INTERIOR DESIGN

8.0 Interior Design

Interior design can defined as primarily focused to bring out the right potential out the
space, to judge and decide which space can serve for which purpose best and what is right and
efficient way of building the space room or purposeful space. Every space has its own
uniqueness. It has its own features and it’s has own requirements too. Every space has a life of
its own and can tell a story its own. Thus, there are various principles of interior library
design:

Balance in space is all about visual balance. In interior design, this mean
distributing the elements evenly throughout the space to create visual balance
To give emphasis to something means to give it particular importance, value or
prominence. In interior design, it about giving importance to a particular area
or object. It about creating a focal point within the space
Applying contrast in interiors adds drama and interest. Placing contrasting
(strikingly different) elements next to each other somewhat creates emphasis
on both objects and areas. However, the use of contrast shouldn’t be overdone
in a space or else it would lose its magical touch of drama.
To create rhythm in a space means to repeat certain elements throughout. In
music, rhythm is a repetitive beat that creates a musical pattern. But in interior
design, rhythm can be achieved by the repetitive use of elements.
While the meaning of scale and proportion are often times confused. They both
have to do with the size of an object. In interior design, they’re intertwined.
They both have to do with the size of elements in relation to other elements or
in relation to the space as a whole.
Harmony and unity is achieved when all the elements in a space work together
and complement each other. It means looking at the space as a whole and
seeing how each element plays a part in meeting the function of the space. It
also means seeing the harmonious transition between one element and another.

Interior Design for Kiddo Children’s Library concepts is Disneyland and Malaysia
Heritage and Culture, which is on the ground floor (main entry) the image of Malaysia
Heritage and Culture, will display in digital screen as a building wall paper. This image will
appear within 1 hour and will change to the next image. Each image was created with a story

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION CENTERS (IML656) Page 128

about the image/picture that appears. Although the concept seem like classic, the image and
color used are more modern and in interactive mode. Meanwhile, 1st until 4th floor, Disney
Cartoon (Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Cinderella, Stitch, etc.) will be the building
wallpaper. Every floor has different wallpaper to interact the children that come to our library.

The design allows children and the users of all ages find the library as an open,
inviting attractive, challenging and non-threatening pace to visit. Ideally, a library needs its
special design for library area and space which must be easily recognize (e.g. special
furnishings, decorations and colors) consideration of the interior aspects of design that offer
comfort and encourage learning such as access to daylight, the use of natural materials,
comfortable seating and places that provide shelter and are compose of environmentally
healthy finishes.

8.1 Colors
Kiddo Children’s Library using bright, colorful, warm and inviting and allow

children to explore the area fully. The building was created a memorable color palette
and bold environment graphics to reinforce a sense of discovery.

Color can help give boundaries to a space and signal how to behave. It can add
warmth or liveliness or gravity. And, especially when applied through paint, it is easy
and inexpensive to change. So we can alter the library interior over time. Color is the
starting point for establishing the desired atmosphere. When chosen wall colors and
flooring in an appropriate color scheme create an attractive and inviting space. But,
pairing the right fabrics and finishes really pulls everything together.

Kiddo Children’s Library are striving to design a friendly and welcoming
library environment by using variant colors to create exciting and stimulating
environment to support teaching, learning and research for our library community.
Kiddo Children’s Library choose product from Dulux Paint. It is one of the established
and expert in paint product.

8.2 Flooring
Just a carefully planning a color scheme creates an attractive harmony within a

space; the same is also true when it comes to flooring of the library or planning fabric
patterns. Kiddo Children’s Library space is fully carpeting in term of the security
(slippery) and the sound or voice absorbing. For floor coverings, both attractive and
durable type is selected in this library. High quality, commercial grade, anti-static
nylon carpet with a low, narrow loop or carpet tile, for low maintenance with a life
expectancy of a minimum of fifteen years id required for most public and staff spaces.

Kiddo Children’s Library also uses Crypto fabrics feature fibers that resist
moisture and stains and also have an integrated moisture barrier. The result is easily
cleanable furniture with a surface that repels moisture and stains.

8.3 Signage
Kiddo Children’s Library provide a consistent, easily understood and effective

signage and way finding system throughout the facility that includes the use of both
architectural elements and graphic features.

The system is employer clear, logical hierarchies that allow patrons to find
their way remember and communicate directions to others. Major directional and
identifications signs, such as signs used to identify service desks, need to be highly
visible from the direction of most frequent approach, at least 8’ clear from the bottom
edge of the sign to the floor and vandal resistant. Major signs therefore are large
enough to be read from the entrance of the library public space.

Signage also designing in integrated into the interior design of the building and
coordinated with the space planning, reflected ceiling and lighting and other pertinent
elements of facility. Signage in the children’s have to be in type fonts legible by young
children (i.e. preschoolers cannot read script). Signs must be easy to move and change
as the Library’s interior space shift over time. Where appropriate, signage should be
specified so that Library staff can modify and reinstall signs to reflect changes in
layout of the collections and services.

Kiddo Children’s Library had divided into three parts of signage that are
awareness signage, rules and regulation signage and information signage.

a. Way finding

Way finding refers to information systems that guide people through physical
environment and enhance their understanding and experience of the space. Way
finding is particularly important in complex built environments. As architectural
environments become more complicated, people need visual cues such as maps
directions and symbols to help guide them to their destination. In these often high-
stress environments, effective way finding systems contribute to a sense of well-
being, safety and security.

8.4 Lighting
The quality of lighting within the Kiddo Children’s Library is a prime design

consideration. The lighting in the building must be uniform throughout the space,
without glare or excessive contrast. Indirect lighting in all spaces is preferred. Energy
conservation requirements must be achieved while lighting levels and light quality is
retained. Lighting is very important considerations in library because it can cause
damage of documents, drawings and photographs. In certain area in the library, it’s
important to minimize the light damage by choosing lighting of the right wavelength
and intensity and by ensuring that the duration of lighting is not too long. Because in
the libraries, reading is the most important undertaking.

Lighting levels
Lighting levels should meet recommendations based expressed as maintained
levels and calculations on it should include appropriate light loss factors.

Reading areas: 30 – 40 foot candles average, measured horizontally at desktop,
augmented by task lighting where appropriate to increase levels to 50 foots-
candles.

Book Stacks: An excellent lighting level in stack areas is a high priority for the
new library. 6 foot-candles at a height of 12” and 35 foot candles maximum,
measured vertically at any height to achieve an approximate 6 to 1 maximum
to minimum ratio across the book stack face.

Service desks: 40 – 50 foot-candles average, measured horizontally at counter
top, carefully coordinated with computer terminal screens and orientations to
avoid glare.

Study rooms: 30 – 40 foot-candles average, measured horizontally at desktop.

Staff Work Area: 50 foot-candles average, on desk and work tables, measured
horizontally at desktop.

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION CENTERS (IML656) Page 140

a) Lighting fixtures
Lighting fixtures should effectively control glare, through shielded

parabolic louvers in down light, up lighting and other techniques. Lighting in
intensive computer use areas should covers situation in which people use
computers for 4 of more hours per day.

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION CENTERS (IML656) Page 141

b) Light sources
Light sources should be fluorescent for general use. Long fluorescent lamp

should be in warm, medium or cool color with a color-rendering index of 82.
Compact fluorescent lamps should have warm, medium or cool color similar long
to fluorescent lamps. Used of solar energy whenever possible. Consideration on
minimize the number of different lamp types used, to simplify maintenance and
economize on lamp stocking. Use standard lamp types. Avoid placing light
fixtures in inaccessible locations or locations that require special scaffolding for
access.

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION CENTERS (IML656) Page 142

c) Day lighting and fenestration
Make use of day lighting design principles to reduce energy costs and

to enhance building sustainability. Also, focused that direct sunlight does not
come into contact with library materials, display areas or seating areas.
Consider ultraviolet filter treatments on windows into area that house library
materials. Effective use of day lighting can reduce energy consumption and
make the library more human and less institutions.

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION CENTERS (IML656) Page 143

d) Emergency and exit lighting
Emergency lighting is especially important to those libraries.

Emergency lighting powered by rechargeable batteries must be installed in
both public and staff areas. The exit and emergency warning system should
include lights for the deaf. Emergency lighting should last at least one hour and
direct staff and customer to the exits. There must be a means of testing the
emergency lighting without triggered security or fire alarms.

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION CENTERS (IML656) Page 144

e) Lighting controls
All light in the library including task lighting should be controlled by a

programmable timer system that is flexible, so all lights can be turned off at
once at closing or only selected lights are turned on. The system is be able to
be manually overridden. Consider a master control station at or near the
circulation desk. This light control switches and panels should be conveniently
accessible to staff, but not to the public. Circuit breakers and light switch
panels have permanent labels identifying the light circuit for each switch or
breaker. Light switch in public areas kept at a minimum. All of these light
controls are conveniently located and many will need to be controlled by
rheostat so that the lights are dimmable.

8.5 Security

a) Installation of CCTV
CCTV is important security tools in library, where it can protect a large

area of space and allow libraries and staff to immediately check the important
department in library such as at reference desk or office. This CCTV are
placed around the library that can help all users safe when reading, researching
and browsing. This CCTV placed only at public area and keeps this CCTV out
of restrooms and break rooms to protect the privacy of our employees and
patrons.

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION CENTERS (IML656) Page 145

b) Fire detection and alarm systems
A key aspect of fire protection is to identify a developing fire emergency in

a timely manner and to alert the building’s occupations and fire emergency
organizations. This is the role of fire detection and alarm systems.

c) Tattle Tape Security Strips
This Tattle Tape Security Strips is the best way to secure our library’s

collection. Our security strips are impossible to find or remove which makes
the items impossible to leave the library without being checked out properly at
the counter.

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION CENTERS (IML656) Page 146

d) Installation of RFID
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is the latest technology to be used

in library theft detection systems. The RFID would alert the receptionist or
security guard if an employee tried to leave with a tagged item.

8.6 Furniture
Kiddo Children’s Library strive towards creating environment that not only

provide all the elements expected of 21st century but also position themselves as the
heart of the cultural life of a community. Kiddo Children’s Library bring creativity
and attention to detail to all our interior schemes, creating designer finishes by using
budget-friendly carpets and fabrics, adding lamps, cushions and rugs for a luxurious
feel. All the furniture and equipment in the ground floor are designed to allow easy
access for children to reach the materials. As a result the shelving is a bit lower as is
the furniture to better accommodate the children. The circulation desk whether located
in the ground floor or first floor decorated and builds to be easy for children to use.

a) Book Trolleys
When it comes to keeping a well-organized, efficient library, book trolleys are

first line of defense. There are a large range of book trolley to choose from, from
basic trolleys to those that offer increased comfort and range of use.

b) Seating
Space for people to use the library building is as important as space in which to

house and display the collection. Seating capacity is needed to serve all age
groups, including study tables, lounge chairs, parent/caregivers seating and etc. In
addition, seating areas must be especially need a designed area with furnishings
and equipment that give them a sense of having their own space.

The design of the spaces should send a message to teens that they are welcome
at the library as well as create a physical between user age group and others.

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION CENTERS (IML656) Page 148

Teenager’s areas and the children’s area arranged as a series of contiguous spaces
that encourage children and youth to move from one to the next as they mature.
The children’s area also designed to offer distinct seating areas of toddlers and
their parents or caregivers, family groups with strollers and individual school age
children who need to do homework or quietly read. Student need table seating and
computers in a quiet area designed for homework and space is needed for tutoring
pairs to work together.

PLANNING AND DESIGN OF LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION CENTERS (IML656) Page 149

c) Shelf
Book should be arranges so that shelves are full but not so tight as the cause

damage when they are removed. Bookends should always be used for shelves that
are not full. Shelving should be wide enough so that books do not extend beyond
the edges. As a rule, books should not be stacked in piles on shelves.
