Meet TWHBEA Georgia Hazelwood – President My family has bred walking horses for years so I’ve owned Tennessee walking horses since in was born. I started out showing halter colts, but now I show performance horses with Jeff Green as well. My favorite TWHBEA show is the TWHYA Summer Splash. It gives us youth a chance to step up and experience all parts of putting on a good show. I show dairy cattle. I show at PWHAT and WHOA shows. I’m in the Spring Hill FFA. I’m on the Maury county 4-H horse judging team. And, I’m planning on showing pigs and goats with my schools FFA. LeiLani Landon - Vice President I first got involved with Tennessee walking horses by my mom who showed and rode walking horses before I was born. My favorite event within TWHYA would have to be our annual Summer Splash we put on in Belfast because of the people it brings together and the completion of showing with other youth I am friends with. I am involved in showing APHA and PtHA at breed shows and participating in AjPHA directors events. They were asked the following questions. How did you first get involved with the Tennessee Walking Horse? What is your favorite event or activity within TWHBEA/TWHYA? What other clubs, sports, etc. are you involved with besides TWHYA? 52 Youth Officers.indd 2 5/4/23 11:04 AM
2023 Youth Officers Chloe Casteel - Secretary I first got involved with the Tennessee Walking Horse through my family. I am a 5th generation horse person, and we have been involved with the walking horse breed since the 60s. I have been showing and trail riding all of my life. My favorite activities with TWHBEA are the horse shows and the Celebration. I am involved with the Stone Memorial High School Band and serve as the Drumline Captain. I am also a 4-H All Star Member and enjoy doing the service projects involved. Marshall Mills - Treasurer I got involved with the Tennessee Walking horses because my father showed and I wanted to be like my father and show a Tennessee Walking horse My favorite event would be the Celebration, because I love the atmosphere and it makes me remember my Great Grandfather, Hoyte Eakes. I am on the Davidson academy high school football team, I also am on the high school soccer team. 53 Youth Officers.indd 3 5/4/23 11:04 AM

TWHBEA Announces $2,500 Youth Challenge Cup for Halter Classes The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ & Exhibitors’ Association is excited to announce a $2,500 Youth Challenge Cup program for youth who participate in halter classes. The program is sponsored by the Jake Jacobs Family. Youth exhibitors will accumulate points every time they show in a halter class at a TWHBEA affiliated show. Halter classes include model, showmanship, weanling, yearling, and in-hand trail obstacle. They can be designated open, amateur or youth. The class can be open to any breed, but the horse must be a Tennessee Walking Horse and the handler needs to be a youth member. The Youth Challenge Cup will follow the TWHBEA program year (Oct – Sept) and the top point earners will earn a portion of the $2,500 jackpot. “Halter classes are a great gateway for youth to get involved in showing Tennessee Walking Horses,” says Chris Hazelwood, TWHBEA Youth Vice-President. “We’re starting with the halter classes and hope to expand this program to under saddle classes in future years.” To earn points: • The handler must be a youth member of TWHBEA. Youth memberships are $20 and 4-H members who show TWHs can join for free at www.twhbea.com/4h. • The horse must be a registered Tennessee Walking Horse. • The show where the class is held must be affiliated with the TWHBEA International High Point Program. Shows can affiliate at www.twhbea.com/affiliate for no charge. If you’d like more information or have questions about the Youth Challenge Cup program or the Tennessee Walking Horse Youth Association, call 931-359-1574 or email programs@ twhbea.com. TWHBEA Youth Medallion Class Standing The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association, is proud to encourage youth riders learning and becoming proficient at the canter. It is a great way for our industry to regain the canter, and to reward our youth for achieving excellence at this level. Youth Medallion classes will be offered at various horse shows throughout the year. There will be two divisions, performance and pleasure, each division with its own end-of-year award. Riders will receive points determined by their placings in these two divisions, with the rider accumulating the most points in each division receiving an educational scholarship valued at $500.00. Payout for Medallion classes are a medallion and money as follows $100, $75, $50, $40, $30. Guidelines for the Youth Medallion Classes: • Open to all youth riders, age 17 and under (age as of January 1). • Ownership of the horse is not required. Stallions are not allowed. • Classes are for Flat-Shod and padded Performance Show Horses, performing all three gaits - flat walk, running walk, and canter. • The rider, not the horse, accumulates points awarded for placing and participating in the class. Therefore, riders are not required to show the same horse throughout the season. Any horse show interested in offering medallion classes should contact TWHBEA at (931) 359-0592. 62 Extreme Cowboy Clinic – Bushnell, FL Craig and Cole Cameron recently held a clinic at Darby Oaks Stables in Bushnell, Florida – both riding Tennessee Walking Horses. Craig Cameron is the founder of the Extreme Cowboy Race, winner of the Road to the Horse competition in 2010 and member of the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame. Craig’s son, Cole follows in his father’s footsteps as a worldclass horseman, traveling the globe teaching clinics while also staying competitive in the show arena. Craig has ridden about every breed of horse, including some gaited horses, but this was Cole’s first time to experience the smooth ride of a TWH. According to Tracy Pinson, he was smiling the whole time! Cole rode Dangerous Da Vince, owned by Shelby Ratliff, and Craig rode 2X T-Buck, a stallion owned by Vaudry Edge and Tracy Pinson. Promoting The Tennessee Walking Horse Southern Equine Expo – Murfreesboro, TN Tennessee Tech University – Cookeville, TN TWHBEA was honored to once again be a part of the Southern Equine Expo, held March 17-19, at the Miller Coliseum. The event welcomes thousands of horse enthusiasts from across the Southeast to enjoy over 100 clinics/ demonstrations, lectures and more than 90 vendors. In addition to having a booth, TWHBEA participated in the breed demonstrations with several riders exhibiting the versatility of the Tennessee Walking Horse. 16-year-old Claire Winstead brought her TWH barrel racing champion, Crimson Playmate, from North Carolina for the demo and was joined by Eliza DeKleyn and Labeled a Parolee, Debbie Simons and Ferdinand, Caitlin Winstead and My Ravena. Jessica Mast served as the coordinator and emcee for the demonstration. In March, Rod, Teresa and Cassi Slagle along with Jordan Stacy introduced the equine production class at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville to the Tennessee Walking Horse. With the help of their horse, A Good Time Charlie, the learned about the breed’s natural gait, shoeing process/regulations, how horses are inspected at shows, and the versatility and longevity of the breed. Each student received information from TWHBEA and The Celebration. Promotion.indd 2 5/4/23 2:38 PM

The directory includes contact information for licensed trainers, riding instructors, and breeding stallions. It also has historical information, a calendar of shows and information on TWHBEA programs. The directory can be picked up for free at TWHBEA, WHTA, or The Celebration. We’re also happy to mail one to you if you’ll pay postage and handling. You can order your copy online at www.store.twhbea.com. TWHBEA and the Glen C. Dowell Family recognize that youth are vital to the successful future of the Tennessee Walking Horse industry and awards both graduate and undergraduate scholarships each year. Scholarships can be used for accredited colleges, junior colleges, universities, or trade schools. The scholarship amounts are based on availability of funds and the selection is based equally on academic performance, extracurricular activities, and equine involvement. Applications must be submitted by June 15, 2023. Visit www. twhbea.com/youth/industry-scholarships for more information on this and other scholarships available. In an effort to reward Tennessee Walking Horse owners where they excel in various disciplines, TWHBEA is offering a $1,000 incentive that will be split between the top registered Tennessee Walking Horses in each division of the Extreme Cowboy Race National Championships. The event is scheduled for June 3-4, 2023 in Champions Arena on the grounds of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration.
