Souvenir2023

Only as I started writing this piece did I realise that I was only the fourth batch in St. Joseph’s College of Commerce (SJCC) in its current incarnation. Just as I was beginning to feel ancient I was reassured by the fact that St. Joseph’s College as an institution in Bengaluru (then Bangalore) dates back to 1882 and the Commerce wing opened in 1949. It would simply be true to say that my ve years in SJCC following ve in St. Joseph’s Indian High School (Bangalore) were truly formative. I oen joke with Jesuit priests I have known that I could almost qualify as one of them as their formation period is not much longer. e academic and sporting achievements of our college are legendary and I am sure much documented in this volume. I always prefer to focus on the values SJCC instilled in us. Values of equality, justice, fraternity and social purpose - all of which are drawn as much from values that most faiths propagate as from the preamble of the Indian constitution and indeed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. e way in which this happened is equally important - not through hectoring and indoctrination but in a completely experiential way. A huge factor was the diversity in the student population which SJCC consciously ensures. For the richer students who came from elite schools, it was their rst experience of having to deal on a day to day basis with children from poorer and middle class homes. e upper class kids (who are also mostly also upper caste) for the rst time had to interact with lower caste children. e more elite English speaking students had to suddenly deal with peers who mainly spoke Kannada or maybe Tamil. As most schools in Bangalore from which SJCC recruited its students were single sex schools, relating with the opposite sex was a whole new experience. All of the mixing happened in a seamless manner. If an elite student wanted to run for the Students Union elections, he had to understand how to relate to his classmates from a working class background, to boys and girls, to Hindus, Muslims, Christians and Jains, to literally the diversity that is India. e National Service Scheme, the inter- collegiate festivals, the sports eld were all places which would naturally mix students from dierent backgrounds up and expose us to new realities. I am belabouring this because in today’s India these very constitutional values are at risk and what we experienced in SJCC could help us to root ourselves in the values we imbibed. e very foundations of our democracy are under assault and all independent institutions like media, judiciary and civil society are being compromised. Our society is being polarized particularly on grounds of religion. In order to unify Hindu votes, which are historically divided along caste lines, there is a systematic attack on religious minorities, particularly Muslims but also Christians. It is particularly unfortunate that even some of our own college mates who have had the benet of studying in a Christian institution which never imposed its own religious preferences on its students are now champions of the bizarre argument which rests on the Hindu majority’s minority complex. I hope that Josephites from SJCC and beyond will draw from the deep and rich well of conscience that our college armed us with and help save India from the perilous path that we are taking. A path that is destroying us socially, economically and politically. A path that is violent with our own citizens and with our neighbours. A path that is based on fear and hatred. A path that is not Indian and certainly not SJCC’s. Wishing our college and current and past students the fortitude to stand up and speak out for the India we cherish - only this courage and sacrice can chart us to safe waters during these turbulent times. Mr.Salil Shetty Batch of 1976-81 Former Secretary General of the human rights organization Amnesty International Message

50 Glorious Years! SJCC is now celebrating 50 Glorious years of its founding. As we look back we can say with pride that thousands have proudly graduated from the college, to win and spread the Colleges’ renown. What truly makes any educational institution memorable and cherished is how its Alumni have fared in the big wide world. Our Alumni have contributed tremendously to making India and the world a better place for all, enriched society with their brilliance and leadership and contributed enormously to the social, economic and cultural development of India and the world. St Joseph’s College of Commerce is a very special college. It has an open, transparent, collegial culture where learning is respected, open debate encouraged, accomplishment cherished and above all, respect for society and all sections of society is practiced as the fundamental principle of the educational experience. e focus on the all round development of students, development of their personality, physique through sports, so skills, based on a great value system and a disciplined approach, ensures that any student graduating out of the college is welcomed with open arms and respect by all sections of society. e faculty and management work intensely to imbibe in students all the skills and qualities of heart and mind to succeed in life. It is indeed a life changing experience which sustains us throughout our life. All of us remember our experiences in college with great joy and happiness, remember with gratitude the faculty, sta and the Jesuit Fathers who made Men and Women for All from the very young, hopeful, energetic teenagers who so eagerly entered the portals of the college. We carry the name of our college with us all our lives, always conscious that we owe a debt of gratitude to our College and those who have gone before us and whose achievements, sacrifices and adherence to the value system in times of adversity, make our life journey easier. We deeply understand our responsibility to add our contribution to the ever increasing bank of achievement. When we are faced with dilemmas, the need to adhere to the Josephite Value System, the need to be honest and behave with integrity, to always do our best, will be uppermost in our minds. e responsibility of being an alumni of our college always dominates our thinking because we feel that we are very special and privileged. As we celebrate 50 years, we need to rededicate ourselves to our Alma mater, remember our value system, be grateful for what we have got, honour the achievements and sacrifices of our peers, vow to never fall short and give back in abundance to make the future better for all and win and spread our Colleges renown, for SJCC will always remain in our heart. In giving back we get so much because our college is so much a part of us and will always remain a part of us. ank you SJCC, our Jesuit Fathers, our teachers and the sta for giving us so much to cherish and remember, for making good citizens of all of us and for making us Men and Women for All! 103 Fiy glorious years ago, in 1972, I was in the rst batch of students to start college education at the then new campus of the very prestigious St. Joseph’s College of Commerce on Brigade Road, Bangalore. I completed my senior Cambridge exams in December 1971 from St. Joseph’s Boys High School, with mathematics as my elective as I wanted to pursue education in Engineering. is qualied me for direct admission to the rst-year undergraduate course. is being the transition year, where the pre-university course was altered to a 2- year course from the earlier 1-year study, post which we could seek admission to the 3-year under graduation study B. Com. I had no knowledge on accounts and B. Com. related subjects at that time. Fr. Menezes, who was the principal, interviewed me prior to getting admission. He gave us 2 days to prepare for an entrance exam to evaluate admitting us for B.Com. I am grateful to my elder brother Irfan Razack, coached me and my other classmate from school – Nadeem Ahmed for this entrance test. I am indeed thankful to Fr. Menezes, who saw in us the capability of pursuing B.Com. and granted both of us admission at SJCC. I will never forget this college because of the wonderful memories that have been imprinted in my mind. I can vouch that the nest 3 years of my life were spent at the campus of SJCC and Brigade Road. Our class had a small strength of 28 students, most of who had either passed out of PUC, or the ones that took a gap year and joined the degree course. I remember our professors: Prof. Amanullah Khan, who was more a friend than a teacher. He was also in command of the National Social Service division, for which I had enrolled. e best 3 days of my life were at the NSS camp at the Govt. College in Singasandra, Bangalore. Prof. S. P. Iyengar, taught us Accountancy. Prof. Narayan Rao brought life into Economics and got me interested in it, a subject that I earlier detested. Our English teacher, Prof. Govinda Rao, was also more of a friend, with whom I spent greater time outside college than learning English inside the classroom. Prof. Fr. Avelin taught us English Literature for a year. When he started writing on the blackboard, almost everyone in class sneaked out of the rear door to visit Brigade Road!! I moved forward and continued life with what was taught at SJCC in the years 1972-1975. is education and learning imparted by my Alma Mater gave me the opportunity to grow as an individual and made me what I am today – successful. I owe it all to this esteemed institution and our great teachers. Even today I continue to uphold the reputation and embrace the glory of SJCC. I am sure there are scores of students who have taken benet from the Alma Mater and have become highly successful people. I would like to express my warmest gratitude for making me today what I am. I am thankful to the SJCC Old Students Association for presenting me with the Magis Award for Signicant Achievement 2022. ank you. 104 As SJCC completes 50 years of its glorious existence as an independent institution, I take this opportunity to wish everyone connected with this institution a very “HAPPY GOLDEN JUBILEE” e very mention of SJCC brings a rush of pleasant memories and, as I look back, the ve years I spent in the college between 1981 and 1986 have been of immense importance in my life. I dedicate, without hesitation, much of what I am today to the learnings I imbibed at SJCC. e uniqueness of this college lay in the professional as well as humane nature of the Principal, VP and professors who used to take extra care to nurture each of the students passing through its portals, ensuring all round development in them. e contribution of the college to character and capacity building is exemplary, and this is proved by the stupendous achievements of its students in all elds and walks of life. e college motto “Fide et Labore” standing for “faith and toil” gets strongly enshrined in students and holds them in good stead as they step out of the college and carve out a niche for themselves in the outside world. Long live SJCC. From a proud SJCCite. Vinay M. Tonse (1986) MD & CEO SBI Mutual Funds Mumbai Message

I am extremely delighted to note that the St. Joseph’s College of Commerce is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year. On this happy occasion I deem it an honour and privilege to pen this message as an alumni of this prestigious college to be published in the Golden Jubilee Souvenir. e Digital Revolution sweeping across the globe has transformed all sectors of the economy and we have seen disruptions taking place in the way business is being conducted around the world. Today commerce students have global opportunities with standardised accounting practises being adopted by many countries around the world by using the International Financial Reporting Standards which are globally accepted by all stake holders. e new generation students can now specialise in Forensic Accounting and Fraud Detection, Valuation, Insolvency and Bankruptcy, Cyber Risk Management, Mergers and Acquisitions, Investment Advisory, Start-up support services and provide a host of Business Advisory services to many global organisations. Lifelong education and skill development are absolutely essential to survive in this fast changing business environment. With diverse skill sets and greater technical acumen, commerce students in India can now explore global opportunities and build exciting careers in accounting and commerce. e current generation of students need to adapt to changes happening around the globe and explore new opportunities that looks attractive and exciting. We are in a period of rapid change and in the next few years, the role of many commerce students will have to keep pace with the gradual digitization of business and help them navigate technologies, systems and data digitization. I am delighted to note that our esteemed College is conducting the closing ceremony of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations on 19th November, 2022. 106 First and foremost, I consider this opportunity to pay a tribute to my alma mater, a God-sent and, therefore, I’m eternally indebted to the Almighty I entered this hallowed turf as a lanky teenager more than four decades ago with not a worry in the world – no regrets for the past nor any fears for the future. e only thing noticeable was perhaps the spring in my stride and a chest bloated with pride. With a lot of justication, of course, Aer all, I had got admitted into an institution of such eminence which everyone strives to enter but very few succeed. I was one of those lucky ones. My alma mater was my universe for ve full years – a place of worship as well as a playground for fun and frolic. But it was not all success right through for back benchers like me. I have experienced the highs and lows of growing up, enjoyed the hosannas and the heartburns as a student and lived life to the full as any normal student.Yes, our generation was blessed to have teachers who were not merely scholars and well versed in teaching academics. e institution and the Teachers were much larger, larger than life, if I may add, in imparting the values of life, the importance of existence and, above all, the need to grow up in a healthy way, both personally and professionally. Institution taught me to imagine without any fear, to believe without any hesitation and to nally achieve without any compromise. Above all, you showed me that the world is full of possibilities. Your holistic curriculum gave me a life skill I will always treasure. ese values have stood by me in good and bad times and has helped me achieve whatever little I have so far in my life – a professional Chartered Accountant, Qualied law Graduate and the Resolution Professional I have also held various high positions in many organisations and associations, including my current stint as the Treasurer and ocial spokesperson of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. If not for my teachers and my alma mater, I may not be what I’m today. As I am grateful to you, I am so much more grateful to my parents, my family members and friends for introducing me to you – one of the best decisions they have taken for me. As I write these lines, a memorable quote by the famous American historian Adam Henry comes to mind: “A teacher aects eternity. You can never tell where a teacher’s inuence stops.” Once again thank you for this opportunity. On this occasion of the SJCC golden Jubilee celebrations wishing every Josephite a bright and prosperous future. 107 Respected Father Dr. Charles Lasrado SJ Principal, St Joseph College of Commerce, Bangalore I would like to extend my warm greetings to the management, faculty and Students on the occasion of Golden Jubilee Year of the institution. I am extremely delighted to see that SJCC has evolved over the years and has grown to become one of top ranking colleges in the country. From a 400 students college at the time of my graduation in 1987 to almost 3500+ students, the college today boasts of a ne infrastructure facility. Over the last few years, i have had an opportunity to reconnect with the college as a member of the OSA Managing committee team and to see from close quarters its functioning, its holistic approach to academics, sports and co circular activities and I’m mighty impressed with the passion and dedication of the faculty members, brilliance and energy levels of students and over all vibrancy in the campus.. Kudos to all the stakeholders who have helped maintain this high level of positivity. e college has besides its regular academics is working on various programs and initiatives to help equip the students and to align them with the present needs of commerce and industry be it technical skills, digital skills, and so skills. It is also very heartening to see that the management is making every eorts to help needy students with pursuing their academic career despite severe economic challenges faced by the families of these students. Several hundred students have beneted from their eorts over the years. e support extended by many Alumni is noteworthy. My experience at SJCC taught me one fundamental thing – life is full of opportunities if you know how to identify and pursue them. It has helped transform me as an individual and strengthened in me core values of life, self-condence and to look beyond the horizon. It provides access to a large network of talented individuals and support system that few colleges can match. Even to this day, it continues to full its vision and mission. I’m eternally grateful to the institution. Best Wishes! CA Chetan Venugopal President Old student Association SJCC Message

It is heartening to see my college completing 50 years of existence. I have the fortune of being the student from the rst batch Class 73. When we moved in from Langford road to Brigade road, the excitement was very high being close to the most popular street. I have been in touch with the college since last 5+ years and have been a frequent visitor since last year to start a new OSA fund to educate bright students from economically weaker families. e spontaneous response that I got from the college to give preference to such student and to waive o 40% fee showcased the interest of college in promoting such children. I remember the day I joined the college in 1969 and was surprised to see my new friends from all sections of society and the environment of friendliness and discipline. I witnessed similar situation 50 years later. e high standards of teachers in providing support for all round development has in fact improved. e opportunity to play various games and sports has increased. e fee structure is far more aordable than most other colleges with no compromises on imparting knowledge. ere are many reasons for my success in life but amongst them the role of my SJCC stands out. My four years in college transformed me into a condent young man to take on the challenges of the world. I congratulate the past and current sta and management for the golden jubilee and wish that the college will grow much bigger and continue to serve the society. Best wishes CA F R Singhvi First Batch Class 73 Joint Managing Director Sansera Engineering Limited Message

College is a bridge between the school and one’s career. It is the pedestal which preps us for life with academics, sports and cultural tutoring. It is a platform to turn dreams into realities. It is a paradigm transition to adolescence. College is the edice to one’s career success and overall personal development. e perceived fame and glory one achieves is undisputedly an outcome of the grooming at college. at we have been successful in our life is in a large measure the result of our moorings in SJCC. e college imbued the completeness in us. It strengthened us to face the challenges of life. It made us bold to voice out. It instilled the ‘integrity in’ and ‘passion for’ work. Personally, it taught me to keep my foot on ground; but head held high. Our college has been an extended family mirroring many of the homely feelings. Our college nursed and tutored us like a caring mother; disciplined us like a father; soothened us like a brother; pampered us like a sister; and thus allowed us to rediscover ourselves in a world outside our homes. Our College life has been a repository of unforgettable memories. e initial days of settling down; knowing the world beyond classroom; the cultural fests to unleash our capabilities; the encouragement for sports kindling the spirit within us; the debates which fuelled the oratory skills; the leadership traits through the college elections; the attitude of being ‘super humans’ during our nal years; emotional moments of having to part with this temple of happiness and knowledge - are some of the few (among the innumerable) which I can recollect. We owe all these wonderful moments of our life to this esteemed institution. What makes our college special? ere are innumerable contributories to this uniqueness. Our college is blessed in many ways that distinguishes it from others. (a)Atmosphere and spirit of our college: e ethos of our college has made it one of its kind. Our College is committed to the advancement of learning; dedicated to curricular and non-curricular activities, creative in thought and action, and productive both at the individual and public space. e freedom of action and spirit of accommodation has made our college a place with a dierence. e student expression was never censored. (b) Phenomenal faculty: ere is no deity superior to the Guru. e mastery, excellence and superiority of the faculties in our college remains unparalleled. e dexterity exhibited by our teachers always inspired us. ey were our role models. ey set standards which we innately wished we could also achieve in life. (c)Peers: Our College has nurtured some of the nest brains and muscles. e competition (in academic or co-curricular activities) was erce. e pressure to perform made us agile and alert. Message

e balancing of pride and humility is undisputedly a take-away from all my peers. (d)Administration: College Administration was the live link between the teachers, management and students. A positive relationship within the college community was always in evidence. Disputes were resolved dispassionately but within the rule book. (e)Sports: As a cricket player myself, I have always been passionate about sporting activities in the college. e encouragement provided by the college moulded us to outshine many and smoothen our rough edges. e number of Josephites who have worn the Indian jersey in various forms of sports speaks volumes about our College. e ethics deeply ingrained in us have helped us to be better human beings. Our faith in ourselves and our capabilities have been enhanced. Much beyond our profession, we have inherited the value systems which have made us travel beyond our imagination. e journey in the college was gratifying, satisfying and enchanting. e life beyond the college has always drawn inspiration from the learnings in our college. We carry many vivid memories. On any get together or in solitude, we fondly recall the College days - to rejoice and refresh. Every recollection of these memories only kindles the desire to relive the college life all over again. CA Padamchand Khincha “Heartiest congratulations to SJCC on its Golden Jubilee! I was fortunate to study at SJCC under the guidance of skilled and experienced faculty who supported me on all fronts whether it was academics or sports. I wish the college continued success in the future.” Regards, Devdutt Padikkal Indian Cricketer Batch - 2021

At the outset, I would like to congratulate all the current students, alumni, sta, parents and everyone in the community who has been associated with St Joseph’s College of Commerce on this tremendous milestone of 50 years of service in the eld of education. e impact of an institution like St Joseph’s cannot be fully measured as it not only produces skilled graduates whom are industry-ready but more importantly ne humans being well grounded with morals and ethics that are so short in supply in the world today . I fondly remember my years at the college as not only foundational and key to my career but a period when I made friends for life and got a chance to explore many activities beyond academics that truly shaped my perspective and helped me deal with many complex situations in life. I shall always be eternally grateful to my alma mater for all that I learnt and wish this truly special institution the very best for the next millennia and beyond ! Rishi Pardal CEO United Breweries It gives me immense joy and pleasure to respond to the request of the Principal of the St Joseph’s College of Commerce to write a message for the Souvenir which is to be published in commemoration of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of our college. is Souvenir is a token of gratitude for all those who have worked tirelessly in making this institution what it is, a tribute to the past, and to all those who have bought it fame and glory. I do recall the time that I was admitted to this institution, a young 16 year old, a little anxious and hopeful that I would follow in the footsteps of, in the words of Fr Gavan - Duy, ‘ A thousand such who have proudly gone before us to win and spread our college’s renown’. I also do recall with gratitude the many teachers who played a very large role in making me who I am today, My then Principal, Late Fr Walter Andrade SJ for instilling in me the values of ‘Faith & Toil’ our college motto and for those numerous glasses of orange squash and potato chips at his oce. It is true that every batch that graduates stands on the shoulders of the one preceding it and this is only possible as the institution over the past ve decades has only believed in continuous excellence always, be it in churning out sportsmen or business leaders who are making the world a better place for all.I wish the students, teachers and the management of St Joseph’s College of Commerce the very best on their Golden Jubilee and for the decades to come. Wishing them every success in all that they do…….. Faith & Toil! Shashi Kiran Lewis

MESSAGE There's so much to say about SJCC... It's a family of people, both staff and students alike, who have propelled me to explore, deep dive and find my path. The atmosphere was always fun, electric, welcoming and accepting of one's dreams. Especially with Rev. Fr. Daniel Fernandez at the helm who was ever so open to extracurricular activities and trying new things! Yes academics is important but the key lesson I learnt at St. Joseph's was to be the best you can be, a champion to the world outside! Someone whose focus is to 'will the good of the other!' 15 years on I still find myself reminiscing with batchmates and present students about all the madness that we shared at SJCC. And when you meet any ex Josephite, you'll just know what it means to be a Josephite. What's that old cliche again? The one we've all heard a thousand times? "You can never take Joseph's, out of a Josephite!" Seems true to me! Regards, Atul Kattukaran Director | 1st December Films https://1stdecember.com/

Golden Jubilee Message Hearty Congratulations to all the faculty, sta, and the Jesuits on our Golden Jubilee celebrations. As a Josephite with a decade plus education stint in both school- St. Josephs Indian High School, and college -St. Josephs College of Commerce, I feel blessed by the Almighty and grateful to Josephite institutions for deeply embedding life-nourishing values of respect for all fellow human beings, fairness in all social interactions, and integrity in all professional dealings. Whatever success I have achieved in my life is to a large extent attributable to my learnings in Josephite institutions. Over decades, the core of values that SJCC stands for remains intact, as I have seen the same cherished values engraved in my son who also was fortunate to have the benet of Josephite education. I wish our college a long, bright, and successful future, with rapid expansion that can touch larger and larger number of impressionable teenage lives as they contribute to building a caring, responsible and fair society in which all human potential can ourish. 117 50 years! Fiy glorious years! I can’t believe that it’s been 34 years since I le SJCC. From hanging around at the cycle stand (I’m told it’s no longer just a cycle stand anymore!), to playing basketball, cheering our cricket and hockey teams, and hiding in the Culture Club room when we wanted to bunk class, memories come blazing back! I owe a lot to my alma mater. It was here I honed my communication skills – with our annual trips to cultural events across the country meant reciting elocution pieces from Chennai to Pilani and Delhi to iruvananthapuram, sometimes losing and mostly winning! Our annual play directed by Mr. Govind Rao was a tentpole event for the college and we were the only college institution at that time that held multiple professional shows. Mr. Narsimha Rao taught me the joys of accounting and till date, I thank him every time I complete working on my annual budgets. I’m an excel end and it is SJCC that planted those roots. “What’s the answer, sir?” we’d oen ask him. “What do you want the answer to be, my friend?” would be his reply. Fascinating! I hated taxation classes and used every opportunity to miss them – play practise, dumb charades practise (hey…try doing “are malapropisms paradoxical” in nine seconds without practise!) anything to miss Income Tax! “You’re going to fail, my friend” Mr. Narasimha Rao would say. I took that on as a challenge. I promised him I’d top the class in Income Tax at the end of the year. And I did. And that’s when I learnt that I could anything if I simply put my mind to it. Fide et Labore, Faith and Toil. Indeed, that is what SJCC taught me. Work hard, don’t worry about the results, for they will come. I’m so proud to be part of these golden years of SJCC, as I am sure are the students reading this today. I wish SJCC many lifetimes more, so you can continue to seed young minds with knowledge and wisdom, learning and insight. ank you. Ms Dilshad Master Director- Himalayan Outward Bound Message

Greetings Dear Father, St Joseph's College of Commerce has been a turning point which helped me write a brand new chapter in my life. It is not just an Institution but a home which has helped thousands to achieve their goals which at one point of time seemed impossible for students like me. The positive energy that you feel from within when you enter the College gates and the support rendered by the Staff is unmatched and really special. St Joseph's College of Commerce is the one and the only reason because of which I realised my dream of joining the Army. A dream which otherwise was far from my reach. Today, as I proudly don the Uniform and walk with my head held high, I stand ever grateful to the pillars of this great institution which helped me realise my potential and gave me an opportunity to prove my worth as a responsible citizen of this country. These pillars are pillars of strength and hope which you will need as a support to lift yourself in difficult times. These pillars are always there to help you at every point of your life when you need to hold on to something. I whole heartedly thank these Pillars of strength and hope. Yes, my sincere thanks to my dear teachers of St Joseph's College of Commerce who have moulded the lives of thousands of students over the years and have contributed in building a wonderful family of Proud Josephites who excel in all that they do and more importantly when they do it for the good of the society. Jai Hind Thank you Lt Col Christo Sudeep Dsouza

It is my honour and privilege to oer my warmest wishes to St. Joseph’s College of Commerce on this grand occasion of its Golden Jubilee. SJCC has been home to many of us with our best memories and happy days. Fide Et Lobore is a core value that drives us even today and has instilled in us ethics and morals to conduct our lives. SJCC has contributed to the world of education and made such an impact that we are proud to be alumni of this institution. With the help of Shramana Samskurti Trust, an unused building in Channaveeranahalli, Doddaballpur Taluk was identified to open a community library. The NSS wing of SJCC volunteered in refurbishing the library.
