The Colour Boxes

Color 1 is the Foreground Color, and is always black when you
open Paint or open a different Paint page.

Color 2 is the Background Color, and is always white when you
open Paint or open a different Paint page.

To change color, make sure that its Color box is in focus. If it is not, simply
click on it and then, in the Palette, click on the color that you want.

When you have an active shape or some active text on your page, hovering
your cursor over a color in the Color Palette gives the shape or text the color
temporarily. You can click to apply the change if you like it.

Eraser tool Eraser tool

The Eraser tool is used to erase a part of your drawing.

The ‘eraser tool’ is simple to use. Just click on the eraser
icon to select it, and then click on the part of the image
that you want to erase. ‘Erasing’ changes the erased part
of the image back to the background color of the image file.
This is usually white. But it can be changed to other colors
using the ‘color palette’.

Saving Image

Saving is done frequently to
make sure that you do not
accidentally lose your work.
For this in MS-Paint, choose
File tab and click on Save.
This saves all of the changes
you made on the picture since
the last time you saved. For

Lesson

14 Introduction to Multimedia

Introduction

Today, people commonly use speech, sounds, music, text, graphics, animation,
and video to convey message. There are all different types of media (the
term media is the plural of medium), and each has traditionally been used to
present certain types of message. Long ago, people discovered that messages
are more effective (i.e., the audience understands and remembers them more
easily) when they are presented through a combination of different media.
This combination is known as the term multimedia where more than one
type of medium is used at the same time.
The term “Multimedia” is made up of two words: ‘Multi’ and ‘Media’.
‘Multi’ means many and ‘Media’ means all the modes of communication,
such as sounds, graphics, animations, text, video clips, etc. Computer
with the capability of processing various modes of communication is called
a Multimedia computer.

Multimedia

Multimedia Computer System

A multimedia computer system is a computer operated system having
capability to integrate two or more types of media (text, graphics, image,
audio, and video) for generating, storage, representation, manipulation,

Approved by Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur 155

Vedanta LET’S LOG in Computer Science _ Book 6

and access of multimedia information. In general, data size of multimedia
information is much larger than textual information because representation
of graphics, animation, audio, or video media in digital form requires much
larger number of bits than it is required for representation of plain text. Due
to this, multimedia computer systems require:

1. Faster CPU (for quicker processing of large amount of data)
2. Larger storage devices (for storing large data files),
3. Larger main memory (for running programs with large data size),
4. Good graphics and
5. Audio I/O devices (for playing any audio)

Advantages of Multimedia

Teaching and learning can be more interesting and interactive.
Multimedia helps to share, views, ideas, and information in more
effective and attractive ways.
Multimedia helps to make advertisement more attractive.
Multimedia can be used to clarify any concept.
Multimedia presents messages by adding interesting sounds and
visuals.
Complex problem can be presented in a simplified way.
Game and movies can be made more interesting.
Multimedia helps students to learn themselves using multimedia CDs.

Components of Multimedia

It is important to use all components of multimedia effectively to use
multimedia as an effective means to convey information. The various

156 Approved by Curriculum Development Centre, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur

Vedanta LET’S LOG in Computer Science _ Book 6
components that constitute multimedia are text, graphics, sound,
animations, and video.

Text

Text is the primary component of multimedia. Alphanumeric and special
characters are used to present information in the from of text form. Most of
the information is conveyed through the text. It can be combined with other
media in powerful and meaningful ways to present information.

Graphics horse

Graphics is an important component of
multimedia because a picture is a powerful
way to illustrate information. For example, in a
multimedia application for educating children,
if photograph of a horse is displayed along with
its textual description, it illustrates the message
much more effectively. Without the photograph,
it becomes very difficult to explain how a horse
looks like using only text.

Sound

Sound is yet another important component of multimedia because in many
cases, sound can substantially reinforce our understanding of information
presented in other ways. In some cases, sound is the only way to provide
desired information. For example, in a multimedia application for education,
voice explanation can be added in an animation clip to describe its content.
It is nearly impossible to provide an accurate description of horse’s neigh,
lion’s roar, or bird’s chirp using text and graphics only. Sound helps in such
context.

Animation

Animation is an important component of multimedia because just as a picture
is a powerful way to illustrate information. A small animation clip is even
more powerful and useful for illustrating concepts involving movement. It is
used commonly in advertisements, cartoon films, video games, etc.

Advertisements Cartoon films Video games
Video
Video

Like animation, computer video deals with
recording and display of a sequence of
images at a reasonable speed to create an
impression of movement. Each individual
image of a sequence of images is called
a frame. Like animation, video is also
an important component of multimedia
because it is very useful for illustrating
concepts that involve movement.

Multimedia Software

The following table lists the different multimedia software and their uses in
various application fields.

Uses of Multimedia

Multimedia creates a multi-sensory learning environment. Education,
business, advertising, games, movies, medicine, virtual reality, etc. are
some of the major fields benefitted by the impact of multimedia.

Education

In education, multimedia is used to produce
computer-based training courses (CBTs)
and reference books like encyclopedia.
A CBT lets the user go through a series
of presentations, text about a particular
topic, and associated illustrations in
various information formats. Educational
CDs are available for different subjects.

Playing Games some educational CDs

The on screen 3-D games we play in computer are examples of multimedia.
Some examples of computer games are: Call of Duty, Need for Speed,
Batman Arkham Asylum, Battlefield Bad Company, Tomb Raider, Mafia 2,
FIFA, Angry Birds, etc.

Video games 159

Business

Businesspersons use multimedia to display their product to their customers
in the form of attractive and interesting presentations.

Advertising

Multimedia is extensively used in advertisement. By
the use of multimedia, the products and service are
advertised among different users in an attractive and
systematic way.

Watching Movies Advertising

All the cartoons and animated movies that we watch are made with the help
of multimedia computer.

The Lion King Clara IceAge Angry bird

Medicine

In medicine, doctors can be trained by showing at a virtual surgery or they
can simulate how the human body is affected by diseases caused by viruses
and bacteria, and then develop techniques to prevent it.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

Multimedia is made up of two words: ‘Multi’ and ‘Media’.
‘Multi’ means many and ‘Media’ means all the modes of communication.
