Principal’s Message

2014-15 has been a great year for Sandown Bay Academy; in October, following an Ofsted inspection the academy was
removed from special measures. Ofsted Inspectors concluded that the Academy is improving strongly and that students
and staff had a new-found sense of confidence and pride in their work. They found the Academy to be a safe and happy
environment for students. Our Sixth Form was graded ‘good’ because ‘students make good progress and achieve well
because of the good teaching.’ This was a great achievement by our staff and students, however, we did not relax, our drive
to improve has continued at a fast pace throughout the year as we work towards being a good school. Subsequent visits
have confirmed that the school has continued to improve.

Inside this magazine is just a snapshot of all of the incredible opportunities and achievements of our students this year. I am
very proud to have been their Principal for the past 18 months and wish them every success for the future under the new
Principal’s lead. I have no doubt that Sandown Bay will continue to go from strength to strength.
Thank you for your continued support.

Message from Eric Jackson
the Academy
Captains Message
from the
School Council

During this year the School Council have strived to create
the best learning environment we can, both in and out of
the classroom. This year we have been working on many
projects including creating a tannoy system and producing
student ID cards. The School Council are very much involved
in making decisions at Sandown Bay Academy; our aim is to
ensure that all students have a voice and are proud of our
fantastic school.

Next year we will continue to be very productive. Thank you
to everyone who has supported our schemes this year.

Our 5 years at Sandown Bay Academy have been incredible,
and have provided us with endless opportunities. The
biggest and most significant events have been: Global
Rock, the Baylink Olympics, our Sixth Form End of Year
Event, and that’s just naming a few! These events are so
important as they are predominantly student-led, and have
been great successes. Our Sixth Form Ball was a blast, and
we couldn’t have done it without the help of our Sixth Form
Committee. We have enjoyed every year at Sandown; every
teacher has helped us achieve our best, and we wouldn’t be
where we are today without them. We will miss everyone that
made our high school experience memorable, thank you for
everything!

Houses

The House System promotes positive competition, team building and a sense of community and belonging. Winning is great
but, participation for Red, Green, Blue or Yellow House is the key.
Every week students enjoy competing in Inter House activities. Alongside traditional sporting competitions they also
participate in Inter House bake off, spelling bee, sewing bee and general knowledge.

‘We have been so impressed with the number of students taking part in Inter House activities
each week. Every Wednesday we look forward to some healthy competition between the
four Houses. Students are proud to represent their Houses and we reward them for their
commitment and enthusiasm.’

House Leaders

Due to fundraising by the Houses and by the School Council over the last two years
we have raised over £10,000 for charities including: Save the Children, Cardiac Risk in
the Young, Air Ambulance, Cancer Research, Comic Relief, Macmillan Research, IOW
Independent Lifeboats, Childreach International, Earl Mountbatten Hospice and Teenage
Cancer Trust.

medals, placing first in the ‘One Act Play’ category and first,
second and third in the ‘Duologue’ category. In the Music
Festival, Corey Gibbs won the Boys’ Solo performance for
his age group and the Sixth Form dance students were
placed first in 3 categories; contemporary dance, musical
theatre and freestyle dance.

We have particularly enjoyed seeing our students from Year
10 through to Year 12 working with different primary schools,
performing their devised pieces and hosting workshops with
them.

Global Rock

80 students have been involved in Global Rock this year. The
student-led Global Rock Committee organise everything for
their 5-8 minute performance. They come up with the theme,
choreograph the performance, select and record music
for their soundtrack, and design and make their set and
costumes. Students also do their own fundraising; during one
weekend of bag packing in Morrisons they raised £1,200.
This year’s performance called ‘Thale khlun’ was a moving
and emotional portrayal of the 2004 Tsunami in the Indian
Ocean. Performing at Portsmouth Guildhall for the ‘Showcase’
in March they were awarded 6 Excellence Awards for:
Drama, Performance Skill, Choreography, Video Performance,
Entertainment, Soundtrack.
During the Southern Premier finals they were awarded 8
Excellence Awards for: Entertainment, Visual Enhancement,
Drama, Performance Skills, Choreography, Costuming
Character, Video Performance, Performers Choice Award.

‘Students have really embraced the spirit
of Global Rock this year, they have been
exceptional. They have shown great leadership
skills and it has been lovely to see the younger
students working with the older students.
I am very proud of their incredibly poignant
performance this year.’

French and
Spanish

Exchange Trips

Students have benefited from two cultural exchange trips this
year; a French exchange to Caen and a Spanish exchange
to Alicante, both run by the Modern Foreign Languages
department. In Caen, on SBA’s first French exchange,
students were given tours of some of the most significant
historic sites in northern France, they visited the picturesque
destination of Mont St Michel and took part in lessons at our
partner school Lycée Sainte-Marie.

In Alicante, our GCSE Spanish students also toured the
most historic sites, braving the searing heat to walk up to
the ‘Castillo de Santa Barbara.’ They also visited a famous
marine reserve and in the local school (our partners IES 8 de
Marzo) they attended lessons and worked on a joint project
about Alicante which they will be able to use for their next
GCSE Controlled Assessment.
The Spanish and French students were welcomed to the
island on their leg of the exchange, they enjoyed meeting
their host families, coming into the Academy for lessons and
seeing the beautiful sights of the Isle of Wight. The positive
impact of these foreign exchange projects is immeasurable,
not only for the students who take part but also the knock on
effect for our students back in school who get to meet the
students from France and Spain. It broadens their horizons
and boosts their language ability.

Work Experience and Outreach
Opportunities

We strive to get as many students as possible to take part in work experience and to make the most of the many outreach
opportunities available to them. We want our students to be aspirational; we want them to see a variety of jobs and careers,
we regularly take them on trips to universities to set their sights high for the future.

Over the course of this year Sandown Bay Academy students have completed work experience at a huge variety of industries
and businesses including:
Amazon World, Wiltons Garage, Bartlett’s Services, Robin Hill, Red Funnel, The Garlic Farm, Wyatt and Jack, Island Roads,
Chamber of Commerce, Police, Platform One, Stone Farm Riding School, local primary schools, Wightwaters, HTP, Sandown
and Shanklin Golf Club, TJ’s gym plus many more. We are extremely grateful to all of the businesses for their support in
allowing students to experience a taste of the working world. If you feel you could offer something in your workplace, please
get in contact with us via [email protected].

There have been numerous outreach opportunities for students throughout the year through our partnerships with universities
and employers, including:

• Trips to Portsmouth University, Chichester University and Southampton University.
• Sixth Form students have been working on a project with GKN to design wingtips for aircrafts.
• Year 8 and 9 students have been working with Mentors from Red Funnel to design and build a working Hovercraft.
• Students have been working on a GO4SET project with Southampton University to research and

design ‘My Island School.’
• A group of students visited Warsash Maritime Academy to try their hands at sailing a container ship

and superyacht using the academy’s simulator.
• Earlier this year we held a careers fair for over 250 Year 9 students.
• 0ver 300 students watched the BAE roadshow, a fun, live interactive presentation aimed at inspiring students.

“I had the chance to do a week’s work
experience at Newchurch Primary School
in October, which was a great opportunity.
I got the chance to act as a teaching
assistant for a week, I really enjoyed it
and it made me realise I do want to be a
teacher in the future.”

Trips - something
for everyone!

SBA students have had great opportunities to travel this
year; there have been a range of exciting trips including an
activity week in Trewern, a Geography trip to Cornwall, an
activity week on the Isle of Arran, exchange visits to Spain
and France as well as numerous day trips to London.
Following the success of the ski trip last year we were
able to put on an additional trip, in total over 90 students
experienced an exhilarating week both on and off the slopes.

Sporting Stars!

It has been another successful sporting year for Sandown Bay Academy students. We continue to be ‘the school to beat’ in
many competitions, where we dominate both on the island and in Hampshire. Students have made the most of our superb
facilities and the extensive range of sports clubs on offer; the training they put in and the top class coaching they receive
has really paid off this year.
We have enjoyed thrilling performances by hundreds of our students in a whole range of sports, including rowing, cricket,
dressage, athletics, basketball, climbing, football and rugby. We have won countless medals, Isle of Wight tournaments
and reached the finals of regional and national competitions. Our girls’ teams have been extremely successful this year
particularly in cricket where the U15 team were crowned island champions for the third year in a row.

Sports Leadership

Last year Sandown Bay Academy was awarded Leadership
Academy status for our contribution to leadership
development and volunteer deployment in the community.
We are very proud of our sports leaders and the hard
work and time they put in to running sports events. We
currently have 58 students completing a sports leadership
qualification. As part of their qualification, during this year
students have organised and run a huge range of events
for students in local primary schools including, The Baylink
Olympics, a number of sports days, transition days as well
as tennis, golf and netball tournaments.

High Performance
Academy

Students at Sandown Bay Academy who are particularly
gifted and talented at PE or sport are identified and
selected to be part of our ‘High Performance Academy.’
Our programme plays an instrumental role in recognising,
guiding and supporting students. Once every term students
take part in workshops. This year the 80 students in the High
Performance Academy have received specialist workshops
from athlete James Forman, GB Beach Volleyball player
Chris Gregory, Phil Milner, McTimoney Chiropractor and
Tom Colwill from Crossfit Valentis. They also spent a day at
Southampton Diving Centre being taught to dive by Olympic
silver medallist Pete Waterfield.

Torch Transition Programme

Ensuring Year 6 students are confident and prepared for Secondary School
Sandown Bay Academy’s Torch Transition Programme ensures that students visit the academy on many occasions during
Year 6 so that they are as confident and prepared as possible when they start in Year 7. The process started in the Autumn
Term when students came up for workshops in Music, Maths, Computing and Languages. In March each Year 6 student was
given a pen pal buddy in Year 7; their buddy wrote to them and gave them a tour of the academy on their Torch transition
day visit in June.
Throughout the summer term there were lots of additional chances for them to visit and get tasters of the wealth of opportunities
that are on offer at Sandown Bay Academy. On top of their two induction days in July, they took part in a number of specialist
days such as Performing Arts ‘Disney’ workshops, a Sports Talent Development Camp where they were put through their
paces in a range of sports workshops and games. Students also came up for Art workshops where they learnt a range
of new techniques. Year 6 students also completed transition projects in English, Maths, Science or Geography, with the
support of Sandown Bay Academy teachers. The standard of work was outstanding and the winners were very proud to
receive their certificates in a celebration assembly.
‘Meeting the Year 6 students numerous times throughout the year, through activities and
events, has enabled us to really get to know the year group. Their confidence and enthusiasm
to be a member of Sandown Bay Academy has grown throughout the year.’

Jane Chase, Head of Year 7

Curriculum Focus
Days

Sometimes in school we need longer ‘chunks’ of time to teach
learners specific skills or to focus on particular areas of their
learning. During each year, on carefully selected days, we
‘re-shape’ the regular timetable and re-direct all students
and staff into year-based activities. These are known as
Curriculum Focus Days.

The principle aim of Curriculum Focus Days is to allow the
opportunity for rich, memorable learning experiences and
activities within the flexibility of a day. Many would simply
not fit into a regular one hour lesson. It also allows us to
be creative in the delivery of key messages, activities and
themes. A huge range of activities, guest speakers, trips
and targeted study sessions have taken place during the
Curriculum Focus Days this year:

• ‘Head On’ road safety presentation
• Careers Fair
• ‘Positively Mad’ revision and study workshops
• Trip to the Science Museum, London
• Targeted Year 11 intervention
• Trip to Kingswood activity centre
• Healthy body, healthy mind day
• Survival cookery
• World Culture Day
• Camp Craft
• Recycled Christmas decorations
• Karate
• Archery
• Sports Leaders
• Head-hunters
• Crime Scene Investigation
• Engineering
• Wonderstruck workshops
• UCAS workshops
• Newspaper production
• Politics Day
• Options Roadshow
• University Talks
• Team building activities
• Orienteering
• First-aid skills
• Journalism workshops

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

Parkour, weight training, Dungeons and Dragons, trampolining, Global Rock, climbing, performance ensemble, German,
street cricket, textiles, performance choir, water sports, art…. just some of the extensive extra-curricular clubs that students
have been taking part in this year.
On Wednesday afternoons all sixth form students take part in enrichment activities to broaden their experience and develop
them as well rounded individuals. This year’s activities have included: Maths Café, Zumba, pre-driver training, survival
cookery, golf, climbing, first aid, film club and Duke of Edinburgh.

Duke of Edinburgh

Duke of Edinburgh is a strong feature at Sandown Bay Academy; we encourage students to join up because of the valuable
skills they will gain for work and life and to help open doors for them in the future. The Award gives students the opportunity
to build their confidence, dedication and commitment. Whilst working towards their Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards students
this year have faced torrential wind, rain and storms during their expeditions in Dartmoor, The New Forest and on the island.
Three ex-Sandown Bay Academy students were rewarded for all their hard work and commitment when they received their
Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards at St James Palace this year.
