67 Message It is a matter of great pride to know that St Joseph’s Commerce College is celebrating fifty golden years of faith and toil. Undoubtedly, SJCC is one of the most reputed colleges in India that offers commerce and business education to the students, keeping at its core, the three pillars of Jesuit education namely, academic excellence, character formation and social concern. The college has built a rich legacy over the years by imparting quality education and making education affordable even to the economically weaker sections of the society. The college has produced outstanding alums who are contributing to the society and businesses nationally as well as globally. I am glad to know that this institute, which is part of the larger Josephite family, has been greatly successful in inculcating the Josephite spirit among all the studentspresent and past. The Josephite spirit is a bundle of many virtues: acceptance of all cultures and beliefs, compassion for the socially deprived people, promotion of justice, striving for excellence, care for the mother earth and above all the spirit of Magiswhich means doing the more, the better, the greater. Perhaps, that is why every Josephite is proud to exclaim: “Once a Josephite, always a Josephite.” The motto of this college is Faith and Toil: faith in almighty God complemented by hard work. The focal point of all hard work and study is excellence for service. While students may cherish their personal goals of finding a lucrative corporate career by hard work, the Alma mate always places before them a life norm: Life is only lived well when it is joyfully lived in the service of others. I congratulate SJCC fraternity on the Golden Jubilee Celebrations and sincerely wish that the college soon becomes a multidisciplinary university. Rev.Dr .Manoj D’Souza, SJ Director, St Joseph’s Institute of Management Message

70 Message to mark the 50th year of SJCC I would first like to congratulate Fr Charles Lasrado SJ, Principal, the staff and students of St Joseph’s College of Commerce on the celebration of its Golden Jubilee. Instituted in 1972 the College has provided opportunities to youngsters who wanted to enter the professional arena and participate as equals in the nation building project envisioned by our Founding Fathers. The college has laid a benchmark in churning minds who stand on values that align with Jesuit ethos rather than being simply diluted by commercial interests. It is indeed a matter of satisfaction that St Joseph’s College of Commerce has successfully striven for the empowerment of young women and men for the last fifty years in the field of academics, co-scholastic enrichment or sports. The contribution of the alumni towards the social, economic, political and cultural life of the country is also commendable. The growth of the college has been organic as it has steadily established itself as a leading institution with various academic distinctions to its credit. As we look at the 50 years that have passed with enthusiasm and the future with hope, I wish the college will continue the mission of creating young men and women who are conscious of their moral responsibility to the cause of social justice. Fr . Jerald Dsouza SJ Director St Joseph’s College of Law Bengaluru

71 I am indeed happy to know that St. Joseph’s College of Commerce (Autonomous), Bengaluru, is celebrating its Golden Jubilee in the third week of November 2022. This prestigious institution has completed its fifty years of excellent and outstanding service in the field of higher education by fostering student transformation. Besides academic excellence, this institution, true to the Ignatian-Jesuit characteristic of cura personalis meaning ‘to care for the whole person’, has unswervingly provided a holistic and integral formation by shaping the learners into responsible citizens for and with others. This institution has empowered especially students from marginalized and underprivileged communities. The motto of the institution Fide et Labore has certainly inspired countless youngsters to be witnesses to the values of hard work, inclusivity, integrity, justice, and secularism among many others. On this joyous occasion, the Principal of Loyola College (Autonomous), Chennai, which is a fellow Jesuit institution, extends his greetings and good wishes to the Jesuit management, professors, staff, students, and all stakeholders of the college for the success of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations. May this celebration give way to bigger successes in the years to come. God bless. Rev. Dr Thomas Amirtham, SJ Principal 04th November 2022

87 Message “You must have been warned against letting the Golden Hours slip by; but some of them are GOLDEN only because we let them slip by”. – James M Barrie. Being an alumni and staff member of this prestigious institution, I am proud and delighted to put my thoughts together and to commend the immense contribution made by St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, as it reaches the milestone of 50 Golden Years. True to its motto, “Fide et Labore” the college has strived ever to get best out of each students in the area of Academics, Character building and Social Concern. The college has looked beyond its curricular and shaped the lives of thousands of students in the areas of Education, Sports, Dramatics, Film industry, Political Field, Policy making and many more. The present Superior General of the Society of Jesus, Fr. Arturo Sosa, on “Jesuit Higher Education in the Global Context” says, “the true value of a Jesuit College is to be found in forming men and women who care for the world, the planet, and human life itself, and who bear a sense of responsibility as global citizens who contribute to a project of social transformation ‘for other’. The College should not be a place to merely pile up knowledge; the goal of the intellectual apostolate is to seek wisdom” I am sure, St. Joseph’s College of Commerce strives towards this ‘social transformation process’. It has created global citizens who have contributed in greater depth to the environment and to the human life itself. Being the core value of Jesuit Education, the college has always given space to the poor and the deserving section of the society, in imparting knowledge and forming them into future citizens who care for each other. My sincere appreciation and congratulations to all the Principals, Faculty members and the management team who have contributed immensely in the growth of this institution over the years. As St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, celebrates the Golden Jubilee, the ‘years slip by’ may become Diamond, Platinum, Centenary, Quasquicentennial, Sesquicentennial…. God bless. Fr. Roshan David Pereira SJ Director St. Joseph’s Pre-university College, Bengaluru.
