15 History of St. Joseph’s College of Commerce St. Joseph’s College of Commerce (SJCC), formerly a part of St. Joseph’s College, established in the year 1882 at Langford Road is managed by the Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society (BJES). e BJES is a unit of a Catholic religious order called Society of Jesus founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540 and was later registered under the Karnataka Societies’ Registration Act, 1960 on 31st March 1973. e Department of Commerce was established at St. Joseph’s College in the year 1949; however, it later became an independent college with its own building on Brigade Road in the year 1972. Soon aer its establishment as an independent institution it was brought under the purview of University Grants Commission (UGC) for inclusion under the 12B as well as 2(F) statuses. e college has in its vision a model for higher education which encourages individuals to dream of a socially just world and in its mission a strategy to empower individuals in realizing that dream. With an objective of imparting quality education in the eld of Commerce and Management, the college has been innovating in all aspects of higher education over a long period of time. ese innovations were facilitated by the establishment of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). In the year 2004, SJCC found itself growing and expanding extensively as an institution with the establishment of the Business Administration Department and introduction of the Bachelor of Business Administration Programme. Further bolstered with the granting of autonomous status to the college by UGC in September 2005, the college has taken a lead in reforming curricula and syllabi, examination and evaluation pattern, and teaching and learning methods through the Board of Studies, the Academic Council and the Governing Council composed of eminent academicians, industry experts and notable alumni. e four cycles of NAAC accreditation starting from the year 2000 in which it secured ‘ve stars’, next in the year 2007 an ‘A’ grade, in the year 2012 again an ‘A’ grade and recently in February 2021 an ‘A++’ have acknowledged the signicant growth of the college over the years. 19 The story of St. Joseph’s College of Commerce (Autonomous) Bengaluru, is indeed the story of the proverbial mustard seed of the Gospel. Beginning in 1949 as a department of St. Joseph’s College, now a University, and translocated to the present campus in 1972 as a full-fledged college with a vision of imparting higher education in order to transform human society by changing human individuals imbued with competence, conscience, character, compassion and commitment, the college has now stepped into its Golden Jubilee year as an autonomous research centre with a potential for excellence, of an ‘A++’ grade, and, I dare say, bids fair to be a university in its own right in not too distant a future, already offering a huge multiplicity of courses, designed to impart a holistic and integral formation to its students, fostering in them a spirit of academic excellence, helping them to develop social concern, and facilitating their character formation so that they become “men and women for and with others”, inspired by the motto ‘Fide et Labore’ (‘Faith and Toil’). Indeed, deep faith in God and oneself, combined with hard work have made these five golden decades of the college a momentous journey with a rich academic, professional, social, spiritual and cultural legacy as an institution of excellence, providing diversity, and inculcating constitutional values to generations of Josephites. Having been privileged to be associated with this premier institution in diverse capacities at different times, I feel personally involved in the fervor and felicity of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. Therefore, even as I join in the hymn of praise and thanksgiving that wells up from deep within the hearts of the members of the Management, the Faculty, the student body, the alumni and alumnae, let me extend my warm felicitations to all on this auspicious occasion. May gold turn to platinum and soon herald the centennial. Fr Jerome Stanislaus D’Souza SJ President, Jesuit Conference of South Asia

20 St Joseph’s College of Commerce (SJCC) has successfully completed y years of its service in the eld of higher education. A Golden Jubilee is a celebration of not just a promise but also fullment, not only a sense of achievement and success, but the celebration of competence, compassion, creativity and commitment. I am glad to know that the college has taken a lead in reforming curriculum and syllabus, examination and evaluation patterns, and teaching and learning methods through the Board of Studies, the Academic Council and the Governing Council composed of eminent academicians, industry representatives and notable alumni. In a short span of time, SJCC has been ranked among the top colleges of the country. As a mother cares for her child, this college has nurtured the lives of scores of individuals helping them to move forward as responsible persons in society. What delights me in the faculty of SJCC is their unceasing enthusiasm, their love for their students and their commitment to our vision Fide et Labore (Faith and Toil) in order to create men and women for and with others. What inspires me in our students is their capacity to think intensively and critically to answer the big questions of life and who have hearts burning with genuine love and concern for others. A love for learning, a longing for discovery and a commitment to pursue the truth are the underpinnings of this great institution. e real test of our education at SJCC is “who our students become,” what they value, and what they do later in life and work. SJCC has produced a galaxy of illustrious and eminent alumni and they make us proud. Jesuit education, the depth of learning and imagination, encompasses and integrates intellectual rigour with reection on the experience of reality together with the creative imagination to work toward constructing a more humane, just, sustainable and faith- lled world. May SJCC strive to achieve this purpose as it traverses its path from golden to diamond. 21 A jubilee is an opportunity for us to look back in order to move forward. As we look back over the y years history of St Joseph’s College of Commerce, we feel immensely happy and proud for having imparted quality education to thousands of students. In this Golden jubilee year we celebrate three distinct legacies. e rst, a legacy of achievement. From a very humble beginning in 1972, the college has grown manifold and now has a strength of over 3000 students. SJCC has produced numerous luminaries in various walks of life and, is today recognized as one of the topranking institutes in our country with excellent NAAC grades. It is the only college in the entire state of Karnataka to get a rank within 100 in NIRF for several years in a row. Another noteworthy legacy of this college is that of Cura Personalis. I am proud to state that SJCC has always remained faithful to the Jesuit philosophy of education and worked earnestly to provide holistic formation to the students through personal accompaniment in cognitive, moral, physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions. I am reminded of the quote by His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts”. Our alumni, many of whom were personally accompanied when they were with us, and are now actively engaged in working selessly for the welfare of society are a testimony to this accomplishment. is brings me to the next legacy, a legacy of resilience. Researchers from McKinsey & Company state that resilient organizations display the following characteristics: “A common purpose and clear communication, structures that allow rapid resource allocation and decision making, networks of teams with accountable roles, and a culture that empowers people.” I am proud to state that, these very characteristics have been the hall mark of SJCC throughout its history. By reading the signs of the times and transforming challenges into opportunities for growth, the college has always shown great resilience amidst all adversities and achieved glorious milestones, despite many hurdles. As the college celebrates its Golden Jubilee, it is time to move forward. ere are many more peaks to scale, many more elds to explore and many more people to reach. erefore, even as I congratulate Fr Charles Lasrado SJ, the Principal, the sta, the students, the alumni and the alumnae of SJCC, let me also convey my best wishes to them as they forge ahead towards even a brighter future. I am sure that the Golden Jubilee celebrations will upli the spirit of every Josephite, and inspire them to strive for excellence in all aspects of life. For all that has been, thanks! For all that will be, yes! Rev. Fr. Brian Pereira, SJ Vice President, Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society Rector, St. Joseph’s Institutions Rector’s Message

25 I am indeed happy that St Joseph’s College of Commerce is celebrating the Golden Jubilee of its service to the student community and promising to serve the people of the locality for the years to come. From a humble beginning the college has grown in stature and has a name at the national level. It has produced outstanding scholars, personalities, industrialists, artists and sportsmen. My sincere and hearty congratulations to the Rector, Principal, sta and students on reaching this historical milestone and expressing gratitude to the Almighty for the blessings he has imparted over the past y years. Jubilees are occasions to be celebrated, to recall the marvellous ways in which our St Joseph’s College of Commerce has fullled its mission in imparting education, moral and spiritual values, and discipline to help build leaders who will bring about a culture of peace and love which our society and country needs today. e occasion also provides an opportunity to reect on the past achievements of the school as well as introspect on the preparations to meet the challenges that lie ahead. A Golden Jubilee is indeed a landmark in any situation. It is the time to look back and thank God for the blessings he has given to this great Institution. We always recognise the support we have from our patron St Joseph who has guided us in dicult times. As Psalm 127, verse 1 tells us: “Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good.” Unless the Lord works with us we cannot and will not succeed. If this great Institute has been fruitful in its service, it is the Lord’s hand that has guided it during these eventful 50 years. As we celebrate this Golden Jubilee of the college, it is the most wonderful event that is taking place in our Institution and here it is a well-known Educational College that has rendered yeoman service to humanity. is is in reality great opportunity to be with the much loved college as they celebrate their golden anniversary, and this I am sure it is time to make the day even more memorable for them. Certainly the sta, alumni and well-wishers forward them amazing, sweet wishes on the occasion of golden jubilee. Let me on my behalf extend warm wishes for the golden jubilee as a person much associated with it over the years. When the college moved to the present campus y years ago, it was a humble beginning to enter into a simple building which was originally a hostel now converted into modest classrooms. Fr. Alexis Menezes S.J. was a man of stature and very practical and at the same time a great scholar, wonderful person and very good Principal. He alone worked moved the campus to the new place from Langford Town campus. Dr. (Fr.) Francis Rebello S.J. was a scholar in Economics and great spiritual person who gave the real spirit to the college. He touched the heart of every student and parents and sta and brought much credit to the Institution. He also started the St Joseph’s College of Business Message

26 Administration. Fr. Walter Andrade S.J great thinker, Economist and lover of Sports built the college. With his marvellous memory and good teaching he built the college. He had great love for the poor and started the tailoring school for poor girls around. Other principals that followed him showed the leadership and retained the image of the college as scholarly institution, outstanding in sports and excellent in extracurricular activities. en the student strength was just 750. Now it has exceeded four times the original size. I have wonderful memories as vice principal and principal of this great college. In fact I started my teaching career at St Joseph’s Commerce College as lecturer and vice principal. It was the time I learnt the skills of teaching and administration under the fellow sta lecturers and principal. I returned again to the college as Principal and spent ve years and six months at this post. at was the time when college marginally grew in student strength from a single section to two section Degree College thanks to the initiative of Fr. Walter Andrade. I still cherish what the students said that they missed me for when I was shied to the main college: rst my stories and second leaving this college with the family spirit. Our sports dominance particularly in cricket, basketball and hockey along with the emphasis on close knit bond continued in the years that followed. We had cricketers who represented the university, Karnataka State and India. We had hockey players who represented the state and India and basketball players in the Karnataka team. At the university level we continued to secure ranks and medals. In all the college had the recognition all over. From very humble beginnings in 1972, St Joseph’s College of Commerce has grown leaps and bounds, and now stands tall and proud with impressive buildings, equipped with the latest innovations present day technology, indoor sports activities, beautifully landscaped gardens, basketball court and a student roll of over 2500 students. e college has grown from strength to strength under the able guidance of 8 Principals, and now occupies the place of pride in Bangalore and India. To celebrate 50 years of glories and achievements, various events were organized. On this auspicious day as St Joseph’s College of Commerce celebrates the golden jubilee, I congratulate the Rector and Principal for organising the programme with Eucharist to express gratitude to the Almighty, followed by a public celebration and to recognise those who have contributed to its growth. May the Lord shower his plentiful blessings on this great College and make it shine in the years to come. Dr. Eugene Lobo, SJ Former Principal, SJCC

44 “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” Heartiest congratulations and appreciation to St Joseph’s College of Commerce (Autonomous) for the y years of success tasted at every step due to the y years of hard work that you have put in to achieve that success, for your marvellous journey from becoming an independent institution to carving a niche for yourself to becoming one of the most sought-aer and anointed institutions in Bengaluru. It is commendable how you have persevered through the pressures of expectations, competition and the demands of a dynamic city like Bengaluru without ever losing sight of the essence of education. Our society has changed greatly in the last y years and St Joseph’s College of Commerce has undoubtedly been at the forefront of this change, contributing signicantly to the talent pool of our city, state, nation and globe, and moulding the powerful young minds and character of our youth. SJCC is one of the Jesuit institutions that makes us extremely proud. It is no small feat to have achieved all that you have in the elds of academics, sports, community service, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and to have gained such popularity in a matter of y years. It is one thing to last for y years but to impact lives and society to the extent that you have is not easy to match. I admire SJCC’s approach to making college life fruitful yet cherishable and memorable for students. Celebrate your achievements. All the more, raise the bar at each success to a higher notch. e Institution should continue to challenge itself and its students as well as sta to achieve full human potential and to draw the goodness and the best out of them. You have now moved from the time to prove to the time to improve. is is an opportunity to rethink and revisit mindsets to make your curriculum, pedagogy and practices more contemporary, to keep pace with the changing situations of the times, to renew administration and oer education better suited to the evolving times. I encourage you to equip yourselves with more professional and advanced courses, and collaborations with quality partners to open the world of national and international opportunities to your students. Educational institutions such as yours have the potential to steer the present and the coming generations on to the path of higher levels of education to boost their chances of a successful career. I read this quote - “A true leader is one who creates a favourable environment to bring out the energy and ability of his team. A great leader creates more leaders, and does not reduce the institution to a single person.” e leaders of SJCC have clearly succeeded in accomplishing this as I have been witnessing the alumni/ae of this esteemed institution painting the world over with their prismatic light by being leaders, thinkers, experts, entertainers, and artists, but above all your students have lived and upheld the Jesuit values instilled in them by the Institution. I congratulate and applaud you dear Rev. Dr .Charles Lasrado SJ, the Principal of SJCC and the entire SJCC family who certainly deserve this celebration and more. And to the world-changers and trailblazers of SJCC, I ask for the Lord’s anointing to be upon you forever as it always has been before. Here’s wishing many more milestones to SJCC! Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam! With warm regards Rev Dr Victor Lobo SJ Vice-Chancellor St Joseph’s University Bengaluru

45 St. Joseph’s College of Commerce (Autonomous), Bengaluru, is one of the prestigious and famed institution in India. It holds a high-status and significant place in the field of education. I am glad that this admired and respected institution is celebrating its golden jubilee of impressive and dedicated service to our Nation. The education imparted in this institution is of excellent quality and the public perception about this institution is great. What I like most is that this esteemed institution has been forming men and women who are agents of change, committed to the creation of a society that is just, secular and democratic. The education offered is oriented towards enabling students to strive for both academic and human excellence. The College pursues academic excellence by providing a learning environment that constantly challenges the students and supports the ethical pursuit of intellectual curiosity and ceaseless enquiry. Human excellence is promoted through courses and activities that help students achieve personal integrity and conscientize them against the injustice prevalent in society. The real measure of an institution lies in who their students become, what they value most and what they do later in life and work. The alumni/ae are the face of an institution and its vision in the larger society. They are the good will ambassadors of the institution in the world. St Joseph’s College of Commerce has innumerable such illustrious alumni in every field of society especially in sports and entrepreneurship. This is truly a commendable achievement for an intuition. As SJCC celebrates its golden jubilee, I wish the institution many more years of impressive service to society. May it grow into a might institution that shelters and educates the youth to be men and women for others. With good wishes Fr. Swebert D Silva, SJ Rector & Pro Chancellor St Joseph’s University, Bengaluru

Congratulations are due to all its academic, administrative staff as well as the students - both past and present, on this fantastic journey! For 50 years, SJCC has consistently worked towards fulfilling its goal of providing high-quality education in the field of commerce and management. It is indeed commendable that the institution, having been granted autonomous status by the University Grants Commission in 2005, further strengthened the curriculum of many its programmes, evaluation procedures, and teaching methods thereby resulting in SJCC consistently making it to the list of top 100 colleges in the country. I am also pleased to note that the college has already undergone four cycles of NAAC accreditation receiving A grades and securing A++ grade during its fourth cycle in 2021 under the revised accreditation framework (RAF). It is also heartening to know that SJCC has been ranked 93rd in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2022 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. SJCC has built a rich legacy as an institution providing holistic education over the years. The true reflection of the quality of any educational institution is in its alumni. It is therefore creditable that the alumni of SJCC, many of whom have made a mark for themselves in their chosen areas of calling, have steadfastly adhered to and spread the values they imbibed from their alma mater. I am sure that SJCC has several exciting and novel initiatives and programmes planned for the coming years. I wish this prestigious institution the very best in all its future endeavours. REGISTRAR
