About KUPTM About KUPTM

Kolej Poly-Tech MARA (KPTM), formerly known as Kolej Yayasan
Pelajaran MARA (KYPM) was established as a private higher
educational institution under the Private Higher Educational
Institutions Act 1996 (Act 555) in September 2003. Managed by
Kolej Poly-Tech MARA Sdn. Bhd., a wholly owned subsidiary of
Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), KPTM offers a wide range of
educational opportunities in the field of information technology,
computer science, accounting, business management, engineering
and health sciences.

It all started in January 1983 with the establishment of the Learning Resource Centre in Kota
Bharu, Kelantan. In June 1983 Maktab Sains MARA (also known as MARA Community College)
in Kuantan, Pahang was formed. At that time, it offered a twinning programme known as the
American Associate Degree (AAD). The programmed was well accepted by more than 75

universities in the United States and New Zealand as a 2+2
transfer degree programme. This remarkable achievement
later led to the establishment of KPTM Kuala Lumpur
(1987), KPTM Bangi (1988) and KPTM Kota Bharu (1994).

Other international strategic alliances were formed with the
Northern Consortium of the United Kingdom (1988), the
Australian Consortium of Higher Education in Malaysia
(1994) and the British Consortium of Higher Education in
Malaysia (1994) which enabled students to further their
studies in a number of reputable universities in the UK and
Australia. 1993 saw another alliance formed with the Dublin Business School, Ireland to conduct
the ACCA professional accounting programme. A Partnership with Coventry University, United
Kingdom (2004) has led to initiatives in producing world class graduates. KPTM’s existing
strength was built through its excellent track record and the merging of 2 MARA’s renowned
institutions i.e. Kolej Yayasan Pelajaran MARA (KYPM) and Akademi Infotech MARA (AIM).
KPTM has grown to be among the biggest Bumiputra private educational institutions with more
12,500 full time students spread over 7 campuses, with Kuala Lumpur as the main campus and
branches in Bangi, Kuantan, Kota Bharu, Alor Setar, Ipoh, Batu Pahat and Semporna.

KPTM also established local collaboration with the public and private universities such as
Universiti Teknologi MARA (1994), Universiti Putra Malaysia (1995), Universiti Malaya (1995),
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (1996), Universiti Sains Malaysia (1996), Universiti Multimedia
(1998), Universiti Utara Malaysia and also the Matriculation Centre, Ministry of Education
Malaysia (1999). KPTM has stridden through another historical milestone in its excellent journey
in academia recently when its Kuala Lumpur branch was upgraded to a full university college
status. Today, since October 2015, KPTM KL is proudly known as Kolej Universiti Poly-Tech
MARA (KUPTM), offering high quality home-grown degree programmes in the area of
Accountancy, Communication, Human Resources, English and Information Security. With this
progress, KUPTM is ever ready to produce more quality and professional Bumiputera who are
able to function resiliently and effectively at the global stage.

ABSTRACT

Facial electromyography is myoelectric signals that formed by human facial muscles. This signal
can be acquired by attaching an electrode to the facial muscle that has been connected with an
electromyography sensor. When human say certain words, the articulation muscles contract and
facial electromyography signals appear in the muscles. This study aims to recognize patterns in
facial electromyography signals by classifying signals using naïve bayes and learning vector
quantization classifier. Feature extraction used one-dimensional discrete wavelet transforms.
Wavelet transform type used wavelet daubechies2 level 5. The transformation produces a level
5 approximation coefficient called a5 and five detail coefficients called d1, d2, d3, d4, and d5. The
result of this study show that the average classification accuracy for ho neuk jak sentence using
naïve bayes and LVQ classifier was 62.5% and 92.5% respectively. The average classification
accuracy for ja’ word using naïve bayes and LVQ classifier was 70% and 92.5% respectively. The
average classification accuracy for ja’ wo sentence using naïve bayes and LVQ classifier was
52.5% and 90% respectively. The average classification accuracy for pane word using naïve
bayes and LVQ was 70% and 90% respectively. The average classification accuracy for soe word
using naïve bayes and LVQ classifier is 85% and 95% respectively. Thus, this study shows that
when humans say the words, facial electromyography signals that appear on facial muscles
difference for each subject.

ABSTRACT

The quality of nutmeg oil is determined by the quality of the nutmeg and the technology that are
used in the purification process of the nutmeg. For instance, the distillation process will affect the
yield and the essential quality of the production of the nutmeg oil are involving the boiler material,
cooling system, and boiler design. The existing nutmeg oil distillation system is time consuming
because the operators are highly depending on the firewood and the operators who must monitor
closely throughout the time during the nutmeg oil refining process. The new distillation process
and technique is based on the new type of boiler that is made from Stainless steel 304 with a
diameter of 70 cm, length 120 cm, and with the thickness of 3 mm. The Boiler also comes with a
new control system to precisely control the pressure and temperature. Meanwhile, the excess
pressure of the boiler is controlled by pressure safety valve because the boiler is designed to
withstand up to 3 bar maximum pressure capacity. The kettle is made of 304 Stainless steel
equipped with a multi-storey baskets to polish and to enhance the circulation and vapour pressure
inside the boiler. The condenser pipes are made from the aluminium pipe to maximise the
condensation process of the raw nutmeg oil. For the new distillation process, the hybrid system
are utilised, where the sources of firewood and electricity are used as the source of energy to
operate the boiler. It can be seen that hybrid kettle design reaches 2.8 tons with a 30% operating-
saving cost. On top of that distillation time can be shortened to 48 hours from the previous 72
hours. It is stated that this hybrid boiler system is much more effective when compared to
conventional systems. Laboratory test results stated that the distilled nutmeg oil has fulfilled the
Indonesian national standard.

ABSTRACT
Phishing is a form of cyberattack that the attacker will masquerade as a trusted entity or a
legitimate company or organization that the victims might have business with or related with it and
try to deceive victims in providing their sensitive and personal data such as personally identifiable
information, financial account details, password and more through emails, websites, telephone,
or text message. Several anti-phishing techniques like whitelist or blacklist of URLs have been
implemented to reduce the phishing attacks. These techniques are now inefficient for combating
phishing as the amount of phishing sites is growing rapidly whereas the techniques used to create
the lists are unable to keep up with. Hence, a machine learning-based phishing website detection
tool is proposed to replace the blacklist technique in combating phishing. Machine learning is
applied to the system so it can have the ability to learn the provided data and improve from
experience heuristically. Through the implementation of machine learning in phishing detection
tool, it gains the ability to learn based on the provided phishing’s characteristics and make
decisions after analysing without being explicitly programmed

ABSTRACT
Mortality reduction factor is one of the important measures that can be used to describe the
mortality situation in a particular country. Mortality reduction factors are the main key to express
and forecast historic mortality movement. Overlooking in the analysis of this factor may cause
several problems such as inability to detect mortality problems which will subsequently lead to
overcharging of insurance premiums. This paper focuses on analyzing the value of mortality
reduction factors in Malaysia by using generalize linear model, and the accuracy of future mortality
rates in comparison to the Lee-Carter model. On average, the result shows that the reduction of
mortality rates for male is greater than the reduction in female. This study also found that there is
an outlier in the value of the mortality reduction factor for female ages 74 to 95. After comparing
the accuracy with Lee-Carter model, it can be summarized that the Lee-Carter model is better in
predicting future mortality rates. However, we also found that mortality reduction factor can be
benefited as a tools or measures to make an early detection of mortality problems.

ABSTRACT
Wireless connection such as 802.11 and cellular networks is preferred for internet connections
as its quick set up and mobility. However, radio propagations are prone to signal errors, noises
and interferences. Even more powerful modulations and coding were developed, they do not
change the nature of error sensitive in wireless link. When network link worsens, the available
bandwidth decreases. This exerts problems for the user speed requirement. This paper examines
layer two compression to maintain bandwidth requirement on decreasing link quality. The 802.11
network simulations based on Bianchi model and Shannon theory show that the compression
technique on layer two increases throughput about 10.27%, although delay increases about two
times.

ABSTRACT

Recently, conducting polymers have attracted much interest in the development of biosensor. It
contain π- electron backbone responsible for its unusual electronic properties such as electrical
conductivity, low energy optical transitions, low ionization potential and high electron affinity.
When the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was immobilized to the conducting polymers, these
polymers possesses the ability to bind oppositely charged complex entities in their neutral
insulating state. Determination of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and other organic peroxides is of
practical importance in clinical, environmental and many other fields. This study intends to see
the role and properties of PANI/HRP layer towards H2O2 by measuring its current. Langmuir-
blodgett technique was used to form the PANI monolayer and the HRP was deposited in PANI
monolayer by using electrodeposition method. Results from Ultraviolet- Visible spectroscopy (UV-
Vis.) spectrum of PANI with and without HRP shows two sharp absorption peaks at 320 nm and
720 nm. PANI forms as nanoparticles was revealed by Variable Pressure- Scanning Electron
Microscope (VP-SEM). Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) shows the image in roughness before
and after the HRP was deposited on PANI monolayer. The current and response of H2O2 towards
PANI/HRP electrode increases demonstrating effective electrocatalytic reduction of H2O2.
PANI/HRP electrode not only act as excellent materials for rapid electron transfer but also for the
fabrication of efficient biosensors.

ABSTRACT
In Polyurethane blocks have been widely used in the automotive, aerospace industry serving as
fixtures and auxiliary tooling. They have also been extensively used in creating patterns for
composite moulds and for landscapes design models. An EDX analysis reveals the composition
of PU block to comprise of sodium, silicon, aluminum, carbon and oxygen as major constituents.
PU blocks are shaped by machining (milling & turning) to suit to the respective applications.
Machining of PU blocks lack definite and proven data in terms of Machining parameters and
conditions, and the research is ongoing in this domain. This paper discusses extensively on the
influence of coolant on the machining process of PU blocks. An experimental design is executed
on a milling machine with different levels of standard machining parameters of cutting speed, feed
rate and depth of cut combined with two different conditions of coolant namely dry cutting in which
the coolant is absent and flood cutting where in there is a continuous flow of coolant focused on
the cutting point. The responses measured here are the surface roughness and the surface
conditions – presence of craters, cracks on the surface. This study aims to determine the changes
on the initial material caused by the presence and absence of coolant. It has been observed
through designed experiments that the PU board itself due to its porosity and its chemical
composition tends to absorb the coolant causing surface changes. It has also been determined
that dry machining produces a better surface finish that the flood machined blocks.

ABSTRACT
Titanium is in the category of hard-to-cut materials due to its unique chemical composition. The
two types of titanium most widely used for industrial applications are commercially pure titanium
grade 2 (CP2) and titanium alloy Ti6Al4V. They are extensively used in the aerospace and
automotive industry among others due to their strength to weight ratio. Titanium Ti6Al4V is much
harder as its brinell hardness number (BHN) is 334 whereas the commercially pure (CP2) titanium
grade 2 brinell hardness number (BHN) is only 130. Even though many innovations were made
in terms of cutting tools, cutting parameters and cutting conditions, industries are still facing
problems in machining titanium. In this paper, a review will be made on the various elements such
as machining parameters which includes some of the key parameters namely depth of cut, cutting
speed and feed rate. Furthermore, the types of coolant used are examined especially the usage
of cryogenic coolant that has shown some promising outcome in terms of extending the tool life,
decreasing tool failure and also improving the surface quality. In addition, another element that is
highlighted in this review paper is the cutting tool material which includes high speed steel, coated
and uncoated carbide. It is studied that titanium alloy has a very low thermal conductivity, so
during a machining process 80% of the heat generated at the cutting zone is absorbed by the
cutting tool resulting in chips sticking to the cutting tool and also producing a bad surface quality.

[email protected], [email protected]
ABSTRACT
Throughout the last decade magnesium alloys have slowly overtaken aluminum alloys, especially
in the automotive and aerospace industry. Due to its attractive weight-resistance and weight-
hardness characteristics, the global production of Magnesium alloys has grown from 360,000 tons
in 1999 to 850,000 tons in 2013. Magnesium alloys AZ91 and AZ31 are the most widely used
grades.AZ 91 exhibits a knoop’s hardness (HK) of 76.2 that is higher to the AZ31 with a 51.1 HK.
The manufacturing of AZ 91 is through a casting process whereas AZ31 is manufactured by using
an extrusion process. The microstructure of AZ31 and AZ91 are highly influenced by the heat
generated during the machining process that also affects the surface hardness due to the high
thermal conductivity of the material that range from 62 W/m.k to 96W/m.k. Both materials have a
very good machinability where milling, drilling, and turning are commonly used. However, extreme
care should be taken in terms of machining conditions as Magnesium alloy is highly flammable.
However, a safe machining process can be performed by avoiding very fine chips, magnesium
dust and also the usage of water based coolants that react with the raw material. This paper has
widely reviewed the studies that have been conducted since the evolution of magnesium alloys
in terms of machining parameters, machining consumables and their effect on the mechanical
properties, surface conditions and limitations of the various machining processes.

ABSTRACT

In The finite element method (FEM) modeling and simulation has a growing attention from
researchers for a better analysis on multiple factors that occur in milling process such as cutting
forces and temperature build up. In this paper, a review on the application of FEM modelling and
simulation in the milling operation of commercially pure titanium grade 2 (CP2) is discussed. A
summary on the past work performed in the area of FEM of dynamic milling process related to
pure titanium CP2 is presented. Cutting forces and temperature analysis are among the key
elements that were constantly taken into consideration due to their impact on the surface integrity
and production cost. CP2 is also an emerging material among the automotive and aviation
industries due to its very attractive mechanical properties. The application of FEM to analyse the
milling process of CP2 is very critical as it is a hard to cut material that require both a high degree
of cutting forces and also generate a high temperature mainly because of the hardness that is
130 at the brinell hardness number (BHN).

ABSTRACT

The thin sheet metals which are light and formability to be formed into a desired shape in forming
the mechanical structures such as automotive and aerospace structures. In the automotive
structure, components are usually made from thin metal sheets and joined together by mechanical
joints such as spot welds, bolted joints and rivets in order to form a full assembled structure.
Understandably, the jointed structure is susceptible to local deformations during the assembly
process, particularly at the jointing areas. As a result, the deformations will alter the dynamic
behaviour of the jointed structure. Meanwhile, the mathematical model is normally calculated and
constructed on the basis of the idealisation and simplification of designs and it is essentially to
have an accurate mathematical model with the inclusion of the local effects when predicting the
dynamic behaviour of jointed structures. However, to incorporate the local effects at the mating
area of the joints such as slip, contact and pre-load in the mathematical model is very challenging
and cumbersome.

In this paper, the inclusion of the local effects at the bolted joints mating area is represented by
contact element and tested. The connector element of CFAST in MSC NASTRAN are used to
model the bolted joints. The accuracy of the proposed finite element model is compared with the
experimental counterparts. The modal based updating methods are then used to minimise the
discrepancies between the predicted and experimental results. The proposed method shows that
the discrepancies of updated finite element model of the bolted joints structure is reduced from
25.03 percent to 14.65 percent and the improvement can be seen for all first five frequencies and
together with the MAC value which is above 0.8. Therefore, the findings offer useful method for
improving the quality of predicted modal parameters, particularly in the thin-sheet metal jointed
structure subsequently the model can be used for subsequent analysis required.

ABSTRACT
Structural design and analysis requires accurate and precise finite element model in order to have
a structure with high safety conditions such as aerospace, offshore and civil structures. However,
the predicted results of the finite element model are often considerably different from the
experimental results due to the modelling assumptions and simplifications on the properties and
parameters of the actual structure. This paper presents the finite element modelling and updating
methods on the thin plate structure. The modal parameters obtained from the plate are measured
by experimental modal analysis by using an impact hammer and roving accelerometers method
under free-free boundary conditions. The initial modal parameters are predicted by numerical
analysis using normal mode analysis via NASTRAN SOL 103. The accuracy of the natural
frequencies and the mode shapes obtained from the initial finite element model are compared
with the measured counterparts. The modal based updating methods using NASTRAN SOL 200
is applied to update the properties of the plate. In conclusion, updating the material properties of
the plate is successfully achieved. The total error of the initial finite element model of the plate is
reduce from 45.12 per cent to 6.28 per cent respectively.

ABSTRACT
E-wallet, also known as digital wallet, is becoming popular in use as one of payment methods
nowadays. With the emergence of security concern on Internet of Things (IoT), the use of two-
factor authentication can be seen as an extra countermeasure to protect personally identifiable
information (PII) and privileged account information. The objective of this study is to propose a
secure method to unlock E-wallet application by using NFC tag which acts as two-factor
authentication (2FA). In this study, we address the security of E-wallet by providing a two-factor
authentication and identifying some unique design requirements in terms of security protection.
We also discuss other methods of authentication including PIN number and password, graphical
password and biometric. We then propose a new approach to secure the unlocking mechanism
on E-wallet by using NFC tag.

ABSTRACT
The data from building inspection is typically recorded in the form of description. The data
compilation process of building inspection data is time consuming, especially during site
inspection. The process is time consuming due to the time required to describe the defect
description on site, in addition to the need to transform and analyse the descriptive data into
presentable information. To solve this problem, the existing Condition Survey Protocol (CSP) 1
Matrix has been improved, aimed at reducing the time taken to produce building inspection
reports. In this study, the CSP1 Matrix is optimized through the development of a computer
application to implement the Matrix, which automates the analysis and computation process
(usually done through manual means). This study focuses on the development of the CSP1 Matrix
computer program using Visual Basic (VB) and MySQL. Using the computer application, the end
user (i.e. surveyor) will be able to retrieve the building inspection data in a quick and precise
manner, with reduced chances of error during computation. Thus, the process of documenting
existing building defects can be made with ease, and the overall building rating based on the
CSP1 Matrix can be automatically calculated. In addition, the executive summary of the building
inspection can be generated. The developed computer application was found to be an effective
solution to implement the CSP1 Matrix in an efficient manner, which saves time, reduces
computational errors and is able to deliver a building inspection final report instantaneously after
the data processing is completed.

ABSTRACT
Candlenut shell contained organic compound, such as hemicelluloses, cellulose, and lignin which
can be converted to solid, liquid, and gaseous products by thermochemical methods. One of the
products is charcoal. One of the tool that can carbonize the candlenut shell is candlenut shell
carbonization tool using a vertical multi chamber. The tool can carbonize candlenut shell without
having any additional energy. Some variables from the tool has been identify from the previous
research, such as its maximum capacity and process time, while its charcoal yield remains
unknown. Therefore, this research is aimed to determine the charcoal yield that can be produced
by candlenut shell carbonization tool using a vertical multi chamber. Three carbonization
experiments were performed with 8 kg candlenut shell filled in every carbonization chamber (CC).
The carbonization process temperature was measured for each chamber by using a
thermocouple in order to know the effect of temperature toward charcoal yield. As the result, the
average candlenut charcoal yield that can be produced by candlenut shell carbonization tool using
a vertical multi chamber is 24.99 %. Every chamber was experiencing deferent capability in
producing charcoal. CC3 is the highest charcoal yield chamber with 31.38 % and then followed
by CC2 with 25.04 % and CC1 with 18.79 %. Based on temperature that experiencing by every
chamber, it indicates that the temperature has a significant impact on charcoal yield. When the
temperature high, the charcoal yield is low and also goes the same in contrary. Therefore,
candlenut shell carbonization tool using a vertical multi chamber has capability in producing
candlenut shell charcoal at 24.99 % yield.

ABSTRACT
In this paper, we proposed a dynamic framework for a multi-layer colour QR code decoder. The
proposed decoder shows the general steps to decode colour QR code. The proposed decoder
framework contains a configuration setting standard that allows other researchers to refer in order
to decode their colour QR code based on the colours used in the encoder. The proposed
framework supports both types of colour QR code with colour reference or without colour
reference. The framework starts with colour QR code detection, then search for colour reference
if it exists. This is followed by fuzzy sets selection based on colour QR code type (with/ without
colour reference). Colour enhancement for the QR code is implemented based on the fuzzy set
decision. Next, is colour de-multiplexing to get black and white (B/W) QR code. The de-
multiplexing process is based on a configuration file, if the decoder is set for special QR code
colour setting. Finally, decoding and merge the results for B/W QR code to obtain the original file.
We use two datasets to evaluate our framework. The first dataset is provided by (Yang et al.,
2018). We obtained 83% success rate for detection and colour de-multiplexing. The second
dataset is based on generated colour QR code with colour reference. Our result produced 90%
decoding success rate. The experiment shows the framework can successfully work with different
types of colour QR code.

ABSTRACT
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner is one of the major cancer imaging tools for both
diagnosis and staging. The significant parameter for PET scanner is Standard Uptake Values
(SUV). SUV is a dimensionless ratio used historically by nuclear medicine professionals to
distinguish between “normal” and “abnormal” levels of uptake. The SUV can be used as a tool to
supplement the visual interpretation for physician. However, the SUV cannot be calculated without
the vendor’s application software. So for this study, SUV calculation scheme for Positron Emission
Tomography- Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (PET-DICOM) files using matrix
laboratory (MATLAB) is created to calculate the SUV and the results are compared with the SUV
taken from the well-known application software from GE Healthcare (Xeleris Application). The
performance of the scheme is then evaluated by using the PET- DICOM files of randomly choose
patient.

ABSTRACT

High-rise building is a solution to overcome land occupation problem in the high populated
countries such as Japan and Taiwan due high population. Therefore, the high-rise building is
required to minimize land usage, by building the structure upwards, instead of building the
structure out wide. However, in places where earthquakes are prone to happen such as in Japan
and Taiwan, the high-rise buildings can be risky to construct and maintain, because the vibrations
caused by the earthquake can cause severe structural integrity of the building and cause the
collapse. In addition to that, high rise building may also be affected by wind blowing, causing
discomfort to the occupants. To solve this problem, engineers added a mechanical device called
a tuned mass damper to reduce the amplitude of mechanical vibrations acting upon the building.
In this paper, a case study will be conducted on a model of a multi-storey building and how tuned
mass damper will effect on the natural frequency of the structure in comparison to the structure
that does not utilise the device of the tuned mass damper. Approaches to this case study is
included with numerical method via finite element analysis, as well as experimental method using
experimental modal analysis (EMA). It can be seen, that from experimental result, the structure
with tuned mass damper have 59% lower natural frequency compared to the one without tuned
mass damper. Therefore, buildings with tuned mass damper will have lesser vibration response
when it is excited.
