As compared to the old typical building typology
surrounding it, the streamlined building form
of the new KTM Sentul station symbolised the
modernisation and futuristic architecture evolu-
tion in the area.
The existence of the KTM station, LRT station,
and highways nearby provide alternative mode
of transportation for the people surrounding the
site, creating more accessibility and permea-
bility to it. Thus, transit oriented development
(T.O.D.) is possible for the site.

This area also consists of shophouses that form walk-
able districts and streets for the pedestrian. The street
facing façade and low scale building height engage
people closely to the area.
Therefore, it became a walkable district that is mixed
with complementary uses and local self-sustaining econ-
omy environment.

Jalan Sentul is one of the prominent vehicular path in the Sentul area, Bottom Left :Jalan 2/48a & LRT Track

Lorong Timur is another major vehicular path in the area separating
the Fennel and Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple, another religious building
in the area.
River therefore serves as another edge to the area that separates
the Fennel – a new ongoing development project and the old public
affordable housing on the other side.
Connections to KTM, LRT and future MRT services provide accessi-
bility and permeability for the people from other parts of Klang Valley
to Sentul.

The overall section B-B starts from the south of the proposed site along Jalan Terap, cutting across Jalan Enam and Jalan Haji Salleh. It continues to cut
through SJK CHI MAN Sentul, the Catholic Church of St. Joseph and it’s Tamil primary school which is located along Jalan Sentul. Along the same road, the
section cut then ends at Pasar Sentul and a number of shoplots.

This part of the section cut is through a residential area which is situated in an almost flat surface along Jalan Terap. This allows good drainage construction and maintenance around the residents’ houses. Drainages within this area are also big
enough and are open for easy of maintenance. However, it might be said that it is a bit too open for possibilities of accidents and for stray animals and insects to use or to be trapped in. These houses along Jalan Terap, Jalan Cempedak and Jalan
Sukun are also filled with well placed trees and vegetation. Alongside the resident’s own gardens, these streets provide nice views and shading for pedestrians to walk under.

The Saffron condominium is across from the pro-
posed site, along Jalan Enam and built on top of
Sungai Untut which retains the river’s flow. It is a
high rise residential building consisting of four blocks
with two blocks of 17 storeys and another two of 24
storeys.

Jalan Enam is a 3 laned highway in either direction
that enters Sentul and feeds to the traffic of Jalan
Sentul, Lorong Timur and Jalan 2/48a

The site located adjacent to Sentul KTM has an al-
most flat level surface with a few huge trees. Even
though the KTM has part of it’s East wing structure
built on the site, it provides a view beyond it and
an opportunity for possible pedestrian linkage to
KLPAC which is located on the West side of the
KTM.

Sentul is situated in between them along
with shoplots and a few residential houses.
Due to a bus stop that feeds the KTM,
Jalan Haji Salleh is allocated with amenities
such as drainage and pathway for pedestri-
ans. These amenities are further enhanced
by the vegetation and landscape along the
road.

As the section line cuts through S.R.J.K CHI MAN school, the Catholic
Church of St. Joseph’s and it’s Tamil primary school, about a 2 meter re-
cessed leveling from the main road of Jalan Sentul has been noticed.
This shows the planning for water flow from the main road drainages to
Sungai Untut.

Upon reaching Pasar Sentul, we notice that there are a few minor differences
in the road leveling. While we still have a pretty consistent leveling, walking
along this path requires more attention due to the slight differences in the
leveling of the pathways as well as the obstacles along it. Disabled people
may have trouble going along this route.

2.2.1.6: CONCLUSION

In conclusion, there is room of improvement for the overall connectivity of the
path. The connectivity between nodes along the path can be enhanced by fur-
ther reinforcing the nodes so that it is recognizable from one point to the other.
The path can also be enhanced by line of structure and vegetation too. The
Sentul area is a potential area for rich vegetation, and due to its unstoppable
development and modernization, architectural elements play an important role
in giving identity to these paths.

After analyzation on the path within the 500m radius, main roads like Jalan
Enam and Jalan Sentul are still considered as workable paths due to promi-
nent buildings like Caper and Tamarind which are located beside them. They
can be distinguish by identifying the junction node, notable building’s attribute
and the old shophouses.

However, secondary roads such as Lorong Perhentian,Jalan Cempedak and
the paths within the residential area are not really a workable path. The basic
solution would be erecting clear signages, but special feature can be intro-
duced to this path to make it recognizable too. A change in visual scale of the
environment can be introduced to break the consistency of these paths, so that
each path can be differentiated by the user.

2.2.2.1 Definition
Based on The Image of the City by Kevin Lynch, districts are the medi-
um-to-large sections of the city which the observer mentally enters “inside of”
and which are recognizable as having some common, identifying character.

2.2.2.2 Type of Districts
The YTL’s vision to transform Sentul and the ongoing development has grad-
ually changed the landscape of Sentul. Sentul Komuter Station as the en-
trance of Sentul becomes the first transformation in the area, separating the
east and west side of the Sentul forming different districts within 500m radius
around our site.
Based on our observation, five distinct districts are identified based on phys-
ical characteristics (building type, visual characteristics and age of buildings)
as well as non-physical characteristics (building use and activity patterns).
The five districts identified are:
1. Art & Cultural District
2. New Development District
3. Old Mixed-use District
4. Service Commercial District
5. Institutional & Religious Building District

2.2.2 DISTRICT

Behavior of Districts

In terms of the “behavior” of the districts, Old Mixed-use Districts are the most
extrovert, due to the absence of obstacles between the roads and shop hous-
es/shop lots facing the road. This approach caused the building front to be
highly active and accessible for street users which encourages them to use
the five-foot way provided. The availability of five-foot way also allows street
activities to occur, e.g it allow street users to window-shop and stop by for re-
freshments, or shop workers to move goods from lorries into the shops. These
street activities that randomly occur throughout the day not only enliven the city
but are also engaging the street users.

On the other hand, Commercial District displays a semi-extrovert behaviour
due to the presence of raised curb and landscaping surrounding the district.
The presence of wide secondary road (Jalan 14/48a) also reduces the visual
contact of main road users to the active building front activities especially at the
shop-offices facing Jalan Sentul.

Last but not least, the New Development District is generally recognized as an
introvert region due to the absence of building front activity especially in front of
Saffron and Tamarind condominiums along Jalan Enam. All the facilities within
the buildings are exclusive for the residents only, except for D6 and D7 which
demonstrates a semi-introvert quality.

Within these retail-office blocks, there are inner courtyards for the building us-
ers to enjoy. At the same time, the designer also provided an open landscape
area in front of both D6 and D7, trying to induce street activities. Nevertheless,
the open landscape area appears more as a buffer area that separates the
buildings from the noisy roads rather than acting as an edge that supports
building front activities/robustness. This issue is due to the absence of ground
level commercial shops at current moment.

In conclusion, the image of the city of Sentul especially within 500m radius
around the site is very disorganized with various district behaviors, causing
people who are unfamiliar with the surroundings to get lost easily within the
city.
