Easter 2016

Let the 30th celebration begin!
88

As part of the 30th anniversary celebration, we had a lemonade social
after the services on July 3, one of the biggest weekends of the year on the island.
Visitors, both new and returning as well as regular attendees enjoyed the fellowship.

More celebrating on September 4th ~ Dinner on the Grounds

Beautiful weather, inspiring services, delicious food and wonderful fellowship! All of those happened on Sunday,
September 4, 2016. As part of this year’s celebration of the Village Chapel’s 30th anniversary, the Homecoming and

Dinner on the Grounds brought together founders, long time Chapel supporters and new attendees.
The two services were led by the Reverend Peter Bynum from the First Presbyterian Church in Concord, NC, with a noon
potluck dinner. Those attending included former Chapel Board presidents, Billie Jean Berne, Keith Bradley, Ann Cathcart,
Pat Miller (for Ken) and Carol Sauder as well as extraordinary volunteers, the Lammerts, Pat and Larry, Don Sauder and
the Westers, Lee and Thad.
Donors of significant projects, John Fisher (media equipment), Susan and Charlie Himes (piano) and Brenda Quanstrom
(carving by husband, Dana) were there to celebrate the special day. Chapel staff, Cindy Sellers (Music Director and Chapel
Organist) Pattie Caban (Chapel Administrator) and the Rev. Jim Brown (long time minister) were present to celebrate.
Board Chairman Dick Johnston gave a history of the Chapel and recognized Harper Peterson, who gave his memories of
the founding, followed by stories told by Ann Cathcart, Keith Bradley and Cindy Sellers. The dinner concluded with the
singing of the “Gaelic Blessing.”
In addition to the planning and preparation by the Chapel Board members, as well as Elayne Bennett, service providers
made the Chapel and grounds look splendid and the lunch even more delicious. Special thanks go to Billie McCall, Cheryl
MacDonald, Holt Glenn and Matt Baldiga for their professional services and loving care of the property; to Carrie Moffett
and Diane Mesaris of the Association, Old Baldy Foundation, Public Safety for the chairs and Ben Liddle of Public Works
for their assistance; Wayne Lambert for assistance in moving everything; Jane Baldridge for website management and
Claude Pope at the Maritime Market.

Village Chapel Assists with Hurricane Relief Fundraising
The Village Chapel worked on fundraising and a “hands-on” plan targeted to assist those in the Lumberton area that were
hit hard by the floods of hurricane Matthew. Lumberton and BHI are connected by three of our “generator society” families

(the Berne’s, the Wester’s and the Douglas’), and the devastation was biblical in proportion.
Over $8,000 was raised and several parishoners voluntered multiple days.
