Once there was a baby bird that tried to fly,
but the baby bird couldn't fly because the ba-
by bird didn’t know how to fly. The baby bird
the baby bird was all alone. He had no one to
teach him. But the baby bird went to find
some one . Someone who can teach him
how to fly. But when he was looking around
he saw a swan with white feathers and that
swan knew how to fly. So the baby bird ask
the swan to teach him and the swan agree to
teach the baby swan to fly.

Hi. My name is Sreypov Vary. I was born in 1973,
Battambang, Cambodia. In 1979 my family fled
Cambodia to Thai & Khmer border. We stayed at
Kao-I-Dang refugee camp from 1979-1983. We
went to Manila, Philippines in 1983, stayed there 8
months before we came to Peterborough NH U.S.A.
in June of 84. I went to The Well School from first
to eighth grade, and then went to Conval High
School and graduated in 1993. After that I went to
Keene State College for two years majoring in An-
thropology and Early Childhood Education. I had to stop my education
to help my family raise my oldest niece. At the same time worked as
Administrative Assistance in various companies until 2000. There after I
have been teaching ever since. I moved to Lowell MA in 2012. My fa-
vorite quote is “Above all, Love each other deeply…” 1 Peter 4:8

My name is Ida Keovimean Borin. My Khmer Birth
name is Keovimean which is my current middle
name and it means glass castle or glass mansion.
I was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I came to
United States 13 years ago. Even though I have
been here for half my life, I still remember fully on
how to speak, read and listen Khmer. But when it
comes to writing, I forget 80% of it, but if I re-
learn them again, it will come back to me. Entre-
preneur of Cambodian After-School Program and
Culture. Because of the skill I have, I want to use it to its advantage
to help my Khmer community that have trouble with everyday commu-
nication with the outsiders for helps. I want to help both younger and
old generation. I want to younger understand and respect elders, also
elders understand not all but half of how the younger think and how
modern world works. We can show love by actions but most of time
words work on its magic too. My favorite quote is “What Goes Around,
Come Around”

Cambodia. Taught High School 1992-2000 in
Takeo Province and Anuwat High School 2000-
2012 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. 2014-2017 I
was trained English by Light of Cambodian Children supported by National

My name is Vanthan Chen. I was born 1954 at
Kampong Chak district Svay Rieng Province
Cambodia. I studied to reach 12 high school in
1974 at Tuol Svay Prey High School in Phnom
Penh. In 1992-1994 I studied accounting at
University. My father is Chen Hor (died in
1975). My mother is Meak Sa Moue (died
2004) I have 4 younger siblings, 3 daughters,
one lives in Lowell MA with me. In 1979-2012 I
worked in Ministry Public Work and Transporta-
tion. I was responsible to audit all department under the Ministry Public
Work between 2013-2017 I was trained English by Light of Cambodian

Khmer Teacher

Tararith Kho is a Cambodian poet, publisher,
and educator who has made a name for him-
self in his homeland and in American literary
circles. Entrepreneur of Cambodian After-
School Program and Culture, and PEN-
Cambodia. He has been a Scholars at Risk
Fellow at Harvard, and from 2010 and 2011
was a fellow at Brown University’s Interna-
tional Writing Project. His books and poetry
anthologies include Lesson of Life (1998), Culture Should Not
StayAlone (2006), Regretful (2009), Red Print (2010), and Khmer Nigeria
Poetry (2011). He now teaches Khmer language at Middlesex Community
College and University of Massachusetts Lowell.

My name is Victoria Phan I am currently 17 years old
and is currently attending Lowell High School. I am a
member of the Angkor Dance Troupe and I am also a
junior instructor there. I am inspired to pursue my
dream of working into the medical field to help others in
my community.

Sovann Khon was born in
1967, Battambang, Cam-
bodia. There were 9 peo-
ple in his family. 1976-
1979, during Pol Pot re-
gime, he stayed at Bat-
tambang Province. From
1976-1977, he played
hand drum and worked
on the farm during Khmer
rouge organization. From
1977-1979, he worked on
the farm. There were 3
younger brothers, 1 new
born sister and a father
died of hunger during Pol
Pot regime. After communist Vietnamese took over Cambodia in 1979,
he fled Cambodia to Thai and Khmer border. He stayed at Kao-I-Dang
refugee camp from 1979-1983. During his stay in Kao I Dang, he stud-
ied more Cambodian traditional music (Drum, Tro Sau, Guitar). He was
sponsored to the United States by Dr. Mary Ann McNeillus on April,
1984. He landed in Rochester MN, and lived there from 1984-1989. He
started playing Cambodian wedding music again since then. He attend-
ed John Marshall High School Rochester, MN in 1984. He graduated
from John Marshall High School, Rochester, MN in 1987. He worked as
CNA in Rochester MN from 1987-1989. He moved to Lowell, MA in
1989. 1989, He studied Mechanical Engineer at UMASS Lowell while he
was working for BASF company in Bedford, MA. He worked for Fujifilm
Microdisk from 1990-1999. From 1999-2000, he worked for Computer
City and Comp USA as sale associate and Computer Tech support.
From 2000-2007, he worked as executive director for Ekreach job
placement. He started Cambodian traditional wedding photo and video,
IVP STUDIO from 2008 to present. He started teaching Wong Pleng
Khmer, world music at UMASS Lowell from 2011 to present.
