NASHVILLE, TN – February 11, 2023 – Stephen Smith, Chairman of the MTSU Board of Trustees, former Blue Raiders pitcher, and Championship Walking Horse rider and breeder, has been named a member of the 2023 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Class. Smith was surprised with the news Saturday evening prior to the MTSU Lady Raiders basketball game versus UAB. MTSU President Dr. Sidney McPhee, MTSU Athletics Director Chris Massaro, and Lady Raiders Coach and TSHF Inductee Rick Insell were all present for the announcement. “Stephen Smith connection to Middle Tennessee covers the last six decades, from his time at Battle Ground Academy, to MTSU, to the Tennessee Walking Horse industry, Stephen was made an impact throughout his life,” said Brad Willis, Executive Director of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. “To this day he continues to contribute his time and efforts to athletics, and we are thrilled to be able to honor him as part of our 2023 Class.” Smith graduated from Battle Ground Academy as a three-sport letterman, before pitching for the MTSU Baseball team. He played an important role in the OVC Championship team in 1976 and overcame a life-threatening auto accident in 1977 to lead MTSU to a Western Division OVC Championship. Smith spent time as a scout with the St. Louis Cardinals, he was an original partner and board member of the Nashville Sounds, a board member of the Nashville Old Timers Baseball Association, and winner of the Association’s 2009 “Mr. Baseball” award. Smith spent time coaching youth baseball, and currently serves on the Williamson County Sports Authority and as a board member of Music City Baseball, an organization dedicated to bringing MLB to Nashville. Smith led the effort to construct the first lighted college baseball stadium in Tennessee, the current 3,000 seat stadium, and MTSU’s new baseball clubhouse which is named in his honor. Smith serves as the inaugural Chairman of the MTSU Board of Trustees. Smith has also been a lifelong horseman, winning 10 World Championships as a rider. He is a Master Breeder Award winner for Walking horses, and has bred, foaled, and raised eleven Tennessee Walking Horses that have won a combined 32 World Championships. The 55th Annual National Trainers’ Show was held March 15-18, 2023 at Cooper Steel Arena on the showgrounds of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Brent Grider, Dickie Scrivner and David Sisk served as judges for the show. This year’s show had 339 entries, which was 10 more than 2022. This was a great number for the freezing weather that middle Tennessee experienced during the show. Mr. True Blue and R.M. Kellett claimed the title of 2023 National Trainers’ Show Grand Champions for owners the Jacobs Family of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Reserve went to Outta Line Ritz and Jimmy Baumgardner for owner Cindy von Dohln. Mr. True Blue, 2023 National Trainers’ Show Grand Champion. By Mary Beth Pruett “To be there, riding a good horse, and to be lucky enough to see a championship run by a great dog, it just can’t be any better than that,” says Bubba Spencer. He is talking about the National Field Trial Championship, held each February in Grand Junction, Tennessee. He and his wife, Amy, are avid dog handlers, as well as enthusiastic horsemen. First run in 1896, the National Championship has its origins in Mississippi. Hobert and Julia Ames, avid riders and hunters, gave the competition a permanent home on the Ames Plantation in 1915, running it for the next 35 years. Hobert Ames wrote the standard for the judging of the championship, the standard still used today. His wife Julia set up the Hobart Ames Foundation before her death to ensure that the tradition will continue on the property. The 2023 Championship was the 124th edition of the trial, which is run on 6,000 acres with approximately 36 entries. Dogs qualify to compete by their placements in seventy qualifying events throughout the United States and Canada. Thousands of field trial enthusiasts attend the championship. Not much has changed over the history of the event. The competition is still dominated by the English Pointer and the English Setter, with the pointers outnumbering setters in the field. The judges score not only on birds found but on the dog’s overall performance. “Participants and judges like a dog with head and tail up,” says Spencer. “The dogs are a little more stylish and prettier than in the past.” Otherwise, he says, “It’s run the same way on the same dirt.” Hallowed ground, some people call it. One thing that has changed is the type of horse riders prefer. In the beginnings of field trials, all breeds were common, and most horses were ordinary blacks, bays, sorrels and a few greys. Over time, Walking Horses help handlers excel at Field Trial Championship Field Trial.indd 2 5/4/23 10:47 AM

gaited breeds became the preferred mounts, with the Tennessee Walking Horse considered the best ride of all. “The horses are bigger now,” says Amy, “and more colorful.” Roans, greys, and horses with colorful markings make a varied and colorful field, carrying their riders through fields and woods behind the dogs. People like to ride a pretty horse, they agree. A big horse makes it easier to see the dogs, and a big stout horse can push through brush and muddy ground without tiring quickly. The number one requirement, however, is a horse with a good canter. “That’s the first question we ask when looking for a field trial horse,” says Amy. “Does he canter?” The rocking chair canter of the Tennessee Walking Horse is ideal. Most riders use Canadian Trooper saddles for all day comfort and convenience. Field trial horses have three distinct jobs. A few horses are proficient in all three roles, but that is rare. Handler horses, as the name says, are ridden by the dog’s handler out in front of the rest of the field. Commands are given from horseback and the dog looks toward the horse for directions. For that reason, many handlers prefer light colored horses. A handler’s horse must be sure-footed and able to avoid obstacles on his own, giving the rider freedom to concentrate on the dog. The horse must canter up to the dog when he points, stop and stand still while ground tied. Then the horse must stand for re-mounting and go back to a canter for the next find. It is a given that the handler horse must be tolerant of dogs, not only running beside them but often hitching a ride home in the saddle after a brace. Horses ridden by scouts have a very specific job. The scout does the behind-the-scenes work and looks for a dog when it has gone off course. A scout’s horse must be quiet, sure-footed, and quick. Along with the quickness, they must also settle back into a calm way of going, many times while searching for a dog Field Trial.indd 3 5/4/23 10:48 AM

away from the other horses. The scout will locate and gather the dog, so the horse must be accustomed to a dog running beside him. Many scouts prefer a darker horse that blends into the background. Gallery horses must be well-mannered, unafraid of dogs, wildlife, gunfire and other noises. They must be able to cover ground, but willing to stop and stand quietly when asked. Judges ride at the front of the gallery and their horses are sometimes asked to stay behind if the judge needs to wait for a handler, even when the other horses ride away. Most riders bring their own horse for the field trial, although there are usually a few extras for the horseless who wish to join in. For those who don’t ride, they might be lucky enough to catch a ride in a vehicle, catching sight of the dogs and horses at road crossings. Vera Courtney is one such observer, watching and photographing the event from her vehicle. “After I lost my last Walking Horse,” she says, “I decided to retire from riding and follow the field on the road.” Her pictures capture the excitement and beauty of the trial and she is a knowledgeable guide. It takes endurance for success at Grand Junction, for dog, horse, and rider. In the competition, a brace of dogs runs in the morning and another brace covers a different course in the afternoon. Each run is about three hours over varied terrain. Open fields, brushy areas (called cover), and piney woods challenge dog, handler, and spectator. The gallery, which can number from fifty to three hundred riders follow the three judges and cover about twelve miles over the course of a day. Riders as young as nine and as old as ninety follow the dogs, eager to witness that championship run. Sunshine and chilly temperatures kicked off the day on the morning of February 13, as the first brace began their quest for a national championship title. As is typical of Tennessee weather, the weather ran the gamut from balmy to stormy to downright cold and frosty over the two weeks of competition. Sleet fell during the sendoff of the eighth brace, but even that couldn’t dim the excitement of dogs and handlers. By the afternoon of February 21, twenty-eight dogs had showcased their abilities over the demanding course. Last year’s winning handler was back in the field Field Trial.indd 4 5/4/23 10:48 AM

this year with his 2022 champion Lester’s Shockwave. Gary Lester of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, is a six time National Field Trial Champion handler and longtime TWH owner. The Lesters have been successful in the show ring as well as in the field trial world. Another Tennessee Walking Horse owner in the field was Bridget Ledington, who is only the second female handler to qualify a dog for this championship. Bridget grew up riding walking horses. Her dog, Painted Owyhee Toad, came the greatest distance of any of this year’s competitors, making the trip from Idaho with owners Jim and Bridget Ledington, with the father as the breeder and the daughter as the handler. The winning dog was announced on the steps of the Ames Manor at the close of the competition. The 2023 champion is Miller’s Blindsider, owned by Nick Berrong, handled by Jamie Daniels and scouted by Judd Carlton. Daniels took home an extra $500 as the first recipient of the TWHBEA Incentive Award. The paycheck was offered to the winning handler if he was riding a registered Tennessee Walking Horse. Winning handler Jamie Daniels rode Royal’s Color Dollar, owned by Harrison Lee of Union Springs, Alabama. The big palomino gelding, bred by J.W. Beard of Troy, Alabama, was sired by Royal’s Lucky Colors and out of Delivered at Dawn. What could be better than not only being lucky enough to witness a great run, but to be a part of that great run, and to be riding a Tennessee Walking Horse? Field Trial.indd 5 5/4/23 10:48 AM

Submitted by Alon Zuckerman The Zukerman farm is a family run operation lying in three locations within the northern Isreali foothills. The farm includes green woods and fertile valleys. Erez Zukerman and his brother Alon run the farm in Israel, which was founded by their father. Alon describes their farm and their involvement with the Tennessee Walking Horses. Our legacy of farming, ranching, and cultivating the land goes back to the early 1960s. As a member of a pioneer group, our father established the homestead in the then very young state of Israel , herding and guarding cattle herds in a remote area near the northern border of the country. Because of the distance and the harshness of the land, horseback riding was the only productive way to work the land. Being a nature lover, an animal lover and a horse lover, this suited our father and his example was the background of our childhood. Our cattle herds are well known in the country’s beef market, and our horses are a familiar sight, grazing and playing at our property’s pastures as well as performing at horse shows or riding the trails. Throughout the years, we have operated our farm with great passion, delivering it to our children and a newborn grandchild. It is a living part of our pride. The greatest love and passion we have is our love towards horses. This admiration runs in the family and has always been a part of our day-to-day life. We began by breeding, raising, training, and riding our AQHA cow horses, Western show horses, and trail riding horses. In the past decade we were introduced to the Tennessee Walking Horses and our journey to becoming TWH fans and breeders began. Israeli Family Falls In Love With Walking Horses Israel.indd 2 5/4/23 10:56 AM

First, we tried them for trail rides and loved them. Then we tried them for our youngsters and toddlers and loved them. We tried them for our light working and herding missions and loved them. In all, we found the TWH suitable for our purposes and good for our souls. Our first three mares were bought in the country and our stallion was imported from the United States to our stables as a young stud. We bred our mares with a selective and mindful program that was developing and comprehensively planned as we grew to learn, appreciate, and value the abilities and capabilities of the offspring we produced. The offspring met all of our expectations. We eventually established our own signature blood line, fulfilling our vision of “self made” Tennessee Walking Horses at our stables that are as fine and versatile as we envisioned and hoped for. Just recently, in order to fully accomplish our goal and vision , we bought and imported two magnificent horses in Tennessee, a young stud named I’m Semper Fi and a mare named Miss Jazz Queen. Both horses are from the Tibbs Farm, owned by Mike and Leighanne Tibbs, whose breeding program and bloodlines became know to us as we were looking for “that thing,” that one last game changer, a characteristic quality that will elevate our program to the highest levels we dare to imagine. These two horses are now alongside our home born foals and fillies under our easy-going training program and a most beloved part of the family. Our TWHs for us are very precious. With their wide spectrum of capabilities and will, they cover all areas of farming, ranching and recreational riding. And they do that with their peaceful mindset, willing heart and the beauty of their nature. Israel.indd 3 5/4/23 10:56 AM
