Brief description of responsibilities:

3. Courses initiated/innovations instituted/other teaching contributions
(include new courses initiated, special lectures in other courses, generation of
teaching aids, activities supportive of teaching, student achievements, other)
The Fall semester instigated a new project, "Looking Through Glassworks to
Appreciate the World of Art," that I piloted with the History and
Appreciation of the Art-Crafts Honors class. This project was possible
through the 2018 Ottilie Schillig Grant, allowing The History and
Appreciation of the Art-Crafts class to expand into the glass realm of art
by nurturing the students with a repertoire of glass kiln-forming skills. The
pilot proved overall that the project was 80% successful with twenty out of
twenty-five projects displayed productively. With this outcome, a
workshop was attended to achieve a more efficient success rate.
This semester autonomy played a roll in all of the classes through
researching designs for specific projects. I compelled students to expand
in their own personal fondness of design through researching patterns and
stencils online to create their own creations leading to successful projects,
instead of restraining their ability to be creative through the works of
others. This provided for a more creative approach to personal
gratification.
I honor the students through an awards exhibition at the end of the Spring
and Fall semesters that showcase some of the best works from the
students in all of the History and Appreciation of the Art-Crafts sections,
which is called “The Non-Artist Exhibition/Awards Ceremony.” Students are
awarded certificates that commend them on their hard work and
dedication in the class, demonstrating the knowledge that has been
imparted through the skills learned. The awards are based off of people
who impacted the Arts and Crafts Movement Era as well as a Mississippi
Artist of the Ocean Springs area. Those awards include The William Morris
Award (Most Outstanding Artist), The Frank Lloyd Wright Award (The Most
Creative Artist), The Gustav Stickley Award (The Best Multi-Media Project),
The Newcomb Pottery Award (The Best Ceramic Art), The Walter Inglis
Anderson Award (The Best Stained Glass Mosaic), and The Best of Show
Award (The Viewer’s Choice), which is chosen by the spectators that visit
the show, and the newly chosen award is The John Ruskin Award (The Best
Video) which is awarded to student’s from the Honors section. I also
create a PowerPoint Presentation into the Non-Artist Exhibition, which
allows the viewers to witness what projects were worthy of awards and
why they were chosen.
I chose to hand make trophies to contribute to the The William Morris
Award (Most Outstanding Artist). These handmade trophies are made
with fused glass. Mr. Mize assisted in making the bases, which were a
wooden structure.
I was nominated for The Cindy Rose Teaching Award, which is a teaching
award that has had the most significant impact on an instructor’s students
during the last three-year period.
