A bunch of ‘thank yous’ to all deserving people

As you reach the finish line in this leg of your journey in education, I amMPersseagseifrdoem tnhte
delighted to congratulate you all for your achievement. I also warmly
congratulate your teachers, parents, benefactors and those who take care of
you and respond to your needs. On this memorable day, I thank God for His
abundant graces and loving guidance that made this milestone possible.
The Department of Education has its theme for this year’s graduation ceremonies,
Mag-aaral ng K-12: Handa sa Hamon ng Buhay (K-12 Learners: Ready to Face Life’s
Challenges). Life is a story with colourful episodes of hard work and success.
Achievements can only be attained after surpassing tests, trials and travails. I believe
De La Salle ASMC has prepared you to face squarely life’s realities.
Teaching you well to become critical thinkers, effective communicators,
professionally competent, socially and ecologically responsible and morally upright
individuals is our priceless present to each one of you. This gift of quality education
allows determined individuals to reach heights and realize dreams. Along the way,
there will be challenges to face, chances to either hit or miss and choices to make.
Your safety net is your good training and formidable character formation.
In every graduation, we always hear great stories of hard work and sacrifice that
warm the heart and inspire us to carry on. One of these stories may be yours or that of
the person beside you. With the brand of education your Alma Mater provides, it is for
you to seek your own great story and discover ways to make your dreams come true.
With our dedicated Board of Trustees, administrators, academic and non-teaching
personnel, I can confidently say that De La Salle ASMC has been faithful to its mission.
Coupled with the financial and moral support of your parents and benefactors, the
knowledge, values, attitudes, and skills you acquired will enable you to achieve
further. The call is now for you to nurture the seeds of success you received.
As individuals imbued with the Christian virtues and Lasallian values, may you strive
to be salt of the earth. Always live a life of prayer. Aim high and continue to be a
blessing to your family and to everyone who needs you most.
May you always make De La Salle ASMC proud of you for the glory of God.
Congratulations! Animo La Salle!

The Five P’s

With hard work and dedication, we have at one time or another, sat where you, the Graduates, and
Completers, now sit. We have listened to speeches by many people who have tried their best to say
something meaningful and worthwhile that will help the graduating students in the next stage and
also remember the message throughout their lives. Of the many speeches that I have heard through
various graduations for myself, and those that I attended to witness the graduation of my family and friends, the best
speeches and the most profound message has been a very simple one—never stop learning.
The De La Salle ASMC Mission is to “develop critical thinkers, effective communicators, competent and morally
upright individuals, socially and ecologically responsible citizens by providing a conducive learner-friendly
environment that promotes love for God and country.” Although, De La Salle ASMC provides a “conducive learner-
friendly environment” the students “are co-responsible for creating a culture and climate to genuine learning….” All
of us must work to do that, even when we leave the traditional educational institution.
Learning doesn’t, and shouldn’t, end when you graduate from school—it continues throughout your entire life. It is
both formal and informal. The formal part are the classes or training you take part in to attain a specific educational
goal. The informal takes place both inside and outside the classroom or training facility. It is something that happens
every day through your interaction with others. It includes your family members, your friends, your co-workers, your
teachers and everyone else that you come in contact with every day.
Although I have been blessed with an excellent formal education, and for that I am very thankful to my parents, my
teachers, and the educational institutions that provided me with an environment where I could learn. I have also
learned, and continue to do so, through my interaction with everyone around me. And for that I am very grateful as
well.
The best lessons we learn, and the knowledge we gain from simply talking with, but more importantly, listening to
others occurs when that is coupled with the formal training we receive.
I have learned many things over the years since I had my last graduation ceremony—all of them useful, but some have
been learned the hard way—through failure. Sometimes failing at something you try is the best learning experience,
so never be afraid to try. It is only through trying that we succeed, and success does not always come on the first try,
it can take many attempts, or a change in the way in which we make the attempt, to succeed. A very wise person once
told me that “we learn more from our failures, than our successes.” And so, by that measure, I have learned a lot.
To give you some “words of wisdom” that you can take away, and also so I can fulfill the wish of Dr. Paragados, perhaps
I can summarize some of the lessons I have learned in five words that are easy to remember. They are: Patience,
Persistence, Practice, Pride, and Positive.
First, Patience: things take time. You have to be patient with yourself and others. Sometimes things take years. Don’t
be discouraged if things don’t happen immediately. As people like to say “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”
Second, Persistence: because things take time you must also be persistent, you must stick with it along with being
patient. You must learn to deal with the road blocks and other obstacles that are put in your way while trying to
achieve your goal.
Third, Practice: to get good at anything, or to master a skill, you must practice. Practice comes in many forms—some
of it organized, much of it is not. You learn by practicing—basketball players or pianists or dancers or teachers or
policemen or anyone else doing any activity doesn’t get good at what they do overnight, they must apply what they
have learned and keep learning to progress and get better. Your natural talent reinforced by practice allows you to
master a task or skill.
Fourth, Pride: you must be proud of who you are and what you have already accomplished as Graduates, or as
Completers. You have been well prepared by De La Salle ASMC to meet any challenge that you may face. You should be
confident in yourself and know that you have the ability to continue to learn and to work with others to help you, and
them, succeed.
Finally, Positive: you must always try to stay positive. Life has a way of letting you down and disappointing you, and
giving you burdens. However, when a burden gets too heavy, reach out to those around you and ask for their support.
All of us will need help from others at one time or another. Do not be afraid to ask for help.

4

One of the things about remaining positive is that sometimes something very good can happen after something bad
or disappointing has occurred.
For me, ten years ago I suffered a setback in my career and had to leave a place where I thought I would spend the rest
of my years working. It is only because of leaving that career did I first have the opportunity to visit the Philippines in
2008. During my visit here I was fortunate to meet Dr. Paragados, and through Dr. Paragados’s suggestion, become a
benefactor for De La Salle ASMC. I stand before you today precisely because something bad happened to me. But that
bad thing set me on a new path that led me to something very, very good. I have become involved in the lives of the
students here at De La Salle ASMC, and that is something that fills me with pride every day.
Not only do I have a connection to the Philippines through my association with De La Salle ASMC. I also work with
proud Filipinos at Lloyds Bank in New York City. On a daily basis I interact with many of my colleagues you see in the
photograph. As a matter of fact two of the ladies in the photo are from Cebu: Emy Igot and Leah Gorospe. Another
colleague, Irene Simon, also has a connection to De La Salle ASMC. Her first job after college was with the A. Soriano
Corporation. When my colleagues heard that I was coming to De La Salle ASMC to speak to the Graduates and
Completers they graciously offered to pose for a photograph to be shown at today’s Ceremony in the hopes that they
would serve as an inspiration to the Graduates and Completers and to their friends and family, and to all the students
at De La Salle ASMC.
They have also made a generous donation to the general scholarship fund of De La Salle ASMC in the name of the
Filipino Association of Lloyds Bank.
So, in conclusion, to you the Graduates, and the Completers, I wish you the very best as you start on the new path that
is before you.
Congratulations and best wishes for the future, and remember, never stop learning.
Daghang Salamat!
Atty. Damien B. Kelly

It’s a new academic year. Some friends have gone, some have stayed and a new set of
pretty faces has come along the way. ‘Such a happy place!’ as the slogan sets the tone
in welcoming everyone as we #ExperienceLaSalle again.
Different afternoons during the first month were set aside for parties in their
respective departments. Games were played, food was served and merry-making has
started that proved to last the whole year.

the grade school classes for a week. The program was made to strengthen the bond between Lasallian
families in the two district schools. Pleasantries were exchanged and a new friendship was made.

Pista ng Bayan

August is a Filipino Heritage Month. Different activities were held to celebrate the diverse cultures found in the
islands. It is the time when we have to be careful with our choice Filipiniana dresses that should not be mistaken
with our mother’s drapes. It is also the time when we can take a break in speaking English provided we have to speak
in Tagalog all month. So we continue speaking in English instead. It may be uncomfortable for some, but we made it
festive in every way anyway.

Intramural Games 1

Each year, every student’s wish is to have the Intrams extended.
Wish granted when the weather was not cooperating on the
second day. Different games were postponed later even to
several weeks after the Intrams. I bet we will only wish for a
better weather next year. Albeit, it was a one long haul of games
and prolonged excitement.

Trivia: the word intramural is from intra- ‘within’ + Latin murus ‘wall’ which
literally means ‘within the walls’. The first intramural sports departments were
established at Ohio State University and the University of Michigan in 1913.

beginning of a special time in a young
person’s life. Scout-aged children are
entering the stage of life when they desire
to break away from their parents, find out
about the world, and try to shape their own
identity in it. It is Scouting’s desire that a
major part of the identity that these young
people form is that of being a Scout.

which was, by the way, prepared by the
