IN THIS ISSUE ROAD TRIP TO TYTOONA

Page 2 Road trip – Resident Linda Morrow and her husband George Pedlow were our
Birthdays gracious hosts as we made a visit to Linda’s “farm,” a former village in Sinking
Rainfall Valley. The Village bus drove first to Tytoona Cave, going down the steps to a
Poetry Corner spectacular sinkhole where water flows into a cave. The water travels about a mile
Save the Date underground in the limestone and then emerges in a spring and flows under a
natural stone bridge (arch) at Arch Spring Farm. We were able to see the Arch on
Page 3 the way to the farm. Linda and George explained the property, with time to walk
Field Day around the grounds as well as to tour the two limestone houses she uses for a B&B.

REMINDER A current revision of the Resident Directory will be coming soon. Please give any additions or changes in

email or phone number since February 2017 to the front desk for inclusion in the new directory. Thank you!
We currently only have one guest suite, E010. E010 is a 2 bedroom, however there is only one bed and a pull out couch but there
is an option to rent an air mattress. If you wish to reserve it you must go to the front desk to fill out and sign the form (Guest
Suite Reservation) for the days you wish to reserve it and how many guests. You must come to the desk to fill out the form and
sign it. Phone calls will no longer be accepted. You cannot reserve rooms prior to 60 days before you need it. The front desk
staff has a graph to tell you the earliest day the apartment can be reserved. No forms will be accepted prior to that date. This is
outlined in your Resident Handbook. Thank you for your understanding.

tastic outdoor activities in place of our morning exercise classes! Events included Corn hole, Bocce Ball, Croquet, Lasso
Golf, and Frisbee! Fresh air, friendly competition, and some fun physical movement was had by all!

SUNFLOWERS

Below is a poem Betsy wrote about this lovely field of
sunflowers on Rt. 45 near Mifflinburg

Sunflowers

How magical is the power
Of viewing acres of full blown sunflowers!
But, perhaps, more special, indeed,
Is the sight of those birds who will devour the seed!
Betsy and her daughter encountered this lovely field of
sunflowers while driving to have lunch at Rusty Rail
Brewing Company. They raved about the beautiful drive and
food at RR. We will be planning a fall foliage drive in that
area and plan to stop at RR for lunch. Watch your calendar!

TWELVE METER (EC-12)

Racing is local, regional and national. Most of the radio-controlled boats are handmade by their skippers after
purchasing a pre-molded hull. Some boats are purchased from previous owners. They all rely solely on wind power
for their movement. The skipper controls the rudder and the sails. No motors, they’re sailboats. Nancy Wolf and Dick
Kustin braved the risk of rain to observe the rc boats on Lake Perez. Their host was Fred Maurer.

PHIL MADE THE CDT!

Thank goodness that Phil
Keeney likes chocolate.
“If somebody really
liked chocolate I would
recommend them trying
Keeney Beany because
it’s kind of over-the-
top chocolate,” James
Brown, assistant creamery
manager, said.
Earlier this month, Sports
Illustrated gave the flavor a pretty solid recommendation, too, putting it at the No. 19 spot on its list of America’s 25 best
college town meals. Writer Andy Staples praised the complexity that the vanilla bean brings to what would otherwise be
a straightforward bowl of chocolate ice cream.
Keeney’s name became attached shortly after he retired in 1985, but the flavor itself goes back to his early days as a
professor with Penn State’s food science program. “The basic mix was developed back when I first got here. We kind of
upgraded the product, added more milk,” Keeney said.
Then there’s the Philip G. Keeney Food Science Department Head Excellence Fund, which bolstered by contributions
from donors and Keeney Beany sales fosters new and initiatives within the program.
“I’ve been fortunate as much as anything,” Keeney said.

BOOK BENCH TOUR

The Centre Foundation, through the Centre Inspires grant called upon the residents of Centre County to come

describe a county that includes a world class university, high tech businesses, entrepreneurs, mom and pop businesses,
and the family farm, rural, suburban, and urban communities, children, youth, adults and elders? Through The Book
Benches of Centre County!
