The Celebration

Celebration, the crowning of the Best of the Best. Lots of preparing, heavy competition, excitement and
hard work. And not starting now but finishing for the titles & honors coming to the acclaimed World Grand
Champions in all the divisions.

This is the accumulation of the attendance and hard work at all the past shows for hope and success just to
qualify to present your horse at the Celebration. Our moment has arrived! The horse and rider have qualified
to present on the Celebration grounds, but there is no relaxation—the stress, excitement, and criteria intensi-
fies. The Trainers must fine tune every move between horse and rider. The rider must analyze all movement in
the saddle, the intuitive feel of the rider’s hands to the horse’s mouth, the balance between horse and rider. This
takes the presentation ride to a newer higher level and WOW! The excitement is over any limit—its screaming,
hollering time for presenter and spectator.

As a spectator let me paint a mental picture of controlled pandemonium of just the show time. You’re sit-
ting in a huge outdoor arena with thousands of other spectators waiting for your favorite class or horse to per-
form. Looking about, you see friends (old and new), you recognize senators, governors, trainers, riders, farm-
ers—every spectrum of our culture all entering the tradition of Celebration for the Tennessee Walking Horse.
The announcers call out for those consistently attending the Celebration throughout the past years. There were
several who have attended for 70 years plus. We are talking “tradition”. The organ music begins to play and
presenters are ramping up for their specific classes, whether pleasure class or performance class, riding English
or Western, wearing show clothes and tack of English day coat design or bling-filled Western.

The goosebumps begin to grow on your skin, your voice may roughen from cheering, your mind swirls
from trying to out-judge the multitude of judges, your foot begins to tap out a rhythm to keep emotions/ex-
citement to a controllable level. The organ music is stimulating your emotions, the announcers are ramping the
anticipation of winning the World Grand Championship titles, and the horse/rider combo is lighting up your
senses with the perfection of gait. The Show is on!

There is a let down of thrills at the end of the night’s presentation and especially after the choosing of the
World Grand Champion of the Stallions—the last class of the show. The Celebration is 10 days long of thrills,
excitement, and anticipation.

Add to all this the trips to Bedford Tack for supplies or just the smell of leather, lunch at Bell Buckle Café
(a recipe of homemade Southern cooking prepared on the spot with Southern desserts), traveling about the
countryside to Trainer’s barns, private viewings of young horses, several sales/auctions. Your day is filled with
equine enjoyment and your nights with the Show.

Everywhere you go, stores, restaurants, etc.…are shown billboards, pictures, advertisement of past World
Grand Champions and those to be presented this year. Let’s not forget the Wartrace Historical Museum hold-
ing such treasures such as the bridle with rope bit that Ebony’s Mountain Man wore to win his World Grand
Championship, picture of past owners, trainers, and equines. The history of Tennessee Walking Horses on
view. Definitely not the last nor the least is the TWHBEA headquarters in Lewisburg, Tennessee containing the
registration of Tennessee Walking Horses and the VOICE magazine.

If you return home unimpressed and not speaking Horse, you’re either not living or you went to the wrong
city and horse show.

The Tennessee Walking Horse Youth
Association 3rd Annual Summer Splash
was held August 14, 2021 at the S.W.
Beech Memorial Horse Show Grounds
in Belfast, Tennessee. The youth worked
hard on all the details from hiring a judge
to making sure someone was on the
gate. Tom Kakassy judged the 37 class-
es of the Youth and Halter show.

Corbin Parker and Obey My Com-
mand carried the flag, Leilani Landon
said the prayer and Laney Mullinax
played the national anthem on her violin.

Robert Nelms was a great supporter
of the youth with 14 entries that earned
6 blue ribbons. The Dotson Brothers had
several top entries showing and claimed
4 blue ribbons.

Congratulations to the youth a anoth-

care of me as well as Casey. Immediately following surgery,
the doctor looked at my friend and said, “I want you to
take NC and get him something to eat and get him off this
property. I have seen his relationship with this horse, and
they are connected at a spiritual level. When Casey comes
out of the anesthetic and senses NC’s presence anywhere
on this property, he will not come out successfully. He will
try to get to NC. His safety is with NC. I saw it in the exam
room when we were examining him. When NC was out
of eyesight, Casey fell apart. Casey became violent and
uncontrollable. When NC came back to the exam room,
Casey became stoic. NC has a connection with Casey that
is unbelievable. We will call you when Casey is standing,
and it’s safe for NC to come back.”

Casey and I were undoubtedly connected. That’s

and everything we shared over those 22 years. He was the
horse of a lifetime.

The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association, in association with FAST, is proud to
announce the re-establishment of the Youth Medallion Program. This class encourages youth riders to learn
and become proficient at the canter. It is a great way for our industry to regain the canter, and to reward our
youth for achieving excellence at this level.

Youth Medallion classes will be offered at various horse shows throughout the year. There will be two divi-
sions, performance and pleasure, each division with its own end-of-year award. Riders will receive points de-
termined by their placings in these two divisions, with the rider accumulating the most points in each division
receiving an educational scholarship valued at $500.00. Payout for Medallion classes are a medallion and
money as follows $100, $75, $50, $40, $30.

Guidelines for the Youth Medallion Classes:
• Open to all youth riders, age 17 and under (age as of January 1).
• Ownership of the horse is not required. Stallions are not allowed.
• Classes are for Flat-Shod and padded Performance Show Horses, performing all three gaits - flat
walk, running walk, and canter.
• The rider, not the horse, accumulates points awarded for placing and participating in the class. There-
fore, riders are not required to show the same horse throughout the season.

Any horse show interested in offering medallion classes should contact TWHBEA at (931)
359-0592. Affiliation forms are available at twhbea.com under Youth Forms.
