Julia & John Allan: Call away Champions What more can be said about a horse that has just won the World Grand Championship for the third time? Justified Honors came in the ring looking like the champion he is and left the ring looking the same way. His performance improved with each lap of the ring, rising to the challenge from his competitors, who were nipping at his heels. The stake class was deep with talent, and each horse put on a great show, leaving it all on the track, as the saying goes. The crowd was treated to what almost amounted to an extra workout during lineup time, with the three top finishers actually leaving the lineup for one more lap. It was a battle, but John Allan Callaway and the six-year-old black stallion made it look easy. John Allan also set another Celebration record – he became the first trainer to win four consecutive World Grand Championships. By: Mary Beth Pruett His previous win was in 2020 with Masters Razzel and Jazz. John Allan admits that from the first time he saw the two-year-old colt, he was drawn to him. And, after riding him for several weeks, he knew he had found a great prospect for the Baums. Not only does he have power and presence in the show ring; he also has an easy-going disposition outside the show ring. He is smart and seems to know how to turn his motor on and off. “He never lets me down,” says the trainer. “I’ve had a lot of great horses, but I’ve never had one who is as dependable as Justified Honors.” When Justified Honors won his first World Grand Championship as a four-year-old, John Allan was convinced then that the stallion had not peaked. By the following year, he had matured, and he confirmed his trainer’s prediction. It was no surprise that they made it two in a row; the only question was whether they would try again in 2023. Lisa Baum did not rule it out. “We’ll have to wait and see,” she said as the show season progressed. “I still have a hard time believing we own such a talented horse,” she said after the historic third victory. “I just never dreamed of owning a horse like him. We will never have another one like him.” The Voice • October 2023 50
Spectators knew they were in for something special from the beginning of the class. The rivalry between the top two finishers harkens back to the rivalries of the early days, when horses like Midnight Sun and Merry Go Boy went head-to-head. It was as much a battle between sires as anything. José José and Honors were well represented in this year’s stake class, Honors with three entries and José José with two sons and one grandson. But the historic victory in the stake class was not the only high point of the night for the trainer. A few classes before the final class, John Allan won the Show Pleasure World Grand Championship on The Honor Code for Lisa Baum. And in the class just before that, he put his daughter, Julia Callaway, in the ring for the Youth World Grand Championship. Riding Nevermore, her mount for the last four years, she made the spotlight ride without her dad present. John Allan was in the warmup ring with The Honor Code and had to watch her victory trip on screen. “It was the best night ever,” says Jada Callaway, John Allan’s wife and Julia’s mom. “It was absolutely a dream come true. To see John Allan win the championship again with Justified Honors and for him to experience putting his child in the ring to win her own WGC – I don’t know if that’s ever happened before or not, but it was amazing.” Sixteen-year-old Julia started her journey with Nevermore four years ago, winning a blue ribbon in Fayetteville with the mare at their first show together. “You would have thought it was the big stake class,” Jada remembers. “Her daddy was so emotional.” She continues, “Nevermore was always Julia’s favorite horse. And we are so appreciative of Dr. Barbara Moersch for letting us lease her “It was absolutely a dream come true.” “I just never dreamed of owning a horse like him. We will never have another one like him.” Julia cheering on her dad at a young age 51 The Voice • October 2023
for Julia. It could not have been an easy decision. Nevermore was her late daughter Sarah’s horse.” Nevermore’s name comes from Sarah’s favorite poet, Edgar Allan Poe, and his most famous poem, “The Raven.” “She is a huge mare,” Jada says, “and she’s a fire breathing dragon with just about everyone else. But with Julia, she’s as docile as a lamb. Julia is really the only person the mare likes! And Julia has worked really hard with her over the last four years. Her riding just improved and improved every time she showed her.” With her trainer father keeping a busy schedule during show season, Julia depended on a lot of riding in the off season. Her work paid off. “They moved up over the past four years from the pastel ribbons at the Celebration to a blue ribbon and a set of roses,” Jada said. “She inherited her Daddy’s natural feel for a horse, and she is so determined to do well. If she sets her mind on something, it’s going to happen!” Julia won her first blue ribbon at the Celebration in 2022 in Youth Park Pleasure with Just Jose It. John Allan was able to get to the ring in time to see that accomplishment. She also rode to reserve in the Youth 17 and Under World Grand Championship with Nevermore. Julia is also her Daddy’s biggest fan. “She gets a little carried away with her enthusiasm sometimes,” “. . . one of the highlights of the last twenty years.” her mom admits. She had a lot to get carried away with on the last Saturday night of the 2023 Celebration, along with everyone in the Callaway family and the Baum family, who own Justified Honors. “They truly put on a show,” says Jada. “I think it was one of the highlights of the last twenty years.” The obvious question is “What about next year?” No one is even thinking about that yet. Justified Honors is already in demand as a breeding stallion and this victory will cement his desirability as a sire. Next year, there might be offspring entering the show ring, especially in the colt classes. Julia has another couple of years to repeat her World Grand Championship in the youth division, with her partner Nevermore. For John Allan and the Baums, everyone will just have to wait and see. Justified Honors will let them know. The Voice • October 2023 52

2023 Celebration Youth Clinic Afree clinic, including a pizza lunch, was held during the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration with versatility champion Tracy Pinson and Dr. Leslie Perry Collins. The clinic was held in the Cooper Steel Arena on Wednesday morning, August 30, 2023, and was a project of TWHBEA, made possible through financial support of the Youth Equine Support Fund. Pinson opened the clinic with coverage of trail class obstacles. She is a longtime competitor in the TWHBEA versatility program and in the past decade has become well-known for her success in the Extreme Cowboy Association. Pinson trained and rode the first Tennessee Walking Horse to win a championship in the Extreme Cowboy Race and was also the first walking horse exhibitor to compete in the Calgary Stampede. As an introduction to the clinic’s topic, Pinson talked a little about her background and what led her to her interest in versatility events. She said, “These horses never disappoint me. I wanted to show the Quarter Horse people that our horse can do it all. They can do anything.” She pointed out that the first step in obstacle training is to get control of the horse’s body and learn to do the movements without the obstacle first. “When introducing obstacles,” she continued, “break them down into small steps.” Other advice had more to do with the rider’s mindset than the horse’s performance. “Have a mindset that we are going to do this,” she stressed. “Don’t get frustrated and don’t get in a hurry.” She also advised that if a rider is having trouble with an obstacle to find something else the horse is good at and do that to build confidence. Confidence leads to perfection. “Confidence leads to perfection.” by: Mary Beth Pruett Tracy Pinson answers questions during her demonstration The Voice • October 2023 66
Nine-year-old Hope Phillips brought her horse into the arena, and Pinson guided her through several obstacles, making noticeable improvements with just small changes in the way she rode. The smile on the young rider’s face was proof that Pinson’s tips were good ones. After a break for pizza, Dr. Leslie Perry Collins, a certified riding instructor with several world championships to her credit, began the second part of the clinic, focusing on showmanship. Using a horse and young handler, Ruth Collins, she explained positioning and where the handler needs to be in relation to the judge. She stressed keeping one eye on the judge every minute of the class. “Show your horse until the judge’s card is turned in,” she said. “You never know when the judge might decide to have one last look.” Her advice about the showmanship pattern, no matter how simple or how complicated, was to break it down into each part to simplify it. She talked about and showed attire for showmanship and gave tips for looking good in Western or English. Attire for the horse was next, with Collins demonstrating proper fit for English and Western halters. Ava Reed and Kilie Phillips joined Ruth Collins with their horses, each horse at a different level of experience at showmanship. Perry explained how to set up the horse, how to back and pivot and how to use subtle cues with the hands to control direction. She stressed a confident attitude when leading the horse. “Shoulders back, chin up, long steps and stay beside the horse’s neck,” she instructed. She summed it up this way: “You worked hard to get here. You came to show, so show your horse.” “You worked hard to get here. Bridging Borders: Visitors from Mexico Embark on a Tennessee Walking Horse Adventure By: Mary Beth Pruett seats for the group to attend the last three nights of the Celebration. Seeing the Celebration was a high point of the trip. Osorno said that seeing the classes on video does not compare to watching in person. “They are spectacular,” he said, speaking through interpreter Brad Woodruff. Marvan explained how he got involved with the breed thirty years ago when he became interested in field trials on a visit to South Carolina. He ended up bringing professional dog trainers with their Tennessee Walking Horses to Mexico to start field trials there. One of his reasons for the trip was to look for a stallion prospect for his breeding operation. Contreres, a professional cowboy in Mexico, was introduced to the breed when he had his quarter horses stabled in a barn with TWH. Now he is a fan of the breed. “Videos do not do justice to the excitement of the show and the horses,” he said. The members of the group are serious about studying bloodlines and looking for breeding stock to import. One of the original stallions brought to Mexico was a Rowdy Rev stud selected especially by Bill Harlin to export. Osorno explained that Hugo Brito led the development of the breed in Mexico and worked with TWHBEA through the grants to plan clinics, shows and other events. A special feature of the Competencia TWH Mexico is a trail ride after the show in one of the most beautiful places in the world to ride horses, with miles of open land in view of an active volcano. They have also competed in the World Wide Virtual Trail Ride Competition, using drones to film their trail rides. Thanks to these enthusiastic breed owners, more and more people in Mexico are discovering what so many already know. The comfortable ride, great disposition and the can-do attitude of the Tennessee Walking Horse is right at home anywhere in the world. From its beginnings as a breed in Middle Tennessee, the popularity of the Tennessee Walking Horse has spread across the United States and into at least twenty-nine foreign countries. Over several decades, the Celebration has drawn visitors for several of those countries. In 2023, a group of breed enthusiasts from Mexico made the trip to see with their own eyes the excitement of the World Grand Championship show and to visit breeding farms, trainers, tack stores, and other industry locations. Paco Osorno, Jose Marvan, Cesar Contreras, Susana Osorno, Susana Contreras, Pilar Canedo, Sofi Contreras and Fernado Contreras were escorted by Dr. Brad Woodruff, TWHBEA International Committee member and Pam Staser, TWHBEA member from Illinois leading the delegation and translating. Among the facilities they visited were Sugar Creek Farm, ThorSport Farm, Scott McGregor Stables, Circle T Farm and Wyatt Green Farm. They also enjoyed Bell Buckle Café, the Walking Horse Museum, Nearest Green Distillery, TWHBEA headquarters, Winner’s Circle and Bedford Tack. The Mexican contingent have been involved with TWHBEA since the association began marketing efforts in Mexico utilizing USDA/United States Livestock Genetics Export grant funds for international livestock market expansion. In 2019, Poco Osorno attended a Reverse Trade Mission organized by TWHBEA and purchased his first Tennessee Walking Horse, a bred mare. He now owns 16 Walking Horses. His purpose for this visit was to purchase a stallion prospect and some quality trail pleasure horses for two of his friends back in Mexico. A detailed plan was prepared for Mark Farrar and International Vice President Denise Bader from Germany for the USLGE program. Both Farrar and Bader joined the delegation at various stops during the group’s stay. Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration CEO Warren Wells provided box The Voice • October 2023 70

Jack Harney Jack Harney A Rising Young Star at the 2023 Celebration By: Mary Beth Pruett There was a new kid in town at the 2023 Celebration and he came to make his mark. Jack Harney, son of Justin and Rebekah Harney of Murfreesboro, was the smallest in his class, and the youngest, but he showed that size and age doesn’t matter, when he won the Youth Pony World Grand Championship on Thursday night with The Ultimate Honor. Jack was showing at his first Celebration, and while he might be a new face in the ring, the Harney family are no strangers to the show or to the Tennessee Walking Horse world. The Harney’s involvement goes back several generations, all the way to John Harney’s grandfather, who had Merry Walker, a great Merry Boy mare. John Harney raised and trained mares and colts and won the 15.2 and Under World Grand Championship on Delight’s Crackerjack. John and his wife Debbie met through their involvement with the Tennessee Walking Horse and had two children, Jaclyn and Justin. In turn, Justin and Jaclyn grew up showing horses. Justin’s first World Championship was on his pony Royal’s Dark Bum in 2002. And now 21 years later, his son The Ultimate Honor and the Harney Family following their 2023 Celebration WGC win The Voice • October 2023 74
Jack has duplicated his effort at the young age of seven, finishing out an undefeated season riding The Ultimate Honor. Not content with that, he went on to do what his dad didn’t do, he won the World Grand Championship on Thursday night. “We’ve had lots of world champions but never a world grand championship,” said Jack’s mom Rebekah Harney. Seeing Jack’s ride and hearing his number called as the winner was a real high point. “We want to thank the crowd for getting on their feet and cheering him on. It was definitely one of the most exciting moments of our lives as parents. It just brought a flood of emotions.” Like many other couples in the Walking Horse world, Justin and Rebekah Smith met through the horse business. Rebekah’s family had also enjoyed years of involvement with Tennessee Walking Horses. Jimmy and Brenda Smith owned Folsom Prison Blues, Reserve WGC in 2011, and Coin’s Clown, a World Champion “It was definitely one of the most exciting moments of our lives as parents.” amateur horse in 2002. Rebekah rode two 11 & Under World Champions, but never won a World Grand Championship. “I’ve been going to the Celebration since I was a baby,” she says. “Both our families have a long history with the breed.” The couple were married in 2013 and have two sons, Jack and Jonah. Jack started out showing in leadline classes at age four and only rode his first padded horse last summer. Jack is a second grader at Middle Tennessee Christian in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. “He loves to play and train on his pony Buster Moon at the barn, says Rebekah. She laughs, “Buster Moon is a character in a kid’s movie. Jack named him from that.” The Ultimate Honor is trained by Premier Stables and he and Jack have been a team since his purchase in November, 2022. The team made their debut at the United Fall Classic, in Tunica where they won the pony class. They have been undefeated since then. Jack’s win checks a box for another first, this one for Premier Stables. This is their first World Grand Championship as a barn. And Jack is possibly the youngest rider to win a Youth Pony World Grand Championship. One thing is sure. Jack Harney has already established himself as a determined competitor and has taken his place as the fifth generation of a family committed to the future of the Tennessee Walking Horse. The 2023 Horse Bowl was hosted at the TWHBEA Headquarters in Lewisburg, TN on August 19, 2023. There were 5 Junior Teams and 2 Senior Teams that competed. Horse bowl is an exciting and fun approach to equine knowledge as well as Tennessee Walking Horse trivia. Sterling Woodruff a boy, his horse, & his dog on the path to victory I f there is anything people like better than a story about a boy and his horse, it’s a boy and his dog. Ten-year-old Sterling Woodruff, son of Woody and Emily Woodruff of Flat Creek, Tennessee, can provide both. The Woodruff family lives on Whiskey Hollow Farm, where Sterling and his younger sister Vivian have learned to ride and help take care of the Woodruff horses. The story doesn’t start with Sterling. His family on both sides are steeped in history with the Tennessee Walking Horse. His grandparents, Woody, Sr., and Becky Woodruff, come from a line of horse people in Tennessee. And his mom’s parents, Bobby and Lisa Rogers, also have an equine background. Bobby and his father Earl are long time walking horse owners in Owingsville, Kentucky. Woody and Emily met at the Celebration on the front porch of Brandon Stout’s stalls. So, you might say the preface to Sterling’s story began there. By: Mary Beth Pruett " . . . he had already accomplished more than most ten-yearolds dream about.” Sterling’s own story begins when he began riding and showing in lead line. He won the Lead Line World Grand Championship at five, riding Charles Gleghorn’s pony, Shake’s Little Midnite. By the time he won his solo World Championship this year at age ten, riding Kissed in Dixie to an 11 and Under All Day Pleasure championship, he had already accomplished more than most ten-year-olds dream about. His performance The Voice • October 2023 84
mount, Super Puncher, has added several ribbons to his collection, and he and his sister share success with Unbelievable Jazzibelle in both spotted and Tennessee Walking Horse shows. Vivian is following in her brother’s footsteps, winning her own world grand championship in lead line in 2021 riding Rattle and Snap. Following his championship ride in the show ring on Saturday morning, Sterling was recognized as a member of the winning junior judging team from Bedford County for 2023 and had the opportunity to judge beside the official judges for a class at the Celebration. Sterling’s favorite mount, however, might be his pony Whiskey Hollow Shiney, who was purchased as a yearling five years ago from Tony Edwards. Trained since then by Sterling himself, Shiney has been successful at Spotted Saddle Horse shows in both spotted pleasure, model, and racking pleasure. But showing isn’t all Sterling and Shiney do together. Trail riding has taken them on adventures in Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and, for the past three years, they have become a force to be reckoned with in the youth field trial world. Sterling’s dog, Piney Wood Mae is a tenacious bird dog and Shiney is a steady and tireless mount. Combined with the focus of their handler, they, along with his other dog Sammy, are always a threat in competition. Mae was the Shenandoah Plantation Youth Field Trial Top Dog in 2022. In just three years of field trial competition, Sterling attained the title of Youth Handler of the Year for the Alabama Field Trial Association. Sterling’s greatgreat grandfather, Wallace Woodruff, was a dog trainer himself, and Sterling seems to have inherited an aptitude for working with hunting dogs from him. His great uncle, Johnny Woodruff was on hand at the banquet for Sterling’s handler of the year award in Alabama this June, representing Wallace’s memory. In his spare time, Sterling travels with his grandfather, Woody Woodruff, Sr., who has been shoeing horses since age 13. “I drove my first nail into a hoof this year,” he says. He also is a ring man for his father’s auction business and loves to hunt. “Deer, turkey, ducks, and doves,” he explains, “and some trapping too.” When asked what his favorite thing is, he doesn’t have to think long. “I would have to say field trialing,” he answers. Woody talks enthusiastically about his son’s success in the field. “In one competition, he and his dog found and pointed five birds in seven minutes,” he says. “We couldn’t keep up with him. He has Shiney ground tying real good and he can jump off, flush the bird, shoot the gun and be back on before most other people can flush the birds. Then they lope off for the next find.” He laughs. “I was his scout, but I found somebody younger to do it.” He and Bradon Renfroe share scout duties now. He also tells of the time Sterling’s dog was on point on one of the Alabama plantations and Sterling flushed a covey of 15 birds. “He competes against kids a lot older than he is,” he says, “but he holds his own.” Several people have helped get Sterling where he is now. Woodruff says, “It is thanks to a lot of folks who have influenced Sterling and kept him motivated in the Tennessee Walking Horse business. Davd Roberts, Robert Moorer, Ryan Blackburn have been mentors. And his professional direction and influence has come from Brett Boyd, Kristin Lovern, Karen McGee, Joe Fleming, Justin Harris and Dickie Gardner.” The story of this boy and his horse and his dogs is just beginning. What comes next for this young horseman, hunter, ring-man, farrier, dog trainer? Friends, fans, and family can’t wait to see the next chapter, that is, if they can keep up! Larry Bright Receives Evan Lloyd Adamson Humanitarian Award Ladies and gentlemen, The Celebration, in conjunction with the family of the late Evan Lloyd Adamson, are proud to present one of our most prestigious awards. The Evan Lloyd Adamson Humanitarian Award is named in honor of the former Celebration Ringmaster, Association Member, and Director. The award is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated “outstanding service and commitment” to The Celebration. The person honored will be a volunteer, Celebration staff member, or staff member of an organization supporting The Celebration. The winner will have their name inscribed on a plaque in the main Celebration office listing all the winners as well as a cash honorarium. The Celebration and the Adamson Family are proud to announce that the 2023 winner of this award is Mr. Larry Bright. For most of us, if we close our eyes and think about some of our favorite Celebration memories, it’s the voice of Bobby Sands and the music of Larry Bright that we hear. 40 years ago, Larry Bright sat down at his organ for the first time at The Celebration - and he was an instant hit. From the first note of “It’s a Grand Old Flag” we were all members of the Larry Bright Fan Club. It’s a club that not only includes Celebration fans, but others from major equestrian events across the country - like the 1984 Olympics, the National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden, the Southern Championships in Montgomery, Alabama, Dixie Jubilee in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Pin Oak Charity in Houston, Texas. They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, and Larry has been imitated so often that it’s easy to forget how original he is and how much he’s changed The Celebration experience. No one told Larry to play “It’s a Grand Old Flag” as the flag horse circled the arena each night. He knew that it was the perfect song for the occasion - and he was correct. There’s not an organist’s handbook that says you should play state songs for the winners on their victory pass or try to find the most appropriate song title for the name of the horse. Although I could argue that Larry has now written the handbook for horse show organists to follow, he didn’t need one to tell him that “Puttin on the Ritz” was the perfect song for a horse named He’s Puttin on the Ritz, or “Splish Splash I Was Taking a Bath” for a horse named Splash. Without looking, I knew that Nancy Groover was in the ring when I heard Larry play “Yellow Rose of Texas,” or Jean Baum was in the ring when he was playing “On Wisconsin.” Larry’s intuition and musical genius knew that we’d love hearing “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” as his first song on Sunday night, and we’d join in when he played all shook up. Again, he was correct. Announcers who worked with him greatly appreciated songs like “Puttin on the Ritz” during a fine harness class, or “Hot Stuff” during a deeply competitive class - they give us a great segway to say something that makes us seem smarter than we are. Larry can feed us lines just by playing the best song for the moment. The following was read by Celebration Announcer Mark Farrar on Saturday night, September 2, 2023. The Voice • October 2023 90
And then there are Larry’s two signature songs - “I Love You Just the Way You Are” and his original “Flat Walk Boogie,” which he first played at the Southern Championships in Montgomery, Alabama in 1977 and has since become the anthem of the walking horse nation. “I Love You Just the Way You Are” is the final song he plays each night as a tribute to his late wife Sonya. Of course, the “Flat Walk Boogie” is what he played for all of the biggest moments, including the World Grand Championship Stake. Long after we’re all gone and the next generation is sitting in our seats, I’m confident that the “Flat Walk Boogie” and Larry Bright’s legacy, will still ring through the Big Oval and bring the fans to their feet. Larry is at home in Tylertown, Mississippi and unable to be here tonight, but Dean Johnson Video is recording this presentation for him. This is our chance to show our appreciation to one of the most beloved members of The Celebration family and let him know how much we love and appreciate him. Larry, you’ve provided to soundtrack to some of our favorite memories and we’ll always love you just the way you are.
