5.10 Children Collection

Collections are selected from the array of materials available from various
publishers and tailored according to the needs and interests of children. In the past,
librarians would call themselves as “gatekeepers of good literature”, restricting
materials in the collection to only “worthy” reading and quality materials. This lead to
low volume of materials published specifically for children.

Children’s librarians save the time of the reader by helping young people find
appropriate information through reference and homework assistance and through
reader’s advisory and book talks. Creating booklists and special displays helps
children and parents quickly find materials for annual activities like the science fair or
holiday reading. Normally, children’s libraries contain more of audio-visual and
graphic materials that may include photographs, pictures, diagrams, realia (real
objects), etc. The other materials that are available in children’s libraries are books,
magazines, etc. (Luban, 1998).

 Non-fiction and reference materials

Information books on a wide variety of topics are shelved here by the same
call numbers used in the adult library. Readers will find great material for
school projects and intriguing titles on personal interests - knights, kites,
sharks, space, costumes, cooking, and more.

Non-fiction and reference materials are the form of any narrative, account,
or other communicative work whose assertions and descriptions are
understood to be factual. Many children read non-fiction for fun. Whether on
cars, dinosaurs or baseball players, non-fiction books with photos and other
visuals appeal to many children.

With the advent of the Internet, many libraries have reduced the number of
reference books they carry. Having the World Book Encyclopaedia on hand is
essential if all the computer terminals are in use, children can still find
something on the topic an atlas, almanac, dictionary and thesaurus are still
helpful to have in hard copies.

them occupied and quiet/focused.
