The Hydraulics and Hydrology Laboratory is currently placed under the Department of Water and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Civil Engineering. This laboratory is currently served by six technical staff. It is headed by a laboratory coordinator, four assistant engineers and one assistant operation who will look after the development the technical aspects and maintenance of the equipment from time to time. Detailed information about the organisation structure of Hydraulics and Hydrology Laboratory can be found on next page. This laboratory is equipped with various sizes of flumes or open channel models. Various types of hydraulics and hydrology related equipment are also available in this laboratory. In more specific terms, the Hydraulics and Hydrology Laboratory is divided into two labs: a teaching laboratory and a research laboratory. Teaching laboratory is used for teaching undergraduate students which involved laboratory exercises. Meanwhile, research laboratory comprised of large area equipped with physical models and advanced instrumentation used by postgraduate students in conducting their research. A unique feature of the Hydraulics and Hydrology Laboratory is the linkage with the industry and public bodies, which is integral to the department’s approach to research, education and knowledge exchange. This water related laboratory is closely involved with several prominent local and international water industries, water resource related organizations and universities through academic links and consultancy projects. The department under its Water Engineering section aims to deliver scientific breakthrough which will lead to solutions by establishing several research groups under the umbrella of the Water Research Alliance. In addition, several staff from this section have served as leaders of water research alliance and national agencies. The Water Engineering staff are also actively involved in various consultancy works led by the Centres of Excellent (COE) in UTM such as the Centre for Environmental Sustainability and Water Security IPASA and Centre for River and Coastal Engineering, CRCE (formerly known as COEI). HYDRAULICS & HYDROLOGY LABORATORY HR WALLINGFORD WAVE FLUME DESCRIPTION : EQUIPMENT / TESTING: It is used for coastal studies to optimise and validate sections of breakwater before moving on to more complex 3D analyses. The dimensions are 30 meter long and 1 meter wide. The flume is equipped with a wavemaker that can produce both regular and random waves. The main application of the flume is generally to test wave actions on beaches and various coastal structures in lab-scaled models using an advanced HR Wallingford wave generation system. 106

ONSET HOBO RG3-M RAIN GAUGE (METRIC) DATA LOGGER DESCRIPTION : EQUIPMENT / TESTING: Onset HOBO RG3-M Rain Gauge is a batterypowered rainfall data collection and recording system. A HOBO® Pendant Event data logger has been integrated into a tipping-bucket rain gauge. This model automatically records up to 3200 mm of rainfall data that can be used to determine rainfall rates, times and duration. Also, records temperature when used with an optional solar radiation shield (RS1 Solar Radiation Shield, or M-RSA). A base station or shuttle is required. The Surveying Unit of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UTM oversees the surveying or geomatics needs of the faculty and faculty’s community.
