BOARD FEET CONVERSIONS

The basic unit of measure for lumber cut from a log is the board foot. A board foot contains 144 cubic inches of volume.
It is generally easiest to compare any piece of lumber to a board foot of lumber measuring one (1) inch thick, twelve (12) inches wide and
one (1) foot long.
Lumber under one (1) inch thick is generally considered the same as one (1) inch thick for estimating purposes. To calculate the BOARD
FEET in a given piece or amount of lumber, use the formula:

To convert linear feet to board feet: To convert board feet to linear feet:
T" x W" x L' = Bd. ft. 12 x Bd. ft = Linear

Estimating Siding & Accessories

LUMBEERS&TMIMILLWAOTRIKNG SIDING & ACCESSORIES

Estimating Sidewalls

1. Determine the total square footage of each side of the home and add together.
2. Determine square footage of all doors and windows; add together and subtract

from total 1 above.
3. Add 10% to account for waste.

Estimating Gable End

Height x 1/2 Width = Total Sq. Ft.
Example: Height (4') x 1/2 Width (28') = 56 Sq. Ft.

Estimating A Dormer

1/2 Height x Width = Sq. Ft. Of One Side
2 x Sq. Ft. Of One Side = Sq. Ft. Of Dormer
Example: 1/2 Height (4') x Width (6') = 12 Sq. Ft.
Example: 2 x 12 Sq. Ft.
