Thank you PSC for bringing us together - 19 1/2 years strong!
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS MADE PSC A HOME FOR 50 YEARS!
From the start PSC was and is the center of my Jewish life: I ran around
at 4 yrs during the oneg, learned Hebrew from Mrs. Gruschka and my
Bat Mitzvah portion from Rabbi Kraus, learned about volunteering
and leadership watching my parents and their friends during committee
meetings, enjoyed the facilities as a teen in Chai BBG, married Neal
under the PSC chupah, and continue to cherish my friends, new and old,
whenever I walk through the doors today.
It is a great joy and privilege to see PSC thriving as brightly as it is
during its Jubilee. Thank you for always being our home.
With gratitude-

PSC MEMORIES
LINDA AND LOU HARRIS
Linda & I were NOT around at the beginning; we joined in the summer of 1974 after meeting with a Mr. Gruschka
(of blessed memory) who, we soon learned, was pretty much chief cook and bottle washer (e.g., president,
membership chair, education director). Jon immediately put me on the Board. At that time, we were about 45
families meeting at the old Belmont JCC. We didn’t have a Rabbi until we engaged Rabbi Jay Krause a year later.
One of the concerns of our members when we joined was building a synagogue. Up until then, our members paid
a Building Fund of the whopping sum of $25. Some time in the mid-70’s the congregation voted in a $500 building
fund. This started the ball rolling on the acquisition of the parcel of land at the corner of Edgewater and Boothbay
in Foster City.
We had a land dedication ceremony in the summer of 1977, still without a home. At the conclusion, John Igoe of
St Luke’s Catholic Church offered us the use their facilities. John Igoe said that we were a faith organization as were
they, and they believed they had an obligation to do whatever they could to assist. They didn’t even want to charge
us. They did agree, however, to let us contribute to the cost of utilities. It was a wonderful relationship that lasted a
little over a year, right up to the time we moved into our building in December 1978.
Several years later, we were approached by the Karaite community seeking a place to worship. Some on the Board
were reluctant. I laid out the history and we welcomed them into our facilities. A similar situation arose with Bridge
Four Square Church, who were with us for 3 years.
Bottom line? This taught me that we at PSC are only a small cog in a big wheel, and that we have a
better chance of enduring if we reach out to others who are in need.
BARBARA AND MEL BRODIE
We have many memories of our years at PSC. We formed lifetime friendships. We built something that
will last and are thrilled that our daughter, tiny when we joined, is now an active member in her own
right. Some things we remember:
• Learning that the proper way to hold services was the way it was done at home
• Meeting in a store front on 25th Ave in San Mateo
• Holding Religious School in members’ homes
• Renting space in an unfinished office building in Foster City for the High Holy Days
• Mimeographing our early bulletins – does anyone know what a stencil is?
• Making latkes together
• Building the first building where we held our children’s b’nai mitzvah
We literally grew up in Peninsula Sinai, developing a community, and carrying on the traditions of our
parents. We are thrilled that the synagogue is moving on and providing a place for future generations
to do the same.
PSC MEMORIES
JOYCE GRUSCHKA
The reason we started PSC was to have a place of worship with family, and those reasons exist 50
years later. We went from a vacant building in San Mateo to a store front on 25th Avenue to the
Belmont JCC, to using space at St. Lukes, to our own building on Boothbay. And with each move,
we added more members who became part of the family. We expanded our programs and became
a prominent addition to the Jewish Community which we still are today.
Shortly after we moved into our building and settled our Torahs in our ark, we had a very discouraging
event happen. One night, a group of teenagers painted a swastika on the side of our building. It was
shocking and frightening. The next day, our Rabbi, Jay Krause, Father Bob and the minister of the
Episcopalian Church down the street rolled up their sleeves and scrubbed that ugly image off our
building. We knew then that we were truly welcomed in the Foster City community.
As new members joined, Jon not only made them feel welcome, he involved them in activities and
committees so that they became part of the family. Jon helped make PSC part of the Bay Area Jewish
community. We had Hannukah parties where the men made latkes on Sunday morning and Seders.
We made it part of our service that women could participate fully in all aspects of the services which
is when I started chanting the Haftorah on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, something I am still doing
today. It truly was the feeling of family, which I am still proud to be part of.
It’s difficult to condense 50 years into a few words, but what started PSC was a need to be part of a
family and that need still is part of our growing membership.
STEVE & ANDY PEARLMAN
Who would have imagined in the late 60’s we would be celebrating a 50 year gala? We originally met
with a few friends to decide which synagogue to attend. We remember talking with Manny & Sharon
Hirschel and Murray & Lois Bloom about the area. Most of the services were conducted by David
Reina. We had a number of visiting rabbis who came on Friday evenings only. I remember Saul &
Barbare Zenk originating the idea of moving to Foster City. During the construction, we were
welcomed at St Luke’s church and Hebrew and Sunday school classes were held in Father Bob’s home.
We were a bit concerned that the building would not be completed before our son’s Bar Mitzvah;
however, the builder, Hank Ecker’s son, also had a Bar Mitzvah planned, so the building was
completed in time. By this time, our membership was increasing, and we hired a full time rabbi.
Jay Krause. Mel & Jayne Bloom brought us a rescued Torah from Europe and we were now a Shul.
It has been a pleasure and very rewarding to see the growth from a few dedicated families to
where we are today.
