Renewable Energy

About the Department :

nergy is vital for improving the quality of human life of every nation. The growing scarcity
of conventional fuels and their adverse ecological and environmental impacts have raised
global interest in harnessing various renewable energy sources. Renewable Energy Technologies
are emerging as the source of sustainable energy, which will be very important for future energy
supply strategies of the entire world. Availability of adequate manpower and appropriate resources is
crucial for success in this endeavour. Providing renewable energy education at all the required levels
in an efficient and effective manner is a challenging task.

With an increasing energy crisis and global climate change issues, renewable energy has occupied
a prominent position in industry and international relations in recent years. This has resulted in an
increased demand for specialists and engineers in renewable energy. There are very few institutes
in India and First in Karnataka that offer a structured programme to cover the diverse range of
issues to meet this demand. The program at NMIT is intended to fill the gap and provide the much
needed human resource capacity in renewable energy technology and management. The program is
designed to train students not only in renewable energy technology and implementation but also in
equally important synergetic areas of energy infrastructure, energy economics, and energy conversion
technologies. The program will lead to a specialization in renewable energy

Machine Design, involving knowledge in multifarious areas like Material Science, Static, Kinematic and
Dynamic analyses of Machine components, forms a very important branch of Engineering Science.
The program emphasizes on the creative, innovative and constructive aspects of design. Some of the
interesting subjects covered in this program are Theory of Elasticity, and Plasticity, Experimental Stress
Analysis, Advanced Vibrations, Finite Element Methods, Tribology, Dynamics & Mechanism Design,
Composites, Fracture Mechanics, Nanotechnology and Mechatronics. Apart from theory the students
also take part in internship training at relevant industries or at In-house research centers at NMIT
and continue their final semester Project further under the joint supervision of the Technical Experts
from Industry on Research Centers and one of the senior faculty members of the department. An
Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory has been set-up in the department with emphasis on the special
manufacturing facilities like Stri Casting, Centrifugal and Centrifuge Casting. It also houses Heat

OSTIUM M. Tech in Thermal Power

M. Tech in
Thermal Power Engineering

About the Department :

hermal Power Engineering was first offered as a specialization for MTech degree under
VTU by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NMIT in 2010. However, since 2015-
16, this post graduate program has been enjoying the Autonomous status like all other post
graduate studies existing right now at NMIT. The syllabus and scheme of each subject has been
modified thoroughly and reviewed by the respective Board of Studies (BOS) consisting of some senior
departmental faculty members along with a few external experts from reputed universities and
industries. The BOS has approved the modified syllabi of different subjects to be taught. Expertise
in Thermal Power Engineering enables the development of long term solutions to meet the rapidly
growing energy needs of our planet. In this program, students study Alternative Energy Sources such
as wind, solar and biomass as well as sustainable energy production from existing sources like coal, oil
and gas. They also learn the fundamental principles of Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Combustion,
Heat Transfer, Finite Element Method, CFD etc. Students are provided adequate exposure through
departmental laboratories, industrial visits and workshops. The laboratories meant for practical training
of the students, are well equipped in the areas of Heat Transfer, IC Engines, CAD, Fluid Machinery. The
Centre for Computational Fluid Dynamics also provides internships and hands-on training for the
interested students

Research work for the students are mostly related to subjects like Fluid Dynamics, Heat Transfer,
Renewable Energy Sources, Biofuels etc. Four of our students – Shashikumar, Sandeep, Rakesh &
Charan carried out their final year projects in CFD. Multiple research areas explored were Conjugate
Heat Transfer, Transonic Aerodynamics, Evaporative Cooling, and Laminar to Turbulent Transition. The
other very interesting topic pursued by few students focussed on the enhancement of heat transfer
rate using twisted tape inserts in tubes using a Nanofluid. The enhancement of heat transfer rate
and the pressure drop have been measured setting up an experimental test facility and validated
against CFD predictions as well. The remaining students have worked in the area of Biofuel and Solar
Refrigeration partly in collaboration with faculty members from Nagarjuna College of Engineering, using
their experimental facilities. All the fourteen students of the fifth batch (2014-2016) have successfully
completed their final year projects and eight of them secured FCD (First Class with Distinction) in their
final semester.

The sixth batch (2015-2017) consisting of nine students only have completed their internship
and continuing thereafter their fourth semester project work. As suggested by VTU, internships were
arranged either at established industries or at reputed institutes like CSIR-NAL, Aerospace Deptt., IISc,
Centre for Sustainable Energy, IISc or even at our own Centres of CFD and Nanotechnology, NMIT.
Shashikumar, our topper of the fifth batch, who worked on the project entitled CFD analysis of Cooled
Heat Sinks of Electronic Equipments, has now joined his PhD program with the Applied Mechanics
Department, IIT Madras. Md. Asheruddin, the topper of our sixth batch has worked on an interesting
project on Gasification of Biomass Particles at the Centre for Sustainable Energy, IISc Bangalore under
the supervision of Prof. Dosh and has now been selected by the relevant apex committee for his
admission to IISc for continuing his research work further leading to PhD degree at IISc. The seventh
batch (2016-2018) consisting of six students are just finishing their first semester examinations.

Typical Twisted Tape Inserts with or without holes

Experimental Set up at NMIT for measuring Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop

Enhancement of Heat Transfer rate and Pressure Drop while using Twisted Tape Inserts for water
mixed with Nanofluid as working medium

Our young faculty member Mr.K.N.Pavan and his students have initiated enormous effort to
analyse the design and performance of heat exchangers in industry. Both experimental as well as
computational investigation (using the CFD software STAR CCM+) have been pursued on how to
augment the convective heat transfer rate in conventional heat exchangers modifying the flow path
installing Twisted Tape Inserts in the pipe and further using Nanofluid as the working medium. The rate
of heat transfer is found to increase by using inserts which modify the geometry of the flow passage
in the duct. The kind of twisted tapes used, the experimental set up in the Heat Transfer laboratory
of the department and further how the heat transfer rate and the corresponding pressure losses are
enhanced are shown in the figures above. Three different research papers have been published and
presented on this excellent piece of work.

Md Asheruddin, our MTech student of 2016-2018 batch carried out another excellent project
work on the thermal aspects of the Gasification process - a clean and efficient way of producing a
combustible gas from biomass mostly in a fixed-bed gasifier, where the reactant gases (H2O, CO2)
react with a bed of charcoal particles (solid residue after wood pyrolysis). The process of gasification of
a typical biomass particle is illustrated in the following sketch.

91

M. Tech in Thermal Power

Gasification Process for a single particle Gasification occurring in a packed bed

Investigations to understand the process of Gasification of wood, charcoal or coal

The gasification eventually produces syngas, consisting of the clean hydrogen to be burnt in an
engine. Asheruddin has now joined the Research Group of Prof. Dosh at IISc as a Research Scholar
to work for his PhD thesis on the CFD analyses coupled to extensive experiments on gasification of
biomass particles like charcoal, wood and coal.
