Thank you for grabbing a copy of the King of Quotes Game book edition. This has been a unique labor of love and learning that has been a lifetime in the making for both of us, along with a year of focused development, play testing, and research. At the outset we wanted to make a game that brought history to life. So we found quotes from some of the most influential people in history and turned it into a guessing game.

It has been a fun project to make and now we want to share it in as many ways as possible. As of this writing the game is a free downloadable PDF on our website. You can download a set of cards and print them at home to play. This book is a simple compilation of those same cards so everyone can have access to all the fun things we discovered. Our goal has been simple, make history accessible in today's fast paced world.

Ideally we wish we could have put every influential historical figure, famous and infamous, into the game but we limited ourselves to find 30 influential people that have helped shape the modern world we live in and select their best 12 quotes. Thus the game King of Quotes was created. Like us, you will be shocked to discover "Who said what?" . In our research we discovered just how much these 30 people have shaped our world with their words and ideas. Some have moved millions, while others have shared the right words with key people, who in turn changed the lives of entire generations. It will quickly surprise you how contradictory, poignant, and relevant their words are still today. This is not your grammar school history lesson.

So the question we asked ourselves early on was, how do we make a game out of just quotes? There have been many trivia games in the past and I am sure there will be many more.

We knew we wanted to take an interactive team approach with the game, so we decided to separate the quotes into two categories, Freedom and Power, two ideas that have been in a constant tug of war throughout the entire 20th century, and some would say throughout all of history. We selected 30 historical figures and organized them into these two groups, one group of quotes are blue tinted Freedom cards and the other set of quotes are red tinted Power cards. Neither group is good or bad, as you’ll soon discover, as some historical heroes said and did some shocking things.

By no means are we historical scholars and there will be quotes from people that could be for either Freedom or Power. We encourage you to do your own research and to foster that debate among you and your friends. When we put out the second edition of the game we will take those conflicting opinions and thoughts under serious advisement.

For 30-60 minutes, two teams, Frreeom and Power, go through a stack of quotes to see which team racks up the most points by guessing, "Who said that?". There are challenges and counter challenges, along with clues to help you match the right quote with the right historical figure. The first team to collect 10 points wins. This book is a collection of all the the quotes from all the historical figures in the game.

Long after the game is finished, you and your friends can use this book to read through the quotes and learn about these historical figures. These 30 influential people still have relevance in your life today. We hope you enjoy the book and even more so the game.

I am extraordinarily patient,

Power is like being a lady: if
you have to tell people you

There is no such thing as

You don’t tell deliberate lies,
but sometimes you have to

George Washington

George Washington was one of the Founding
Fathers of the USA, and served as the nationʼs
1st President for 2 terms (1789-97). He was the
only President to not be affiliated with a political
party. As the revolutionary army General, he

faced near defeat several times, yet through
bold moves, he beat Britain and their allies.
Known as “The Father of His Country”, and also
a Freemason, after winning the revolution, in
1787 he presided over the constitution that

formed a new government.

He dined & brokered treaties with indigenous
nations. Yet, if they refused his offers, he waged
wars to enforce his terms to further expand the

USA territory.

Born to a prosperous family of planters & slave-

holders in colonial Virginia, at 11 he inherited 10
slaves; by his death, 317 worked his property.
His will stated that upon his wifeʼs death, the
remaining 123 slaves that he owned would be
set free, however she indeed did this in 1801,
dying in 1802. Of the 12 USAʼs Presidents who
owned slaves, Washington was the only
President to free them - albeit after his death.

A lottery is the perfect tax:

them planting more.

A passionate attachment
of one nation for another,

Woodrow Wilson

Woodrow Wilson served as the 28th President of
the USA (1913-21). Member of the Democratic

Party, Wilson beat President Taft, who campaigned
to veto a central bank & to uphold the Constitutionʼs

“[Only] the Congress shall have power to... coin
money, regulate the value thereof...”.

In 1913, Wilson legalized income tax & presided
over the passage of the Federal Reserve Act (first
drafted in 1910 at the Jekyll Island Club meeting,

organised by JP Morgan, and next door to
Rockefeller Cottage). This act created the USA
Central Banking System, that would print & loan
money to the government, taking away control &
supply, putting it under the control of the Federal

Reserve -a privately run organization.

Wilson kept the USA out of WW1 until 1917, when
Germany attacked USA ships & tried unsuccessfully
to bring Mexico into War against the USA. Wilsonʼs
war effort helped bring about victory in 1918 for the

Allies against Germany. Wilson then crafted the
Versailles Treatyʼs “14 Points” which created the
League of Nations to ensure world peace. This won
him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919 for being the

leading architect of the League of Nations.
Ironically, Wilson never gained congressional
support for the League, and the USA never joined.

We are not put into this world
to sit still and know, we are
put into it to act.

I not only use all the brains
that I have, but all that I can

If you want to make enemies,
try to change something.

The history of liberty is a

Freemasonry

Freemasonry has become a well-known “secret society”
with over 6 million members worldwide. Despite being in

its fifth-century, the group still remains shrouded in
mystery. Believed to have its roots in medieval trade

guilds, itʼs possible that itʼs much older.

Often called Masons, members meet in “lodges”
(temples) that have an altar with a holy book. Central to
the Masonic organization are its initiation rituals, where

candidates swear oaths that bind them to the group.
Some say that Freemasonry has 3 levels, while others
say there are 33. It is also possible to progress higher
through its related organizations, such as Scottish Rite.

The first record of a Mason temple was in York in 926,
and the earliest recorded initiated was in 1646.

Spreading all over Europe, organized Masonry began
with the Grand Lodge of England in 1717. In 1776, a

Bavarian professor, named Adam Weishaupt,
brought new ideas into the organization,

an “Illuminated Masonry” that had the goal
of bringing together world leaders.

Many world leaders, including one-third of those who
signed the American independence, and also one-third

of all USA presidents, have been Freemasons,
the majority since FDR.

Communist Party

Moses Hess founded Labor Zionism & the socialist
(Freemason funded) newspaper Rheinische Zeitung.

Hess made Karl Marx editor, and in 1844 Hess
introduced Marx to Friedrich Engels, and taught both of
them his socialism. Engels became Marxʼs benefactor,
and they published “The Communist Manifesto” in 1848,
just prior to the European Revolutions, after which Marx
was considered a political threat, fled to the UK in 1849.

The goal of communism was to create a stateless,
classless society, with economic equality created by
removing private property rights, “because all inequality
and suffering resulted from capitalism”. Marxism is the
framework by which such a state is developed, and
socialism, according to Marx, was the first stage for a

society headed towards communism.

From the harsh inequalities of the 19th century under
Tsarist ruling, the Russian revolution began at the end of
WW1. Led by Lenin, the Tsar was overthrown and the
worldʼs first communist society began. Russia expanded,

and the Soviet Union was formed in 1922 as a
communist state.

During the past 100 years of totalitarian communist
governments, about 100 million people have been
mass-murdered through the systematic practice of Social

Engineering under communist rule.

Communism collapsed in Russia & East Europe in
1989-91, but the countries that continue are China,

North Korea, Cuba, Laos & Vietnam.

Fabian Society

The Fabian Society, founded in London in the year of
Karl Marxʼs death, set its goal as the creation of a
socialist state. The name is derived from the Roman
general Fabius Cunctator, whose patient, unnoticed
tactics avoided battles & secured his ultimate victory

(hence their “wolf in sheepʼs clothing” coat of arms).
Fabianʼs call this policy “gradualism”.

Freemason member Sidney & his wife Beatrice Webb,
founded of the Fabian Society & then the London School

of Economics in 1895. They were also strong
proponents of eugenics.

The Fabianʼs founded UKʼs Labour Party in 1900, and
the Socialist International Organization in 1951, using

ʻgradualismʼ to help spread socialism worldwide,
favouring imperialist foreign policy. Over 70 Fabian
societies were setup worldwide, including Canada, NZ

& Australia, where many Australian Labour Prime
Ministers & politicians are active Fabian members.
Indiaʼs first Prime Minister Nehru was also involved.

Playing a central role in the development of public
policy, all UK Labour Prime Ministers have been

members. Other prominent members have included
George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, Virginia Woolf,

Aldous Huxley and George Orwell.

Labour Party

The UK Labour Party originated in the late 19th
century, being officially founded in 1900, and then

moving on to inspire dozens of countries to form
their own Labour Parties -Australia 1901, Ireland

1912, NZ 1916.

The Labour Party arrived as political force that won
itʼs first UK election in 1924.

Labours formative members came from trade
unionists entering politics, the intellectual guiding
principles of the Fabian Society, and the Marxist

Social Democratic Federation.

“[Labour has] remained faithful to its long-term
belief in the establishment of east-west co-operation

as the basis for a strengthened United Nations
developing towards world government … For us,
world government is the final objective and the
United Nations the chosen instrument by which the
world can move away from the anarchy of power
politics, towards the creation of a genuine world

community, and the rule of law.”

(Labour Party manifesto, 1964).

Conservative Party (UK)

The Conservative Party was founded in 1834 from
the Tory Party -giving rise to the colloquial name of

Tories. Some historians trace its origins to King
Charles, the first in the 1620ʼs.

In the 1890ʼs, it formed a coalition government with
the Liberal Unionist Party, a break-away faction of
the Liberal Party, and in 1912 the two merged to

form the Conservative & Unionist Party.

During both World Wars, the Conservative Party
maintained power in parliament with its coalitions.

In the 1920ʼs, the Liberal vote greatly diminished,
and the Labour Party became the Conservativesʼ

main rival in the UK.

The Conservative Partyʼs domination of UK politics
for 57 years in the 20th century, has led to them
being referred to as one of the most successful

political parties in the western world.

Nobel Prize

The 5 Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901, as a set
of annual international awards bestowed by

Scandinavian institutions arising from the will of the
Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel, who established the five

Nobel prizes in 1895 -one year before his death.
Regarded as the most prestigious awards available for

Chemistry, Literature, Peace Activism, Physics, and
Physiology (Medicine).

Often the awards have had an Eurocentric male bias,
with the gold medal & US$ 1M prize, sometimes being

awarded decades after the achievement.

Alfred Nobel made a fortune from 355 patents, but his
invention of nitroglycerin -which he further developed in

1867 into what he patented as “dynamite”-
revolutionized the mining & construction industries,

allowing railroad companies to safely blast
through mountains.

A widely printed obituary error using his name scorned
him a man “who became rich by finding ways to kill

more people faster than ever before.” Stunned by what
he read in 1896 -one year before he died- he signed his

will to set aside the majority of his vast estate for five
Nobel Prizes, including one awarded for the
pursuit of peace.

Democrat Party

As the worldʼs oldest political party, the Democratsʼ
roots go back to Jeffersonʼs Democratic-Republican

Party, but it was Andrew Jacksonʼs slave-owning
supporters who formed the party, electing him as

President in 1829.

The 1850ʼs debate over whether slavery should be
extended into new western territories split the

Democrats, helping Abraham Lincolnʼs Republican Party
win in 1860.

After the Civil War, the Democratic Parties social
conservatism views, re-enforced segregation in the

south, suppressing black voting rights
for yet another century.

In 1912, Roosevelt ran as a 3rd-party candidate,
beginning a switch of political platforms between the
Democratic & Republican parties. Woodrow Wilson was
elected as the first progressive Democrat, setting up the
Federal Reserve Bank. FDRʼs Democratic Party of the
1930ʼs, promoted a new liberal platform, supporting

social justice.

Today the focus is modern liberalism, social & economic
equality, government intervention, the welfare state,
support for labor unions, affordable college tuitions,
universal health care, equal opportunity, consumer
protection and environmental protection.

Republican Party

The Republican Party (Grand Old Party) was founded in
1854 by anti-slavery activists & economic modernizers.

The first Republican President was
Abraham Lincoln, in 1861.

Originally, the GOP subscribed to classical liberalism,

anti-slavery & pro-economic reform. However, it lost its
liberal support base after Theodore Roosevelt split from
the party in 1912. The liberal Republican element was
completely overwhelmed by a conservative, started by

Barry Goldwater in 1964, and fulfilled
during the Reagan Era.

Now, the Republican Partyʼs ideology is American
conservatism, contrasting with the Democratsʼ liberal &
progressive platform. The GOP supports lower taxes,

free market capitalism, strong defence, gun rights,
deregulation and restrictions on labor unions, and seeks

to uphold traditional values based largely on
Judeo-Christian ethics.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed by Johnson -a
Democratic President- but had more votes from
Republicans.

Interestingly, they have won 24 of the last 40
presidential elections, with 19 Republican Presidents -the
most from one party. Yet, the Republican party has only

55 million registered voters, compared to the
Democratsʼ 72 million.

Axis Forces

The Axis powers (Germany, Italy and Japan) fought in
WW2 against the Allies. Their first step was a treaty
signed between Germany & Italy in 1936. Mussolini

then declared that all other European countries would,
from then on, rotate on the Rome–Berlin axis, thus

creating the term “Axis”. At the same time in November
1936, Germany & Japan signed an anti-communist
treaty, which Italy joined in 1937. By 1940, the
German-Italian-Japanese military allianceʼs
Tripartite Pact was signed.

Because Finland never signed the Tripartite Pact, it was
never an official member of the Axis powers, but Nazi
Germany aided Finlandʼs military assault on the Soviet
Union in 1941, and in its defence against Soviet attacks
in 1944. Bulgaria and Yugoslavia finally joined the Axis

when Germany offered them the
Greek territory in Thrace.

The Pearl Harbor attack led to Germanyʼs declaration of
war on the USA, and the Atlantic & Pacific wars
became part of WW2 from 1941.

At its height in WW2, the Axis presided over territories
that occupied large parts of Europe, North Africa, and

East Asia. The Axis powers were defeated in 1945.

Allied Forces

At the start of WW2 on September 1st, 1939, the Allies
consisted of France (except during the Nazi German
occupation, 1940-44), Poland, and the UK (as well as

their colonial states, such as British India). Within days,
they were joined by the independent Dominions of the

British Commonwealth: Australia, Canada,
NZ & South Africa.

The USSR first cooperated with Nazi Germany by
invading Poland, but joined the Allies in June 1941 after
being betrayed & invaded by Nazi Germany. The USA

officially joined in December 1941 after the attack on
Pearl Harbor. China had already been in a prolonged

war with Japan since 1937, but officially joined the
Allies to fight the Axis in 1941.

The Allies of WW2 were called the United Nations, from
January 1st, 1942, but the UN name was rarely used to

describe the Allies during the war. The “Big Three”
leaders (USSR, UK, USA) controlled Allied strategy, but

then were recognized as the Allied “Big Four” -with
China- or the “Four Policemen” of the UN.

With the USSR taking Berlin after victory over the Nazis,
it expanded Soviet territory across half of Europe.

After the war, the Allied nations became the basis of the
modern United Nationsʼ security council permanent five

members: China, France, Russia, UK, and the USA.

Deaths: Russia 24m, China 20m, Germany 8m, India 3m
Japan 3m, France 570k, UK 450k, USA 420k. All 60m.

The League of Nations

Several people begun calling for the “League of
Nations” from the outset of WW1 in 1914. After the
War, the League was formed in 1920, head-quartered in
Switzerland. France, the UK, Italy and Japan were

permanent members of its Executive Council;
in total, 42 countries joined.

US President Woodrow Wilson negotiated the Treaty of
Versailles, and was the driving force behind setting up

the League of Nations. But with so many Americans
against the War, there was concern around further

entanglement in Europe after 1919, and so
the USA never joined the League.

Germany was becoming Europeʼs superpower before
WW1. Blamed for the WW1 with the signing the Treaty
of Versailles in 1919, Geramany was forced to pay war
debts (final payment was til 2010). A bankrupt Germany

was allowed to join the League in 1926. Once Hitler
came to power, he withdrew from the League in 1933,

broke the treaties, and deliberately challenged the
League; no one tried to stop him.

With the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, Japan pulled
out of the League in 1933. It was clear the League had
no power to stop WW2, and was dissolved in 1946, in

favour of the UN.

United Nations

The UN officially started in October 1945. At its
founding, it had 51 member states. Currently there are
193. Two countries not officially listed -Observer States-
are the Vatican City & Palestine; six additional countries
are recognized by at least one other member. There are
5 permanent members to the its security council: China,
France, Russia, UK, and USA. The UN Chartersʼ main
purposes are maintaining worldwide peace and security.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) & the World
Bank -created at the Bretton Woods Monetary

Conference in the USA in July 1944- have formal
agreements with the UN. By the end of 1946 the IMF
had grown to 39 members (now 188). The first country
to borrow from the World Bank was France, in May
1947. The IMF works to provide financial stability, and

the World Bank provides loans to countries.

The USA Federal Reserve is a major contributor to the
IMF. The biggest shareholder in the IMF is the USA

Treasury; the biggest shareholder of the Treasury is the
USA Federal Reserve. The Fedʼs private shareholders
include Citibank, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase & the

Bank of International Settlements, Switzerland.

The UN held Earth Summit held in 1992, began AG21,
Angenda 21 (21st century) expanding into 2030 SDG

(Sustainable Development Goals) to globally
“concentrate on activities aimed at facilitating the
transition from rural to urban lifestyles” executed at
local, national, and global levels of government.

Bilderberg Group

The Bilderberg Group is an informal transatlantic
council, developed in 1952-54, where Presidents, Prime
Ministers, international bankers and Generals meet with
royalty once a year in a closed-door meeting. Without

any minutes, they have the freedom to say what they
cannot publicly speak of. Their secrecy was remarkable

for their first 20 years, with no one even
knowing they existed.

Taking their name from the Hotel de Bilderberg in the
Netherlands, the first group was invited by Prince

Bernhard of the Netherlands. Later, he said: “European
integration is our goal”, and according to the Princeʼs

biography, the Bilderberg Group gave birth to the
European Union (EU), with the ultimate goal of a
one-world government, meeting yearly to discuss
worldwide policies at different prestigious hotels

all over the world.

Everyone from Peter Thiel, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Hilary
& Bill Clinton, to George Soros is a member; the original

1954 governing council included Kissinger. Bill Clinton
spoke at a Bilderberg conference a year before his
election victory, as did British Prime Ministers
Tony Blair & Margaret Thatcher.

European Union

The European Union (EU) formally began with the
European Economic Community (EEC) in 1957. The EEC

worked for many decades, adding more members
states, expanding the policies & finally adopting the
Euro as a new central currency in 1999, as legal tender

in 2002. Greece joined the EU in 2001.

Todayʼs EU began in 1993 as a political & economic
union of 28 member states, of 513 million people (7.3%
of the worldʼs population). While no member state has

left the EU yet, with Brexit the UK is
negotiating a withdrawal.

The EU has developed an internal single market through
a standardized system of laws that apply in certain

matters. EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of
people, goods, services and capital within
the internal market.

The EU is currently a confederation (unlike a federation
superstate, like the USA, wherein ultimate power lies in
a federal hierarchy). A confederation keeps power with
the individual states. The past 2 French Presidents have
proposed new reforms for the EU with pooled financial

resources, an EU Finance Minister, and Europe-wide
financial policy, which would be
more akin to a federation.

Civil Rights Movement

After the American Civil War and the abolition of
slavery in the 1860ʼs, the Reconstruction Amendments to

the USA Constitution granted emancipation &
constitutional rights of citizenship to all

African-Americans, most of whom had recently been
enslaved. For a brief period, African-Americans voted

and held political office, but they were increasingly
subjected to discrimination and sustained violence, often

under Jim Crow laws.

The 1955ʼs lynching and violent torture to death of
Emmett Till, aged 14, was the spark that generated
nationwide activism & resistance, which became the Civil
Rights movement. Outrage erupted when his mother
decided to have an open-casket funeral so that everyone
could see Emmettʼs mutilated body, mobilizing the
African-American community nationwide from 1955.

Achieving its largest legislative gains by the mid-1960ʼs,
the charismatic leadership and non-violent philosophy of

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. had a huge impact on the
movement, along with that of Rosa Parks & Malcolm X,

amongst many others. The movement is said to have
ended with Kingʼs assassination in 1968.
