I am writing to nominate Angela Latham for the Outstanding Teaching Award in the College
of Education. I have had the opportunity to witness her teaching contributions, the positive
effect she has on her students, and why she is an excellent candidate for this award.
Ms. Latham teaches four courses per semester of the History and Appreciation of the
Artcrafts, an she has a demonstrable passion for her work. She takes students with little
knowledge of artistic endeavours and engenders in them a creative approach to thinking and
problem solving. Her students are not art majors, but they become capable of producing
remarkable artwork. The impact that she has on students actively learning about design and
applying it to their works of art is impressive. The students create four different projects
during the course, and each project demonstrates how she has invested in her students and
their abilities to grow creatively. She honors her students each semester through the “Non-
Artist Exhibition” that she has initiated, which demonstrates the high-quality instruction our
students are receiving.
Through end-of-course student evaluations and comments, Mrs. Latham’s students have
expressed the excitement, positivity and encouragement that she brings to her teaching. One
student commented, “Coming into this class, I had no clue about art. Through her teachings I
have found an artistic side to me. She is the best teacher. I would recommend this class to
anyone. She makes learning fun.” Her evaluations for Fall 2017 averaged 4.65/5, which is
consistent with prior years of evaluation. She has consistently received “Excellent” ratings on
her annual reviews from year to year.
A great teacher should demonstrate professionalism, a caring and enthusiastic attitude,
respect for students, flexibility, leadership, and have extensive knowledge in one’s chosen
discipline. Ms. Latham has these characteristics. Mrs. Latham is a productive and enthusiastic
worker for the good of our students and the department. She is highly deserving of this
teaching award, and I recommend her without reservation.
Sincerely,
Dr. Trey Martindale

To whom this may concern:
It is my absolute pleasure to recommend Mrs. Latham for a teaching award. As a former
undergraduate student at Mississippi State University, I was given the opportunity to take her course
on the History & Appreciation of the Artcrafts. It was, by far, my favorite course that I took at MSU. I
would have taken any course taught by Mrs. Latham. She has a way of inspiring students to not give
up or take the easy road. With her class being an art class, many students come on the first day very
unsure of their artistic abilities. Mrs. Latham has a way of fixing that. She is able to easily connect with
her students and show them that creativity is not as simplistic as right or wrong. She makes her
students feel confident in their work by always finding the attractive qualities in each project, making it
special and unique.
At the beginning of the course, students are shown examples of each of the projects that will be
completed over the semester. I remember feeling overwhelmed at the amount of work and the
number of steps that seemed to have gone into completing each project. I did not think I was going to
be able to keep up with the pace that was expected of me. Thankfully, Mrs. Latham broke down each
project into multiple steps and never gave me too much information about what was next before I had
completed a step. That is not to say, however, that she left out any necessary information I needed in
order to plan a direction or path for my projects. She was very meticulous and organized in breaking
down the project tasks. With each new step, there was always a demonstration accompanying the
new task that needed to be completed. She thoroughly explained how each tool or piece of machinery
worked and never left students feeling uneasy about using any of the provided equipment.
Not only was I one of Mrs. Latham’s former students, but I was also one of her former teaching
assistants. In the years that I worked for Mrs. Latham, I got to see another side of her teaching ability.
I was able to see the passion she has for sharing her love of the arts and the enjoyment she gets when
a student leaves her class, proud of everything they have accomplished. Mrs. Latham genuinely cares
for each of her students and for his or her success. It is reflected in the amount of extra time she
spends outside of work hours, refining lesson plans and project descriptions so that students can be
more successful and push their creative boundaries. Mrs. Latham is constantly finding and thinking of
new ways to celebrate her students’ success. At the end of each semester, she organizes, in her own
time, an awards show for all of her students so that they can come together and celebrate their
beautiful creations. Not many teachers put that amount of time and effort into their students. Mrs.
Latham is one of the elite.
Sincerely,
Audrey Aldridge

To Whom It May Concern:
It is with great pleasure that I write this letter in support of Mrs. Angela Latham. I had the
wonderful opportunity of being taught and led by Mrs. Latham during the fall of 2017 in her
History and Appreciation of the Art Crafts class.
Mrs. Latham is incredibly passionate about her work, and that devotion shows when she is
instructing her students. She always ensures that each student creates something unique to their
own personal vision.
Perhaps the most notable aspect of Mrs. Latham’s teaching is her patience and graciousness that
she pours onto each student. Her classroom remains a place where non-artists feel comfortable
creating things that they never thought they could, and she makes them comfortable doing so by
creating a positive environment with her cheerful demeanor and wonderful sense of humor.
I am incredibly thankful to have the opportunity to have Mrs. Latham as a role model for my
future in education because of her devotion and her unique teaching styles.
Feel free to contact me if any additional information is needed at 601.260.2861.
Sincerely,
Kristen Simmons

Developmental Activites
Developmental activities include the addition of the new project, “Looking
Through Glassworks to Appreciate the World of Art,” which enhanced the
student’s knowledge and hands on experience with glass kiln-forming by
way of slumping, draping, and forming glass into a work of art.
Self Evaluation
Moving into my sixth year of teaching provides me with much more insight
of what it takes to influence creativity within my students, whether it be my
History and Appreciation of the Art-Crafts or Photography classes. I have
started a new project that imparted a new arena for creativity not only for
my students, but it also has awaken new proficiencies for myself as well. I
have found that these new proficiencies gave awareness to completing
the projects in a more efficient manner, which assists the students in
effectively completing tasks within their projects at a quicker rate.
Expanding my teaching experience into the realm of photography has
instilled in me the ability to be flexible and even more observant. I was able
to see what was necessary to aid the students in successfully accomplishing
their goals of communicating through imagery and journalism.
As I further my teaching experience my goal is to continue to show up for
my students to take them on a journey of creativity that enlightens their art
experience and opens up a world that they may have never imagined,
one that helps them to realize that critical thinking can be used in many
ways.
