new PLASTIC NOT
SO FANTASTIC
For a month each year, Cape Town’s Wavescape
festival brings focus to our precious oceans
with beach clean-ups, conservation events,
and panel discussions with thought leaders
talking science, sustainability, aesthetics,
adventure, and activism. Plus, there’s always
a bevy of films with a surf and sea focus. This
year’s festival includes a screening of Plastic
China, Wang Jiuliang’s 2016 documentary set
in a small recycling factory that reprocesses
imported waste. While it grapples with the
global crisis around plastic and what to do with
it, the film explores the issue with incredible
intimacy, focusing on two families struggling
to survive in a wasteland of refuse shipped in
from faraway lands. The film is showing at The
Labia on 6 December, while on 8 December,
there’s a screening of Bethany Hamilton:
Unstoppable, a documentary about a surfing
legend who returned to the sport after losing
an arm in a shark attack when she was 13.
