daha kingdom there lived a powerful Brahmin named Sidi Mantra. Her son’s name was
Manik Angkeran. Manik Angkeran liked to gamble. One day, Manik Angkeran could not pay
the debt. He asked help to father.
Loving his son, Sidi Mantra fasted then prayed to the God. A mysterious voice asked him to
meet Naga Besukih at Agung Mount. By ringing a genta, Naga Besukih came and gave gold
as well as diamonds from his scales. Soon, Manik Angkeran finished all gold and diamonds.
He asked help to his father again. Sidi Mantra came to Naga Besukih. This time, Manik
Angkeran secretly followed Sidi Mantra.

A few days later, Manik Angkeran stole father’s genta then came to Naga Besukih. Manik
Angkeran got gold and diamonds. But he was not satisfied. Manik Angkeran saw a big gem
at the end of dragon’s tail. When Naga Besukih turned toward a cave, Manik Angkeran
immediately cut off dragon’s tail then ran away.

Naga Besukih was furious then licked Manik Angkeran’s footprints. Then he turned into
ashes. Sidi Matra was aware of this situation; he begged Naga Besukih to revive his son.
Naga Besukih agreed if his tail was back. With magic, Sidi Mantra returned dragon’s tail
back to normal. Then, Naga Besukih revived Manik Angkeran.

Sidi Mantra knew that he could not live with Manik Angkeran anymore. With a magical
wand, Sidi Mantra made a line that separated him from son. There came springs growing into
a sea. This is the legend of Bali Strait separating Java from Bali.

a. Intro
The introduction establishes melodic, harmonic, and/or rhythmic related to the main body of
song.

b. Verse
It is the section of the song structure that tells the story. This is the exposition, describing the
scene or the person, or an emotion. There are usually two or three verses in a row that have
the same musical structure, the same rhyme and poetic meter, but different words. The
second verse builds on the picture painted in the first verse, etc.

c. Chorus of Refrain
A chorus is the most repeated section, so it’s the easiest remembered. A chorus is the
summary of the song’s story. All the verses have been leading up to the chorus, and is usually
the part of the song people sing along with. A chorus can come at the beginning of the song
structure; it can also start in the middle, or come at the end. In fact, some songs don’t have
choruses at all. Some people are usually confused to differentiate between choruses and

refrain. A refrain is any line that repeats in the song lyric, while a chorus is any group of lines
that repeat.

d. Break
A break is actually a brief “rest” or “pause” for the core melody within a song used to add
further dimension and excitement. It may include a quick instrumental solo or drum interlude
or it may be a brief moment of silence, or acombination of each of these elements.

e. Bridge
This is the part of the song that shifts. It can suddenly change tempo, or volume, or
instrumentation. The bridge is the section that gives the audience time to reflect on the story,
or gives them the “climax” or conclusion of the story through verses and chorus. Bridges can
be used to give the singer a break.

f. Outro or Coda
This is the end of the road for the song. It can repeat the intro, chorus or a refrain as an outro,
or a bridge with an instrumental solo.

PREPARED FOR THE WORST
Just outside Yokohama stadium, several hundred policemen stare down the cord. "Quite down",
booms a voice, in English, Spanish, and Japanese, over the loudspeaker. "Disperse immediately".
Some 50 screaming "hooligans", faces painted and armed with burning wooden sticks, throw
chairs back at the front line. Firecrackers explode all around. An electric billboard flickers the
same warning. The rioters grow only more threatening. Suddenly water cannons appear, and
within minutes the last persistent "thug" is knocked to the ground. Another Japanese dress
rehearsal for World Cup 2002 has ended in success− and without casualties.
As Asia opens its aims to the world's best teams and nearly 1 million of their supporters is
keeping
another set of arms firmly braced to combat hooliganism. Fearing a repeat of Marseilles 1998,
where
nearly 50 were arrested and 30 injured in clashes between England and Tunisia supporters, Japan,
and
South Korea have taken every precaution. But while South Korea has decades of experience in
quelling aggressive demonstrations troubles, Japan was the unlucky winner chosen to host
England, the teams most infamous for its hooligans.
So far, the crash course has gone well. Since 1998 Japanese officials have toured Europe and
South
America, consulting top football authorities to learn how to fight the game's main malady and to
train in the art of "spotting" locating potential troublemakers in a crowd of football supporters.
And the best in the world are lending a hand; about 100 of the world's top spotters from 4
different countries are expected to attend World Cup 2002 to assist local authorities.

At 55 I have just gone to Bali for the first time with my husband. We stayed in Seminyak and had
a wonderful time. We took Jetstar in economy over and were in 2nd last row and even then by
time off plane purchasing VOA and Immigration took about 1 hour - wasn't too bad. Departing
last night, Jetstar was late by one hour but we had paid to go Business class so it was not that bad.
We sat in Premier Lounge - not a great selection of food or wine (wine is my thing) but it was
enjoyable anyway. Of course, new airport is underway and things may be different once that is up
and running. We didn't get sick or robbed or bitten. Yes, footpaths are broken and or missing and
some smells but that didn't 16deter us. People were friendly and so polite. The weather was just
fantastic. When asked to take what looked like post cards we politely said "no thank you " and
that was the last of it. Bintang beer mostly $2.50 very cheap and was the food and we ate in good
restaurants - La Lucciola, Breeze, Sardine, Sarong and Metis. As we had breakfast supplied at
The Samaya we didn't need lunch and we were given fruit salad by the pool and afternoon tea so
only dinner was required. We enjoyed Sarong in particular. We used hand sanitizer and luckily
for us we didn't get the dreaded dire - rear. A driver took us to Ubud and Jimbaran Bay and
through Kuta. Mostly this was a relaxing one week there. Manicures, pedicures, hair, massage
were so cheap - roughly $8 - we had these done at Body Works in Seminyak. I also had Wendy
the dressmaker come to our hotel and made me skirts which I was very happy with. This morning
in Sydney airport, it took us just 30 minutes to be off the plane and into a taxi. Jetstar made up
time flying home - only 5 hours and 10 minutes. It was all a breeze. Bali had never been on my to
do list, but I will be going back that is for sure.

Why Eiffel Tower was Built

If we talk about the Wonders of the World buildings, then we will see Eiffel Tower as one of
them. However many of us do not know the tower’s past history on why it was buil[t]. Everything
has the reasonable background, especially for the tower which is to be one of the most recognized
buildings in the world.
Primarily, the Eiffel Tower was built for the World Exhibition. It was called Paris Exposition in

1889. The exhibition was organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.
The purpose of building Eiffel Tower in such structure was to show to the world France’s
advancement of technology and beauty. The Eiffel Tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel. It
seemed that then the name of the tower was derived from the designer’s last name, “Eiffel”

Another reason on why the tower was built was for scientific progress. Although few realized it,
the Eiffel Tower would become the prominent structure in terms of science and technology.
Many experiment with temperature, pressure and pendulums were performed atop the unique
famous building. Additionally the Eiffel Tower was used for radio transmission tower. Many

Be Mindful of The World around You

Be aware of your impact on the world around you and the fact that you are connected with the
world around you. Everything we do to world around us, whether destructive or creative, will
eventually be reflected in that world.

And especially be wary of contaminating the planet, destroying natural habitat or attempting to
alter the natural cycles of nature. The best way to avoid natural disasters is to learn to live in
greater harmony with the nature world, respecting its natural cycles of "destruction" which are
actually crucial to life on Earth

As one more quick example, consider large hydroelectric dams and the issue of flooding.
Arrogant scientists and engineers promised that such dams would end floods downstream,
produce clean energy and lead to a healthier world. They were wrong: By stopping the floods,
dams directly interfere with the normal life cycle of virtually all the animals that live downstream.
And by halting flooding, they deny the croplands on the banks of the rivers the nutritional
replenishment they need to grow healthful, mineral-rich crops.
Much the same is true with forest fires. Humans desperately and ignorantly attempt to extinguish
such fires, thereby preserving the forest floor "fuel" that one day ignites into a much stronger
blaze that, instead of invigorating the forest, kills it dead. Just look at the history of Yellowstone
National Park. It was all the decades of extinguishing fires there that led to the devastating, tree-
killing fire of 1988

Human arrogance at work yet again, thinking that every time a fire or flood occurs, it's a "natural
disaster" that must be halted through human intervention

The upshot is that many "natural disasters" are really only disasters from the point of view of
people who don't respect nature in the first place.

Golf in the United States is a $76 billion annual industry with 25.7 million players. Thirty-eight
percent of Americans call themselves golf fans. The debate over whether or not golf is a sport
wages on the internet, in bars, amongst sportswriters, and even on the golf course.

Proponents say that golf meets the definition of "sport" found in the dictionary, requires physical
exertion and coordination, and is recognized as a sport by sporting goods companies, athletic
associations, fans, the media, and more. They point to golf's inclusion in the Olympics starting in
2016 as further evidence of its qualification as a sport.
Opponents say that golf better meets the definition of "game" than "sport," does not require
rigorous physical activity, and can be played professionally by people who are overweight,
injured, or non-athletic. They argue that golf is a game or leisure activity, and they cite golf's 112-

the Earth now as there was when the Earth began. The water cycle is how the earth's water recycles
itself.

The cycle includes precipitation, evaporation, condensation, and transpiration. Earth's water
keeps changing from liquid water to vapour and then back again. This cycle happens because of the
sun's heat and gravity.

First of all, water molecules from lakes, rivers, streams, reservoirs, and the sea get heated up
by the sun and then turn into vapour that rises into the air. Next, these water molecules form into
clouds, this is because a process called condensation occurs. When the air and the water cool, they
form drops of water which then fall to the earth as rain. If they are frozen, they become snow or
sleet. Once the water reaches the ground, it can flow across the land until it reaches rivers, lakes,
streams, or the sea. It can also sink into the ground and flow because of gravity through gaps in rock,
gravel and sand. Because of this, it reaches these bodies of water too. Now the cycle begins again,
when water is evaporated once more.

Many of us think water will always be there for us when we want it. Without water, living
things would die. You will die if you go without water for more than a week. Plants will die without
water and that would kill all of the animals that eat the plants.

The advantages and Disadvantage of Facebook

Everything which we have in the world has two sides; good aspect and bad one. It is also definitely
true for the phenomenon of facebook. There are a large number of people who have facebook
account. If we see closely, facebook also has some pros and cons.

Certainly, facebook has many advantages. The easiness of communication is what most people agree.
We have had old friends and we are being separated by time and distance. Facebook is a great way to
reconnect us again. We have a family who lives far away. Again, Facebook can helps us to stay
connected. We can send news and share pictures with them of recent family activities. This easy
communication makes us get together though we ar not.

Another advantage of facebook is for bussiness purpose. Some companies use facebook to promote
their products and services. They will make Facebook page and write about their product and services
and will be easily connected to millions of people in the world. Facebook is a great outlet for
companies which needs to find new clients and keep contact with them easily. This is actually the
biggest selling point to facebook.
Besides the advantages, facebook has also disadvantages. Facebook is sometime scaring and
annoying. It is about a "virtual" friend. Facebook makes such friend connection exist, though may not
in fact. Fake Identity is another disadvantage. Who can guarantee that your friends in facebook have
used the real identity?

Facebook newsfeed can also become annoying. There are a lot of people who just want to talk
everything which sometimes makes no sense for us. Spamming is another problem with facebook. We
often receive invitations to games or things which we don't like but we feel to be forced to like them
too.

According to me, facebook is not as an entirely bad thing or a completely good thing. Facebook is
absolutely about how we can use it wisely and safely.

We are indeed living in a period of garbage; a time when the nation's condition is
getting worse from time to time. It is hard to imagine how this could get any worse than it is now.

Former Czechoslovakia president, Vaclav Havel, who has a good image among his people,
showed that politics is the will to make people happy. Nevertheless, politicians nowadays only full of
energy when they talk about power, particularly when the issue brings benefits to them. One scandal
occurs and another follows, either by the same or different actor. Recently, for example, several
newspapers reveal the evidence that many candidates for the provincial legislative bodies have
falsified their academic degrees.

We should never retreat from the war against 'black' politicians. Therefore, we must say firmly that
there will be no compromise with politicians who build theirs careers on a cheat.

The Real Reason Why TV Is Bad for the Kids

"Books are good for children." "TV is bad for children." Everyone seems to know this. In the same
way that we know that we should be eating lots of fruits and vegetables and limiting sweets, we all
know that kids should spend a lot of time with books and relatively little time with TV.
But why? Can't kids learn just as much from TV as they do from books? There is no doubt that TV can
be educational. But one of the unforeseen consequences of TV viewing is reducing how much parents
talk with their children. And diminished parent-child interaction can have negative effects on children,
especially when they are young.
In a recent study of toddlers and pre-schoolers, we observed mothers and their children while they read
books, watched a pro-social TV program, or played with toys. We found TV viewing suppressed both
the amount and quality of mother-child communication. That is, moms made relatively few comments
to their children while co-viewing. When they did speak, their comments were often unrelated to what
their child said, thereby creating an unproductive exchange that could hinder children's opportunity for
learning.
Moms who read books to their children, however, not only talked significantly more but also used a
very high-quality form of communication that included asking questions, labelling objects, affirming
their child, and responding to their child's statements or questions with relevant information. It is
important to note that the increased quantity and quality of communication was not due to the fact that
moms were reading the words on the pages. Instead, this difference reflected the communication that
occurred above and beyond the actual reading that the mother did with the child.
Playing with toys also elicited a high amount of communication, including some high-quality forms of
interaction. Although not better than books, toy playing was significantly better than shared TV
viewing at encouraging communication.
With these results in mind, let's consider the child who spends a good chunk of the day watching TV.
From this perspective, the problem is not necessarily what content, either good or bad, the child has
experienced (of course content does make a difference too). Instead, the problem is what this child is
missing. Young children who watch lots of TV may be missing out on valuable - even crucial -
interactions with parents during a critical point in their development. Parent-child interaction, even
with children who can't yet speak, is vital to children's healthy development.
The American Academy of Pediatrics just released their updated TV guidelines for children ages 2 and
under. In their statement, they discourage all TV viewing for children in this age group. Part of the
justification for their recommendation is that TV viewing reduces parent-child communication.
Some parents may believe that they can't offer their children the kinds of educational experiences that
TV provides. But they are wrong. Children learn the best from real people, especially people who are
important to them. When parents talk with their children, they not only promote their language
development but also teach their children that they are valued and important. Reading books and
turning off the TV can facilitate these positive interactions.

A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s surface where molten rock can escape from underneath. The
Earth’s surface is made up of tectonic plates, which are spreading apart, crunching into each other, or
sliding beside one another. Volcanoes are typically found at the fault lines between these plates. There
can be active volcanoes, which are currently, or have recently erupted. There are also dormant
volcanoes, which haven’t erupted recently, and extinct volcanoes, which will never erupt again.
There are 4 major types of volcanoes:
Cinder Cone Volcanoes
These are the simplest type of volcano. They occur when particles and blobs of lava are ejected from a
volcanic vent. The lava is blown violently into the air, and the pieces rain down around the vent. Over
time, this builds up a circular or oval-shaped cone, with a bowl-shaped crater at the top. Cinder cone
volcanoes rarely grow larger than about 1,000 feet above their surroundings.
Composite Volcanoes
Composite volcanoes, or strato volcanoes make up some of the world’s most memorable mountains:
Mount Rainier, Mount Fuji, and Mount Cotopaxi, for example. These volcanoes have a conduit system
inside them that channels magma from deep within the Earth to the surface. They can have clusters of
vents, with lava breaking through walls, or issuing from fissures on the sides of the mountain. With all
this material coming out, they can grow thousands of meters tall. As we’ve seen with the famous
Mount Saint Helens, composite volcanoes can explode violently.
Shield Volcanoes
These are large, broad volcanoes that look like shields from above – hence the name. The lava that
pours out of shield volcanoes is thin, so it can travel for great distances down the shallow slopes of the
volcano. These volcanoes build up slowly over time, with hundreds of eruptions, creating many layers.
They’re not likely to explode catastrophically. Perhaps the best-known shield volcanoes are the ones
that make up the Hawaiian Islands, especially Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea.
Lava Domes
Volcanic or lava domes are created by small masses of lava which are too viscous (thick) to flow very
far. Unlike shield volcanoes, with low-viscosity lava, the magma from volcanic domes just piles up
over and around the vent. The dome grows by expansion of the lava within, and the mountain forms
from material spilling off the sides of the growing dome. Lava domes can explode violently, releasing
a huge amount of hot rock and ash.
