This includes PVCpressure pipe for potable water, reclaimed water and

sewer force main systems as well as PVC non-pressurepipe for storm sewer and sanitary sewer systems. NSFSustainability reviewed and verified the life cycleassessment (on which the EPD is based) and EPDdocuments to ensure that no unsubstantiated claimswere made and that the EPD followed all applicable rules.Click here to view the full EPD for water and sewer piping.Commitment to Product Safety andTransparencyBaseline for Continuous ImprovementNSF International also maintains certification programswhich provide independent confirmation that productsmeet the requirements of American National Standardsdesigned to assure products are appropriate for these enduses. PVCPA members are certified to NSF/ANSI 14 forphysical performance, health effects and qualityrequirements of pipe products and NSF/ANSI 61 for potablewater contact products. Both standards establish strictcriteria for products to be considered safe for use. Thisthird-party verified, ISO 14025 compliant EPD was the nextstep in validating the safety and sustainability of PVC piping products. With the completion of thisEPD, PVCPA members have demonstrated their continued commitment to product safety andtransparency.EPDs are increasingly used across many industries by product manufacturers to providetransparent environmental data to customers. This EPD is based on an industry-wide life cycleassessment (LCA) prepared by Sustainable Solutions Corporation that identifies the full life cycleenvironmental impacts of PVC pipe. PVCPA members can use the LCA and EPD report as abaseline for continuous improvement, identifying opportunities throughout the product life cyclefor further environmental impact reductions. This positions PVC pipe manufacturers as leaders intheir industry, and provides transparent environmental impact data to builders and municipalitiesfor building and construction standards such as the Envision™ Sustainable Infrastructurecertification and other green building and sustainability programs.Smooth Interior Surface Saves Energy

Meeting Sustainability GoalsThe EPD pinpoints areas of greatest environmentalimpact as well as the environmental benefits ofutilizing PVC piping. For example, the use phase ofpressurized potable water pipe, during which pumpsovercome friction to move water through pipe, wasfound to contribute the greatest environmentalimpacts throughout the product’s entire life cycle. TheEPD also identified advantages in this stage such asthe smooth interior surface of PVC pipe that minimizesfriction and therefore energy consumption. PVC pipe isalso corrosion resistant and has a proven durability inexcess of 100 years, requiring less frequentreplacement.Environmental impact categories analyzed includeglobal warming potential, ozone depletion, acidification, eutrophication, smog formation andcumulative energy demand. PVC pipe is designed tominimize environmental impacts due to its corrosionresistance, enabling long-term durability. The PVCPAenvironmental product declaration providestransparent environmental impact data that isessential for builders and municipalities sourcingproducts in accordance with their green building goals.Having the EPD verified by an independent third-partyorganization like NSF International lends credibility andtrust to the EPD report and is an industry best practice. It was an extensive process to develop the life cycleassessment and the resulting EPD documents, but well worth the effort. Buyers of PVC pipingwant to see this data to help meet their sustainability goals and our members were dedicated tomaking this possible. This industry-wide EPD reflects their resolve to use science to drivemanufacturing and product improvements and to be leaders in transparency reporting.Certifying Product Safety Since 1944Used by the U.S. EPANSF International (nsf.org) has been testing and certifying products forsafety, health and the environment since 1944. As an independent publichealth and safety organization, NSF International’s mission is to protecthuman health and the environment through standards development,

auditing, testing and certification for the food, water, build/construction,retail, consumer products, chemical and health science industries. NSFInternational led the development of the American National Standardsfor all materials and products that treat or come in contact with drinking water. In 1990, the U.S.EPA replaced its own drinking water product advisory program with these NSF Internationalstandards.MissionOur mission is to promote use of longer-life, lower-maintenance, corrosion-proof PVC pipe in water andwastewater systems – for real sustainability, strength and long-term asset management.About Us ResourcesMedia ContactMembers BlogsEventsUseful LinksUni-Bell PVC Pipe Association201 E.
