How to Fly a Hot Air Balloon
A hot air balloon consists of a basket, four big gas tanks, a burner and the balloon or
‘envelope’. First, the pilot puts four nylon poles into sockets on top of the basket. Then she puts the
burner on top of the poles. Next, she connects the cables to the burner frame. The cables also go under
the basket in order to hold everything together.
After this, she connects the hoses from the full gas tanks to the burner so that she can test it.
Next, two people hold the mouth of the balloon open while it is filled with cold air from the fan until it
is quite fat and tight.
Now for the difficult bit. The pilot lies on the ground, half in the basket. She turns on the gas
burner and points the flame into the ‘mouth’ of the balloon. This is so that the balloon slowly stands
up.
When the pilot is ready to go, she heats up the air in the balloon a bit more. This results in the air
in the balloon to be hot enough to get the balloon to rise off the ground.
11. How many activity does she do before she connects the hoses from the full gas tanks to the
burner?

A Visit to the Dentist
My tooth hurt through the night. I had to take a painkiller to lessen the pain. Worst of all I did not get a
wink of sleep the whole night through.
The next morning. I told my mother about my toothache. It was obvious I could not go to school. So
instead she took me to the dentist. I was horrified, but I had no choice.
At nine o'clock we waited outside the dentist's office. The nurse came and opened the door. I was the
first patient. She wrote down my particulars and told me to wait a moment. The dentist had not arrived
yet. Meanwhile the tooth still ached like mad.
The burly dentist arrived and I was ushered to the dentist's chair. Normally I would run away from the
frightening surgery with all its horrible drills and pliers, but I did not. I had to get the offending tooth
out.
So I sat down on the reclining chair while the dentist kept saying some reassuring words. I relaxed
somewhat. He asked me to open my mouth. I did so. He said that the tooth had to come out. I nodded
dumbly in reply.
I felt a slight prick of pain when he gave me an injection, but that was nothing compared to the
toothache. Soon, miraculously, all pain disappeared. The anaesthetic definitely worked very quickly.
Then before I knew it, the dentist told me that I could go. I looked at him quizzedly and he told me he
had already pull the tooth out. What wonder, I did not even feel it.
The dentist put a wad of cotton over the wound and he told me to keep my mouth shut for a while. I
nodded, smiled and went out into the waiting room where my mother was waiting for me. The visit to
the dentist was not too bad after all.

TIGER SHARK
Tiger sharks are named for the dark, vertical stripes found mainly on juveniles. As these sharks mature,
the lines begin to fade and almost disappear.
These large, blunt-nosed predators have a duly earned reputation as man-eaters. They are second only
to great whites in attacking people. But because they have a near completely undiscerning palate, they
are not likely to swim away after biting a human, as great whites frequently do.
They are consummate scavengers, with excellent senses of sight and smell and a nearly limitless menu
of diet items. They have sharp, highly serrated teeth and powerful jaws that allow them to crack the
shells of sea turtles and clams. The stomach contents of captured tiger sharks have included stingrays,
sea snakes, seals, birds, squids, and even license plates and old tires.
Tiger sharks are common in tropical and sub-tropical waters throughout the world. Large specimens
can grow to as much as 20 to 25 feet (6 to 7.5 meters) in length and weigh more than 1,900 pounds
(900 kilograms).
They are heavily harvested for their fins, skin, and flesh, and their livers contain high levels of vitamin
A, which is processed into vitamin oil. They have extremely low repopulation rates, and therefore may
be highly susceptible to fishing pressure. They are listed as near threatened throughout their range.

Some people think that the Internet is the most necessary thing which helps gaining education but
there are also those who blame it for making people addicted. In this article, I am going to write about
the pros and cons of the Internet.
One of the advantages of using Internet is that we can find every information we want to. The thing we
are searching will be for sure found in one of the millions of pages. What is more, the searching
process is very short and the Internet portals like 'YAHOO' and 'AltaVista' are created to help us with
it. In addition, if we have the Internet at home, we don't have to go to the libraries. In this way, we are
sparing our priceless time. Another advantage is that we can communicate almost with everyone
through the Net with help of e-mails and messengers. It's cheaper and faster than the normal mail.
On the other hand, the disadvantages are a serious problem for today's world. The Internet is causing
one of the worst diseases - the Internet addiction. People are wasting their time taking part in the
useless chats. However, it's good because we can talk with almost everyone from the furthest sides of
our planet, but on summary - it's not worth spending our time. In addition, if we don't have the ADSL*,
we spend too much money on the modem connection. There is also a danger for the teens because of
the presence of paedophiles on the Net and lot of pages, which includes the videos for adults.
To sum up, the Internet is very necessary but we have to learn how to use it and avoid all the dangers
of usage. We should remember that it's only a source of information and not a way to search for serious
friendship.

Text A
An experiment is an orderly procedure carried out with the goal of verifying, refuting, or establishing
the validity of a hypothesis. Experiments provide insight into cause-andeffect by demonstrating what
outcome occurs when a particular factor is manipulated. Experiments vary greatly in their goal and
scale, but always rely on repeatable procedure and logical analysis of the results. A child may carry out
basic experiments to understand the nature of gravity, while teams of scientists may take years of
systematic investigation to advance the understanding of phenomenon. Experiments can vary from
personal and informal (e.g. tasting a range of chocolates to find a favorite), to highly controlled (e.g.
tests requiring complex apparatus overseen by many scientists that hope to discover information about
subatomic particles). Uses of experiments vary considerably between the natural and social sciences.
An experiment usually tests a hypothesis, which is an expectation about how a particular process or
phenomenon works. However, an experiment may also aim to answer a "what-if" question,
without a specific expectation about what the experiment will reveal, or to confirm prior results. If an
experiment is carefully conducted, the results usually either support or disprove the hypothesis.
According to some Philosophies of science, an experiment can never "prove" a hypothesis, it can only
add support. Similarly, an experiment that provides a counter example can disprove a theory or
hypothesis. An experiment must also control the possible confounding factors−any factors that would
mark the accuracy or repeatability of the experiment or the ability to interpret the results.

Experiments might be categorized according to a number of dimensions, depending upon professional
norms and standards in different fields of study. In some disciplines (e.g., psychology or Political
Science), a 'true experiment' is a method of social research in which there are two kinds of variables.
The independent variable is manipulated by the experimenter, and the dependent variable is measured.
A controlled experiment often compares the results obtained from experimental samples against
control samples, which are practically identical to the experimental sample expect for the one aspect
whose effect is being tested. The term "experiment" usually implies a controlled experiment, but
sometimes controlled experiments are prohibitively difficult or impossible. In the case researchers
resort to natural experiments or quasi-e xperiments. Natural experiments rely solely on observations of
the variables of the system under study, rather than manipulation of just one or a few variables as
occurs in controlled experiments. Field experiments are so named in order to draw a contrast with
laboratory experiments, which enforce scientific control by testing a hypothesis in the artificial and
highly controlled setting of a laboratory.

E. A number of dimensions in different fields of study will prone to use field experiment
32. Based on both passages it can be hypothesized that ....

Five Bodies Found in Boat off Japanese Coast
The boat was washed ashore near an island off Japan. Five bodies have been found in a badly damaged
boat with Korean language markings off Japan's west coast.
The 10m vessel washed ashore on Sado Island, Niigata City in waters between Japan and the Korean
peninsula. All those on board were adult males, Japanese broadcaster NHK said. Police have not
confirmed their nationalities but suspect the men were North Korean.
52
In the past a very small number of North Korean refugees have made the journey to Japan by boat.
Local fishermen found the vessel, weighing more than 4,500kg (five tonnes), around 09:00 local time
(17:00 GMT), police say. The fishermen told local media that they found no engines attached to the
boat. The men on board were estimated to have died at least a month ago, police added.
In September last year, a boat carrying nine North Koreans arrived in Kanazawa, further to the south.
The group were later resettled in South Korea.
In January 2012 another group of four North Korean fishermen found by the Japanese coastguard after
developing engine trouble were repatriated at their request.
A police spokesman told AFP news agency that the Korean characters on the boat - which appeared to

A Journey by Car
My father bought a new car one day. We were all very excited. He promised to take us to Melaka to
visit my grandparents the coming Sunday.
Sunday morning was bright and breezy. We hopped into the brand new car and soon we were heading
out of Petaling Jaya towards the expressway. My mother sat in the front passenger seat while my
father drove. I sat behind with my younger sister.
As it was Sunday the roads were not very busy. Soon we were on the expressway travelling at a
leisurely pace. My father is a careful driver and he does not drive too fast or dangerously. This proved
to be good for there was a speed-trap manned by the police along the expressway. I saw some cars
stopped by the police. They had obviously been speeding.
Driving along the expressway tend to be monotonous. I actually fell asleep once we passed Seremban.
When I awoke, we were already at the Ayer Keroh toll gate. My father paid the toll and steered the car
towards Melaka Town. On the way we passed many interesting sights. My father promised to stop by
on our way home. We had to visit our grandparents first.
We left Ayer Keroh and all its factories behind as we journeyed into the town itself. Like all towns,
there were many cars and other vehicles. Also there were many tourists. Melaka has many places of
historical interest and thus this was not surprising.
Finally we arrived at my grandparents' house in Klebang Besar. The journey had taken about two
hours. We stepped out of the car. My grandparents greeted us happily.

Making Organic Compost.
To grow beautiful flower or tasty vegetables, gardeners often put compost in their soil. Compost is
produced by allowing vegetable matter to decompose naturally.
How do you start?
First, the compost’s ingredients have to be collected. Any raw vegetable or plant material is suitable,
including leaves grass, vegetable peelings and fruit cores. To introduce helpful bacteria into the
compost, some garden soil is also mixed in.
Where do you put it?
Next, the compost mixture is put into a special composting bin, or piled up in the corner of the garden.
The compost is left alone for many months while nature does its work.
What turns it into compost?
Microbes, such as bacteria and fungi, soon begin to rot the vegetable material. As a side-effect, natural
warmth is produced in the compost. This, in turn, helps to speed up the process. Eventually, natural
decomposition transforms the waste vegetable material into soft brown compost.
What is the compost used for?
Finally, gardeners either dig the compost into the soil or spread it on the surface. Compost replaces
nutrients in the soil, because it contains nitrogen and other important elements.
13. What is the topic of the text?

Slang is definitely a way to distinguish yourself as part of a group or separate from another group.
Teens use slang to show their independence from their parents, and give them and their friends a
language they can call their own. Slang sometimes allows them to communicate without outsiders
understanding, or to show off that they belong to a particular group. Teens like to use slang words for
several reasons.
Firstly, they use slang to show their individuality. Daily teen conversations can be
incomprehensible to many parents and adults. Influenced by MTV, hip-hop culture and the popularity of
e-mail, teenagers shorten words, stretch definitions and pronounce terms with a different style. The way
they talk shows their confidence.
Secondly, they use slang because it is easier to say. They might talk the way they do with words like
"coz" for "because" and "holla" for "hello" and other expressions because the words are cool and easier to
use, not because they are lazy.
Finally, they use slang for speed and usefulness, and a little humor of the day. Slang flows quicker
than standard language. Slang can color their vocabulary and sentences, so that they don't seem boring.
Thus, from the reasons above, it can be concluded that teens use slang words because using their

The sugar glider is a marsupial, just like the other Australia animals – the Kangaroo, the koala and
the wombat for instant. The sugar glider is a possum – very similar to the tupai in Indonesia. It
basically lives in trees. It eats leaves and fruit. However, the Australia sugar glider has a very special
skill. It can jump from tree to tree like a tupai but it can also ‘sort of fly’ as well. In fact, it glides or
terbang laying in Bahasa Indonesia. When it jumps from one tree to another it spreads its four legs out
wide; and its extra skin also spreads out and function like a parachute.

A Nightmare
"Don't eat just before going to bed!" my mother used to tell me. "You might get a
nightmare." How right she was. I never believed her until it happened to me.
It was on a night when I felt hungry just as I was about to go to bed. So I made myself a
peanut-butter sandwich and a large cold glass of milk. After consuming them I went to bed.
Soon I drifted off into a troubled sleep. I dreamt that I was with a group of people looking
for an old woman. I was not sure why we were looking for her but we all seemed afraid of her.
Somehow we had to find her. So there I was, searching high and low for her in frightful places I
had never been before. Sometimes I seemed to be flying while at other times I seemed unable to
move. The whole atmosphere was one of fear, like a dreadful horror-movie in which I was a
victim.
After some searching I entered a darkened room and saw a figure sleeping on a bed. As I
got nearer the figure suddenly threw away the blanket, got up and stared at me. It was an ugly old
woman with shiny golden teeth. She raised her claw-like fingers and walked towards me.
I wanted to run but was unable to. I tried to scream but found that I could not. In horror I
struggled and struggled to get away from the frightful woman.
The next moment I gave a muffled yell and found myself panting on my bed. My
goodness, what a horrible nightmare it was! For a minute or so I lay on my bed not daring to
close my eyes for fear of falling asleep again and continuing the nightmare. Then I sat up on my
bed until the horrible feeling passed. From then on I never eat just before going to sleep

How Rainbow is Formed
Rainbow is one of optic phenomena that happens in the atmosphere of the earth naturally.
We can see it at mountin range, or when it is cloudy, or when it is raining and rising of sun. We
have to be the other side for looking. We just can see it a half of circle form, but acctually the
rainbow is a circle form. We can see it perfectly, if it is seen by standing in the high place. It is
real that rainbow is a circle form not like parabola form. On the ground, we can not see perfectly,
except if we are in the high place like in the air plane or standing on top of moutain. When we are
looking at rainbow’s colors, we will see them that ordered of red is on the highest order, and
purple is on the lowest order.
Red is more dominant than another color caused by having biggest wave between others.
Therefore the red one is in the highest order and purple one is in lowest order. How rainbow is
formed? Try to watch it when light of sun concerns a 90-degree angle mirror or a glass prism
side, or surface of soap foam. We can see colors on the light. The light is rayyed to be some wave
lenght of light that it is seen by our eyes as red, bright red, yellow, green, blue and purple. These
colors are components of light that they are called visible light. The other component is invisible
light such as infrared (red is in the right side), and ultraviolet (bright red is in the left side).

Corruption and Indonesian Culture
62
Corruption has happened for many years and today it becomes a bad culture in Indonesia
for three reasons.
Most adult Indonesian or foreigners have known and admitted that corruptions happen in
many places. The daily newspapers, news programs on TV and radio have reported corruptions
are done everywhere, almost in all departments or public services of this country. Corruptions
happen in health, education departments and banks. When we manage to get some documents in
public service offices, we usually need much money to pay. Manipulations happen everywhere.
The actions to eliminate corruption are weak. The ever stronger culture seems not to
come to an end when the responsible institutions who have to reinforce the justice today commit
corruption. This is the worst. Corruptions happen in police department, courts where judges,
public prosecutors, lawyers make deals to do corruption. All of us also heard in the end of 2004,
Probosutejo reported that he had bribed the Supreme Court, or called Mahkamah Agung which
becomes the highest level where the justice can be obtained. Perhaps you have to try to come to
the local courts and see what happen there. You will see practices of bribery and other kinds of
corruption. Therefore, we can say that corruptions becomes our culture. Do you like it?
The citizens have no goodwill to fight against the corruption. They create the situations in
which people have opportunities to do corruptions. The citizens like to break the rules because
they are not disciplined. For example, in the street when they drive a car or ride motorcycle, they
do not have the driving license or necessary documents. Then, they are caught by the local
policemen. To avoid more difficulties, they like to bribe the officer. The officer let them go then.
In other words, the citizens and officers are the same, doing corruption together. If only the
people were critical, disciplined, and obey the rules, and willing to report any wrong behaviors,
this country will not be number one corrupting country in the world.
Conclusion based on the reasons, we can conclude that corruption is becoming a bad
culture in Indonesia if it is not ended soon by all of us. It seems that there must be more severe
penalty for the Corruptors. Do we still care about the future of this country?

How do seasons happen?
Seasons come to us regularly. We have probably noticed that it gets warmer in summer
or dry season while it get colder in the winter or wet season. However do we know how these
seasons change?
Seasons happen and change every year. This happens because the earth tilts back and
forth as it goes around the sun. During the summer, the earth tilts toward the sun. It makes half of
the earth hotter. This condition is what we call summer. During the other half of the year, the
earth tilts away from the sun. As a result, it makes that half of the earth cooler. This cool
condition is then what we call winter.
The different parts of the world have the same season at different times. In the northern
half of the world, winter happens during the months of December, January and February. The
regions are such North America and Europe. In the other hand, the southern half of the world has
winter during the months of June, July and August. The regions are like South America and
Australia. How does this difference happen? The same season happens at different times because
the top and bottom halves of the earth tilt away from the sun at different times.

Moon is the earth's satellite which we often see in the night. The Moon is the one place in
our solar system where humans have visited. For the first time on July 20, 1969, astronauts Neil
Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin landed the Lunar Module of Apollo 11 on the surface of the Moon.
Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the Moon. However do you know what descriptive
facts about the Moon are?
The moon rises in the east and sets in the west. It moves toward the east in our sky by
about 12 degrees each day. The Moon is about 384,400 kilometers from Earth. The Moon has a
diameter of 2,000 miles which is like to 3,476 kilometers.
70
The surface of the Moon has many things, such as craters, lava plains, mountains, and
valleys. Scientists believe the craters were formed around 3.5 to 4.5 billion years ago by meteors
hitting the moon's surface. The Moon does not have atmosphere, wind and weather that is why
the footprints left there on the Moon by the Apollo astronauts will remain there for millions of
years
The Moon is not a light source. It means that Moon does not make its own light. It reflects light
from the sun. All of us can see the Moon especially in the night because light from the Sun
bounces off it back to the Earth. If the Sun wasn't there, we can not see the Moon.
The moon influences many of the tides in the oceans. This is because of the gravity force
between the Earth and Moon. At full Moon and new Moon, the Sun, Earth and Moon are lined
up, producing the higher than normal tides. When the Moon is at first or last quarter, it forms
smaller neap tides.
28. The result of the absence of atmosphere, wind and weather in the moon causes ...

HOUSE HUSBANDS’ HEART RISK
Most people assume that life in the rat race is bad for your health. But reversing the traditional
gender roles, being a house husband is a stressful business, according to the latest research by
American scientists. By giving up their jobs in order to become house husbands, men increase their
risk of heart attack or coronary disease by as much as 82%, according to research based on 10 year
study of 2.500 people in Boston, USA.
According to Dr Elaine Eaker, the key to the problem is that some men became stressed about
performing a role not traditionally assign to them by society. Men who stay at home tend not to
have the same levels of support from friends and family as women do the same.
Jack O’Sullivan, of the Father’s Direct group, was quoted as saying: “Society expects the main
career should be a woman and society is structured around that. Day care is called mother and
toddler groups and some men feel awkward about belonging to those groups.
Professor Gary Cooper, a psychologist at the University of Manchester, said many men tend to
underestimate the task of caring for a family. He said “Most men think being a house husband
involves putting on a bit of washing, taking the kids to school and then putting their feet up with a
cup of coffee.
They are crazy. Most men are not used to performing a variety of activities simultaneously (the
kind of multi-tasking which is second nature to most women).”
It is estimated that men have taken over the main homemaker’s role in one in seven homes, as
increasing numbers of women become the main breadwinner. The study also found that women in
high-powered jobs were more likely to develop heart disease than those in more junior positions.

The following text is for questions 24 and 27.
The ethnic groups in the mountain regions of southwest and central Sulawesi (Celebes) are known
by the name of Toraja, which has come to mean “Those who live upstream” or “Those who live in
the mountains”. Their name is in fact derived from the word Raja, which in Sanskrit means “King”.
The society is hierarchically structured (the noblemen are called rengnge, the ordinary people to
makaka, and the slaves to kaunan) birth determines which rank a person will occupy.
The distinctive features of the traditional houses (tongkonan) of the Toraja are the “Buffalo horns”,
the roof design and the rich decoration on the walls. The buffalo is a symbol of status, courage,
strength, and fighting spirit.
Designed as a representation of the universe, the tongkonan is constructed in three parts: the
upper world (the roof), the world of humans (the middle of the building), and the underworld (the
space under the floor). The highly distinctive roofs constructed by the Toraja have given rise to
various ingenious interpretations. Certainly the roof is something of deep significance for the
Toraja, and even today they build “Modern” (in other words houses built with cement) houses
with such roofs.

Antibiotic is a drug produced by certain microbes. Antibiotics destroy other microbes that
damage human tissues. They are used to treat a wide variety of diseases, including gonorrhea,
tonsillitis, and tuberculosis. Antibiotics are sometimes called “Wonder drugs” because they can
cure diseases such as meningitis, pneumonia, and scarlet fever. But, when the antibiotics are
overused or misused, these drugs make a person sensitive being attacked by a superbug.
Antibiotics do not always distinguish between harmless and dangerous microbes. If a drug
destroys too many harmless microorganism, the pathogenic ones (the dangerous microbes) will
have a greater chance to multiply. This situation often leads to the development of a new
infection called suprainfection.
Extensive use of some antibiotics may damage organs and tissues. For example, streptomycin,
which is used to treat tuberculosis, has caused kidney damage and deafness.
75
Resistance to antibiotics may be ecquired by pathogenic microbes. The resistant microbes
transfer genetic material to non-resistant microbes and cause them to become resistant. During
antibiotic treatment, non-resistant microbes are destroyed, but resistant types survive and
multiply.
To avoid the side effect of antibiotics, you’d better not urge your doctor to prescribe antibiotics.
Keep in mind that antibiotics are only useful for bacterial infections and have no effect on
viruses, so they cannot be used for chicken pox, measles, and other viral diseases.
13. Which diseases cannot be cured by antibiotics?
A. Tonsillitis
B. Meningitis
C. Chicken pox
D. Tuberculosis
E. Scarlet fever
14. What are discussed in paragraph two and four?

Throughout history man has changed his physical environment in order to improve his way of life.
With the tools of technology he has altered many physical features of the earth. He has transformed
woodlands and prairies into farmlands and made lakes and reservoirs out of rivers for irrigation
purposes or hydroelectric power. Man has also modified the face of the earth by draining marshes and
cutting through mountains to build roads and railways. But, apparently, man does not care about the
result of what he has done. The following are the impacts of it.
Man’s changes to the physical environment have not always beneficial results. Today, pollution of the
air and water is an increasing danger to the health of the planet. Each day thousands of tons of gasses
come out of the exhaust motor vehicle, smoke from factories, polluted the air of the industrialized
areas and the surrounding areas of the countryside. The air in cities is becoming increasingly
unhealthy.
The pollution of water is equally harmful, in the sea, pollution from oil is increasing and is killing
enormous numbers of algae, fish and birds. The whole ecological balance of the sea is being changed.
The same problem exists in rivers. Industrial wastes have already made many rivers lifeless.
So, I personally suggest that it is now necessary for man to limit the growth of technology in order to
survive on earth.

I usually woke up at eight o'clock a.m. and went to the Press Center to check the daily
schedule of briefings and press conferences. It was usually held by the United Nation officials or

It was challenging to visit different refugee camps to find soft stories, human interest stories.
After that I went back to the Press Center to cover the press conferences of the day.
It was heart breaking when I saw these survivors fight for food and secondhand clothing.
Unfortunately as they said, the food and clothing were limited and inadequate. Emerging to glaring,
fool noon, it was time to go back to Press Center to write stories and race against time. I was always
fearing that the internet would come crushing down.
After everything was done, only then I remembered to eat. Most times, I only ate once a day
because I always had to rush and again it was difficult to find food. I had to travel quite far. I needed

For ages, sailors have said that it is good luck to see dolphins swimming alongside boats.
Their presence meant that land was near, which would be vital information if a boat and her crew
were in danger. Some dolphins have even protected shipwrecked sailors from sharks. It is no wonder
that these unique and fascinating creatures have long been known as our friends.
You may think dolphins are fish, but they are actually mammals. They are related to whales
and porpoises, and they evolved around 10 million years ago. Dolphins breathe air, give birth to live
young, and feed them milk. They are social animals, living together in groups called pods or schools
that range in size of up to 12. In places rich in food, many schools can combine together to form
pods of up to 1,000 dolphins.
Dolphins are thought to be intelligent animals because of their playfulness, curiosity, and
quick ability to learn. They seem to communicate with each other through a combination of
squeaks, whistles, and clicks. While scientists don't know what they are going on about, it is thought
that dolphins are telling each other that food is nearby, or warning each other of approaching danger.
Dolphins use sonar to discover an object's size, shape, and location. By sending out a series of clicks
and receiving the echo that bounces off the object, they can differentiate between a shark and a boat.
Unfortunately, dolphins have faced increasing danger in recent years. Fishermen in pursuit
of profitable tuna may accidentally trap dolphins in their nets, killing them in the process. These
intelligent mammals of the sea deserve our protection and respect.

In 1828, baby Leo was born into the rich and powerful Tolstoy family of Central Russia. He
would grow up to write two of the greatest novels in the history of literature and inspire social
reform that would make an impact on the world. Not just another Russian author, Leo Tolstoy was
a teacher, a philosopher, and the grandfather of non-violent revolution.
Tolstoy was an unsettled young man. He was a poor student who left his university when he
could find no meaning in his studies. He joined the army but could not endure the violence and
soon left that as well. By this time, Tolstoy was being noticed as a writer but he still felt unfulfilled.
It was during this time that Tolstoy wrote his most famous books, War and Peace and Anna
Karenina. In them, Tolstoy offered a new kind of fiction to Russian readers. He described events
and characters so detailed and convincing that they blurred the line between the imaginary and real
life. In Tolstoy's version, it was not great leaders that moved history, but the common people. His
work has been called, "not art, but a piece of life."
Tolstoy suffered a mid-life crisis after writing Anna Karenina. Giving up his fortune to live
among the peasants, he decided he must find the meaning of life or else kill himself. What he found
came from the core of his Christian faith—universal love and passive resistance to evil. Gandhi
later adopted this message in his campaign to free India. Martin Luther King, Jr. did the same in his
fight for racial equality in America. The effects of passive resistance can still be felt today. Tolstoy
was a gifted writer, but it was his revolutionary ideas that changed the course of history and the
world in which we live.

unusual for the moon to appear to pass close to Venus. In fact, the moon appears somewhere near it
about once a month. However, most people don’t see these events because they are visible in the

Should performance enhancing drugs be accepted in sports?
The issue of using drugs to enhance athlete’s performance is controversial. Those who agree to
the use of drugs in enhancing performance say that most top players in all sports take drugs to
train harder and feel no pain during play. The trainers, sports doctors, nutritionists,
physiotherapists, and managers of the big names make sure banned substances are taken at the
safest and most efficient levels. The main effect of banning such substances has turned
performers and their coaches into liars and cheaters.
On the other hand, some still believe that performance enhancing drugs in sport should be
banned. Performance enhancing drugs are not only prohibited because they violate the spirit of
sport but because they can damage the health of athletes.
I think the idea of allowing them in sports could lead to a situation whereby sportsmen and
women are used as human guinea pigs for a constant fl ow of new, unregulated substances.
1. What argument is given by those who disagree with the use of performance enhancing drugs?
A. Athletes health is badly affected
B. Guinea pigs are awfully needed

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to complain about the Cataway that I purchased from you in July. It is not working
correctly.
I received the product on 23rd March. Following the instructions in the box, I carefully set up the
Cataway in the corner of our garden. I allowed it to charge for the required 6 hours before turning it
on. Once it was turned on, the Cataway completely ignored all the cats that wandered in and out of
our garden. It did, however, squirt water both at my daughter and at my self. This was not very
pleasant. I purchased this product to get rid of cats, not to provide outdoor showering facilities for my
family. I would either like this faulty product replaced with a working version or a full refund on the
money I have wasted. I expect to receive a response to my letter within 14 working days or I will seek
legal advice.
Yours faithfully,
Mrs. Jane Markey.

The Civil Rights Movement in the United States is not new but dates back to the first years of
slavery and the events of the Civil War. But major achievements were gained during the second half
of the 20th century. Before this period, African-Americans had suffered from inhuman segregation,
violence and exploitation. The Civil Rights Movement used nonviolent protests to outlaw racial
discrimination against African Americans and restore voting rights to them.
Major campaigns of civil resistance were the main feature of the movement. Crisis situations
between activists and government authorities were produced by acts of nonviolent protests and civil
disobedience during the period between 1955 and 1968. Federal, state, and local governments,
businesses, and communities often had to respond immediately to these situations that highlighted the
inequities faced by African Americans. Forms of protest and/or civil disobedience included boycotts
such as the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955–1956) in Alabama; "sit-ins" such as the
influential Greensboro sit-ins (1960) in North Carolina; marches, such as the Selma to Montgomery
marches (1965) in Alabama; and a wide range of other nonviolent activities.
Noted legislative achievements during this phase of the Civil Rights Movement were passage
of Civil Rights Act of 1964, that banned discrimination based on "race, color, religion, or national
origin" in employment practices and public accommodations; the Voting Rights Act of 1965, that
restored and protected voting rights; the Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965, that
dramatically opened entry to the U.S. to immigrants other than traditional European groups; and the
Fair Housing Act of 1968, that banned discrimination in the sale or rental of housing. African
Americans re-entered politics in the South, and across the country young people were inspired to
action.

There is no one best way to deal with pests in agriculture. Pesticides are commonly used, but this may
cause many problems. Combining different management operations is the most effective way to
control pests. Firstly, the chemicals in pesticides may build up as residues in the environment. This
reduces the quality of farm’s products. As well, pests can become resistant to pesticides gradually.
This means that newer and stronger ones have to be developed. Some pesticides affect non target
animals such as fish and bees. This affects the natural balance. To wipe out agricultural pests
completely may be very expensive. Sometimes pest damage costs less than the method of control.
84
Finally, understanding the ecology of the area helps a lot in pest control. Natural enemies can be used
to control a pest. Pesticides that do not affect the natural enemies should be chosen. Therefore,
integrated pest management is a safe and more effective option in agriculture.

Do you know the moon? At night you can see it shining brightly in the sky. The moon is one of

the sun, the moon, and even stars and other objects outside the solar system. It studies thousands of
millions of stars that form the galaxies. Our galaxy is one of the thousands of million galaxies that
make up the universe. Astronomy is the oldest science. A person who is expert in astronomy is called

The first obvious advantage of air travel is that it is quick. You can fly from Europe to America in a
few hours, and with the introduction of supersonic planes, travelling time between continents is
getting shorter. It is very easy and comfortable to travel by plane; someone looks after your luggage
and all you have to do is to get on, sit down, relax and enjoy a meal or a film. Your comfortable seat
is reserved and there is excellent waitress service. Another point in favour of air travel is that it is
relatively cheap, especially for long-distance travel.
On the other hand, travelling by air has some disadvantages. Perhaps the most important is that (For
example) you fly directly to your destination and you have no feeling of travelling from one country
to another. Another disadvantage is that because air travel is so quick, people going long distances
non-stop often suffer from tiredness; so they save time travelling, but waste time recovering. It also
happens that passengers are often delayed by fog and other weather conditions.
Anyway, I think that the advantages of travelling by plane outweigh the disadvantages, mainly when
you have to travel long distances and want to save time.

E. The advantages of travelling by air are less than the disadvantages

The underlined word refers to ....

C. A meal

The conjunction “On the other hand” has similar as ....

Alpha Centauri is a triple-star system. One of the three stars in Alpha Centauri is
Proxima Centauri, which is the nearest star to the Earth, except of course for the Sun. The
name “Proxima” comes from a Latin word which means “close”.
Even though Proxima Centauri is the closest star to the earth outside of our solar
system, it is not really close. Interstellar distance are so large they are almost impossible to
imagine. A person travelling in a modern spacecraft would not arrive at Proxima Centauri
90
within this life time or the next, or even ten lifetimes because the distance is so great. Light
travels at a speed of 186,000 miles per second, and is still takes light more than four years to
travel from Proxima Centauri to the Earth.
Alpha Centauri can be easily seen in the night sky without a telescope from certain
parts of the Earth. It is the third brightest star in the sky, out of approximately 6,000 visible

Text 1. The following text is for questions 11 to 13
According to new estimates that will be presented at this year’s World Economic Forum in
Davos, US$ 100 trillion is needed by 2030 to finance infrastructure needs worldwide. This investment
needs to be greened – its design and use must rely on less carbon and fewer natural resources – if we
are to avoid a steady increase in global temperatures of four degrees Celcius or more in the coming
decades. At least in the short term, green investment cost more than business –as-usual investment –
about $700 million a year to the G20-inspired Green Growth Action Alliance, chaired by former
Mexican President Felipe Calderon.
Additional outlays of $140 billion annually are required just to green the estimated $15
trillion investment in energy generation needed by 2020. These incremental costs are insignificant
compared to the economic and other damage – including, for example, rising and volatile commodity
and food prices – implied by unrestrained climate change. But someone still needs to put up the extra
money. Investment in clean energy has increased, with global spending on renewable energy rising
six-fold since 2004. But the total remains far too small. While active government support remains
crucial to advancing green investment at scale, wide-spread fiscal weakness in pulling in the opposite
direction.
Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain, for example, have reduced their rates for solar
photovoltaic feed-in tariffs, while the expiration of the United States’ federal production tax credited
for renewable energy has undermined investment in wind installations there.
