Beware – Here comes email phishing
Pavan Kavad
The modern world as we know it revolves around technology. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that without it our
lives would undergo a drastic change. Technology has changed the way we communicate with each other; our
modes of communication have never been easier, accessible, adaptable and diverse. In modern times, a part of
our “everyday meditation” revolves around emails, chatbots, whatsapp and the list goes on…While all modes of
communication are heavily secured with malwares, firewalls and the likes of it; hackers still find some loophole
and dig their way into email accounts usually with the intention of leeching finances, thereby causing a financial
loss. They become rich at the expense of their victims financial health. The popular term for this is “phishing
attack” on emails. In fact, email is the most common method of a phishing assault.
The Modus:
Hackers or fraudsters register a fake domain that looks like a real one and send out thousands of requests for
the same subject. The fake domain frequently uses character substitution, such as ‘rn’ instead of ‘m’ by placing
‘r’ and ‘n’ close to each other. It’s also possible to send an email from a domain registrar. The user name will
reflect “Paypal” but the email ID when clicked will expand the email ID which might be entered as paypal@
domainregistrar.com. It’s imperative to be aware of these things especially when you’re dealing in large sums
of money as once the money gets credited to the fraudsters account, it’s as good as lost. In case you are lucky
enough, you can request the bank to apply for a freeze on the fraudsters account and can designate the bank
account as “fraudulent”. These days, banks globally have a cyber-fraud and theft department or as the case may
be. Once you report to the bank, they can help you to do the needful.
Recently, we came across a case where a foreign education candidate was attacked with one such scam.
She paid the fees and submitted all the documents but turns out that the university on the other end never
received it. While investigating the emails and the paperwork, we found that the email account was hacked and
the money was transferred to a fraudsters bank account. Luckily we stepped in time and after a lot of effort,
exchange of communications with the remitting banker and beneficiary banker, the account was frozen and the
customer could get around 55% of her money back. She sure seems to be lucky! Usually the money could have
been withdrawn in full immediately and there is only 1% chance that the money remains in the account.
Here are a few red flags that you can look out for:
• The email address of a message asking you to click a link or download an attachment is a good place to start
looking for a phishing email.
• The email is from a public domain. The domain name (the part after the ‘@’ symbol) should match the
apparent sender.
• Sometimes the email is poorly written. Scam emails generally include poor spelling and punctuation.
• If the message insists on a certain urgency, something might be sketchy. We get a critical email and decide to
deal with it later. That’s why so many frauds demand action now or it’ll be too late.
Be vigilant and be safe!

Business Excellency Program at IIM-A
Suyash Surana
One bright afternoon, when I received the mailer from JITO’s Center of Excellence (CFE) announcing an
opportunity to upskill myself at one of the prestigious universities I could not resist. I applied for the program
and there has been no looking back! You will have to trust me when I write this that the Center of Excellence
made the entire program feel so seamless that I did not have an iota of doubt if I should reconsider joining
the program.
The Business Excellence programs conducted by the Indian Institute of Management- Ahmadabad, are
short duration, cohort-based executive programs. These are designed for entrepreneurs who are looking at
creating a new edge in their existing ventures. The beauty of this program lies in the diverse group of people
that attend it and the case-study pedagogy of teaching. Being ‘the’ front runner in management education
in India- IIMA, truly stands by its tagline of “Vidya viniyogad vikasa”, meaning “development through the
application of knowledge”.
The faculties were impressive in their approach to the whole concept of ‘Strategy and Operations’. The idea of
putting such complicated concepts, into understandable compact modules that had actionable insights was
remarkable. The program was not only intellectually stimulating but also gave us ample opportunity to connect
with fellow JITO Members, from various chapters and backgrounds. Right from the “Design thinking workshop”
to “Understanding Family Businesses” all the programs were fruitful in improving our existing perceptions or
helping us develop a new direction to carve our paths.
It was indeed an amazing experience and both Bharat and I look forward to being a part of such programs in the
near future. Of course, we would recommend other members to join us too.
P.S - Be prepared to burn the midnight oil, quite literally.
