FROM THE FOUNDER’S DESK

Wow! And what a buzz it was! Our Launch was a spectacular day - a day
of celebration, a day of acknowledgment, a day to reflect back and look

forward. What an honour and a privilege it was to see our Inaugural Achievers
graduate, and to yet again hear their stories which touched the hearts of
many. We were graced with presence of distinguished guests Mayor Sheryl
Mai, The Hon. Shane Jones and The Hon. Shane Reti, all of whom spoke
warmly of Achieve 2B. A truly heartfelt “Thank You” to those of you who
attended and contributed to making the occasion the huge success it was.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the new-look magazine. We hope you
enjoy our makeover to a quarterly magazine that will be filled with plenty of

informative content to let you know what is happening. I would like to thank
Emma Bainbridge who has been our Newsletter Coordinator and now steps
down to take on her new role as Programme Coordinator.

It is with much pleasure that I announce that we are now starting a branch
of Achieve 2B in Wellington. Achieve 2B is starting to spread its wings. We
welcome Chato Alip who is the volunteer Regional Coordinator for Wellington.
She has the challenge of navigating the waters as first Regional Coordinator.
Achieve 2B Wellington will recruit students in 2019, for a 2020 exhange. We
look forward to hearing from Chato and the developments in Wellington.

We have begun to develop our first Community Teams based on the North
Shore and in Wellington. The Community Teams consist of confident public
speakers who will go out and spread the word to service groups. The
purpose of the Community Teams is to recruit host families for Achieve 2B,
and recruitment has already begun for the 2018-19 programme. Myself and
our Student Advisor, Sam, have been to schools in Whangarei, North Shore,
and South Auckland. This development is encouraging, and we look forward
to introducing our great line-up of students in the August edition.

Let’s build on our successes so that the
global Mexican wave ripples, enabling
young people with disabilities to
continue to define themselves.

Best Wishes,
Julia Hartshorne - Founder of Achieve 2B

24th MARCH, 2018:

ACHIEVE 2B OFFICIAL LAUNCH

Saturday, 24th March 2018 saw the official launch of Achieve 2B, with
a grand ceremony at Whangarei’s Barge Park events centre. The event was
attended by supporters, partners, friends, and family of the Achieve 2B team, as
well as distinguished guests, and was brilliantly MC’d by More FM’s Toast.

Guests began arriving from 11am, greeted by the view of the surrounding Barge

Park, before making their way into the venue, which had been decorated for the
occassion in the Achieve 2B colours of blue & green. Once everyone was seated,
a powhiri welcomed in distinguished guests, after which the celebration was
ready to get underway in earnest.

Kicking off the launch was the unveiling of the new Achieve 2B logo by resident
graphic designer Kari Roberts - to find out more about how the new logo came to

be, see p8. This was followed by speeches from the Kaumatua Matua Warahi and
his wife Whaea Linda Paki, Achieve 2B Chair Jon Harvey, and the Hon. Shane
Jones and Hon. Shane Reti. Hearing the stories of how each speaker came to be
involved in Achieve 2B was a true testament to the hard work and dedication that
goes on behind the scenes, and of the ongoing support that makes Achieve 2B’s
mission possible.

Following the speeches, it was time for the main event - graduation of our
amazing inaugural students Dennon, Tash, and Taylor, which was presided over
by Her Worship the Mayor Sheryl Mai. All three students gave speeches, which

spoke of their Achieve 2B journey and the confidence and experience they have
gained from it. Then, after lunch it was time for the launch-within-a-launch, of our
founder Julia’s book “You Will Achieve”. To find out more about the book or to
order a copy, please visit:
www.achieve2b.org.nz/you-will-achieve-by-julia-vaatuitui-hartshorne/

Rounding off the afternoon were special acknowledgements of Achieve 2B’s

many wonderful supporters, and a final Founder’s Speech from Julia. Throughout
the day, guests were also treated to a dance and singing performaces courtesy
of StarJam, and food and drinks provided by Afare catering.

We would like to heartily thank all who attended the launch and made it
such a fantastic and memorable day for all.

CREATING A NEW LOGO:

How the new Achieve 2B logo came about

TheYear: 2017. The Brief: for Kari, Achieve2B’s web & graphics volunteer,
to design a new logo that uniquely expressed Achieve2B’s inspiring vision
and purpose.

Throughout the process, Julia & Kari went through heaps of various ideas
and options, but none of them were quite right. They ended up being too

complicated and tried to merge too many ideas together.

Following a workshop with some of the students and volunteers in June,
they gained valuable insight about the significance of the koru symbol of the
current logo (now our old logo), and to keep its colours blue and green.

Kari went back to the drawing board and created a fresh set of 4 new
options. Between the months of September of October these were voted on
by the students, board members and volunteer team, and great feedback

was given. After some final tweaks, we all agreed we had arrived at the right
solution - something that expressed new beginnings, personal growth and
soaring above limitations, in a clean and simple way.

It came down to the invaluable input and assistance of the graduating

students, volunteer team and Board of Trustees that made the difference in
creating the right logo.

Achieve 2B ended the year of 2017 having accomplished so much, and
completing our new logo counted as one success amongst many. We
couldn’t have done it without our Achievers Dennon, Taylor & Tash, thank
you. We’re also grateful to our wonderful volunteer team and capable Board
of Trustees.

THE WELLINGTON CONNECTION:

INTRODUCING CHATO ALIP-NEUDECK, OUR NEW

REGIONAL COORDINATOR IN WELLINGTON

Hello, my name is Chato Alip-Neudeck. I recently came across a listing
for the opportunity to volunteer and become the Regional Coordinator in
Wellington for Achieve 2B, and the more I researched, the more I became
passionate about the movement. I just knew this was something I had to be
involved in.

I have a BSc in Nursing - most of my experience is in Neonatal Intensive
Care, working with the birth of babies, which is wonderful yet very complex

process. Helping to make a positive difference in people’s lives is my
ultimate passion. Nursing has given me the ability to experience life in
different parts of the world, and I have practiced my craft in over seven
countries.

I’ve immersed myself in those wonderful cultures,
made many friends along the way, and have learnt so
many things. Because of this, I truly understand how

valuable travelling is to one’s life. I encountered a lot of
up and downs that have transformed me into a stronger
individual with a better perspective of life, and I wouldn’t

be the person who I am today without these experiences.
Travelling is a major reason why I hope people will be
involved in the exchange program. I hope that like me,
they will take away many wonderful experiences and
strive to make a difference.

As the Regional Coordinator in Wellington, my goal is
to help Achieve 2B build a sustainable branch within

the Wellington Region. This would be achieved
by team development and having a small team to
implement the programme, by networking, and by
building relationships with local stakeholders
such as schools, community, and disability

providers. This is so that ultimately the
programme can be delivered to the
highest standards by which it has
been designed.
