At the center of the Coatesville Cultural Society is a group
of theatre artists who share a love of diversity and a desire for
peaceful resolution of conflict. The founders of “the society” were
concerned about the racial divide in Coatesville and it seemed
important to them to get people to talk to one another. We found
that there was no common language that people could use that
would enable dialogue to promote understanding and no forum
that was free of the tendency to polarize people around beliefs or
political orientation. So we decided to use our theatre as an event
to draw diverse people together to have a meal with them. But
instead of trying to solve any of the world’s problems, we have
opted for merely introducing ourselves to one another and
allowing our impressions to do the rest.
Theatre art is a thing of the moment. There is nothing tangible to
indicate its value. Yet many factors must come together for those
involved to feel the experience was worth the effort. And after
that moment, the work of art is handed to the memory where it
exists only in the form of impressions that were made.
There is nothing else to measure.
