A Living Boat Making Museum KUALTAOTUENRGEENGOGF ANU
Boat Making Industry is one actively produce
in Terengganu, concentrated in Pulau Duyong, MARITIME HISTORY
one of the heritage place in the East Coast BTORAATDBITUIIOLDNIANLG
region. People from other countries also
demanding this amazing craftmanship to sail ApLparceknotifce BBuillutewpirtihnotsut ELxapcoksuorfe
in the sea safely.
Today, traditional boat making in Malaysia DESIGN APPROACH
appears to be a dying trade. Indeed, the A Platform to LEARN
number of boat builders from Pulau Duyong
has dwindled to just a few. Demand for A Place to ARCHIVE
younger generation in the craft is important
to keep this heritage industry alive. It would A Place to EXPOSE
be a sad state of event if this industry is not
revived soon. (Beautiful Terengganu, 2018)
Lack of apprentices, lack of demand for
traditional boats and the traditional boat are
buit without plan and blueprints. The above
issues lead toward the end of the traditional
boat building legacy. Now their economic are
dwindled and facing the issue of extinction
due to its low position in the market.
But this creative industry is a big opportunity
for Terengganu in elevating their tourism-
economic goal, as stated in PITAS 2035, local
heritage and culture as the main source of
income of the east country.
The aim of this thesis is to establish an living
boat-building museum that encourages the
community to participate in and learn about
this industry, restoring Pulau Duyong’s golden
age. With the objectives to investigate the
issues and needs faced by the traditional
boat building community, to analyse the
building characteristics that encourage
community and elevate the industry and to
create a living museum emcompassing the
architectural features and characteristics
that promotes boat building through effective
programs and spaces.

accomodation and facilities. Suits to this site, this
project can be the main visitor centre of Pulau Duyung
due to several strength such as location, accesibility
and the genius loci of the traditional boat making
itself.

A Communal Space for Fishery Economic +RICH IN HIGH IN
In response towards the generations gap or DEMAND
cultural chasm that grows rapidly, A fishermen CULTURE
hub is proposed as alternative solution to
the issue in Penang in order to rejuvenate the 1provide facilities for but 3enhance local
fishing village culture. The project creates a the fishermen, local POOR IN fishermen’s place
community learning center whose focuses on and tourist FINANCIAL on physical
providing knowledge about fishery from the
culture to the skill to local, tourists, and students. 2 identify solutions
The fish centre which will act as a new landmark to improve fishery
also brings community together by exploring local economy
and venture into something new where it
creates development through experiences
by the design of desirable spaces. This will
improve the livehood of fishermen by providing
them conventional space with better facilities,
provides employment and enjoyment for local
and tourist.

Strategies are envisaged to realize
the ideal community and environment include
vitalizing attitude of openness, cultivating lifelong
learning culture and enliven positive interaction
within people from various backgrounds. It also
suggested sustainable economic strategies for
better fishing and marketing method in order
to improve local economy in relation to place
attachment. One other sector that can capitalise
on the availability of fresh goods, adoption of
technological commercialisation, ease mobility
of goods and products and innovative mode
of transportation is local vendor’s production.
Provision of spaces for local vendors are also
taken into context, as most of these business
operates from their homes, and lack effective
mode of delivery. Production spaces for these
type of business is critical to reinvigorate the
small-scale business sector, allowing for more
ease of business as most of the services located
in a one-stop service building.

Potential to become a main point for fishery centre as this land is provided
by government specific for fishermen community activities. The area are still
active with fishery activities like Pasar Malam Bagan Ajam as commercial
place for fishermen selling their fishery product and the current jetty for
fishing. This will act as potential to the project and surrounded by fishermen

SOUND TECHNOLOGY
Sound technology produces
sound energy that reflects the
auditorium wall panel then
it depends on that acoustic
panel whether it was absorbed

The site is currently located between the river and the
mangrove park in the community area. Because the small river 4
connected to the Langat River, the site has the potential to be a Ecolodge
boat and fishing hub. The actual site boundary will include the river
in the centre of the site. The site’s entrance is next to a recreational
mangrove park. This can also help to strengthen the center’s sense
of welcoming visitors. One of the special site features that can lead
to the integration of the building structure is the integration of the

water area and the land area.
